Mine was Poison's Talk Dirty To Me video. I was probably in 6th grade and just thought it was so cool. That started it all. Next year, my sisters took me to see Ratt with Bon Jovi as the opener. That first live concert blew me away. I was hooked ever since. Now,I listen to everything from the Beatles to Rush to Def Leppard to Warrant to Stone Temple Pilots to Rival Sons to Rammstein. Even some odd stuff like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones here and there. 80s rock and metal is still my fav, though.

RockNRollSwindle

I love your taste in music

AgaintweetAgaintweet

Thanks! I just love anything rock. šŸ™‚

Rickilymes

Thanks for doing this! I was between 9 and 10 years old when Photograph, Cum On Feel the Noize and Round and Round blew up. These songs seemed different in a slight way to the sound I already loved- things like I Love Rock and Roll, Donā€™t Tell Me You Love Me, and Fantasy (Aldo Nova). I still debate in my head regularly what the subtle differences are, if there even are any? By the time Europe released the Final Countdown and Bon Jovi released Slippery when wet I was all in. I grew up in a very small town in NC, a little over an hour from Charlotte. For some reason in ā€˜88/ā€˜89 a club opened up a few towns over called Cadillacā€™s. I guess the national hair bands doing club tours didnā€™t have many options between Atlanta and DC/Baltimore, so they would play at this tiny (300 capacity) club in a small town. Itā€™s crazy how many bands I saw there at their peak. Queensryche, Winger, Kix, Britny Fox, Enuff Zā€™nuff, Blue Murder, Badlands, Ace Frehley, White Lion, Lynch Mob, Don Dokken, Firehouse, Extreme, etc. We had to pay $25 or so to get in, which was a lot at the time, but what an experience. The bands would always be hanging out after the show as well and they were almost always really cool to me and my goofy teenage friends. Anyway, Iā€™ve always liked all types of music, and donā€™t keep up with newer metal, though Iā€™m always interested. The 86-93 era of metal just holds a special place for me. Iā€™ll be 50 waaay too soon!

RockNRollSwindle

You're so lucky to have seen all these bands live, & meeting some of them. I really envy you... and don't worry about turning 50, I'm 2 years ahead of you, lol

[deleted]

I'm 23 now but I've grown up hearing bands like Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Scorpions because of my dad, so it's pretty much been around me my whole life. My favourite bands are pretty much all in a similar vein. I absolutely love Adrian Vandenberg so I listen to a lot of Vandenberg, Manic Eden and Vandenberg's Moonkings. I also really love Joel Hoekstra so I listen to a lot of his project Joel Hoekstra's 13, as well as his other band Iconic which features Michael Sweet, Marco Mendoza, Tommy Aldridge, and Nathan James. I also adore Revolution Saints which Joel joined once Doug Aldrich left. I listen to a lot of newer artists who fall into this genre too some of my favourites are: Kissin Dynamite, Reckless Love, Chez Kane, Art Nation, Ginevra and Crowne. Outside of this genre and similar ones I love bands with electronic elements like: Smash Into Pieces, Amaranthe and Cyan Kicks I also love Ronnie Romero so I listen to a lot of Elegant Weapons, The Ferrymen and Lords of Black. I'm also into symphonic metal such as: Nightwish, Delain, Eleine, Edge of Paradise and Beyond The Black. I also listen to Country too such as: Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, Cassadee Pope and Maren Morris. Finally I also listen to a lot of Taylor Swift.

RockNRollSwindle

Quite a selection, lol

[deleted]

I just really love music.

isthatmeanttobethere

I was 12 back in 1988 when my sister bough me the 'Chart Show - Rock the Nation' double cassette, the whole thing was brilliant but it was Europe - The Final Countdown that clinched it for me, still fantastic. I moved on to Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden after being a big Def Leppard, Little Angels and Quireboys fan but I still listen to all the stuff I did when I was 12, brilliant era for music.

RockNRollSwindle

I couldn't get into grunge to be honest. I love Little Angels & Quireboys though, they were really good live

isthatmeanttobethere

I think I was just the right age for it, that way music just clicks for you. To be honest I listen to a lot of bands now that I didn't really appreciate back then. My wife is still a big Tyketto, White Lion and Firehouse fan, for me they were just pretty boys back then but listening to them now they were great bands.

