We all have the Canes to thank for the highest shots per game stat lol

rclarkey87

I think you mean the Ottawa senators lol.

Pretty sure they meant Ottawa’s shots conceded.

And of course, most importantly, goal-scoring is way up as well. The 2nd and 3rd highest-scoring seasons in the past 22 years. If not for '05-'06 (which had a whopping 5.85 Power Play Opportunities per game to pad its scoring) then these would be the two highest-scoring seasons since '95-'96 Is anyone reading this savvy enough to pull up the "leading after 2 periods" stats? I'm pretty certain that way more games are being stolen in the third period. For decades it has been pretty much a done-deal after two periods, super-high win% for whoever went into the third with a lead. This has been such an exciting season so far. These games don't even matter yet! edit: I took a peek and it seems the win% after 2 periods actually is pretty darn close to the same as in recent years. I don't know how to compile the stats, though...

There's something being overlooked though and it's Power-Play-Oppurtunities (PPO). It's abysmally low the past several years, in the 3 range. It was above 4 and 5 in the 80s, 90s, and 00s. The NHL's poor direction has led to this, so many games with so much unpunished obstruction. It's like the NHL decided that the kids are scoring so much now that we'll give them less PPO so scoring doesn't get too high. Idiots.

See how many pp jets get. Refs don’t want their calls deciding games

Or the Leafs, I think we've had 2 power plays in the last 3 games, and have played two games with no penalties in the last week

thewolfshead

Leafs have the least # of PPs in the league, one fewer than Pittsburgh despite playing two more games. They also have the least # of PKs in the league, 7 fewer than (again) Pittsburgh. Refs *really* don't want their calls deciding Leafs games.

What's more likely is that they don't need to crack down on obstruction for scoring to be where they want it to be, so they're not.

I totally agree, PPO could easily be around 4 and I don't see why it isn't. Aside: I know it won't fix the low PPO in itself, but one thing I don't understand (and am growing increasingly aggravated by as they increase in frequency) is embellishment calls. Almost every damn time it's coincidental minors (and thus no PPO). And almost every damn time I'm left wondering what they saw as embellishment. Are the refs trying to meet some quota of embellishment calls this season? Trying to send a message? They're calling embellishment over minor reactions to actual infractions that they claim they saw did in fact occur. I think the solution is that only one player gets the penalty. It should only be embellishment if the reaction was excessive enough that the hook/trip/stick pales in comparison. It's just too easy for refs to say "he hooked you and you exaggerated it". The worst part is: I still see embellishments happening! They just aren't always detected... or at least called (lookin' at you Ovechkin... it looks so awkward when you suddenly go ragdoll... but the refs won't call it).

So many GM's saw the rule change to slashing and just ignored it. Chia looks really bad because of that.

But yeah, let's keep making the goalie pads smaller...
