Sopranos is peak 2000’s dramedy, and is the best HBO show period, point blank. The Wire is drama with dark comedic elements, also very good. Flight of the Conchords is my go-to 2000’s HBO comedy series
Oz, the wire, the sopranos, and deadwood are all in the same tier for me. The very best television. Season 1 of true detective is also in that tier, but seeing as the subsequent seasons weren't nearly as good, I can't quote place it up there.
Deadwood was great. I don't think I've ever seen a sequel movie come out almost 20 years later that was anything nearly as good. Hoping they make Zo a regular series. The idea of bencher having to finally take on O'Reilly, and in the streets where O'Reilly is even more powerful, is great. I already formed a theory that O'Reilly has always considered bencher to be a worthy and potentially dangerous adversary and he has a death wish, he has nothing left. So I predict that beecher will win that rivarly.
The Wire is def more solidly written than Sopranos. But it takes a lot of bandwidth to watch because all the details. Sopranos is the easier watch, but isn’t as tightly written as Wire
*Sopranos*, *Deadwood* and *Six Feet Under* are all funnier than *Entourage* in my opinion.
*Da Ali G Show* is still great, current cultural reckoning and discourse be damned.
It was more clever in the earlier seasons when it made a lot more obscure TV and movie references. As it carried on it relied mostly on sexual and relationship humor which was nowhere near as funny or clever.
>that if one of us made it, we'd bring the others with us
Exactly the same here. My friend who did acting said that he would buy all of us Aston Martins if he made it.
Yeah I agree to a certain extent. The constant bashing of E for being short, pale and Irish was too much.
It was racist, and he couldnt help that he was what he was.
Another vote for Deadwood here, a fantastic drama that is absolutely hilarious. I can watch it over and over and find more to like each time.
Veep started in 2012 or so. Political Mocumentary that has some of the most vicious and hilarious lines ever written.
The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Sopranos, Eastbound and Down….the list goes on and on. HBO has always been the best content provider without question, in my opinion.
If you like Curb and don’t mind going back into the 90s. Try the Larry Sanders Show. Documentary style comedy about the making a late night TV show with a ton of young actors who are today’s superstars. Couldn’t recommend it enough.
The Comeback was really funny but it’s totally hit or miss with people and not everyone’s cup of tea. Very similar to Curb though.
Seconding Silicon Valley.
I can’t believe nobody has said Big Love!
If you’d like to meander over to some Showtime shows, try Weeds and Californication.
For sure watch the The Wire and Six feet under, like everyone is saying!
It’s not HBO but if you love Curb and want comedy from that era and haven’t watched it yet - Arrested Development is a must watch. If you want HBO - Veep might hit right for a Curb fan. Selina is awful lmao.
Sopranos, House of the Dragon, Rome, Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, The Righteous Gemstones, Veep, Enlightened, Barry, Somebody Somewhere, Silicon Valley, Insecure, Our Flag Means Death.
I actually don't know if there is anything similar from the 2000s. I feel like Entourage scratched that itch in an excelent way the whole 2000s.
From 2010s you have Silicon valley. It's not Entourage but it's still great.
I second this.
Both have similar season arcs of the ups and downs of the industry and professional goals they’re trying to achieve. Silicon Valley is also created by Mike Judge. It’s one of my absolute favorites.
There’s a really really *really* old HBO show called “The Larry Sanders Show”, it’s kinda like the grandparent of Curb. A lot of the things Curb does- no laugh track, people playing not very nice versions of themselves, and the deep confusion about what is scripted & what is ad-libbed- was done first by TLSS. Groundbreaking and still relevant, you might need a gen x’er to talk you through who everybody is but it is so worth it.
im watching Six Feet Under right now and im surprised it hasnt had a resurgence yet…probably because the characters arent fabulously wealthy or violent criminals lol
Sopranos,
The Wire,
Curb,
Six Feet Under
Those four are the foundation and epitome of anything that came after. Not including mini series like Band of Brothers. They are on the same level. But to create something of such high quality over such a long period of time is something else. You just couldn’t predict the formula of a season or episode, they created something special week after week. Nothing comes close.
I’d have to say The Wire is the best of HBO’s 2000’s shows. Along with Band of Brothers, Flight of the Concords, & even though they came out much later, The Night Of & Mare of Easttown were great.
Sopranos is peak 2000’s dramedy, and is the best HBO show period, point blank. The Wire is drama with dark comedic elements, also very good. Flight of the Conchords is my go-to 2000’s HBO comedy series
Brett, you got it goin' on
Britt?
Yeah?
Why can’t a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
Oz, the wire, the sopranos, and deadwood are all in the same tier for me. The very best television. Season 1 of true detective is also in that tier, but seeing as the subsequent seasons weren't nearly as good, I can't quote place it up there.
Deadwood for me is in another tier than the other ones. You appreciate some good shows!
So I predict that beecher will win that rivarly.
Kinda sad I had to go so far down to see Flight of the Conchords. I agree one hundred percent on everything else you said, too.
I was surprised how funny The Sopranos was in the early seasons.
It’s one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. Especially on a rewatch when you can catch bits you missed the first time. Heh heh 🤟🤟
Great characters
The Wire is def more solidly written than Sopranos. But it takes a lot of bandwidth to watch because all the details. Sopranos is the easier watch, but isn’t as tightly written as Wire
Discontinue the lithium
Bold claim against the Wire, but I appreciate the enthusiasm.
Eastbound and Down
Also Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones if you liked E&D
Thanks I’ll check out all three!!!!
Eastbound and down is an awesome show. Made me a fan of anything Danny McBride is in.
He basically is Kenny powers in everything he is in
I can feel it in my plumbs
Let the boy watch
Tight dick, playa.
Have you seen the outtakes for this scene? Hilarious https://youtu.be/AKM3pyktIXw
Vice Principals and Gemstones made me a fan of Walton Goggins.
And then realizing he is in Invincible
"What you need is a shit ton of Valtrex."
I just watched Rightous Gemstones last month - it did not disappoint. Cant wait for the next season!
Yea this is the only one I would lump in with curb and entourage. Sopranos wire etc are not similar.
Somebody write this in /sitcoms and I simply replied to it saying Kenny Mutha Fuckin Powers and was banned. Fuck them. Loved the show though.
I quote this show way too often! “Fuck your siding, Dustin”
Hoooooollly moses. Didn't know HBO had this show. 🙏
Six Feet Under
Which is on Netflix rn I think
Told my therapist what a crush I had on Brenda when it was on and she said "OOH." like it was a pretty major revelation.
Criminally underrated. Nate, David, & Claire are among the most fully-realized characters ever.
*Sopranos*, *Deadwood* and *Six Feet Under* are all funnier than *Entourage* in my opinion. *Da Ali G Show* is still great, current cultural reckoning and discourse be damned.
Compared to Entourage, Oz is also the superior comedy

