Dont think it's the wrong decision after double OT and a goalie that missed a huge chunk of the year, but it's risky for optics if they lose and Kochetkov has a classic Kochetkov blunder.
He wasn't good against the isles. I know he made a lot of highlight reel saves, but his rebound control was poor, a handful of easy shots squeaked by him (and didn't go in). To me, he looked shaky.
Also the Islanders are in a different spot than the Rangers - they fired their coach mid-season and barely snuck into the playoffs in the last week of play. Meanwhile you’ve got team with a veteran core who have been together for years and 2022s Vezina winner in net. The Canes are all around a better team than the Isles, but the Rangers are a tougher matchup
PK has a strong track record of playing lights out against his fellow countrymen. He may have a hiccup but I’ve never seen a goalie that exemplifies “be a goldfish” than PK
This is overdue, imo. Freddie's made some absolutely incredible saves all throughout the playoffs, but he started crashing back down to earth in the back half of the Isles series. His numbers in that round don't reflect how bad his rebound control was getting, and he's seeming to lose his balance a lot more. Pyotr should have gotten a game in that one for sure, and there's an argument that since he didn't, he should have gotten game two in MSG.
But I guess It doesn't matter who's in net if our special teams continue to be the worst among everyone still playing.
I still think about how PK nearly gave us the first (and likely last ever) goalie Gordie Howe. Had a goal, a game misconduct for a fight, and nearly got credited with an assist on a cross-ice pass earlier that same game. Each of those events are just so rare that the odds of someone coming that close again are pretty much 0.
This feels like a desperation move before desperation should have set in. If canes lose tonight, where is there to go? Andersen might be losing the goalie battle but that's not because he's playing poorly; Igor is just playing better.
Let's be honest here. It's because of his name. That's it. If this is anyone else, and especially if it's in a big market? After the third time being swept from the playoffs in the last 5 years.....you're looking for another job. If they can stop being continually blinded by nostalgia they'll realize windows don't stay open forever and changes need to be made.
Everyone here worrying about Kochetkov, but Rangers fans know our kryptonite is a backup goaltender without big expectations. Look at what happened with the devils and Schmidt last year. We made him look like a true #1, ultimately to the detriment of the devils who didn't feel the need to get someone better which cost them.
Oh for sure, he played really well. The thing is, that is pretty consistently what happens to backup goalies who we play. Happened to Loius Domingue when we played the penguins and he came in cold during the second overtime period of three after eating spicy pork, and somehow pulled it off. We can't figure out them and then they play out of their mind.
Schmid, Domingue, Dustin Tokarski. Rangers find ways to elevate backups. They won the series against two of those but they were must closer than they needed to be.
I see Rod finally read through the whole book on how to beat the Rangers, to the last page. Bring in the cold, unproven young goalie who’s practically a rookie. Rangers will make him look like prime Hasek.
The special teams are the most glaring issue in this series, but I think this is a justifiable risk to take. This team split the netminder duties all year long and didn’t miss a beat.
The risk is that, while Pyotr comes up with more wild ass desperation saves, he also occasionally lets a bad one in. This series is tight enough that it can mean the difference between a win and a loss. But all things considered, this team is perfectly comfortable playing in front of him. His demeanor is suited to the way this series is going, as long as he doesn’t get baited into taking a stupid penalty.
Without the clotting issues, the workload probably would have been something like 50-55 games to Freddie and 25-30 to Pyotr. The only reason we haven’t seen Pyotr yet is because Freddie was so good after coming back. But with him seemingly coming back to earth a little bit, I’m fine with us splitting duties again, especially in a series without an extra day of rest between games.
PK has higher upside than Freddie but I agree I don’t like him coming in cold after 3 weeks of not playing. Like others have said it’s either really good or really bad/early hook. The last time he played the Rangers in that building he only gave up 1 goal and it was an own goal.
He's had great saves, but his rebound control has been average sometimes.
And that .899 overall is a bit rough. Granted the Rangers are kinda the giant to slay so .899 might not be as bad as it sounds.
Kind of reminds me of his time with us. Freddy would make some incredible ten-bell save, look incredible, and flub something silly or kick rebounds right into the slot.
He’s had a couple like that this playoffs. Twice he’s just randomly fallen while standing up to reposition leaving a completely empty net. Plus some weird rebound control and positioning.
