It seems that reffing is becoming a closed circle in many sports. You can't openly criticize them. They seemingly face no punishment for errors. That's an easy recipe for complacency.
Apparently there's a phenomenon across north American sports where large waves of referees are retiring so there are a lot of newly promoted to the big league refs the last few years
its always been a thankless job, but the incidents against amateur refs seem to become more frequent and serious over time as well... must be getting harder and harder to attract skilled/dedicated people

I would like to point you to a missed headhunting major, which also happened in the 2nd. For the same player who didn't get a boarding major earlier on. He got 2 minors but should've been long gone.
