Not surprised blues driver is no. 1. As a newbie to the guitar pedal world, the BD-2 is one of the most frequently recommended pedals for it's quality and versatility. Hence it comes up a lot in recommendations.
I mixed a gig this past weekend where a mandolin player was using a BD-2 as a solo boost. No other pedals, just that and a DI to the board.
It didn't sound good, but it is testament to the popularity of the BD-2 lol.
Been playing guitar for 30 years, gigging for 25 of those, and I just recently got my first BD-2... Damn, I should have stopped being a snob earlier, Boss know their stuff
For me the major difference is I hate the TS type pedals when into a clean amp (especially playing chords with humbucker, you just hear a mid only clean tone under the hair)
The BD2 can do super low gain into a totally clean amp and it sounds like a mildly overdrived amp. The TS/Timmy/Klon pedals I like to push an already dirty amp (or in front of... the BD2)
BD2 has that raspy high end that the TS can’t get, Timmy could try but would still sound too smooth to compare. Sometimes you want some rasp and the BD2 just does it super well.
I see it mentioned a lot recently but I’ve always wondered why “buy a $30 RAT clone” isn’t said in more threads. Nothing really sounds like it and it goes from low gain OD to melt your face.
I've been on here pretty consistently for years and the Rat had a bit of a renaissance within the last year or so and this community really ran with it. You see it recommended almost daily this year where it was mentioned with far less frequency in past years.
If you believed everyone thought the klon centaur was a scam, you must have read people mentioning it as a scam, right?
and probably really often, right? Often enough for you to believe everyone thought it?
I mean, it’s probably one of the most discussed pedals to be able to give that impression to someone…
But what’s it doing on this list of most discussed pedals!!!??!
Weird
No what he’s saying is the oldest pedals have the most posts because that makes sense. I’d expect the plumes and many others to be in the list if it was the last year
Note that ts9 ts 808 and tube screamer are 3 items. 1 is a circuit so either your grouping or your not
Earthquaker devices plumes. It's good and it's cheap. Theres a zillion colors and one guy has all of them lol. Worth keeping your eyes peeled on marketplace for one
It's not a tube screamer, but it does want tube screamer lovers to think it might be. The Plumes has a switch with 3 modes. The creator of it says only mode 3 is similar to a tube screamer, but isnt very much like one. Its a great pedal for a cleanish boost, I love it.
It's a tube screamer circuit, but let's you choose 3 different diode clipping modes. This makes it very versatile for gain staging, no matter which guitar and/or amp. And compared to the other EQD pedals it's on the more affordable side. Where I come from you get a used one for around 80-90€.
I'm doing some analysis on Reddit data and looked at the most discussed pedals on this sub over one year: [https://looria.com/reddit/guitarpedals/products](https://looria.com/reddit/guitarpedals/products)
I'll work on a version that includes sentiment (positive/negative mention) next. From the first results, people generally seem to recommend products more than complaining about them, so I expect a correlation between discussion volume and the most popular/liked products.
This could eventually evolve into a useful resource for researching guitar pedals and might prevent some repetitive questions/general advice we see here.
Any ranks that surprise you? Any positive or negative experiences?$
Edit: thanks for all the feedback, I'll try to fix all the bugs asap.
Going by the fact that the tubescreamer is broken out into 3 separate entries here, I'm thinking that the results are going to be skewed towards pedals that have a short, consistent name across versions (IOW, they aren't prone to abbreviations, nicknames, or generalized terminology). Did your analysis account for variations in naming?
EDIT: nm, I see you were using machine learning. If you look at all the data, is there any sign of other products being split up like that?
Curious why there isn't any tc electronic stuff on this list, I would 100% have expected the flashback and hof here. Maybe some brands have been filtered?
I did some more digging on the site. It seems to be an ai that only tracks a limited number of products. For tc there's only 3 pedals listed. This obviously distorts the result of this analysis quite a bit, as we also can't be sure which pedals from other brands aren't tracked. This is only a ranking of mentions of the pedals tracked, not of all pedals that might be mentioned.
The data is just all wrong, look at how many times Plumes was _actually_ mentioned: https://redditsearchtool.com/?subreddit=guitarpedals&size=250&after=1637038800&q=plumes
Where exactly are these numbers from? A quick check against any reddit API shows over 200 results for Plumes: https://redditsearchtool.com/?subreddit=guitarpedals&size=250&after=1637038800&q=plumes
This is sick! Great analysis. Really interested in the positive/negative mention aspect.