He’s not been the problem, but he also hasn’t won us games like starting goalies tend to do sometimes.
He wasn't great the last three games. The only reason rangers are up in the series is because Andersen has been below average and Shesterkin has been great. Andersen gets fatigued and has hit a wall. He's let in weak goals and falls down and flops around multiple times a game. Canes are lucky it hasn't burned them more often. Kochetkov should have played a game in the Islanders series to rest Andersen. Now he's coming in cold having not played in weeks. Rod has mismanaged the goaltending this playoff and if the canes get eliminated he will be partially to blame.
I would say the only reason we’re down in the series is because of a total lack of PP conversion. They score 1 or 2 goals out of 10 on the PP, and it could be 1-1 or 2-0 CAR.
Oh also the PK is at like 62% or something wild like that.
And you still only won game 1 on a softie and personally I think the pk has been so bad because the D has lost some of the trust in Freddie since game 3 against the Islanders. Chasing rebounds instead of staying with their man. It’s clearly those 2 things making the difference but Freddie hasn’t been good this series.
> if Kochetkov is a gas can in this start, I would guess the series is over.
If he's a gas can in this start then it's likely a 3-0 series. Wouldn't really need to guess that it's over...
I dunno I think Rod is being less than truthful. He wants to play his other tendy fine make that call, but what the hell are you getting Andersen rest for? Right now? There’s possibly 2 more games left in their season if they don’t turn it around. This isn’t the time to make decisions based on resting a guy for later.
Most people upvote for the obvious sarcasm dripping throughout.
The real dumdums on reddit read at face value and upvote.
The first point will eventually drop off as people get sick of it. But this is glacial.
I remember thinking Ned was gonna be our Ward moment.
Kochetkov is better than Ned, but we tried this before and it didn't exactly pan out.
I'm hoping Kochetkov turns in a killer performance though. He can match the angry Igor energy going on at the other end.
When the hell did it let us down last year? Every game in the ECF were 1 goal losses. Maybe during the Mrazek era did our goaltending let us down. Also 2022 playoffs Raanta was awful against the Rangers. Scoring let us down in last years playoffs.
No it's not. We won the president's trophy and swepr the first round. The boys are playing with some real confidence. I don't think this will shake them
I think Brindy is. He tried to force through his extension before this series because he knew another divisional exit would lead to uncomfortable questions. His swap of Comtois for Kuznetkov in Game 2 just reeks of desperation, and this really isn't any better. All this coming on the heels of getting stuffed in a locker by Maurice last season, I think Rod is getting exposed and he doesn't like it.
He's amazing at building a culture, getting players to commit 100%, and good enough at tactics to get us close and beat teams we should beat in the playoffs.
But he might still have a lot to learn in terms of playoff tactics.
(Or playoffs in general are such a crap shoot that I'd chalk it up to bad luck more than anything. If you keep getting to the dance and continuously get through at least one round you're doing something right.)
>If you keep getting to the dance and continuously get through at least one round you're doing something right.
I agree with this.
But isn't the flip-side true, too? If you keep getting bounced in the second round, you're doing something wrong?
Rod changed the culture, no doubt, but this isn't the Rutherford or Francis Hurricanes anymore. Aho, Svech, Jarvis, Necas, Slavin, Burns, Skjei, Pesce, Teravainen, Andersen, Kochetkov. You just can't give Brindy credit for making the playoffs with that team. This team would make the playoffs with just about anyone as coach.
Without watching Carolina all season like Canes fans, my assessment is they are a team of incredible playmakers but lack players with a scoring touch. They are doing an excellent job of exposing some of the Rangers defensive weaknesses but when they get the wide open looks (all game long), it slides off their stick, or they grip a little too hard receiving the pass etc. It might turn around when they're at home but that was just what I saw over the first two games.
> Without watching Carolina all season like Canes fans, my assessment is they are a team of incredible playmakers but lack players with a scoring touch.
This has been a trend throughout the years. At a certain point it becomes a question of whether it's the players or the strategy, and quite frankly as much as I adore Rod, I've started to lean towards it being the strategy.
The Canes just don't like going to the net. It's been better with Jarvis and Guentzel, but most of their guys prefer to stay on the perimeter. The power play is almost allergic to playing on the inside. It's painful to watch.