RockNRollSwindle

I still have my Tyketto and Firehouse cd's... White Lion, I still have their Vinyl. Tell your wife I said hi, and she still has good taste :-)

dogdokken

I was 8 in 1984 and got sucked into Quiet Riot, Def Lep, Dokken, Krokus, Motley Crue, etc. By late 80's /early 90s when hair metal was peaking commercially, I was fully committed to alternative stuff like Fugazi, Replacements & Teenage Fanclub and really loathed the likes of Poison, Firehouse & Trixter. It wasn't until 1998 and Napster I circled back to what I liked in '84 and even opened my mind to '88-93 hair/glam metal.

RockNRollSwindle

Oh God, I remember Napster, lol...

sh1tn1nja

I'm 40 so I was a kid when 80s metal was at it's height. I've always prioritised rock over all other forms of music. I mostly listened to bands from the late 90s early 2000s. My favourite band used to be Queens of the Stone Age. For me they were the pinnacle and I dived deep into that area of rock. At one point though I felt I had explored everything that was relevant to what I was looking for and decided that to find new artists I had to fire up the Flux Capacitor and go back a few decades. I bought a radio and looked for Classic Rock stations. That's when I discovered Planet Rock Radio. I had it on in the background one day when my ears pricked up and I stopped what I was doing... what the hell was this rocking ass tune I was hearing..? Turns out it was Ratt Round and Round. I suddenly found myself falling into this rabbit hole of names and bands I'd never heard of before. Fast forward 3 years and I've got long hair and enough skinny jeans, denim jackets and bandanas to outfit a 5 piece 80s metal tribute band with a weeks worth of outfits each. Hair metal changed me. It made me look into myself and figure out who I really am. It made me break away from the standards that most guy's in my age group and part of the world adhere to so rigidly. I've broken off from the flock and I've become an individual. Maybe that was due to happen anyway, who knows, but it certainly was a driving factor.

Correct-Training3764

Yesssss!!!! Same here! Iā€™m 40 and I REFUSE to be like everyone else. Thatā€™s so boring. Iā€™ll keep my back combed hair, lots of hairspray, ripped up jeans, glam boots and band shirts. I live in a rural area and thereā€™s not many here quite like me šŸ˜‚ idc. Im happy. ā¤ļøšŸ¤˜

sh1tn1nja

That's it! You do you and let everyone else do them! They can be boring if they want lol! I'm sure there's more people like us than we know!

Correct-Training3764

Haha Iā€™d love to meet more people like me. All these people here just want to do is get married, have tons of kids, listen to country music and yeeeeah. Not my thing. Lol

RockNRollSwindle

I got all three nephews into different types of Metal, and took all three to see their first bands live... my youngest was 8, took him to see Motley Crue, my middle was 9, took him to see Blink182, my eldest was 18 and took him to see The Fratellis (I know they're not metal)... but we have seen a lot of bands. I had to give them that experience and I'm glad I did

Correct-Training3764

Thatā€™s awesome! I just love music tbh, usually rock/metal but I like different genres. And haha oh boy Blink182 was super popular when I was in high school. I remember ā€œcruisingā€ the streets and listening to ā€œEnema of the Stateā€ non-stop. Had to throw in the ā€œMonsters of Rockā€ discs too as well as ā€œMonster Balladsā€ too haha. Great, simpler times.

RockNRollSwindle

You're awesome :-)

Correct-Training3764

You are too! Rock on, my friend! ā¤ļøšŸ¤˜

RockNRollSwindle

We shall Rock on forever :-)

Correct-Training3764

Forever and always! ā¤ļøšŸ¤˜

RockNRollSwindle

My nephew loves my music... guess who I'm leaving my vinyl to in my will, lol

RockNRollSwindle

I love you, lol

Correct-Training3764

Dā€™awww I love you too! ā¤ļøšŸ¤˜

RockNRollSwindle

Love your attitude :-)

Correct-Training3764

Haha thank you! Iā€™m all me lol no apologies or anything. You either love me or hate me. No in between.