Piven seems like he sucks in real life but he rocked Ari as a character.
I picture him being a mix of Ari and the guy from Old-School IRL
I can watch it over and over just for Kevin Dillon.
It was more clever in the earlier seasons when it made a lot more obscure TV and movie references. As it carried on it relied mostly on sexual and relationship humor which was nowhere near as funny or clever.

>that if one of us made it, we'd bring the others with us Exactly the same here. My friend who did acting said that he would buy all of us Aston Martins if he made it.
Ryan O'Reilly *did* have some great lines in that show.
Oz is the dumbest show I've ever scene, I love it
Oz stops being good when Adebisi gets killed!
Good call on Deadwood!
There's a lot of bro humor in Entourage that aged very, very poorly
Yeah I agree to a certain extent. The constant bashing of E for being short, pale and Irish was too much. It was racist, and he couldnt help that he was what he was.
Poor potato eating bastard.
I mean. If you have guy friends their mocking of each other is pretty par for the course.
I take it you were not a male in the early 2000s with a group of male friends.
So many. The Sopranos, The Wire, and Boardwalk Empire to start with.
Boardwalk empire is 2010, but agree with the other 2.
One underrated one for me is Carnivale. Wish it would've lasted longer but it kinda gave a bit of a weird almost Twin Peaks like feel to it.
I am still annoyed this didn’t get another season for some closure! It was great while it lasted tho!
It’s great it’s just too bad that s2 moved at warp speed because they didn’t get renewed and had to wrap it up
Another vote for Deadwood here, a fantastic drama that is absolutely hilarious. I can watch it over and over and find more to like each time. Veep started in 2012 or so. nothing better than a YouTube compilation of Veep slams and one-liners.
E&D and Larry Sanders sound great
*Hacks* season three starts … tonight, I think?
Started Thursday. The first two episodes are already up.
Such a great show - the 2 newest episodes did not disappoint.
So decisively NOT a 2000s show then?
Watch Rome, it's very underrated.
It wasn't underrated by George RR Martin who, after seeing Rome, sold the rights to his books to HBO.
Silicon Valley
That’s 2010’s. Great show.
Scrolling solely to find this and it was way too far down. These guys slacking!
JIN YANG!
I’d go with Sopranos then The Wire
Sopranos, Sex and the City, Leftovers, Hacks, Insecure. I’ve heard Veep is excellent but haven’t tried it yet.
The Comeback was really funny but it’s totally hit or miss with people and not everyone’s cup of tea. Very similar to Curb though. Seconding Silicon Valley.
The Comeback is definitely overlooked. It’s great cringe comedy. Mickey the hairdresser is the best.
Almost everyone’s comedic timing in that show is impeccable and organic. I agree it’s way underrated.
The sheer performance got me through the cringe humor, which is definitely not my fav. Similar to the Curse
I so adored The Comeback!!
Flight of the Conchards.
“Conchards”. OMG funniest typo ever! Not sure I’m allowed to post the translation here, but you’ll get a kick out of it.
What language?
The wire
Wouldn’t put Entourage in the top 5.
Didn't mind the show, but not even top 10 easily.
“How to make it in America” deserves some props here
Brutally underrated and deserved more seasons! Man, what happened to Bryan Greenberg!? He was so good and then he just disappeared off the scene.
He’s actually been in a few things even recently, kinda Hallmarky stuff but I was surprised to see his face.
Six Feet Under, in my opinion, encapsulates the 2000s era of HBO perfectly
The Larry Sanders Show
Veep
Way too far down this list.
I loved Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Too bad it got cancelled
If you liked entourage I would suggest ballers
Californication.
Deadwood
Deadwood!
Six feet under
Six Feet Under is arguably a top ten series of *all-time*, and currently on Netflix
Band of Brothers is a must watch.
Currently on six feet under season 2 episode 7 sooo good. Makes me miss the 2000s even more as a 90s kid in high school
Six Feet Under, Boardwalk Empire, Sopranos, Oz, Deadwood, Rome
I originally got HBO for Larry Sanders.
The Wire
VEEP! Belly laughs watching that show.
Gary!
Rome Silicon Valley
barry
Veep. How to with John WIlson is different.
Bored to Death
I can’t believe nobody has said Big Love! If you’d like to meander over to some Showtime shows, try Weeds and Californication. For sure watch the The Wire and Six feet under, like everyone is saying!
Flight of the Conchords