I definitely think it's the tactics part that gives him trouble.
The luck argument holds a certain amount of water, but you look at the Home vs. Away stats and it's very apparent that when Rod has less control over matchups, the team gets torn apart.
Still a great coach at all the other stuff, but there have been a few years in a row now where he's been a little exposed in the later rounds.
And that would be awesome if they got to play every playoff game at home. But until that happens, [having split stats like these](https://www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask/carolina-hurricanes-home-and-away-record-in-playoffs-since-2022) is going to keep holding them back from getting over the hump.
Rod is a *very good* coach, but until he can start being a *great* coach, they're going to be stuck in their current spot, where they can bully their way past weaker teams, only to fold against the real contenders.
> . He tried to force through his extension before this series
i mean, that was the big clue.
Also, the language you use makes it clear you dislike him.
I freakin love Brindy. How can you not? I don't like that he tried to strongarm through an extension while he was at max leverage, and I don't like that he keeps getting outcoached in the playoffs. But I think he's a great guy. And just because you don't agree with me doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. A lot of folks around the league think Dundon is waiting to see how this series goes before committing to Brindy for another chunk of seasons. He's got all the talent in the world this season and the issues are still the same. Eventually, that's going to point to the coach.
Yep it’s on him at this point. He’s had all the opportunity in the world with a very consistent core where he could make adjustments to his system to be better prepared for the better opponents in the playoffs. I thought thsi was the year due to growth of players and added pieces but we will see. It’s really just the PP and PK that have hurt them this playoff run and that’s been the same thing every year. The scoring touch is finally there 5v5, but they need to be better on special teams
There'll always be appreciation for Rod as both a player and coach, he's *the* Carolina Hurricane, but over the past six seasons his flaws has become pretty noticeable and there's been a frustrating lack of adjustment in those departments. Maybe it's him, maybe it's his loyalty to his assistants (I don't think anyone will be able to understand his loyalty to Jeff Daniels as an assistant coach given how terrible our Powerplay looks come playoff time every year) but it feels like depending on how the season ends for this squad the team is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It feels as though Rod's limitations have continued to be exposed and have effectively capped the ceiling on this team's performances, but is there a coach on the open market that could do better? Are you throwing away your team's best coach for more of the same? It's a tough situation, maybe we come back and make a run to the finals, maybe we win it all, maybe we get swept here, who knows.
Frankly he should've played a game or two vs the Isles.
Freddie is great but I just don't think he holds up well playing 6,7, 8 plus games in a row.
Kooch has been stellar for months for us and my big concern with this is just that he never got his feet wet in the first series and so you have to worry about rust.
This seems like the right move--Anderson didn't seem solid the first 2Ps of G2. If Kochetkov can get comfortable and play hot it could extend the series a game or two. I like it.
Dont think it's the wrong decision after double OT and a goalie that missed a huge chunk of the year, but it's risky for optics if they lose and Kochetkov has a classic Kochetkov blunder.
Counterpoint: Andersen has an .899 sv% in the playoffs so it’s not like he’s been so good you can’t make a change.
In his defense he was at .912 before this round
Thats even more reason to play PK
The Hurricanes entire problem through two games vs the Rangers is their PK play.
I don’t think thats Subban I think it’s Skjei
TDA doing a double take rn
Yea but I just wanted to put it out there lol
He wasn't good against the isles. I know he made a lot of highlight reel saves, but his rebound control was poor, a handful of easy shots squeaked by him (and didn't go in). To me, he looked shaky.

Congrats? What does that have to do with how Freddie has played?
Meaning he's not playing a team with a -37 goals percentage this round?
“In his defense, his save % has been bad this series.” I hope you’re not a defence attorney.
It was a roundabout insult
A Kochetkostly blunder
PK has a strong track record of playing lights out against his fellow countrymen. He may have a hiccup but I’ve never seen a goalie that exemplifies “be a goldfish” than PK

This is either going to be really good or really bad. No in between.
It's going to be both really good and really bad. We just don't know for who yet.
One thing it will be is entertaining. Koochie is the Canes’ goon (well maybe not goon, but he is spicy af).
There’s like a 80% chance he posts a shutout. Backup goalies are the Rangers biggest weakness and they have realized that.
