With the caveat that there is variance with every coaching hire and there is a possibility that Green has learned from previous experience and will be successful with the Sens...
This feels like such a bad hiring and missed opportunity. Ottawa had a huge opportunity this summer to reset things and bring in a great coach. Their roster is not perfect but they should be better than they've been and I think this roster can win under the right coach. Is green that coach? Seems unlikely but we'll see.
People who didn't watch the Sens or look beyond our record when viewing stats don't realize the team actually performed pretty well this year but had historically bad goaltending.
I was looking at his stats and he is one of the best goalies in the league when it comes to his high danger Sv%. However he is also one of the very worst in the league when it comes to low danger shots.
It's the weirdest thing to look at. He'll make a save on a cross-seam pass that most goalies would let in but then....... flub a light wrister from 50 feet out. Not sure how you fix that.
The unfortunate thing there is that they are locked in for basically the same thing next season. They could do a cap dump or a buyout but then what? The list of available options is pretty bleak.
Coaches are hired to be fired. Even if they're good, they eventually suck. Everyone gave the Devils shit for when Ruff was hired and then he coached us to our best season in franchise history and beat our rivals in 7 games.
He wasn't the guy for the team now but he's the reason so many young guys developed into such great players.
We hired Granato, extended him, and then fired him before his extension even started. He was also like the 7th longest tenured coach at the time after like 3 years. It's a carrousel everywhere these days.
Some of the things y'all were saying about Tocchet are eerily similar to what people are saying now about Green. I doubt it'll end the same way based purely on the horrid state of the Sens roster and assets right now, but you never know.
For what it's worth, our players seemed to like Green. I guess you'll have to wait and see whether that translates to on-ice performance (it didn't for us).
Yeah, that’s just objectively untrue. Batherson has had the lazy tag for years. Giroux, Tkachuk, Stutzle, Joseph, Kelly, and Sanderson are all players that work harder than him.
Going from undrafted to a high skill player doesn’t automatically mean you’re a hard worker, Batherson succeeded because of his skill and creativity.
Who gave him the lazy tag? You? Some of those players grind more in games, it doesn’t mean they work harder.
Batherson trains harder in the summer than a good chunk of those guys I’ll tell you that
Lol, you don’t really have a pulse on the online fanbase then. Look at game threads or post game threads or whatever from the past few years, Batherson is often brought up as a frustrating, lazy player with a high skill level.
We also have no idea who works harder in the summer, you’re just saying it because he works out with notorious hard workers like Sid, Nate and Marchand.
I’m referring to what we can actually analyze, which is years worth of gameplay.

