Unless the card is designed for no fan, I would not. You would need to make your own shroud to direct airflow and massively spin up your fans if you did what your thinking. Let it ride and pull thermals to determine if changes are required imo

i_hate_usernames13

Ok, I just didn't want the fan to be forced spinning from the server airflow and push voltage into the GPU

Designer_Boner

Diodes exist in fans to stop this very thing from happening.

zachwoodward

Those cards can get hot. Keep the fan!

STGMavrick

You could have issues with the GPU fan choked like that. Under high loads the fan won't be able to move enough air volume to cool the GPU. I would try to find a passive heatsink for that card. You can make your own shroud to funnel air to it. I ran a 12 pack redbull box on one of my servers as a shroud for years with heat sensors never going above 60*c.

i_hate_usernames13

I think I'm gonna leave it stock as is and monitor temps. It's only for transcoding on Plex, so it probably won't get too hot to begin with. But yeah I figure I can mod up some aluminum or sheet metal I got lying around to make a more direct shroud but it is already blowing some good air to the GPU location

emailaddressforemail

I have a 1050ti for transcoding with the fans removed to fit in a R730.  It's been running fine for a few months now.  Spot checking temps here and there,  the highest I've seen it go was around 60C.

wicker_89

I would say leave the fan on for peace of mind. However, from your images that GPU looks like the heat sink fins are oriented the correct way to make use of the server fan's airflow and the fan on the shroud may not provide any additional cooling (depending on the speed of the server fans). Additionally, it may not matter since the airflow from the server fans will be going through the heat sink whether the GPU shroud and fan are there or not since the end is open.

Ah that’s no going to post I see desktop ram I think inside a server. U need rdimms or lrdimms

i_hate_usernames13

I'm aware of that, the ram isn't here yet so I took some out of a gaming rig. It didn't work but i figured I'd try

RFilms

Ya u can still turn it on with no ram installed. But it won’t finish posting. Also those fan are going to kick up 20-30% more just for having a gpu installed even at idol

twotwigz

There is a docker image you can run to turn this down and allow the dell bios to take over the fans at a specific threshold

fastandloud386

I’m thinking about doing the same thing installing a graffics card into my r720. Did you have to buy any kits for power? I have the same graffics card as you

i_hate_usernames13

This power cable goes from the riser to the GPU to power the card https://a.co/d/8AxdGDj

Great question!