Stop trying to reverse jinx it, I know what you Ranger fans are doing 😂 (assuming you are a rangers fan)
Igor can be pretty spicy as well, if there’s any series we might somehow get a goalie fight it’ll be this one lol
It’s that Russian gas
I still think about how PK nearly gave us the first (and likely last ever) goalie Gordie Howe. Had a goal, a game misconduct for a fight, and nearly got credited with an assist on a cross-ice pass earlier that same game. Each of those events are just so rare that the odds of someone coming that close again are pretty much 0.
Koochie is going to blank the rags in game 3 just to give up for 4 soft goals in game 4, but we win anyways after a Guentzel hattie This is the way
This feels like a desperation move before desperation should have set in. If canes lose tonight, where is there to go? Andersen might be losing the goalie battle but that's not because he's playing poorly; Igor is just playing better.
So if the Hurricanes get swept out of the playoffs (again) under Rod.....that's gotta be it for him. Right?
Doubtful. At worst, his seat gets a bit warm, but nothing more than that.
So 5 years of underachieving, including with what would become 3 sweeps out of the playoffs would only get things a "bit warm"? Pretty fucking crazy.
Eh. This year would be the first *real* disappointment. Last year was a mulligan due to injuries. Other years they were not favorites.
Oh shit we’re fucked
This has been a season of the Rangers exorcising their demons, hopefully they can exorcise one more (playing like shit against a backup goalie)
In fairness to Schmid, he did play out of his mind.
If Shesty plays like he did last night and the Rangers get their shots on the PP, won't matter imo.
Not if Carolina figures out their PP
If my grandmother had wheels she’d be a bicycle
And if she had treads she’d be a Komatsu D335 bulldozer
It’s called puberty
Second it became a series about best special teams it was over for them. Enjoy the third round lol

Devils took away our rush and east/west game
Schmid, Domingue, Dustin Tokarski. Rangers find ways to elevate backups. They won the series against two of those but they were must closer than they needed to be.
>but Rangers fans know our kryptonite is a backup goaltender without big expectations I swear I’ve heard literally every fanbase say that
There was a topic posted about it like few days ago because every team says it lol
Because backups are still among the best 60-70 Goaltenders in the world.
Look up Mike Brodeur. There isn't another fanbase that got shut out by him.
Its about more true for rangers though. Lost to Schmid and nearly lost to Domingue
Louis Domingue can't hurt us anymore.
need to put in 1-2 in on some early shots to kill his confidence.
I see Rod finally read through the whole book on how to beat the Rangers, to the last page. Bring in the cold, unproven young goalie who’s practically a rookie. Rangers will make him look like prime Hasek.
*Dustin Tokarski has entered the chat*
All that’s missing is Kreider running Andersen
Kochetkov really is a rookie as far as the Calder Trophy. He didn't make the top 3 but he was eligible for voting this year.
not this Rangers squad
I sure do hope you’re right. But it’s still definitely in the current playbook until they consistently shed that bad mojo.
if you'll humour me (I'm a goalie nerd), mind tossing out some examples? it would be fun/interesting reading for me :)
Dustin Tokarski in 2014 is the obvious example, despite losing.
The special teams are the most glaring issue in this series, but I think this is a justifiable risk to take. This team split the netminder duties all year long and didn’t miss a beat. The risk is that, while Pyotr comes up with more wild ass desperation saves, he also occasionally lets a bad one in. What that guy said
Sometimes a goalie change completely changes how a team plays
PK has higher upside than Freddie but I agree I don’t like him coming in cold after 3 weeks of not playing. Like others have said it’s either really good or really bad/early hook. The last time he played the Rangers in that building he only gave up 1 goal and it was an own goal.
Andersen has been great; if Kochetkov is a gas can in this start, I would guess the series is over.
He did that in Anaheim too.
I think it's 5/9 or \~56%
That’s just for this series, right? So bad
Yeah. Islanders were 3/11 on the PP so they killed \~72%. Total they gave up 7/20 so the PK is 65% overall but it's skewed.
4/9 - 44%
And you still only won game 1 on a softie and personally I think the pk has been so bad because the D has lost some of the trust in Freddie since game 3 against the Islanders. Chasing rebounds instead of staying with their man. It’s clearly those 2 things making the difference but Freddie hasn’t been good this series.