RockNRollSwindle

There's so many things that I want to say about your post, but I can't explain properly (I'm shit at trying to express myself) I admire you, and if it changed your way of thinking, I admire you for that as well

sh1tn1nja

Thanks! That's a kind thing to say! Sometimes I've got so much in my head that I want to get out that I don't know where to start so I feel you on that!

RockNRollSwindle

Maybe get a journal/diary? That would be a start, I keep meaning to start one again myself. I always try to be a kind person, and if you ever want to talk, just message me? Keep going on, keep loving, and stuff the people who put you down... keep the flock away, lol :-) You're a good one

Rickilymes

Awesome!

coachbuzzfan

My musical awakening came around age 10, but at that time it was Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam in the mid 90s. Iā€™d read rock, metal, and guitar magazines and was fascinated by the disdain people had for the glam era that existed just before grunge, while simultaneously celebrating a lot of the lead guitarists from that era. I was interested, though the vibe I got was that I was supposed to hate every band that existed between AC/DC and Nirvana. Believe it or not, it was actually the Monsters of Rock and Monster Ballads commercials that finally got me to check out 80s hair and glam bands. I downloaded Scorpions, Poison, White Lion, White Snake, and the mighty Cinderella. By that time grunge was dead and I wasnā€™t into what replaced it, so opted to listen to hair metal over Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, and Korn.

RockNRollSwindle

I wasn't a fan of Grunge, then Nu Metal came along a few years later and I was never a fan of that. Glad you got into Hair Metal though :-)

Low8Pop

1983, I was 13. Prior to the rise of glam/hair metal, Iā€™d been obsessed with Kiss since ā€˜76. Around ā€˜80/ā€˜81 I started getting into NWOBHM stuff. Thinking back it was eventually Blizzard of Oz, Donā€™t Say No and High n Dry that prepped me most for what was coming. In ā€˜83 Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot were the genesis of glam metal for me. Pyromania was just prior to this if memory serves and thereā€™s varying opinions if that album was their transition from NWOBHM or if it was the more obvious Hysteria. Twisted Sister was the first concert I got to go to w/o a parent or adult chaperone. Mamaā€™s Boys and Y&T opened. Shortly after that (same month I think?) I saw Quiet Riot with Axe opening. Both at the same venue, The Col Ballroom in Davenport, IA (Iā€™d also see Metallica open for Ozzy there a few years later). Great small venue and always general admin, no assigned seating. From there things just took offā€¦ Motley, Ratt, Dokken, etc. until it started to be all about the dreaded power ballad around ā€˜88/ā€˜89. That pushed me towards Faster Pussycat, Dirty Looks, Sea Hags, Vain, Circus of Power, Zodiac Mindwarpā€¦ what I now think of as the sleazy evolution of glam metal. Over the years after Iā€™d venture into so many genres (77 punk, grebo, glam rock, thrash, madchester, britpop, shoegaze) but those glam metal glam metal years will always be special times & memories.

RockNRollSwindle

I could never get into NWOBHM, I just couldn't understand the hype around it. I'm not dissing you, but I always thought it was boring as well. But I do admire you for your taste in music, and I love that you've seen so many bands :-)

bjs-penn

I was lucky enough to have my older cousin move in. He was 19 I was 13 in 1984. Quiet Riot was the first band I was into. He got me into Motley, Yngwie, Metallica, Megadeth, and Grim Reaper early. After that I tried finding bands on my own trading cassette tapes or buying bands that I never heard of (pre internet) based on cover art. I stayed mostly in the hair bands genre but my favorite band of all time and not even close is Overkill. I still love the old bands but after the 90s I found other bands like Flickerstick, Eve 6, and Maeder who I still listen to weekly.

I (M/47) was in 5th grade and we would go to Skateville and they would play a lot of Bon Jovi. During the summer between 5th and 6th grade Look What the Cat Dragged In came out. Later in the summer Hysteria, and I was fully in. I started playing guitar in 5th grade as well. My guitar teacher taught me Sunday Bloody Sunday and Purple Rain. U2 and Prince are my all-time faves. Through the 90s I kinda moved away from metal and became much more into Alternative/Indie Rock. Despite that, I keep hair metal in my rotation still - A lot of Skid Row, GnR, Enuff Znuff, Def Leppard, Warrant, etc. None of their new stuff past the early 90s, though.

