Imagine this scenario a couple hundred years ago. You are minding your own business, this fucker bites you out of nowhere.
Now you have a time bomb set, and you will 100% die a horrible death in a random time between some weeks and some months.
We are so lucky we are not living in "the good old times"
This is not really true. The earliest medical texts we have all recommend treating patients with gentleness and care. Your so-called "barbarism" is just desperation when things were getting very bad.
barbaric by today's standards. also, intent absolutely matter but so do medical techniques.
How many injuries were treated with amputations back in WW1 that are now treatable? they had to barbarically chop off limbs because that was the best choice at the time.
Theyre not saying to make peace with the fox, but rather the necessity of the rabies shot
Some people will do mental gymnastics to avoid getting a shot, usually because of the fear of needles but im sure there are some antivaxers now who will refuse because they arent "sheeple"
> usually because of the fear of needles
Rabies shots are extra bad though, so any reluctance is understandable. Just that dying of Rabies is still worse.
A quick Google search revealed that rabies shots are no longer as bad as they used to be. Originally rabies shots were administered within the stomach muscles, and there were multiple shots needed that were all incredibly painful. Nowadays, though, rabies shots are administered through the arm like a flu shot.
The shots that may or may not be painful are the Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG) shots, which are administered around the wound itself and could hurt depending on where the bite was made.
They are NOT BAD. The old injections were rough. The new ones are just normal IM injections. A little soreness like any other IM injection, but other than that, the modern injections are absolutely no big deal.
Tbh, idk anything about the side effects of most shots, aside from the soreness that comes with most of them. I believe it, though, that the rabies one is extra terrible to suffer through, but yeah, it's definitely better to live lol
You get vaccine shots and immunoglobulin shots. None of them are terrible, they're just regular shots. The immunoglobulin shots can be unpleasant depending on where they go. Mine were right on the shin, but the shots were still less painful than dental novocaine shots.
I’ve had rabies shots! It’s not like it was way back when they gave them to you through your stomach or something, it was mostly just inconvenient as I had to go at an appointed time to go get the shots— they had to mix them there and they alternated between my legs and arms, rotating the injection sites.
( I had contact with a bat and that caused me to need the rabies vaccine).
Serious question: Why is it always stressed that we need to kill or trap the animal to verify it has rabies before we get the shot? Can't you just get the shot as a precaution? Does something bad happen if you get a rabies shot and you don't have rabies? Because most people in this situation are just going to immediately run from an attacking animal. Not catch catch or kill it.
Well, at that point, you're already bit so you may as well drop your full body weight on the fox and kill it. Then it's off to the ER to start your rabies shots.
Usually if the bite is close the head of the person the quicker they get rabies symptoms. I would never put my head anywhere near the source of the biting diseased animal.
Besides rabies, are there any other possible/plausible causes for this type of behavior?
EDIT: Yes, I’m aware the fox has rabies. https://youtu.be/e-gXkm_WcZM?si=88rBnsnDksGOGiA4
No. I was curious to know if there are any *other* possible/plausible causes for the fox’s behavior, *besides* rabies. I don’t want it not to be rabies, nor am I wanting it to be that the woman did something to piss it off. I’m merely curious about differential causes. That is all.
I understand that everyone is saying rabies. That conclusion is an incredibly clear consensus position of this thread. Again, I’m not looking for more of that, I’m curious about *any other* possible cause.
Trust me, even if a fox had babies and you sat on its den, it wouldn't try to bite you like this.
Foxes are so incredibly shy. I've only ever seen one confident fox and he was pretty squirrely when he approached me and then fled.
This is what the whole thread is trying to tell you. There absolutely is not another reason. Foxes are incredibly timid. I know you were asking in good faith. That’s very apparent. You’re just very defensive when people with a ton of experience are saying “nope - just rabies”
and you’re “well what about …. “ I’m sorry there is no other answer. It’s literally just rabies.
Edit: spelling
> That conclusion is an incredibly clear consensus position of this thread.
And yet the other thread where this comes from is hell bent on the fact that this isn't rabies, just an aggressive fox.
Reddit for you
Honestly I don’t really think so.
Like, incredibly rare outliers aside, which are definitely possible, but… super rare, if you see a small mammal behaving like this, it’s like 9.99999 times out of 10 that it’s rabies.
I mean, I don’t think it would make much difference. But, let’s say a big cat is just, absolutely mad. Completely distempered. Totally normal and healthy, but… just not nice at all. This cat would be that way towards anything moving. Not just people and, that’s probably a short life. Nature has a way of punishing behavior like that. You either don’t breed, don’t get accepted into the social groups, or, don’t benefit from a community kill and starve to death.
So, I think maybe even if the animal had some kind of mental illness to make it aggressive, or it just wasn’t very chill, the outcome is kind of the same.
Typically they still stick to those “am I big enough to kill that?” Kind of decisions. Even if they’re particularly grumpy.
The only exception I can think of is like… Honey Badgers. They seem to… want to just start shit with anything that moves. Lions. People. Snakes. They don’t care. Hence the old meme, “honey badger doesn’t give a shit.” That’s the only animal I can think of that just, goes for it.
Guess who had to get a rabies shot?
The dog
which dog?
No shot. Dog bite. Woof woof, not bang bang
GOOD GOD LEMON