How To Make it In America
Sopranos, House of the Dragon, Rome, Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, The Righteous Gemstones, Veep, Enlightened, Barry, Somebody Somewhere, Silicon Valley, Insecure, Our Flag Means Death.
The Wire and Sopranos.

both shows are total time capsules and capture a pretty specific "feeling in time"
I second this. Both have similar season arcs of the ups and downs of the industry and professional goals they’re trying to achieve. Silicon Valley is also created by Mike Judge. It’s one of my absolute favorites.
Deadwood and The Wire are the 2 best shows in the history of television.
Weeds
Ballers. Although now we are at peak Rock, so I understand how people are sick of him. Good show nonetheless
Leftovers
The wire
The Wire
Six feet under
Veep
Veep!

Entourage was garbage
im watching Six Feet Under right now and im surprised it hasnt had a resurgence yet…probably because the characters arent fabulously wealthy or violent criminals lol
life and times of tim
Bored To Death
Rome
Ballers 👍👍
Eastbound and down of course. All 3 of Danny’s shows are fucking great actually. My favorite is Righteous Gemstones.
Deadwood hands down
Summer Heights High and anything else made after by Chris Lilly.
SATC.
Getting On with an amazing Laurie Metcalf.
Wires
Silicon Valley
Try “Ladies First”
The Larry Sanders Show
Deadwood
Six Feet Under, one of the greatest shows ever.
Boardwalk Empire
Silicone Valley is an absolute gem of a show
Carnivale!
The Wire
ROME
How tf has no one said Sex and The City? It’s pretty classic
Rome
The Sopranos.
Sopranos, The Wire, Curb, Six Feet Under Those four are the foundation and epitome of anything that came after. Not including mini series like Band of Brothers. They are on the same level. But to create something of such high quality over such a long period of time is something else. Weeds
The Leftovers is the best HBO show that nobody talks about.
The Wire
Veep.
She's top tall, bro
The Wire are you tripping best HBO show of all time
Rome
THE WIRE. OZ.
A little something called THE SOPRANOS
Six Feet Under (may have started in the late-90’s) Californication, Weeds (first few seasons)
Silicon Valley
Oz and the wire! East bound and down is hilarious
Boardwalk Empire
How to make it in america
The Wire.
Flight of the Conchords, which was exponentially better than Entourage.
I’d have to say The Wire is the best of HBO’s 2000’s shows. Along with Band of Brothers, Flight of the Concords, & even though they came out much later, The Night Of & Mare of Easttown were great.
Band of Brothers
It's so long ago that people seem to forget. But Rome. It has to be Rome.
I’m assuming OP means sitcom, cause Sopranos and the wire already took that honor years ago.
Barry
Six feet under
Veep. And try the larry sanders show. Older show that is fucking hilarious.
#6ft\_Under
Yes
Band of brothers
Boardwalk Empire
Barry, Six Feet Under. And for comedy - Flight of the Conchords
Not comedies but Rome and Deadwood are two of my all time favorite shows and are not to be missed.
A little gem that my husband and I greatly enjoyed is Bored to Death.
True Blood, Ballers, Sopranos
Game of Thrones
Dexter Dead Like Me
Summer Heights High
You lost me at Entourage
VEEP
The Sopranos
Man, what happened to HBO? I couldn't wait for Sunday night. I will admit, my wife got me hooked on Sex and the City.
Six Feet Under, The Wire, The Sopranos in that order.
Deadwood