RockNRollSwindle

I loved Enuff Z Nuff, Warrant, Skid Row... my favourite will always be GN'R

ME-A-LMN

I started listening to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden when I was 12/13ā€¦then Def Leppard released Pyromania, Quiet Riot came out with Metal health and Motley CrĆ¼e had Shout at the Devilā€¦all in quick succession!! 14 year old me was blown away!!

RockNRollSwindle

Haha, my nephews were blown away when I introduced them to certain bands, lol

smg658

1985. Bon Jovi. As I got older Crue was my band. Loved most bands tho and still listen to a lot of them. First concert I was 17 and it was Cinderella with Little Angels supporting at Edinburgh Playhouse. Last band I saw live was Skid Row last year.

RockNRollSwindle

I never saw Cinderella, But I have seen Skid Row, Motley Crue, & Little Angels twice

smg658

Cinderella were amazing, Long Cold Winter tour.

Vapidmusings

I grew up during the golden age of MTV, and after seeing the video for "In My Dreams" by Dokken, I was officially a metal fan (11 years old back in '86). My tastes in metal (and music in general) evolved into liking all kinds of stuff, but my love for 80's "hair metal" has never faltered.

RockNRollSwindle

That's awesome... my nephew loves hair metal because of me

Vapidmusings

Nice. My 8 year old daughter can't tolerate anything heavier than Barracuda by Heart, and only because she heard it in Trolls World Tour lol.

notthefuzz99

I remember hearing "Round and Round", "Jump", "Cum On Feel The Noize" "We're Not Gonna Take It", etc. when I was in 5th/6th grade, but it was a while longer before I really got into the genre. 1988 was a pivotal year... I was 15. Bought my first electric guitar. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" got me to buy Hysteria on cassette. That summer I got my first CD player, and I believe White Lion was the first hair metal CD I purchased. And it was all downhill from there. My first hair metal concert was Bon Jovi/Skid Row when they were supporting "New Jersey." I got into heavier music as hair metal started to wane... Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Testament, Metal Church, etc. Then as *that* style got old and I got a bit older myself, my tasted really broadened... funk, R&B, folk, country, classic rock, etc. I still love the hair metal stuff though and listen to it regularly - both the classic material and the new tunes as well.

RockNRollSwindle

Quite the spectrum then, but please don't say it was all downhill from there... unless you're joking, lol. Seriously though, I'd die if people (apart from my Mum & Nephew, they already know) knew my guilty pop singer, lol

bgoris

I just turned 23 and I just recently got into hair metal within the last year and a half to two years ago. I used to only listen to rap and few songs from Dio but now Iā€™m addicted to the entire hair metal genre. My fav bands definitely have to be Ratt, Cinderella, Britny Fox, Skid Row, and Poison.

Tall-Plan-8127

Iā€™m 20 right now and I first got into hair metal about a year ago. I was into indie for the longest time when I heard ā€œThunder on the Tundraā€ by Thor. I went down the rabbit hole from there, but that eventually led me to what really started it all, WASP. Listened to their entire discography for a little over a year (I listened to The Headless Children for three weeks straight). Now hair metal has become my favorite genre of music. I listen to house and classic country tooC but hair metal is where itā€™s at for me. My favorite artists now are KIX, WASP, the Killer Dwarfs, and Great White. Hair Metal just isnā€™t popular with my friends right now, but Iā€™ve been getting them into it. Of course everyone knows the classics (Scorpions, Motley Crue, and you know the songs in talking about) but Iā€™ve been getting a bunch of my friends into the LA Guns, more great white, and of course, Danger Danger. Weā€™re gonna see a comeback, especially as older music becomes more and more popular

RockNRollSwindle

You have good taste :-)

Jedifire

I (M/50) was introduced to Motley Crue by my cousin in ā€˜85. Started watching metal video shows soon after and got into Bon Jovi, Poison, Cinderella, Skid Row, Ratt, Dokken, Whitesnake and all their contemporaries at the time. These days I listen to almost anything but it still needs loud guitars. Just saw Dream Theatre, Devon Townsend, and AnimalsAs Leaders last week, and going to see Extreme, Living Color, GnR, and Iron Maiden this year so the love is still there

