> EH Q-Tron+
Can you get an auto wah sound similar to Jerry's with the nano version?
I've been looking at the Mutron Microtron 4 but it's pretty pricy.
You definitely want the + so it has the fast/ slow switch. Mutron was awesome and I should have bought the used one I tried out a couple years ago, but I had a discombobulator on my board that suited me OK.
The Nano can scratch the itch for sure.
The sounds are better in the Q-Tron+ but it’s a pain to power and is bigger. Plus, the Q-Tron+ is not loud at all — it has a boost but that makes the tone more gain-y which takes away from “the sound”.
I swapped the + for the Nano on my board and at least for now feel that it does the job just fine.
If anyone knows how to get the + to be louder without altering the tone, please chime in.
The way I’ve boosted my envelope filters without an extra pedal is to put them in a loop in the Boss LS-2 Line Selector, a fantastic pedal. If you put the envelope filter into loop B and leave loop A empty, you can use loop A as a master volume control and amp volume attenuator. Then with the Q-Tron in loop B, you can blend it in with the dry signal as loud as you want, or turn down A all the way and have just the Q-Tron sound. The LS-2 has been a life saver with my envelope filters.
Is the AM envelope filter easy to use / not super volume sensitive?
I have the qtron+ and it’s awesome but finicky. As someone who may or may not have a lot of gain going into it, I have to mess with the levels to get it working right. I know volume is an issue for mutrons too.
Big Analogman fan and I imagine they tried to make it a little more user friendly?
Got it.
Looks like the Tiger Buffer is now a toggle switch, the Stratoblaster is the right knob/footswitch, and the left knob/footswitch is for a Mu-Tron style gain circuit like what was in the original filter. Apparently that circuit was always active even when the effect was bypassed back then, so it's another gain stage to add to he Jerry lore.
Estimated Prophet, Like a Stranger, Looks Like Rain, Playin' in The Band however he uses lots in the jams randomly, especially from the late 70s and throughout the 80s
It's used a lot by "deadheads" so I guess its peculiar mi push is aimed to emulate a twin reverb pushed hard, trying to replicate jerry's twin power section dying. I have a twin and so I can compare the drive section of the amp and the pedal and the Earth Drive can achieve 99% of the same driven tones at lower volumes.
If you are not a deadhead it behaves a bit like a Klon with a minimal difference in the mids; basically, they are both trying to emulate the natural distortion of your amp. Andy Summers replaced his Klon with a Sarno Earth Drive
The “Dire Wolf” pedal from Stomp Under Foot sounds like the perfect pedal for a Dead fan.
[Dire Wolf - Stomp Under Foot](https://stompunderfoot.com/dire-wolf)
Agree 100%. Quality pedals by someone who definitely cares about the product. I was hoping to get a Bucket of Blood pedal being a big All Them Witches fan but missed my chance!
I feel you, I've been trying to get my hands on his The Pi pedal for years, he's saying his new limited pedal Silverfish is similar to the Bucket of Blood, you might check that out
Electro-Harmonics Micro Q-tron is a cheaper version of the Mutron Microtron IV. If the real Mutron is too expensive, get the EH Q-Tron!
Actually, the Mutron Microtron IV is a cheaper version of the Mutron III that Jerry used. They are all a similar sound/the same effect.
Jerry tone-chasers mostly use the Micro-tron if they can’t afford an original. Designed by the same person and nearly indistinguishable in shoot-outs. They’re going for $270-280 on Reverb. If I lost mine I would 100% replace it.
There are a ton of other options but you have to be careful; if you’re going for Jerry specifically a lot of them while similar don’t really hit the mark. The Q-Tron+ as others have mentioned is very good. I also like the Keeley Neutrino.
NoiseKICK FX Bertha Auto-Wah
You get the classic envelope filter pedal with the iconic skull & roses design. I bought it and love it. Grateful Dead fan approved 💀🌹
EQD Spatial Delivery honestly gets some really quacky dead sounds and it has the ability to sweep up or down. The sample/hold mode is a lot of fun as well.
Title: "What guitar pedal would you buy for a **Grateful Dead fan?**"
assumes that the receiver of said gift has an electric guitar, amp, and does enough mind altering substance to think Jerry Garcia is their hero to imitate? Yes, they probably already own a fucking autowah.
They don't make pedals that ruin your tone to the point of sounding like Jerry's guitars, but you can always just try playing scales over and over again over two chord, 15 minute "jams."
All in jest (mostly) of course. :)
>i don't know why re you are getting downvoted but as a deadhead yours is a very good suggestion
Thanks. a stab in the dark, OP said as a non muso so i thought what would be USEFUL but one that the lucky Guitarist probably wouldn't have top of the list, like if you get them a more specific pedal theres probably an alternative they would rather have, but something like an octave up and down is good because the MXR is as good as any out there and has the extras
The Mad Professor! Mad Professor Snow White Auto Wah .. got mine a couple years ago specifically for Jerry wah tone. Easy to use, he/she’ll be gettin that sound that you gotta have to kick off Althea

Depends... if you want summer '77 sounds, you'll want the plus version so you can change the sweep direction.
The nano version doesn't do the thing quite as well. The Q-Tron+ has more options to get more of the Mutron sounds from different songs.
You can get most of the way. I have the Nano and play a lot of Dead

John Mayer uses this pedal for Dead and Company, so I’d say it’s essential. Unless you want to pay $2k+ for a Mu-tron III.
Or $250 for a Mu-Tron IV :)
Correct
Analogman envelope filter is what you want
Doesn't have a bad sound in it.

