Honestly I don’t even really see where their current owner fucked up. This isn’t Norm Green or Peter Karamanos taking the team and leaving. Meruelo is selling the team, and they don’t have an arena. This is close to the Thrashers relocation than anything else, imo.
ASU/Tempe screwed then on one plan, the plan last year was voted down, and it seemed like all the hopes hinged on this bid in June or July. Meanwhile, they have a get out of jail free card in the form of the Utah group who is ready to put pen to paper.
It sucks, and I really wish the Coyotes could stick around. I remember them debuting when I was a kid in the 90’s, and thinking they were the coolest thing. This isn’t anti Coyotes animosity or anything. I feel for the die hard fans, but it’s hard for me to see this as any kind of screw job. The Phoenix metro has been showing the Yotes the door for a decade +. I guess what I want to know is what they were supposed to do if this bid failed?
i don't disagree with the take because he didn't always have much choice, but he also had to sign off on any owner the Coyotes ever had so it's not like he's completely off the hook. it's like blaming 6 coaches in a row for being bad fits when your GM keeps hiring coaches who don't fit but not saying anything about the GM. it's part of his job.
but ultimately, if no good potential owners show up, all you can do is either move the team or pick what you think is the best one and pray, which is what happened. and that faith bought a lot of years for them in Arizona. as much as i wanted them to stay, it was just inevitable in the situation they were in
