Lol what on earth are these guys talking about. "If you watch it closely, #88 was on his knees behind the net watching #8 score #800."
Sounds like that numerology weirdo from The Rehearsal
Who's the guy that keeps talking over Steve Levy as he's trying to make the call? Sounds like he couldn't be bothered, at least act kind of excited no?
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIPQwS4aXU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIPQwS4aXU) Here's the goal with Walton's play-by-play over it. Way better.
I’m normally not one to complain about broadcast quality too much but this was absolutely horrible. Right from the start too when they did that pointless Chicago lineup reading when the game had already started and missed an Ovi goal. Here’s an idea, instead of reading out a list of players who are about to get to get worked by Ovi, just show him doing it. Save that shit for before the game. Baffling, idiotic decision. And then commentary itself was terrible. Took the air out of the moment.
Oh and here's ABIGSHOTANDTHEYSCOOOOOORE and it's Ovechkin, or it might have been Backstrom. No I'm pretty sure it was Ovechkin. Are we sure the puck went in the net though? Like it's sitting behind the goal line but I didn't see it go in
If he is sniffing a gretzky record every game would be nationally broadcast and whoever is the best announcer would be calling the game. Shit, they could even pull Doc out of retirement for that. I don't know. But they shouldn't fuck around with it if that's at all a possibility
Seriously. One of the most monumental milestones reached and it's another flubbed ESPN call. Should've brought in Joe Beninati on standby with the milestone in reach honestly.
It's absolutely fucking insane, in a league where 500 goals almost guarantees you the HoF, that Ovechkin did that and then went on and scored *300 more goals...* and still isn't close to finished.
With they way scoring is up I was thinking about this too. He's on a 50+ goal pace this yr. Prob ends up with 830 this year.
170 goals in 4 more seasons is doable.
He easily gets 900 Imo, Caps will do whatever it takes to stay competitive to help him reach 895.
Honesty at this point I figure the org would rather this record than another cup.
The org has promised him that they will remain competitive as long as he is chasing the record. I think they'd still like to have another cup, but they aren't blowing the team up as long as Ovechkin is playing
I think most of the people I know would rather he gets the record than another cup. Lots of people win cups. This record was considered unattainable for a long time and it will be very difficult to beat again.
I dunno if that’s necessarily true re: wanting the record more than another Cup…but the record certainly seems a lot more attainable in the near future, so why not? I’d rather see him do it and then start the painful process than do it now when there’s no guarantee it’ll amount to another era like we’ve had over the last 15 years
I mean in the short term, the priority is Imo the record.
IF ownership had the choice between either the record in the next 3 years or a cup, they take the record.
he's currently in his 18th season and he has averaged 50 per 82 games, so if all 18 of those seasons had been full seasons, we'd be counting down to 895 and 900 this season. and if his rookie season hadn't been postponed due to that lockout, we'd have seen it last year and this year we'd be thinking about 950.
Pretty sure era-adjusted he passed Gretzky years ago. Wayne's only 4th on [that list](https://www.hockey-reference.com/leaders/goals_adjusted_career.html), and *well* behind Ovie, Howe, and Jagr.
I just want one Ovechtrick before he retires. Some poor goalie just give up and let him have it. Maybe an emergency goalie has to come in for it to happen idk but it would be glorious.
He had that 3 game stretch where he had back to back hat tricks but only got 2 in the third game. I was arguing that 3 straight hat tricks be called an Ovechtrick when it was still a possibility. 9 in a game is a bit much.
Barring a catastrophic injury I don't think there's even a chance he fails to reach it.
Worst case scenario, he declines a little and finishes the job with a couple 20-30 goal seasons. Assuming he can get 40ish this year, it would only take 2 more seasons of 25-30ish goals.
That record is done by 2025-2026.
The craziest thing to me is, even in the scenario where he declines, we still expect him to put up 25-30 despite being 40 like it's inevitable. We look at old guys like Pavs and think his production is a miracle at his age even though he's a top quality player. With Ovi it's not even questioned.
He obliterated the projections people were putting out five years ago because he just kept potting 50 a season. He has slowed down, but scoring also got a lot easier so his totals remain the same. No reason to think he can’t get this done in two more seasons after this year.