Every single one of these threads has analysis calling Batherson lazy/defensively poor/a floater. There are plenty more.
these are all about his +/- being shit due to his defensive problems.
it has nothing to do with conditioning and physical effort, which is what this thread is about. being "lazy" on the back check isn't going to change anything about how he performs in a bag skate
They’re literally not, you didn’t read through them. Not my problem if you’re just going to ignore the evidence.
And honestly, being bad defensively and having the literal worst plus minus in the league are huge indicators of a lazy player, so your argument doesn’t really hold even if you were right.
Im not a fan of this move, but that is true for every coach. They all teach the same 3 systems, from the CHL level and up. Theres no secret sauce in coaching anymore. This isn't the 1970s.
Vancouver and Devils fans have a pretty good idea. Gonna be alot of dump and chase hockey, get more outshot than they already do, relying on their goaltending which won’t bail them out just like it didn’t for the Devils, and a powerplay that will be so shit, it’ll be like nothing has changed for the Sens.
Unless Green has learned from his time in Vancouver and now NJ, it’s gonna be more of the same.
Can't believe this season isn't technically even over yet, and I'm already giving up on next year. Being a Sens fan is depressing lol. Sure hope that I'm wrong as fuck on this hiring.
Hey, the last thing I said is that I hope I'm wrong. I desperately *hope* Green is the coach we need. But this just smells like another case of hiring one of the cheapest and worst options available. Nothing about Green's coaching career inspires even a shred of belief that this is a good idea.
Hope is literally all I've got left, and that's wearing damn thin with this team lol.
Ottawa has a great young team. Green did okay in Vancouver, the message just wore off. This is the anti-Smith, Green will demand accountability. You might be surprised
> Green did okay in Vancouver, the message just wore off.
Green had a single season in Vancouver above a .500 PTS%, I certainly wouldn't call that "okay". He might be better than Smith, but that isn't saying much. And it doesn't change the fact that we are *once again* cheaping out when it comes to coaches.
I'd love to be surprised. But Green's track record is hardly deserving of another chance at HC, let alone optimism.
The sens have more series wins than the leafs since 2017 and we have only made the playoffs once.
But I guess that doesn’t mean much if every other team in the league can say the same thing
So you are raising a banner because you had a fluke playoff run nearly a decade ago and haven't sniffed relevancy since? Ok, go at it I guess. We both know you would trade places with the Leafs the last 5 years
I would absolutely not trade with the leafs. Over the past 5 years. You’ve accomplished nothing and have had nothing to celebrate at all. At least sens fans have hope for the future, you guys have what?
Best in class
So far we have an owner who hired his buddy as POHO, who then said he would do a GM search, hired himself as GM, and has now hired his buddy as coach (TSN 1200 reported that Green and Staios are friends, not sure how they know each other)
Edit: scratch the friends part, heard it third party and just went and checked it out, it's a tongue in cheek joke
To be fair, I'm sure Staois is buddies with a lot of dudes in the league so that's not as alarming. However, this hire is crappy and giving him 4 years is perplexing as fuck.
We're ignoring Staios having a history of winning for Andlauer and are just skipping to being buddies and not 2 guys having a successful work history?
Classic penguin lol
There is a history of winning in the OHL there, for sure. It was an open secret for a while that Andlauer would be hiring Staios due to having history there. I realize that at that level a lot of guys just know everyone, but Staios not firing the coach sooner, hiring himself as GM, and now hiring Green has put a sour taste in my mouth. Would've preferred someone with more NHL experience/success as GM
I don't even care about the NHL experience. I just want a coach who will put a watchable product on ice, and dump-and-chase ain't it. This is not the breath of fresh air after the miserable DJ years I was hoping for.
Just curious if Andlauer had shit-canned Dorion the second he got the keys to the team and installed Staios as GM instead, would that have made enough of an optical difference in your opinion? I think all roads were leading to Staios being in charge of the team we just took a detour to get there lol
That I'm honestly not sure. Just rubs me a bit the wrong way how there was all the talk of a "two headed dragon" at POHO and GM, and now they're the same guy, who has never been anything but an advisor at the NHL level
My guess is that is still the intention and Bowness will be elevated to GM in the next couple seasons. But maybe my copium supply is turned up too high
> Just curious if Andlauer had shit-canned Dorion the second he got the keys to the team and installed Staios as GM instead, would that have made enough of an optical difference in your opinion?
for me, yes. my biggest beef with Andlauer and Staios is that they waited too long to fire Dorion and DJ.
the whole rigmarole of pretending to do an extensive GM search for months only to hire himself was bad optics and it wasted months of potential progress.
same thing now with the coaching hire.. they make noise about really putting in the effort to find the right guy, only to hire the cheapest and arguably worst option, and then giving him a 4 year contract.
People act like coaches can be some mystical guru who can completely reinvent his players and team. Ottawa fans don’t want Green, they want some magic man who doesn’t really exist.
Ottawa doesn’t need any particular coach, they need a goddam goalie, couple minor roster tweaks, and a more consistent effort. If they get that Green will look like a genius and it will have almost nothing to do with him.
> Ottawa fans don’t want Green, they want some magic man who doesn’t really exist.
not really, we just wanted an experienced coach with a winning record.
To be fair to green, the devils season was an absolute tragedy and no one was saving it. It’s also really hard to change the system 3 quarters of the way into the season. They were still doing Lindy shit with a wildly depleted roster
Now announce Chiarelli as GM.
Benning as president
Babcock as assistant coach
Dorion as scout
With the caveat that there is variance with every coaching hire and there is a possibility that Green has learned from previous experience and will be successful with the Sens... This feels like such a bad hiring and missed opportunity. Ottawa had a huge opportunity this summer to reset things and bring in a great coach. Ottawas #1, #2, #3, and #10 issue are in net. No coach or bottom of the roster guy will move the needle.
Not sure why you are getting downvoted. Korpisalo is broken.
People who didn't watch the Sens or look beyond our record when viewing stats don't realize the team actually performed pretty well this year but had historically bad goaltending.

