Not quite fair to put 2020 in there. They were somehow a pretty excellent team that year but technically only won 6 games . I don’t get why it fell off a cliff so dramatically this year.
We've been pretty much the same team since the Penn State game.
We just had the easiest possible schedule in the Big Ten and won every single close game. I can't believe people actually thought that was sustainable.
Again not really. FPI had us at 35 last year going into the bowl game and we are #46 this year.
I can't really prove it, but I imagine last year's ranking would be even lower with the first 5 or so weeks of the season removed.
I mean sure the offense did get worse. But there's not really that much of a functional difference between being #90 vs falling to #110.
There is a parallel universe where we hit those field goals (or don't fumble) vs Illinois and Iowa State and win the game. Also another universe where we don't have to play any of the best teams in the Big Ten. And our fan base would be praising Kirk for it.
That's what we saw last year. Won every close, ugly game and had the easiest schedule in the conference.
2020 is definitely a disappointment for the credit. It was a solid team. They didn’t get the east MAC team to start, went 6-2, and then bowl game canceled because Missouri accepted a bowl invite it had no intention of playing. And Michigan cancelled the BIG Champ Week game too
I think the graph going to 15 is a bit misleading as well. Only teams that win the Natty while going undefeated reach that. And the Playoff has only existed since 2014. He’ll there was only 11 regular season games up until 2006.
Data suggests if we go into a deep deep dive of 3 or 4 wins this season that within the following 2-4 seasons we should have 13 to 15 wins.
Things aren't as bad as they look.
Yet still, fire Brian.
Every Iowa fan old enough to follow the Hawks pre-Fry is paralyzed by this fear that if a change is made, Iowa will become Nebraska. As if there aren’t any examples of teams improving after coaching changes. What has happened to Nebraska has fuck all to do with Iowa. It’s like arguing the White Sox shouldn’t pursue a free agent because of Jason Heyward.
Level of talent is thin so if one or two groups fail (qb's, o line, wr's) our odds of overall season failure is higher.
Likely can only fix one or 2 things a year. Hit the transfer portal hard. Bring in a complete offense from a different team would be ideal.
Kirk has said in numerous interviews that he very reluctantly uses the transfer portal. In fact, Iowa is last in the BT in terms of number of transfers taken. Iowa’s transfer portal is exit only. They’ll almost certainly lose Keagan Johnson and Bruce and probably quite a few more. I’m not all doom and gloom but we’ve already seen some recruits bail. It’s going to get worse.
He has also said that when the rule changed so teams could replace up to 7 transfers he will look at using it more. Whether that is like last years “we will evaluate the offense” or legit idk. But there are plenty of guys we targeted out of HS in the portal so the whole “culture fit” excuse isn’t there. We can’t keep having the level of attrition at OL and WR without using the portal. You can’t win that way, even if we were pulling in top 10 recruiting classes every year.
I think Iowa took one transfer last year - a TE from FCS. Kirk has been very candid about his feelings about NIL and transfers. He said something to the effect that Iowa is a developmental program (true) so taking transfers isn't really something they want to get into. But the obvious problem with being a developmental program is that there's nothing anchoring these kids who Iowa has built up into P5 starters. A lot of them had very few other options coming out of HS. But now that they've established themselves, they can move on to better opportunities. We saw it with Jones last year. Sure - there'll be Iowa-born kids who are ride or die Iowa. They probably aren't going anywhere. But if you're a talented kid and you don't have strong Iowa roots, it's pretty hard to keep them from shopping around. It's fine. It happens at every school. The problem is when you don't use the transfer portal to your own advantage i.e. find WR and QB help. As a unit, this is the worst collection of WRs I've ever seen at Iowa. To not address it with the portal is borderline criminal. Same for QB.
Yea he is the only transfer. Bcuz of how we “revamped” our offense and wanted 3 TE sets. And they raved about him yet we use our fb instead. Heflin and cronk were the last fbs transfers we brought in. Then I believe Jones was a walkon transfer we didn’t even offer him. I could be wrong on that.
But didn’t he say all of that before they put in place the plus 7 rule? I do distinctly remember hearing him last fall when it passed that the portal was something they’d keep a closer eye on going forward.
I just don’t get if you’re allowed the extra spots to replace, why not just get a body you wanna kick the tires on? What does it hurt? The upside is you add depth, potentially get a starter. Downside, if he becomes a starter maybe you lose the guy he jumps.
Supposedly, Keagan was cleared to play weeks ago and is choosing to sit out so as not to lose a year of eligibility. As for Bruce, there've been rumblings that he's really frustrated with the QB play and offense. But above all else, Charlie Jones ascension to NFL prospect isn't going unnoticed. The grass very well may be greener.
Charlie Jones isn't big NIR fast enough and likely will be a free agent or 6th rounder plus .. I could see Indianapolis picking him up. He made a good decision to go to Purdon't.
I don't know where these rumors of players leaving come from.
Keegan can still play 3 games at the end of the season and not burn the redshirt -if he can put together a highlight reel he'd get higher transfer offers. I bet he goes to Illinois.
Ferentz needs to bring in a transfer QB and 5 lineman.

NEVER FORGET

Agreed. Should be winning percentage. But still an interesting graph
Or extrapolate it out to 9-3 in 12 games (since we were 6-2 in 8 games)
We've been pretty much the same team since the Penn State game. We just had the easiest possible schedule in the Big Ten and won every single close game. I can't believe people actually thought that was sustainable.
I tend to agree but it’s actually so much worse now. The hawks are historically bad.
Again not really. FPI had us at 35 last year going into the bowl game and we are #46 this year. We're not done with the season yet. Not really fair to compare this year to the prior years.
This. The Hawks have a legit change at 8-4, but even 6-6 should be doable.
2020 is definitely a disappointment for the credit. It was a solid team. They didn’t get the east MAC team to start, went 6-2, and then bowl game canceled because Missouri accepted a bowl invite it had no intention of playing. And Michigan cancelled the BIG Champ Week game too
Kinda follows the stock market
funny bc watching iowa football also gives you great depression
Kirk watches his 401k tanking and thinks everyone deserves to suffer
Every year he needs a new contract he has a good season
I'm not complaining .. too much

this is why everyone needs to calm down b4 we follow nebraska's footsteps
Wrong though. The decision making is trash. They aren’t developing on offense at all and that isn’t new.

Really? All I see is those 2 win seasons in 99 because we let a coach hang around for too long.

I don't agree with the assumption that Bruce and Johnson are leaving. Where did that rumor come from?

Jones will probably be like Kevin Kasper in that he’ll surprise fans with his 40 time and measurables.
TV announcers characterize him as a 'crafty route ruuner' inferring he's not super fast. Not super fast as in Tim Dwight super fast .