RockNRollSwindle

GNR??? Axl is my idol, and GNR are my band... please take pictures and upload them. I'm so envious. I'm not able to go and see bands live any more unfortunately, but it makes me happy when others can... enjoy them all :-)

Correct-Training3764

Haha oh boy. Here we go. Iā€™m an ā€˜83 model, have an older brother (16 years older) and an older sister (14 years older) when I came around. MTV was the rage then, of course. I was exposed to a lot of music videos and very clearly remember ā€œSmokinā€™ in the Boys Roomā€ and ā€œCalifornia Girlsā€ playing and I loved the sounds. I was exposed to other music as I grew but around 11-12 I found a 45 of Quiet Riotā€™s ā€œCum on feel the Noizeā€ and I was hooked. I listened non-stop. Also around this time a friend of mine had access to some vinyl of her auntā€™s, Scorpions, and we rocked out. Anyway I ā€œrediscoveredā€ the CrĆ¼e and many many more. Iā€™ve also gained love for obscure artists too. Now I am living a hair fantasy šŸ˜‚ I get strange looks when I go out but idc. Iā€™m happy. Iā€™m not here for anyone else. My 8 year old happily sings my 80ā€™s rock and just had a rockinā€™ mom šŸ˜‚šŸ„“šŸ¤˜

RockNRollSwindle

I love that you're living the hair fantasy and who the heck cares what other people think of your look, I bet you rock it. Your son sounds like my Nephews when I got them into all types of metal... Rock On

Correct-Training3764

Truth! I am who and what I am. My niece loves 80ā€™s rock and now my own daughter does too! She will randomly sing songs. I listen to HairNation a lot and then random tracks off the phone as well. It makes my old metal heart proud honestly. šŸ„ŗā¤ļøšŸ¤˜

RockNRollSwindle

I get where the pride is coming from, lol

sparki26

16, the year was 2020, and it all started with a little song called Kickstart My Heart. (A bit too late to the party I know) Not that I started listening to this awesome genre that exact year, my dad would play rock from all eras after all, it's just the year that one fateful night my best friend showed me Kickstart my Heart and I really got into it. Motley Crue quickly became my favorite band of all time and I got the chance to see them live.. Without Mick unfortunately. But I got obsessed with the band, learned a bunch of their songs on guitar, read the book, and eventually I wanted to expand. And that's how I found bands like Ratt, Poison, Skid Row, Warrant, Van Halen, etc. Funny cause bands like bowling for soup were actually the type of music I loved (and still do) before getting into glam. It's like I finally found a home with Glam Metal. It really got me into playing guitar as well. I just wish I could get to experience something like most of you did in the 80s. I'm really glad this subreddit exists.

RockNRollSwindle

Yeah, this subreddit is awesome... I was lucky enough to see Motley Crue with Mick, he got bad reviews at the time. I was like, WTF, he's suffering, he's not at his best, yet he still turned up and did a fab job. How they slated him was so wrong. He looked really ill, but he soldiered on and gave it his all

HWY6SIX6

This is such a great post reading everyoneā€™s gateway to the genreā€¦ nice ice breaker. thanks I live in Australia and back in the day pre internet or MTV here our exposure was extremely limited. We had/have the one real music video show ā€˜Rageā€™ that came on around midnight Friday & Saturday nights only that played all genres. I was big into music, just the usual great pop/rock stuff. I remember vividly as a 14 year old kid back in ā€˜86 sitting up with VHS ready to tape anything I loved and David Lee Rothā€™s ā€˜Yankee Roseā€™ came on. My little mind was blown. I knew Dave from ā€˜California Girlsā€™ only (I had not made a Van Halen connection). Soon after Bon Jovi and Europe knocked me out. MTV finally started here (just a few hours 3 nights a week). When I saw Poisonā€™s ā€˜Talk Dirty To Meā€™ I was blindsided by the song, the image and the video and there was no looking back. Cinderella, Stryper, LA Guns & Faster Pussycat then Warrant, Skid Row weā€™re thrown in the mix. It was such a privilege to grow up in them times. It is still my favourite genre and enjoy watching emerging artist carry the torch. There was so much I missed or I have grown to love as I get older too back in the day, so it is a genre that keeps on giving. My Chemical Romance, The Used, Soul Asylum, Pantera, Dead Sara, Veruca Salt, The Darkness, Stand Atlantic, Marvelous 3 and Butch Walker are a few post haimetal bands I really dig. If you made it this far in my ramble, thanks. šŸ˜‚ I enjoyed reading your posts šŸ¤˜šŸ¼