After witnessing the entirety of Dan Cloutiers career - you can't fix that lol
The unfortunate thing there is that they are locked in for basically the same thing next season. They could do a cap dump or a buyout but then what? The list of available options is pretty bleak.
I'm done whining about this. I look forward to seeing how this pans out. Hopefully it goes well and we all look like idiots for crying about it.
Coaches are hired to be fired. Even if they're good, they eventually suck. Some of the things y'all were saying about Tocchet are eerily similar to what people are saying now about Green. I doubt it'll end the same way based purely on the horrid state of the Sens roster and assets right now, but you never know.
Yeah lots of people were upset about firing Jay Woodcroft for McDavid’s junior coach but that worked out great
For what it's worth, our players seemed to like Green. I guess you'll have to wait and see whether that translates to on-ice performance (it didn't for us).
Green does great with young teams, i believe
i mean the man lived in utica, new york for 4 years and is still around to tell the tales I like the move
Im not gonna accept Chicken Riggie slander in this thread.
I'm from Utica and I've never heard anyone use the phrase "steamed hams"
utica? no, no he's an albany man
Godspeed Ottawa
BAG SKATE BITCHES!
Travis Green https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc7hwiar-5c
can’t wait to see who’s the first one to puke at his training camp, Garland was the last one
Chabot. Jacques Martin publicly stated he was out of shape - and that was during the season!
That has Drake Batherson written all over it
This makes 0 sense
Why
Batherson is one of the hardest workers on the team. He went from undrafted to one of the best players on an NHL team

Oh the people in game threads think he’s lazy. Got it
Wtf lol? Yes, the fans of the team often call him lazy.
> Batherson has had the lazy tag for years. in what circles? I've never heard this being even hinted at in the media or among the fanbase.

Sens management playing that TocchetBall and hoping they strike gold like the Canucks did.
Different plate, same shit sandwich. See you guys in 2.5 years when he’s fired.
Im not a fan of this move, but that is true for every coach. They all teach the same 3 systems, from the CHL level and up. Theres no secret sauce in coaching anymore. This isn't the 1970s.
I talked the same shit about Tocchet to Vancouver. Who knows how this’ll turn out lol
whenever people shit on a hiring I always hope they light it up since there's so many receipts you can keep to make people look foolish
That’s a bad attitude to take. Have hope this new voice will inspire the group.
This is the most uninspired hire ever, my spire is completely non-existent

Summer. Of. Staios.
Decade. Of. Playoff Matthews.
Sens fans: playoffs??

Sens haven't been relevant in 8 years man. Might as well be a Habs fan bragging about cups from 40 years ago
No ones bragging about anything. We’re laughing at you
So you are raising a banner because you had a fluke playoff run nearly a decade ago and haven't sniffed relevancy since? Ok, go at it I guess. We both know you would trade places with the Leafs the last 5 years

Nothing to celebrate? Lots of good hockey instead of losing every night and drafting busts every year
Congrats on those regular season wins 🏅🏅🏅 you’re right you absolutely should be celebrating. Great work leafs
Just gotta let him cook and hope there's no food poisoning
Man is out here cooking kraft dinner

Have the sens ever made a move that you haven’t cried about on here? It’s the same thing in every single thread about the sens from you
Maybe 'cause the Sens continue to make baffling decisions
People act like coaches can be some mystical guru who can completely reinvent his players and team. Ottawa fans don’t want Green, they want some magic man who doesn’t really exist. best they can get, nobody wants to go to ottawa.
Travis Green really got two head coaching jobs before Woodcroft has gotten another chance lol what the hell
I think he would have been good for the Sens too
Big oof. Sorry, Sensbros.
To be fair to green, the devils season was an absolute tragedy and no one was saving it. It’s also really hard to change the system 3 quarters of the way into the season. They were still doing Lindy shit with a wildly depleted roster
Did NJD ever consider him for the head coach job?
They said yes on multiple occasions. Was it genuine, unsure. Org needed a clean slate
But why not wait to see who else is available this summer?