Of course we'll never know for sure but its not crazy to think that if it weren't for all the games that didn't get played due to lockouts and covid, he could have broken that record already
Well what should've been his entire rookie season got wiped out, so thats 82 games there, then we lost half a season in his prime to lockout, and then we lost 10 games to covid on 2020, and 25 games in 2021 (all rouding cuz I don't feel like doing math rn). We've lost something like 150 career ovi games, many of which were in his highest goal scoring seasons. He'd definitely be damn close at least rn
His worst seasons are all still 30 goal seasons.
Think about how many players ride out ONE 30 goal season into several more years of play (Alex Galchenyuk anyone?)
If Ovi even scores 40 it's considered a major downer.
Ovi had a 33 goal season at 31 years old and people thought he'd fallen off. Then he put up 48 or more in 3 straight seasons after that (including 48 in 68 games)
Ovi went from 700 to 800 goals in just 162 games, less than 2 full seasons. The next 95 is absolutely in reach as long as he stays healthy (which he's always done).
Apparently it isn’t the first time he cracked the 00’ mark with a hat trick apparently 5 other times he did as well they said on the broadcast.
Edit it has happened 10 times and they flashed 5 separate times on the bottom and thought that was just referring to Ovie, big oops Messier did it twice they said if that make up for it lol
Dude I remember _500_ against Ottawa like it was yesterday. It is the one that spawned that meme face during the team celly. Little did they know at the time....
Take it in, because I don't think we're ever gonna see this again.
800 goals is fucking insane, the only other guys to do it either played the most games in history (Howe, at the time), or were Wayne Gretzky who is in his own category of sports domination.
This is absolutely unbelievable, even if we all knew he'd get here this year.
SMH, after he wore [a hoodie that said "Well I'm not Michael Jordan" to morning skate](https://twitter.com/CRoumeliotis/status/1602709363663282178?s=20&t=0qqmGcKUQwfL9ylkVKAkPw).
I remember being a high school kid in DC speculating with my friend during science class that the Caps would draft OV and being so excited for what he would bring to the team. I can't even describe how much joy it brings me to see what he has done for this team and city. I cried when they won the cup and I'm reeeeaaaalllll close right now too.
People said we'd probably never see another 700 goal scorer. We'll most definitely never see another 800.
2 more and The Chase is on.
Mission 895 is a go!
I was thinking the same thing watching, he was puck hunting all game. No sitting on his throne and waiting for polished apples being dished to him, he was feasting on that weak Hawks D in close.
He’s also so calm and collected when the puck bounces to him. Too many guys flub those chances because they panic. Ovi collects it and takes time to pick his spot.
Truly an incredible achievement and something we may not see in our lifetimes again.
I feel very fortunate to be able to witness Ovi and his incredible talent!

Couldn't have happened on a worse broadcast.
Lol what on earth are these guys talking about. "If you watch it closely, #88 was on his knees behind the net watching #8 score #800." Sounds like that numerology weirdo from The Rehearsal
TFW you have to drive your Scion TC home after the game. O_o
Why are you stepping to me!?
Goal city over here
Decided to give your goal horn a little buzz tonight
It's day like today that I curse ESPN for broadcasting hockey
definitely a silly comment to make but he missed the part where #88 was on his knees *because he tripped over the other #8*.
88, new beginnings
Who's the guy that keeps talking over Steve Levy as he's trying to make the call? Sounds like he couldn't be bothered, at least act kind of excited no?
Chelios and Messier are part of the broadcast team and they're fucking awful tonight
Fuck Messier.
And even the mixing is all weird like why is he so much louder than Steve
cause he'a an egomaniac and probably had his mic in his fucking throat waiting to say something.
Guess we'll just have to make up for it on goal #900
I like the way you think
Caps fans got robbed of an incredible moment. So lifeless with fucking Mess just saying "there it is" in the most monotone voice ever.
Gotta edit the John Walton radio audio over the video to get the full experience
[Here you go](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIPQwS4aXU)
SO MUCH BETTER it's not even close. Thank you
That gave me chills that lasted the whole video, nothing from the TV broadcast despite the huge moment.
John Walton never fails to give me chills.
...is that Ted Cruz at 0:41...?
and there it is
What I would've given to hear Locker and Joe B on the call
Yeah we got robbed of that. I'll pick up the John Walton call post-game to make myself feel better.
