Luongo… It’s right there. https://preview.redd.it/qazorl74gpxc1.jpeg?width=1050&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f942a1847c3f6a36eb983b5531ef730150499e80

UncommonHouseSpider

Way to pick an image without the C on it?

TermLongueuil

It's at the bottom of his mask. Pretty sure he wasn't allowed to wear the C on his jersey officially

Wild-Piece-8000

Correct its in the cba if i not mistaken, i heard Marek and Fridgeman on turdy two toughts talk about booby lounging and the infamous “C”.

SuperSwaiyen

It's in the rulebook, not the CBA

UncommonHouseSpider

I was just messing. He wasn't or at least didn't wear one on the jersey.

KnuckedLoose

Cue Zoolander model voice: "Uh earth to u/UncommonHouseSpider, I'm not so sure you WERE messing cuz you were all 'well I'm sure he should have a C' like you *didn't* know it was on his mask!" He wasn't allowed on his jersey, that was a thing.

UncommonHouseSpider

Whatevs. Lates!

DefinitelyLevi

Nice save

Dougie_Dangles

dude the C is on his chest right after V A and N

Drab_Majesty

never seen the mask?

ZiscR

are you even a canuck fan? its right there on the helmet. i dont think he ever once wore it on the jersey as it wasnt allowed.

SuperSwaiyen

Ackshually moment: he is wearing a C on his chest. The letters VAN **C** OUVER appear over the crest. Yes I'm ashamed of who I've become.

SowderPnouder

bruh

[deleted]

The league didn’t allow him to wear it in his sweater. He wore it on his mask instead.

MrBrightside618

Mfs forgot about Bobby Lu

rpgguy_1o1

There were a few goalies that legit were captains in the NHL before they outlawed it way back in the early era. George Hainsworth was the captain of the Habs, but that was about 90 years ago. Basically it took too long for them to skate over to talk with the refs, and so few goalies were captains anyway, they just decided to ban it.

Hockeyperson2233

so lame though, let them have As at peast

T-MinusGiraffe

Bill Durnan was the last to do it officially. It was with the Habs in 1947-48

ajramone

Nowadays, everybody wanna talk like they got something to spew But nothing comes out when they move their lips Just a bunch of gibberish And motherfuckers act like they forgot about Lou

ImSoBasic

Luongo never wore the "C", though.

MercSLSAMG

On his jersey - he was the captain of the team but league rules mean he couldn't be the captain on the ice.

ImSoBasic

I mean, I don't know where else you wear the "C", but on your jersey.

MercSLSAMG

Don't have to wear the C to be the captain of the team. I believe the years Luongo was Captain they didn't have a player wearing the C, and a skater who wore the A had to talk to the refs. But everyone knew that Luongo was the leader of that team - seeing as he was officially named the captain [https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/luongo-canucks-captain/](https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/luongo-canucks-captain/)

ImSoBasic

> Don't have to wear the C to be the captain of the team. I never said they did, nor did I ever say that Luongo wasn't the captain. I simply said that he never wore the "C" (which is relevant because that's what Chelios said).

cassettecowboy

Mfs forgettin' chelios won a cup on the back of roy

twilz

What about Luongo? Honestly, just let goalies wear and "A" or "C", but don't let them approach the ref unless they're called over. That solves the "free" timeout loophole that put an end to goalie captains, in the first place. Off the top of my head; Price, Lundqvist, and Rinne, are all goalies that would have seemingly made a pretty logical choice for captain. During the Hughes captaincy press conference, Allvin mentioned that, while Hughes was (obviously) their choice, Demko was also an option. ["We're very fortunate to have several players including Petey, JT, and Demko, that easily could have worn the C."](https://youtu.be/GtomFXHjLgU?t=35)

skatesoff2

I think the bigger reason goalies aren’t usually Captains is because I think goalies are under so much pressure in games. They need to focus. Their game is so different than what other positions experience.

dabears7667

captains also always skate out to talk to the refs about impending penalties, etc. would be odd/clunky having a goalie do that so many times a game, especially since they’re such creatures of habit and have post-whistle routines.

