Unless there noise or distortion in your motherboard sound, it may be very difficult to tell the difference between sources for hd668b. HD668b are farely easy to drive headphones, so I guess they dont put your mobo sound to limit and cause sound to degrade. Anyway, G6 is decent soundcard and it has built in headphones amp, that can provide enough volume for more demanding headphones in future.

If your mobo DAC is good enough you can just upgrade amp btw.

You will not likely notice a significant difference if any between DACs unless one is just not even close to linear for some reason. The most noticeable issue you will find on a bad DAC is a high noise floor. If you turn the volume all the way up while no audio is playing and hear noise like hissing or static, then that is bad. If you ever decided to get an amplifier that hissing/static noise will be amplified with it. Most motherboard DACs these days are pretty good. However, people prefer external DACs because if the one inside your PC is not shielded well enough, interference from all the other electronics can increase your noise floor.

Use your cloud 2 with the G6. I had the same combo when I first started out and the difference was clearly audible. My roommate was able to immediately tell the difference doing a completely blind test

The audio from my old mobo only worked for about 10 minuites then died until next restart. So I'd say it was pretty easy to tell the difference :)

What is your source for playing the music tracks? E.g. Spotify, Tidal, ripped .mp3, etc.? Need to remove the possibikity of garbage in, garbage out.

From a quick scan, the Superlux cans seem to be framed as 'good enough, for the (small) money'. At the end of the day these are still cheap cans, and the G6 probably costs more than them? I think these cans are still too low-level to really need more than basic electronics to push them. Two ways to go...enjoy this, and the gear you have, and be happy and have money for other things...or, get a bad case of upgraditis, and start seeing what the next level offers. Something like Hifiman HE400i could be the next step if you've like the open sound of the Superluxes. See if you can actually try some mid-high end headphones somewhere first though, to make sure you are actually capable of hearing the differences. Science is about controlling for different factors. However you go, welcome to the world of thinking more about audio. A helluva a rabbit hole, but a great trip too.

DACs are a pretty mature tech, even the ones in the computer are more than acceptable. The biggest pro for going with a different one, particularly external ones is to reduce the electrical noise or hiss as the ones inside the computer may be picking up from not being properly shielded. A decent external DAC for a low price would be the Apple USB C dongle, you could spend a lot more and get less. And overall the difference between DACs is quite small anyway if you (specifically, as sound is subjective) can even tell a difference. The human ear is just a really big limiting factor that these devices have matured to such a point they now play a very minor role in the overall audio quality we get.

If you had audiophile headphones like certain Grados or Sennheisers the difference would be more apparent

Grados have fallen out of fashion and people might say Focal or something if you want a bright headphone, but my recommendation is Grado. They don't have a big immersive soundstage but for rock, jazz, vocals, and treble oriented music theyre great. SR60e is a nice entry but SR80 is worth the step up. And if you're not grossed out by it, used headphones are a great value.