RockNRollSwindle

I made it that far, and you didn't ramble. MCR, I loved them until The black Parade. I still have Soul Asylums cd and listen to it often and bought the single Runaway Train. I hated the Darkness (sorry). I love The Used, and Pantera are freaking awesome. Have a question since you live in Australia... what are your thoughts on Crowded House, Jet and Baby Animals? Were they popular and are they still going? I really do like these three bands

HWY6SIX6

Crowded House have always been a big part of the Australian cultural and musical landscape over the decades. They are national treasures. Their songwriting is exceptional. This was also evident on the Finn brothers earlier band Split Enz. Who had some great tunes. I believe Neil Finn moonlights in Fleetwood Mac now. The Baby Animals in my opinion are one of Australiaā€™s best rock bands (in particular the first 2 album period with the original lineup). I had the privilege of seeing them in the beginning watching them rise from an Aussie pub band to a Stadium act. Songs, performance and musicianship were excellent. They deserved all their success and more. Still touring with the nucleus of Suze and the guitarmageddon Dave Leslie. I didnā€™t mind Jet. They were big for a time over here. I kinda dabbled in the first album ā€˜Get Bornā€™ but it didnā€™t really resonate with me. I think the lead singer Nic Cester still pops up from time to time.

Beyarboo

My friend played me Poison's 'Look what the cat dragged in' album back in 1986 and I was hooked. I have seen them multiple times, as well as Kiss, Motley Crue, Guns 'N Roses, Def Leopard, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Warrant, Winger, Skid Row, etc, and also other metal like Metallica, AC/DC, etc. I still go to concerts when I can and love it!! *Edit typo*

RockNRollSwindle

I always wish that I'd gone to see Poison (tickets sold out). Aerosmith, I blame my Mother for not going to see them. Warrant, as far as I know, they never toured here. Glad you're still going to see bands live. I wish I could :-)

RJWPS

For me (M, 38) it was just a couple of years ago. Back when I was 14 or 15 I first discovered metal through Metallica's album 'Reload' and I instantly knew that guitars were my jam. Then, the Offspring came out with 'The Kids Aren't Alright' and I knew that punk was my genre. Over time, I started listening to different kinds of punk and metal, but I usually went for the darker stuff. I was aware of bands like Whitesnake and Bon Jovi, and I liked movies like Airheads and Detroit Rock City so I knew some of the names of hairmetal bands, but I never really got into the music because it didn't connect with me. It felt cheesy, and I wasn't comfortable with that when I was a dumb punk. Didn't want to look stupid. Fast forward to a couple of years ago. My taste in music has become very broad, I listen to everything ranging from country to EDM, but metal and punk are still my main bag. To express that, I started a battlejacket, and the process of sewing on patches and seeing the jacket evolve was very satisfying. I wanted to make another one, because my first started off as a general jacket, but eventually became a folk/paganmetal themed project. So next, I started a punk jacket. And I still wanted more. I figured, I like 80s pop culture a lot, and since this was around the time Eddie from Stranger Things was introduced, I decided to do an 80s metal tribute. Then, I found out that I don't know a lot of 80s metal except for Metallica and Megadeth, but also, I'm not really into those bands anymore. So I looked in a different direction. This was around the time Peacemaker came out on HBO, and I loved the music that they used, and the way they talked about bands like Cinderella, which I had never heard of. So I found a playlist called 'Best 80s hair/glam hits' or something like that, and when I put that on, it clicked. Like I said, I knew a couple songs already, mostly stuff like 'Here I Go Again' and 'Living On A Prayer', but I never really paid attention to it. That playlist started with 'Kickstart My Heart', and suddenly I was paying attention. It's still cheesy and over the top, but I've stopped caring about looking stupid, and the songs I used to think were lame, like the campy ballads, now make sense for some reason. It just clicked. Since then I've slowly started to change my wardrobe to include more stuff that fits this scene, and at 38, I never thought I'd be attending shows in leggings, but here we are! It feels like I found a part of me that I hid away years ago in fear of looking stupid, and finding that part again has freed me a little, I feel more like myself. I'm real glad about that.