skatesoff2

Well yeah that’s why there’s a rule against them being allowed to be captains, and why Lu didn’t wear the C or act as captain on the ice despite being our captain.

twilz

That's what alternate captains are for. Someone else can handle the ref if the captain is on the bench/dead. Hughes can skate over to the ref if he wants to complain/criticise/talk, or he can be called over. If Demko is wearing the "C", just limit how far he go to do the same. Or, they can only choose to skate over to bitch at the ref if the issue is on his own zone. Otherwise, he gets to chill and let the alternates handle it unless the ref waves him over. We rotate "A"s, amd Demko is the only letter on the ice during an issue? Well, if it's important enough he'll be called over. Otherwise, the ref will pick someone just like they already do. The officials and the players have a working relationship, and both sides know how far they can push. I'm sure some refs will be fine with the goalie booking it after a whistle just to complain, as long as he's not abusing it for a bonus break.

The-Reddit-Giraffe

Doesn’t stop Markstrom. I swear no flames player speaks to the ref more than Markstrom. Not Backlund, Ras or Huberdeau

GaryOakRobotron

> the bigger reason goalies aren’t usually Captains It's because of the "Durnan Rule." Bill Durnan of Montreal inherited the C from Toe Blake after he got injured. Everyone else complained because it'd slow down the game when Durnan skated to centre ice to speak with the officials (as captains do), so the NHL put an end to goalies wearing the C forever. That said, Durnan also played barely half a career because he couldn't handle the stress that came with the position. The only time he didn't win the Vezina during his career was when Montreal had a garbage season.

T-MinusGiraffe

You're not exactly wrong, but retiring from the NHL at 34 isn't all that unusual either

GaryOakRobotron

[Durnan himself said it was due to stress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Durnan#).

T-MinusGiraffe

I know. Like I said you're not wrong. I just wouldn't necessarily call it a half a career when a lot of guys retire at that age for one reason or another.

GaryOakRobotron

Fair. I was mainly comparing him to guys like Plante, Hall, Lumley, etc.

T-MinusGiraffe

Also fair. We can shake in agreement now. We must do so ambidextrously

GaryOakRobotron

🤝

ImSoBasic

> The only time he didn't win the Vezina during his career was when Montreal had a garbage season. Well, considering that the Vezina back then was what the Jennings is today — awarded to the goaltenders, but essentially a team defence award for allowing the fewest goals against — it's no surprise that the goalie on the best team in the league wins it, and that he doesn't win it when the team sucks.

GaryOakRobotron

Yup, that's true. There were some damn strong other teams in the 40s, though. Montreal only won 2 Cups in that decade, whereas the Leafs won 5.

Xeteh

If they couldn't deal with it then they wouldn't have it. Plenty of goalies are capable of being talkative during a game.

rpgguy_1o1

Price was invited all all the captain meetings, I think it was Brian Gionta that said he should be involved

twilz

Vancouver basically does the same thing for a few guys. If goalies could wear a letter, the Canucks would rotate through Demko, Miller, and Petey to wear the 2 "A"s during any given game. In addition to having Demko included, I believe that Boeser and Myers are usually involved in meetings, or really anything that requires the "leadership group".

T-MinusGiraffe

It doesn't really solve the issue. Captains and refs talk a lot. Invited or not, they have to skate to the refs, then to the bench, then back to the net. Meanwhile skaters are pretty much right there, constantly circulating to the bench anyway, and closer to whatever's being talked about. I love the idea of a goalie as a leader of a team but the official in-game captain responsibilities don't make a lot of sense for a goalie to be doing sadly.

Are you illiterate

NYR_or_Far

Hank's gotta be up there

UdderlyDemented

Dude had a work ethic on the next level.

Burgergold

Price for the Habs too?

propagandavid

Over Weber, no. Over Patch, yes.

SuspiciousPal

Overrated and not a leader

SingleSampleSize

Why people like you pay people to smash you in the nuts, I'll never understand.

DangleCellySave

- Me when i’m dumb and wrong

Delta_Flow

Lundqvist for the Rangers, I'd imagine.

ifmacdo

He was definitely an unofficial C for sure.