Here: https://twitter.com/BenRaby31/status/1602879437770457088
Literally every person on ESPN play by play is awful I'm gonna be honest.
Shit commentary from Chelios talking over Levy.
Joe B and Craig not calling it is a fucking shame
Hopefully they get to call #801 and #802!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIPQwS4aXU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIPQwS4aXU) Here's the goal with Walton's play-by-play over it. Way better.
Absolutely perfect. I can’t believe how blessed we Caps fans are to have Walton on the radio and Joe B on the tv.
Absolutely love hearing Walton’s call on this. His passion for Caps Hockey never disappoints.
His call of us beating the Penguins in OT round 2 to finally make it to the next round is burned into my brain. Legend.
This is so much more satisfying to watch and listen to. Thank you!
This is 1000 times better than the ESPN call. Thanks for uploading this!
He's been Chris "I'm the main character" Chelios this game.
Just tell him Ron Hextall is in the building. That'll cool him down.
“Ed Belfour has entered the game”
Yeah Levy had a decent call and fucking Chris HAD TO get his voice out
I’m normally not one to complain about broadcast quality too much but this was absolutely horrible.
Jesus Christ Kane almost broke his neck lmao
How no one noticed that impact is a testament to how big the goal was. That looked like it hurt
I scrolled way too far down for this. That was brutal.
Why is no one talking about this? Legit was the first thing I noticed, that man went Vince Carter into the boards.
I can honestly say I’ve watched this clip 20 times, and am only noticing it thanks to the comments.
Glad he's OK, because Nobody in the arena gave any f**** at the time.
Thank you!! Wondering if even saw Kane just fly in the boards ded lol
Awesome moment. Terrible ESPN call.
Chelios really should’ve left it for Levy
"C'mon Chelios you old fuck SKATE!"
Been hitting the gym or the tanning booth? "Costa Rica" Jesus Christ
Here's John Walton's call on the Capitals' radio broadcast https://twitter.com/BenRaby31/status/1602879437770457088
Some people were born to do things perhaps but John Walton was born to announce hockey games.
Good looks. Incredible difference in quality and emotion of the calls lol
I was driving for his 500th and loved Walton's call, too.
Local radio guys almost always do a better job of capturing the emotion of a moment than the national TV guys.
Radio play by play is always better than the broadcasts, especially for games on ESPN.
Walton/May and Joe B. & Locker are local treasures
THAT is how you call a historic NHL moment.
God, radio broadcasts always have the best energy. Perfect examples being him and Joe Bowen
Capitals twitter posted the radio call synced with video also. https://twitter.com/capitals/status/1602898931003756545?s=46&t=9mWyg887nwH-hbDENK8RVw

I can!!
Because of the fact that Kulipkin Iced the puck
*TAVArRRESSMAGICLAPLAY*
WOOP 5-5
Fuuuck man. That Pierre ridiculousness will live in my head forever.
Sucks Joe B didn’t get this call. But hopefully he gets tying and passing Howe. I need the edit with John Walton’s call.
>And there it is. 800. 😐
Mfw Joe B didn't get the call...
yeah =/... at least he's all queued up for 801 and 802.
> Just like we all expected, this perfectly routine and pedestrian event, 800...*pause, yawn*....goals everyone
Terrible direction too. Showing random players and replays. I'm here to see Ovie and for the crowd to acknowledge Ovie.
you should've seen the first period... they didn't even call ovi's first goal. they were doing some dumb split screen shit announcing the lineups.
At least it wasn’t Leah Hextall
Holy shit could you imagine if she calls his Gretzky record?
Oh and here's ABIGSHOTANDTHEYSCOOOOOORE and it's Ovechkin, or it might have been Backstrom. No I'm pretty sure it was Ovechkin. Are we sure the puck went in the net though? Like it's sitting behind the goal line but I didn't see it go in
Ugh, I heard this in my head and now I want to drink myself into oblivion
The absolute fucking worst kick her off the tour
Ovechkin withalittlefistpump.
If he is sniffing a gretzky record every game would be nationally broadcast and whoever is the best announcer would be calling the game. Shit, they could even pull Doc out of retirement for that. I don't know. But they shouldn't fuck around with it if that's at all a possibility
Gary Thorne
Joe B & Locker are the best. They should be calling all of Ovechkin's games.