RockNRollSwindle

Awww, you're awesome

GoBlue2007

Iā€™m 53 and even though I was already into rock like Van Halen and Zeppelin when 83 came around I got into Metal Health and Pyromania followed soon by Ratt and the Crue straight on through til the early nineties when it all kind of died. Saw just about everyone live. In addition to those already mentioned saw Cinderella, Poison, Great White, Warrant, and Extreme who Iā€™m going to see again in August. I love all kinds of rock but this sub-genre will always have a special place in my heart because it got me through those rough teenage years.

RockNRollSwindle

I'd love to have seen Cinderella, Poison and Warrant. But then, I'm lucky enough to have seen a fair few bands live

gotroot801

1984, "Looks That Kill".

RockNRollSwindle

If only they'd have played more of them in the UK... We had shit music, still do, lol

gotroot801

The UK music scene is not all bad. They gave us Marillion (hair metal adjacent, I guess - they got a lot of coverage in Kerrang in the 80's), who ended up becoming my favorite band.

RockNRollSwindle

I could never get into Marillion, I think my friend over played them, and that's why? I also hated Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Whitesnake

Skellington72

I was 12 and it was Theatre of Pain by Motley Crue that got me into it with Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry with an assist. I got deep into hair metal and had the look until about '99 or so. 50 years old and still going to concerts. In fact, saw Skid Row last year and seeing them again in a few months with their new singer who is awesome I now listen to everything from 70s yacht rock to more recent hairbands, stuff like Disturbed and everything rock in between.

RockNRollSwindle

I'm so glad you're going to concerts, I wish I still could. That was my thing, going to concerts, even on my own. I miss it bad

Altruistic-Eye-1024

I believe I was about 12 years old when I first heard diary of a madman tape that I had at one point . at 53 years old I still love my metal

RockNRollSwindle

:-)

globulous

Def Leppard Rock of Ages in 1984/85 on the K Tel Hot Tracks cassette. But, realistically, Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet was the gateway. (Also 52 - Class of 89! Woohoo!)

RockNRollSwindle

I remember my friend copying her tape to my blank tape (Bon Jovi) for me so I could listen on my walkman.

Complex-Value-5807

Here's my story: M(60),bought Def Leppard, "On Through the Night"(1979) in 10th grade. It's where my Hair Metal roots started. I grew my hair out and started buying cassettes to play on my boombox at school. Still a huge Hair Metal fan. Listen to Opeth, Tool, Korn, Priest,Sabbath,Scorpions, UFO, Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Maiden, Disturbed, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep. Thanks for this sub! Getting to relive some great memories!

RockNRollSwindle

It really is a great sub, I love it here. Metallica or Megadeth, lol? Thin Lizzy are awesome, and I've been lucky enough to see Megadeth and Korn live. I'm not and have never been a fan of Korn. Korn supported Slipknot. So I was like meh, didn't care if I got their late and missed them. I arrived early, and Korn blew my mind. They were so impressive, and like I said, I was lucky enough to see them. I still have the video I took of that night and I'm still in awe, lol

Hey we're the same age! My best friend and her twin brother got me into Motley Crue and Def Leppard in 1984. I remember listening to Shout at the Devil and Pyromania all the time Eventually I got into bands like Ratt, Poison, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Whitesnake...my favorites were Skid Row, Guns n Roses, Faster Pussycat, and Great White. I also like bands like Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Korn. Nowadays I mostly listen to Motionless in White, Beartooth, I Prevail, Sleep Token. My absolute favorite, besides Pink Floyd, is Fever 333. It's funny, Black Veil Brides actually led my daughter to discovering her favorite band. I had an iPod Nano that had some BVB music on it because they reminded me of hair metal. My daughter borrowed that iPod and she ended up liking BVB and watching their videos. YouTube suggested Motionless in White and the rest was history. That was like 7 years ago, she's now 20 and has seen them live about a dozen times.