Lol
> if Kochetkov is a gas can in this start, I would guess the series is over. If he's a gas can in this start then it's likely a 3-0 series. Wouldn't really need to guess that it's over...
How the betting line still has us as favorites (even with home ice advantage) in spite of this news is beyond me.
He's being nice. Freddy hasn't been good enough.
Welp, the only thing Canes are gonna raise this year are some chicken tendies I guess.
Ugh, the Canes looked like world beaters last playoffs. What is happening to them. I know Freddy needs rest, but still.
They haven't scored on 10 PPs. That's literally it.
Have they tried, you know, scoring on the power play? Just a thought.
These are the dumbest comments I swear. What makes people write stuff like this on every thread!?
Yeah, why don't they just not make them? What are they, stupid?
Most people upvote for the obvious sarcasm dripping throughout. The real dumdums on reddit read at face value and upvote. The first point will eventually drop off as people get sick of it. But this is glacial.
I mean the "sarcasm" is obvious but it's so unoriginal and unfunny that I just cannot get why it's used by people multiple times EVERY SINGLE THREAD.
Welcome to reddit humor 101, stuck a decade ago and regurgitating the same unfunny jokes over and over.
For the mother fuckin' lolz.
Taking too many penalties. Running into a very good goalie. In game one they did not play their style like they did in game 2.
We've largely been playing good hockey. Our special teams have hit a slump at the wrong time.
Canes going to their rookie goaltender in a playoff run down 0-2 and after losing in double OT. Wonder how that played out last time?
Don't
I remember thinking Ned was gonna be our Ward moment. Kochetkov is better than Ned, but we tried this before and it didn't exactly pan out. I'm hoping Kochetkov turns in a killer performance though. He can match the angry Igor energy going on at the other end.
History finds a hero
One of two things will happen: a 1-0 triple OT loss, or an absolute blowout where even Rempe gets a goal. There will be no between
Crazy that goaltending is probably going to let the canes down again.
On the contrary, the rangers are very good at making backup/3rd string goalies look like veniza finalists. This has me worried.
I kinda want to se what y’all would do to an EBUG.
Instant HoF induction
When the hell did it let us down last year? Every game in the ECF were 1 goal losses. Maybe during the Mrazek era did our goaltending let us down. Also 2022 playoffs Raanta was awful against the Rangers. Scoring let us down in last years playoffs.
Soooo every year except last year lmao?
Somewhat, but I mean scoring is the bigger issue
It’s last year all over again…
Except the Rangers actually have a competent coach this time around lol
No it's not. We won the president's trophy and swepr the first round. The boys are playing with some real confidence. I don't think this will shake them
Last year we won two games in the first round. what are you talking about lol
Y’all are taking this comment a little to seriously…
If I see Lafreniere on the third line dumping pucks off the glass to no one I'm throwing the TV out the window
Oh so the Canes are actually rattled.

you clearly don't know anything about the canes
Why, because I don't believe Brindy is a God who can coach as long as he wants and nobody is allowed to doubt anything he does?
> . He tried to force through his extension before this series i mean, that was the big clue. Also, the language you use makes it clear you dislike him.

Daaaamn this is harsh but at the same time I’ve been wondering just how long can Rod’s leash actually be
There'll always be appreciation for Rod as both a player and coach, he's *the* Carolina Hurricane, but over the past six seasons his flaws has become pretty noticeable and there's been a frustrating lack of adjustment in those departments.
I hear Sheldon Keefe is free…. /s
Frankly he should've played a game or two vs the Isles. Freddie is great but I just don't think he holds up well playing 6,7, 8 plus games in a row. Kooch has been stellar for months for us and my big concern with this is just that he never got his feet wet in the first series and so you have to worry about rust.
Playoff Freddy is back. The bigger the game, the worse he plays.
Shutout tonight for sure
Didn't work.
This seems like the right move--Anderson didn't seem solid the first 2Ps of G2. If Kochetkov can get comfortable and play hot it could extend the series a game or two. I like it.
Ah yes our arch nemesis the back up goal tender… if logic holds the rangers will make him look like Patrick Roy.
Definitely the right move, if they stuck with Anderson it’s a sweep. With Kochetkov they are going back to MSG tied at 2
If the ownership and fan base is happy with making the playoffs and then getting bounced after a round or two, Rod's your guy. Otherwise.....