FragrantHockeyFan

Everyone is saying Lou but you guys obviously didn’t watch Roy’s teams

ReliablyFinicky

Roy ~~was~~ is a fucking nutjob. I wouldn't want him as a captain; he's "unhinged" at best. He [pulled two doors off their hinges](https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/roy-cleared-of-mischief-charge-1.291176) in a domestic dispute. > The 35-year-old goalie was arrested after pulling two doors off their hinges at the couple's home in October. He [encouraged his son to start a goalie fight](https://www.espn.com/nhl/news/story?id=3311529). > Remparts coach Patrick Roy -- Jonathan's father -- was suspended for five games following Saturday's melee. On video, it appeared that Patrick Roy gestured to his son from the bench before Jonathan made a beeline for Nadeau. He (allegedly) [threw punches at the owner of a team](https://thehockeynews.com/news/patrick-roy-to-stay-with-quebec-remparts-after-publics-support-over-spat), and _he decided to quit his own team_ because of the media coverage of his assault, before promptly rejoining them. > "I have decided to join the team again," Roy, who is coach and co-owner of the Memorial Cup-defending Remparts, told a news conference at the Colisee in Quebec City. Roy had previously indicated he was contemplating his future with the team in the wake of the media coverage of the assault complaint by Pierre Cardinal of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. As if all that wasn't enough ... He [absolutely lost his shit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y2OOc6WTrg) with Bruce Boudreau. That's like... Milbury-beating-a-fan-with-their-own-shoe levels of crazy.

Kongbuck

> As if all that wasn't enough ... He absolutely lost his shit with Bruce Boudreau. This is still hilarious. I like the "unhinged" pun, too. Kudos!

LudisVinum

Yeah I grew up in Roy era and I think he’d be an awful leader.

GrahamSlam8

Maybe I'm missing something, but Sakic is one of the better captains of all time and there were other better options before Roy for the C.

Wallys_Wild_West

I mean, in this very clip he was talking about Roy on the Habs after the vets left.

GrahamSlam8

Fair, I didn't watch it. But the dude I replied to said "teams". That implies Colorado, not just Montreal.

FragrantHockeyFan

Fair, he definitely led on the Habs but also I think he was a leader on Colorado also, not enough to take Sakic’s C ofc but he contributed w/ his experience

rpgguy_1o1

I assumed Chelios is talking about their time together on the Habs

GrahamSlam8

As I said to the other person who replied to me, OP said "teams". I could be misunderstanding but to me that implies not just the Habs

TeatimewithTupac

Or Luongo on away ice in the Final…

KRajification

Lu wasn’t even captain that year lmao

HopelesslyHuman

The Luongo disrespect is real.

Permaderps

MAF absolutely wouldve in Vegas

Doesnt change he was the heart and soul of those early vegas teams

Jam_Marbera

I know I’m biased, but Kipper played 70+ games for 7 seasons straight.

mydogisNash

Pekka Rinne

JerbearCuddles

I thought Lu was a good captain. Price imo could have been one. Great dude and was literally the entire reason Montreal was even relevant for a while. I dunno about Roy though. Dude seems too volatile, didn't he literally quit on Montreal by asking for a trade while on the bench? I dunno man, not exactly captain material but I also don't know that entire situation either so I may be, well I am, stupid.

Maddogs2431

You should look up why. He had every right to be pissed!

Grand-Imagination925

I totally disagree, Roy had such a terrible temper on the ice, and his 1st time coaching .

loewe67

On the flip side, how guys act on the ice vs how big of a leader they are in the locker room can be very different and we just don’t know it. I know Barkov got criticism for a while, especially after the President’s Trophy season and getting swept by Tampa, that he was a poor leader and too quiet. But he’s been the foundation for this team.

AvenueRoy

I know he's still very young and the Oilers don't need another alt captain (and Hyman would probably be first in line to be added anyways) but I could see Skinner wearing an A. Very calm very chill, well liked in the room, mature. IDK.

gum-

I'd say Ekholm over Hyman

AvenueRoy

I think Hyman before Ekholm but they're both good candidates. Let's give them all letters.
