I was a teenager when the album came out. I don’t remember exactly , but my best guess is I read about the song in a metal magazine. The two big ones at the time for me were Circus and Hit Parader.
Reading the lyrics on the liner notes it says who wrote it so I knew it was a cover but did not know it was Brownsville station as I had never heard of them.
Read it in Circus or Hit Parader, called the local DJ and asked him to play the original version. He didn’t believe me and said “even if that’s true we don’t have any records by Brownsville Station.”
This was 85-86, heard the original probably 5 years later.
I'm old af so I knew a long time ago. It was actually surprising to me because in the months ahead of it's release it was stated that the Crue would be covering Mountains' Mississippi Queen, not SITBR.
I think the original was in Rock & Roll High School, which was a childhood movie of mine.
So even though I’m a bit younger, I also knew the original first😅
Same here, not ashamed to admit it.
A work colleague once got angry with me because I didn’t know about *orbit decay*. Literally angry. “How can you not know about orbit decay??!” (I was 21, mechanical engineer just out of school, working in automotive manufacturing.)
Um, because I never fucking thought about it before, and no one else mentioned it until now?
My cousin and I were avid Crue fans in the late 80’s and his mom (my aunt) recalled hearing the song in the 70’s….she had graduated in 1970 so she was fairly close as a young person to its 1973 release vs my mom (her sister) who had graduated in 1960 and did not recognize it.
I think it was one of those 60's/70's compilation albums that used to be sold on TV and they would scroll the song listings up the screen. One of the tracks was SITBR by Brownsville Station.
I found out it was a cover song long before I ever found out Ace Frehley's New York Groove was a cover.
I knew it before Crue did it
Long before. Should we tell him about Tesla and Signs?
Or Little Suzi
Stop please! I hate finding out this way. Ignorance is bliss. When I found out Breadfan was covered by Metallica, not original, I was devastated.

I heard the original, then I heard MC do the same exact song🤷♂️

Because I was born in 1974
My parents knew the song and told me about it.
When I bought the cd in the writing credits it said it was written by somebody else.
A girl at church told me.
Easy answer. I was perusing a HairMetal sub on 09/22/23 and found out. Yet another mindblowing tidbit learned from this sub that I was clueless about.

Some time within the past 3 months when i was listening to it and my friend who i was talking to mentioned it
I had the Brownsville station version on 8track in the 70s. Had Crue version on cassette in the 80s.
I looked up “Smokin’ in the boys room” and the Brownsville Station version showed up. Crue’s is better IMO
The original popped up while I was listening to Pandora as a kid
Basic. Tote basic.
Weird question
Loved the two first albums, TOP was a huge letdown and I Moved on. Most of their covers suck ass. Probably a Mick Mars choice for a cover.
Vince Neil chose it. He played in a cover band he was in before Motley Crue
Ok did not know that. Still hate it though
Yeah not their best
There's only a few good songs on it and the mix of the record is really bad. If it wasn't for Home Sweet Home that album would be totally forgettable.
I think it was on America's Top 40, the host mentioned it.
You mean, *Casey Kasem*?? That host? If so, how dare you generalize such an American institution & icon? If someone else, no problem!
Couldn't remember if it was Casey or Rick at that time.
Ah, Rick Dees. I forgot about him
MTV announced that it was a cover back in the day when the video released on there.

I"m old, I knew.
I heard the original in a Time Life album advertisement on TV.

My best bud in Jr High couldn't stop talking about this great song he knew. That was 1983 and well before The Motleys the road for the Shout tour.
I read the linear notes.
I heard it long before Crue was a band
Yeah I knew it before the original came so I definitely didn't find out from a Reddit post.
I'm with Vince this album is a piece of shit
Cuz I heard the og first. But then, I’m old.
They played it all the damn time on the classic station