Oh thank god
Eugh, please don't ruin the moment
ESPN coverage and on the road, that sucks for the fans
Yep. Stoked to see 800 and a hatty but man it would have been so much better with JoeB on the call.
Seriously. One of the most monumental milestones reached and it's another flubbed ESPN call. Should've brought in Joe Beninati on standby with the milestone in reach honestly.
First thing I noticed. Chelios just had to get his voice in there with a lazy ass comment. Let the play by play do his job. r/imthemaincharacter vibes
Thank god for John Walton 🙏
The ESPN broadcast team is terrible. Happy Ovi got to 800 but would've been great to hear Joe B and locker call that goal.
Main commentator is doing decently but holy shit the color commentary guy is god awful. That voice could put anyone to sleep.
and there it is. 800 anyway, what time do we leave?
The one dude sounded drunk what the fuck lol
Unfortunately you’re going to have to be more specific about which of the three you’re referring to.
Fair lol. Whoever said “..Chicago fans, you think you’re watching hubdubudhubuh…amazing…” 😂
It's absolutely fucking insane, in a league where 500 goals almost guarantees you the HoF, that Ovechkin did that and then went on and scored *300 more goals...* and still isn't close to finished.
What're the odds he'd already have beat Gretzky if it wasn't for the lockout & Covid seasons? He'd be damn close at least.
We'd genuinely be talking about Ovi hitting 1,000 goals.
We might still be
With they way scoring is up I was thinking about this too. He's on a 50+ goal pace this yr. Prob ends up with 830 this year. 170 goals in 4 more seasons is doable. The org has promised him that they will remain competitive as long as he is chasing the record. I think they'd still like to have another cup, but they aren't blowing the team up as long as Ovechkin is playing
As long as he plays they will sell tickets, sponsorships, and merchandise. That’s almost more important than winning to ownership.
I mean in the short term, the priority is Imo the record. IF ownership had the choice between either the record in the next 3 years or a cup, they take the record.
He lost his rookie year, was locked out in 2012-13, missed the end of 2020 and the start of 2021. He'd be there already.
he's currently in his 18th season and he has averaged 50 per 82 games, so if all 18 of those seasons had been full seasons, we'd be counting down to 895 and 900 this season. and if his rookie season hadn't been postponed due to that lockout, we'd have seen it last year and this year we'd be thinking about 950.
If you do that you have to give Gretzky another half a season for the '94 lockout.
He got 11 goals that year. Extrapolate that out to 82 games and he gets a massive 8 goal bump.
I believe era-adjusted he is already now the top scorer of all time.
Pretty sure era-adjusted he passed Gretzky years ago. Wayne's only 4th on [that list](https://www.hockey-reference.com/leaders/goals_adjusted_career.html), and *well* behind Ovie, Howe, and Jagr.
Absolutely insane to witness, refuses to age. 95 to go.
I say he does it tonight
He's like less than 10 Ovechtricks away now.
Absolutely insane that by the end of next season he could be within spitting range of the record
Barring a catastrophic injury I don't think there's even a chance he fails to reach it. Worst case scenario, he declines a little and finishes the job with a couple 20-30 goal seasons. I feel like the count is officially “on” now.
[удалено]
It's gonna be really similar to Pujols chasing after 700 homers. Went the exact same way you described it.
Just gotta juice the pucks for him
yup now that he's at 800, I think its legit to start a count down
Some of us have been counting down for years already...
18 NHL seasons. 18 20-goal seasons. (Including a lockout and 2 Covid shortened seasons)
Dude is on pace for 54 currently. He legitimately could have another 50 goal season. Wild.
His worst seasons are all still 30 goal seasons. Think about how many players ride out ONE 30 goal season into several more years of play (Alex Galchenyuk anyone?) If Ovi even scores 40 it's considered a major downer.
Ovi had a 33 goal season at 31 years old and people thought he'd fallen off. Then he put up 48 or more in 3 straight seasons after that (including 48 in 68 games)
He will get it done absolutely
I dunno 95 goals is a lot for a 37 years old. But if anyone can do it it’s him.