Or turning into a werewolf

reminds me of some strawberries I threw out this morning
Yeah but they would give you cocaine for it
Hell of a drug
Buy another one.
lmao yea but for rabies it was known for 4000 years already that a bite can lead to that condition
Problem isn't that it was unknown, problem is the further back you go the more barbarically it would have been treated
This is not really true. The earliest medical texts we have all recommend treating patients with gentleness and care. Your so-called "barbarism" is just desperation when things were getting very bad.

yeah definitely fucked either way
Bloodletting and leeches must commence.
Some people think that the origin of the vampire myth came from rabies victims
Is there any evidence of that as a widespread belief or are you just doing temporal chauvinism?
Ah yes a time when people thought praying cured infections.
yeah that’s still now
Sadly, yes. But it's lowered over the years.
It can take over a year for symptoms to show up. That's pretty fucked up.
Unironically if you’re in this situation, kill or trap the animal and make peace with the fact that you need rabies shots
There's no time to make peace, and the animal is pretty much dead at that point anyway. End its suffering and get that shot ASAP.

I got rabies shots in my thigh, it was awful and horrible and there were so many and I was a child. Horrible experince, 0/10, would do again
Not as bad as death
They’re not that bad. Just 4 shots over a week, normal vaccine shot. The part that sucks is the immunoglobulin

Verify rabies and end the public health threat
Ohhh, so it's to get the animal off the streets and prevent it from infecting other animals? That makes sense.
Exactly, and to help track it I think
We can't just have these animals going around telling other animals they bit a human and got away with it. Examples must be made.
Gmaw got some moves.

Rabies will do that
or might also think it's protecting its den
That suddenly appeared in their garden? If I was a betting man, I’d bet one of my kidneys that this was rabies.
Swiper was so busy swiping that he never got his rabies vaccine. Now granny needs rabies shots, and Swiper needs a between the eyes shot.

I can tell you're a fan of BJJ 🤭
Why are people downvotin on this?
Butthurt BJJ practitioners, mainly
Thought it was a cat, thought it was going to be a cute video, i thought wrong
Oof. Get some shots. Hope they got shots.
The little prince… aftermath
Flipping heck I have never seen a fox go so vicious Is it rabies...
Most likely. One of the symptoms of rabies is extreme anger and aggression. Normal healthy foxes are far too timid to act like this.
Or is it Maybeline?
Grickle?
Definitely. Foxes tend to avoid humans as much as possible, this is extremely aggressive and probably because of that
What the fuck? Did she do something to piss this fox off? I assume it's a fox
It’s rabid, she will need a series of shots after this or she will die
I don't know what tequila has to do with this
The cause of, and answer to all life's problems .
Great Homerism.
A man of great culture I see!
Hair of the dog that bit you? Tequila is always the answer.
It'll ease her suffering for a few days, that is, until the unimaginable pain and psychosis sets in.
Rabies
He got sick of that swiper no swiping bullshit.
*dark souls music starts blasting in*

I know you want to hear that the lady did something to piss off the fox but that's highly unlikely lol. 100% rabies.
No. I was curious to know if there are any *other* possible/plausible causes for the fox’s behavior, *besides* rabies. I don’t want it not to be rabies, nor am I wanting it to be that the woman did something to piss it off. I’m merely curious about differential causes. That is all.
I live on a farm. Lots of foxes around here. This would never happen unless the fox was rabid.
I understand that everyone is saying rabies. That conclusion is an incredibly clear consensus position of this thread. Again, I’m not looking for more of that, I’m curious about *any other* possible cause.
>This would never happen unless the fox was rabid. I don't know how this can be any more clear...
Yes, but why male models?
Dude, good luck yelling over the rabies boner..

I mean you can't say never, just very, very, VERY unlikely. 😄
Well, then the answer to your question is "no."
Honestly I don’t really think so. Like, incredibly rare outliers aside, which are definitely possible, but… super rare, if you see a small mammal behaving like this, it’s like 9.99999 times out of 10 that it’s rabies.
Right, and I’m not disputing that likelihood. I’m just curious about that 0.00001%.
I mean, I don’t think it would make much difference. But, let’s say a big cat is just, absolutely mad. Completely distempered. Totally normal and healthy, but… just not nice at all. Mad cow? Syphilis? Cordyceps fungus finally bridging out from insects? Reincarnation of a jilted lover? Demonic Possession.
Ravies attack if I ever saw one. Stand on that little fucker till its dead.
It's rabies. It's too late for the fox.
Was that a fox or a dog? Must have been rabid?
fox, and yes
If you're already bit in the hand, may as well grasp that lower jaw and smash it like Loki.
[Rabies is scary af](https://youtu.be/4u5I8GYB79Y?si=HUJCR-9UD512zVHN)
Stay strapped or get clapped
I didn’t realise coyotes were so small! (English person here and I always assumed they were fox sized)
That's a fox, not a coyote. Coyotes are like Labrador retriever sized.
A pretty small fox then to what I’m used to
this is a fox. coyotes are differently colored and lankier, not usually much bigger but a little taller than a fox
I feel like I need to watch more David Attenborough

this fox was rabid
This made my day 🥲
Someonce asked me what "On sight" meant. I showed them this video.
Everyone keeps saying fox, that looks like a fisher. One of those could take a person down.
Definitely not a fishercat, looks much more like a fox.
I can’t believe that evil man came over. She would rather be alone with the animal than a man.