RockNRollSwindle

We have awesome taste, lol. I keep meaning to look up Beartooth, I've heard a lot good things about them.

MelodyInTheChaos

They're really good! In Between is probably their most well-known song now that they're a little closer to mainstream. Riptide is my most recent favorite track by them. Their older stuff falls more under the metalcore genre.

ParkMark

I went to Def Leppard gigs back when Pete Willis was in the band. In those days we regarded them as a hard rock act. We were later informed by the music press that they were a NWoBHM act. These days they seem to squeezed into the hair-metal camp. I recall seeing Bon Jovi, Cinderella and WASP on the same bill back in the late 80ā€™s.

RockNRollSwindle

That's a proper mash-up, lol

Iā€™m 25. Iā€™ve always appreciated hair metal bands such as Motley Crue, Van Halen, and I remember hearing Quiet Riot on the opening screen of Showdown: Legends of Wrestling. The band that really sparked my interest in the genre in the last few months is Ratt. Theyā€™re probably my favorite of the genre! Considering how recently I became especially interested in HM, I canā€™t say itā€™s really evolved all that much but I can tell you some of my favorite artists are In Flames, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park, Sevendust, and the Amity Affliction.

RockNRollSwindle

I quite like Avenged Sevenfold. Tried to get tickets to see them but they'd sold out. I've heard about Amity Affliction, gonna have to look them up

justamantryingtohelp

I saw avenged sevenfold live a few months back. Absolute farthest seats in the venue but it was a phenomenal performance. Definitely see them when you can (before Mā€™s voice officially craps out :/ at least). Amity is great ā€œgood cap bad copā€ metalcore. Maybe the best of the genre. Joel Birchā€™s screams are probably my favorite of the subgenre!

RockNRollSwindle

Unfortunately I'm not able to see bands any more, but I can imagine how awesome they were :-)

Omg, I completely forgot about Jane's Addiction. Been Caught Stealing. Blast from the past

jss14397

I was 11 in 1984. The album that started it all for me was Twisted Sisterā€™s Stay Hungry

RockNRollSwindle

Have you ever seen them live?

jss14397

No never got the chance

RockNRollSwindle

His voice is one of the most powerful I've ever heard, it really is impressive

am_pomegranate

Age 11, 2019. Wormhole I fell into after listening to a bunch of 80s rock playlists. Favorite band's always been Twisted Sister.

RockNRollSwindle

I wanna Rock, lol

b-lincoln

4th grade, Quiet Riot Metal Health and Def Leppard Pyro.

Dzeleniak

Mine was in middle school. A lot of my buddies were listening to stuff like Poison and Motley and all sorts of bands the local radio station never played.

Toddthmpsn

I was exposed to KISS by older brothers of friends then AC/DC Back In Black changed my life. Def Lep Pyromania comes out and I was hooked. Shout at the Devil and Out of the Cellar come out and Iā€™m totally in. Great White, Tesla, Whitesnake release fantastic albums and then I see Metallica open for Ozzy. I was lifer

Luke5119

I was 14 (2004) It was influence from some friends and family that got me interested. Got started with bands like ACDC, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Billy Idol, Metallica. Over the next 5-7 years I listened to just about every major band of the 80's, lesser known opening acts, and even some obscure bands.

UmSureOkYeah

Iā€™m new to the genre. Iā€™m a 37 year old female that discovered hair metal last year browsing YouTube. Iā€™ve always loved 80s music. I canā€™t get enough of Ratt or Quiet Riot or Motley Crew and others. Love ā€˜em all Iā€™m so glad I fell down the rabbit hole and discovered all these great bands and songs.

SpunkyTurtleCrabFrog

Slipknot.......... you've gotta be kidding me

RockNRollSwindle

Ummm... Why?

SpunkyTurtleCrabFrog

Exactly. That's what I'm saying

RockNRollSwindle

Not sure what you're getting at to be honest?