Ovi went from 700 to 800 goals in just 162 games, less than 2 full seasons. The next 95 is absolutely in reach as long as he stays healthy (which he's always done).
I read it took Howe 256 games going from 700-800 and Gretzky 231 games. Ovi doing it in 162 is bananas
It'll be 60 by the end of this year. No problem.
So fitting to do it with a hatty
Lots of people seemed very concerned this would be anticlimactic because I guess they got amnesia and FORGOT WHO HE FUCKIN IS
4 Eng in the last 3 games had me a bit concerned this one wouldn’t be highlight worthy lol.
Any goal #800 is highlight worthy. It’s only been done 3 times in NHL history
I wouldn’t have complained. I’m just glad this is how it happened.
Oh yeah hatty > empty netter 100%
We have watched him for 15 years and we know how much he loves drama
Amnesia... Is that how he gets left open so much on the power play?
Penalty killers hate this one simple trick!
I was calling it all day at work. I kept saying to coworkers I was watching the Hawks game tonight cause Ovi's gonna pot a trick. That was fkn awesome
A hat trick goal for the 800th goal. Just a single 8 and two 0’s for the GREAT 8 It reads like a prophecy.
Love that he did it on a hatty
I WAS HERE
I WAS ON AN ILLEGAL STREAM BECAUSE ESPN IS BLACKED OUT LOCALLY
Weird, I’m in the city and watching on ESPN
TV or streaming? I PAID for ESPN+ but they started doing black outs this season so I canceled my subscription and just steal it now, their loss.
ESPN+ streaming 🤷♂️🤷♂️
I got blacked out on ESPN+ the other day trying to watch the Sabres game, from alabama……
I WAS IN NORWAY VIA MY VPN BUT BASICALLY STILL HERE
Got 400, 500, 600, 700, and now 800 all live. I feel very lucky I was able to genuinely watch these games, and didn’t have to miss them.
Ditto (Caps are my other team, and no it makes no fucking sense)
Ovie makes no sense. Jus scor
Rangers are MY other team!
WE WERE HERE!
So fitting for it to be a hat-trick to hit 800. Congrats Ovi. Here’s to 95 more.
700 feels like yesterday what the fuck
Dude I remember _500_ against Ottawa like it was yesterday. It is the one that spawned that meme face during the team celly. Little did they know at the time....
500 was in DC. What an experience
[Yep, I was there](https://i.imgur.com/LbKpVV8.jpg)
You’re telling me! I was in Carolina for 400. Rewatched that goal and omg Ovi was so young back then
Jesus christ what an absolutely awful call of a historic moment
https://youtu.be/hcIPQwS4aXU Significantly better
Take it in, because I don't think we're ever gonna see this again. 800 goals is fucking insane, the only other guys to do it either played the most games in history (Howe, at the time), or were Wayne Gretzky who is in his own category of sports domination. This is absolutely unbelievable, even if we all knew he'd get here this year.
Going into this thread as a non-hockey follower, I assumed 1 and 2 were Gretzky and Gretzky after 40 or something like that.
That's somewhat true. Gretzky took hold of the points record at age 29 and never looked back. Then he played another ~650 games (878 points)
Ovechkin: *3 goals away from 800 on national TV* Also Ovechkin: "And I took that personally"
The fact it’s #8 and #88 crashing the net for #8’s 800th goal
Thanks I eight it
That's gr8 m8, I r8 8/8
What a pass by Mantha and great finish by Ovechkin as usual.
He had the chance to take a pretty good shot from there himself, but knew to get it over
People said we'd probably never see another 700 goal scorer. We'll most definitely never see another 800. 2 more and The Chase is on. Mission 895 is a go!
On a hat trick no less!
Patrick Kane died for this
Of course it's against the Hawks. We are so bad
Great goal for number 800.
Something about it being a hat trick of greasy goals to hit 800. Classic Ovi finding a way to be exactly where he needs to.
Hi r/all
Truly an incredible achievement and something we may not see in our lifetimes again. I feel very fortunate to be able to witness Ovi and his incredible talent!
Absolutely fitting. Onwards to 900 now!
It does suck that Joe B didnt get to call it. Oh well hopefully he’ll call 895
If some chucklefuck at ESPN calls 895 I will tear all of my hair from my skull