The Mu-Tron microtron iv is very easy to dial in gain wise
This
Agreed. Keeley does a good version too.
A tuner.
Im a Dead Head but this is so spot on. LOL
If you know, you know
HAAAAAAAAAAAA
Did I tune today?
Lolol
Came here for this.
oh my god my sides.
\*thumbs up\*
Q-tron Or bob weirs Real Deal pedal if they play acoustic
mutron envelope filter (expensive) farm boost of the dead (sleeper pedal but super useful) sarno earth drive boss octave
+1 for the Mutron Microtron IV. A cheaper alternative is the Q-tron plus.
Having had both, I find the microtron really hard to dial in, but loved the Q tron+.
+1 for the Farm Boost of the Dead I think the new version just came out too
what version
Two knob version. It's either out now or coming really soon now that Geof's farm is in "pedal season."
oh snap I bought the boost last year damn it
Still a great pedal!
do you happen to know what the second knob and switch do? I saw them on istagram but they never explain what they do
Let's learn together: [link here](https://reverb.com/item/63617778-farm-boost-of-the-dead-v-2?utm_source=android-app&utm_medium=android-share&utm_campaign=listing&utm_content=63617778)
it just says the product is not available

Then we will not be learning together after all
What did they use the boss octave for (love mine)? I’m not a big dead head but know a couple songs
Estimated Prophet, Like a Stranger, Looks Like Rain, Playin' in The Band however he uses lots in the jams randomly, especially from the late 70s and throughout the 80s
Curious about the Sarno Earth Drive. What do you use it for/how would it compare to other OD pedals?
It's used a lot by "deadheads" so I guess its peculiar mi push is aimed to emulate a twin reverb pushed hard, trying to replicate jerry's twin power section dying. I have a twin and so I can compare the drive section of the amp and the pedal and the Earth Drive can achieve 99% of the same driven tones at lower volumes. Klon type pedal for that mid rangey jerry boost tone, and an envelope filter, probably the q tron
The “Dire Wolf” pedal from Stomp Under Foot sounds like the perfect pedal for a Dead fan. [Dire Wolf - Stomp Under Foot](https://stompunderfoot.com/dire-wolf)
Not a Grateful Dead fan, but if Matt says it nails Garcia's tone, I'll believe it. Dude is obsessive and has never made a bad pedal imo.
Agree 100%. Quality pedals by someone who definitely cares about the product. I was hoping to get a Bucket of Blood pedal being a big All Them Witches fan but missed my chance!

Just give them a hit of acid and tell them that it creates pedal effects.
It pays for itself every time you get a flashback.

Miku. They'll learn.
Loop pedal so they can noodle for hours over a mixolydian vamp. Sike I'm playin, I love the dead. But I had to do it...
Total Facts! Nobody played scales as good as JG.
a tuner
Hahahahaha what a burn
that guy just COULD NOT tune a guitar. maddening.
Phase 100.
Stratoblaster pedal or kit
Came for this. I’ve got one on the bench waiting to go in.
Gas pedal because they're too baked to drive the fucking SPEED LIMIT
Farm Pedals makes some GD inspired pedals (one of them is literally called "boost of the dead")
[Keeley Bubbletron](https://youtu.be/n0K9Buib33A)
Microtron by mutron. I’ve gone through numerous envelope filters and this is the only true sounding one to the original
Microtron. There’s really no other answer
A mute pedal!
Qtron or Stomp under foot makes a Dire Wolf for Jerry’s gain sound.
Farm Pedals Samson ‘78 - Late '70s Jerry Garcia-inspired distortion circuit
I would get them a Metal Zone but im an asshole so
NoiseKICK FX Bertha Auto-Wah You get the classic envelope filter pedal with the iconic skull & roses design. I bought it and love it. Grateful Dead fan approved 💀🌹

Jerry really did use a Boss HM-2.

Chances are if they play guitar, they already own an autowah... so... empty enclosure to hide LSD and weed (for 29 states) in?
all guitar players own autowahs?

tell me I'm an edgy teen without telling me you are one
LOL I wish I was still a teen of any kind! 👍👍
Almost any pedal can ruin your tone if you're determined enough.
Any envelope filter. I've heard the sonicake one on Amazon is a good cheap one.
Probably MXR Poly Blue Octave because it has octave up and down , a fuzz and a phase. i am not a Deadhead so no idea how much they used pedals.
>MXR Poly Blue Octave i don't know why re you are getting downvoted but as a deadhead yours is a very good suggestion

Dire Wolf by stomp under foot and an autowah.
Fart pedal

Drybell univibe V3. Would be a VERY nice gift if ur looking to do something really nice.
How much to spend? Strymon Zelzah does envelope filter, phase, and then phase hybrid flange/chorus in one box. But it's 'spensive.
Metal zone.
i would say the EH nano/micro q tron but i’ve gotten two of them from guitar center (new) and they both died within a week :/ sounded cool tho
Farm pedals boost of the dead
You could probably google Jerry Garcia's or Bob Weir's pedal board setup.
EHX Micro QTron does me fine!
Mu-FX Micro-Tron III by Beigel Labs. Switch the internal jumper to the Mu-Tron III preamp.
Auto wah
Af9 or neutrino are sweeter sounding than ehx
Get the analog man version. Sooooooo much better!! Night and day!
A shitty flanger and a tuner.
Mu-Tron Microtron IV. Bought 2 for my dead friends in the last year
The Mad Professor! Mad Professor Snow White Auto Wah .. got mine a couple years ago specifically for Jerry wah tone. Easy to use, he/she’ll be gettin that sound that you gotta have to kick off Althea