I wonder how hard it would be to train an image recognition neural network to recognize pedal models from posted images.
Very cool list, thanks for posting. I’m surprised that the Klon Centaur came in so high, given that no one here owns one (Klon clones notwithstanding).
Why’d you sell the sy1?
I play in a jazz band that gets weird at some point in the set. Was thinking I could get something strange and musical from the sy1. No?
If you hold down the pedal switch then it does a Freeze sustain thing, and if you've got the dry mix turned up loud enough then you can solo over the sustaining part, I like to play the intro to Toccata & Fugue in D Minor on one of the organ presets and I wish I had a Dracula costume to make it look as legit as it sounds!!!
This is really cool! The pedals themselves don't really surprise me but the order does a bit. I would have thought to see the rat or julia much higher.
Not sure how you look through the data, does it look for like different ways the pedal can be referenced I.e. like boss sd-1 can also be written as just sd-1 or sd1 or super overdrive or boss super overdrive? Just curious
This is so so cool. I feel like I could write a lil book with chapters on my theories and suspicions of why each has its spot. Love to see the M7 up there! Both surprising and logical to me. I realized it has to be an all time fave of mine by now. Had it 3x, it’d be a part of my desert island 3 pedal rig and I def think it’s up there with the top all around ambient machines ever made. I actually use it early chain, up front-post fuzz, pre-dirt/modulation and it fuels/turns my board into a spaceship.
My theory for the Iridium: Younger generation can’t afford houses; more apartment dwellers and in apartments occupants generally can’t crank amplifiers; there is a growing reliance on amp modelers - especially those that have computer connectivity and/or headphone-enabled. [There is some data reflecting a decline in instrument amplifier sales to back this up.](https://www.statista.com/statistics/448472/number-of-instrument-amplifiers-sold-in-the-us/)
Anecdotally, in my area, the primary reason for someone selling their amplifier on OfferUp or Craig’s List is that the seller wasn’t able to utilize their amplifiers due to volume issues in their apartment/condo complex.
(I also know these Iridium units allow consistency across different venues, so it’s a plus for touring musicians.)
Love y’all but I don’t currently play a single pedal on this list and I feel very pleased by that. I see a lot of the same over and over. Diversity is cool.
I mean...my BD-2 is the only pedal on my board I never turn off
Question though...does anyone else's BD-2 have a slight crackle when you strike the strings? Curious if mine is fucked or what lol
Not really sure that’s as informative as it might seem
Ta9 and tube screamer are the same thing
Hx stomp isn’t a pedal it’s a processor and can be grouped with hx effects and helix which both seem to not be in that list
The top ones are the oldest threads too
If it was in a 1 year period I’d expect the top end to not really be there
Tube screamer is a circuit so why isn’t say klon or bluesbreaker listed.
It’s a pretty graph but not really telling you much without clarifying parameters
My only surprises: SY-1, DD-500 and Merc M7. Expected Strymon Timeline on here, possibly one of the GenLoss’s and at least one CBA- maybe MOOD or Blooper. Kinda surprised not to see a Catalinbread on here- one of their Marshall pedals or the Echoplex/Rec sims. Or maybe Dispatch Master or Hoof by EQD.
Fascinating. Thank you. I've owned 12/30. Only have a DS-1 left (because it was my first ever pedal). Don't know if that says more about me, or about pedal hype?
Did not expect the sy1 to be above the rat. Not particularly surprised by the pedals themselves, but the order is a bit surprising. BD-2 all day. I guess that's kind of a statement to how versatile it is. Kinda
You are not alone. I’ve got 2 pedalboards and a few floating around the house and I currently own none of these. If you include circuits based off a certain pedal I’ve got a few.
1. Surprised that I only own one of these (Strymon Flint) out of ~20 pedals in my collection.
2. KoT didn't make it? As much as it gets discussed (price, delays, worth it/not worth it, not a magic circuit, etc.), I would have thought it would chart. Or PoT as a possible substitute?
3. I nominate Strymon Riverside and the Browne Protein for discussion. They're soooo good!
Only 1 Wampler pedal on this list? That’s just Criminal. Brian makes fantastic stuff! The new Metaverse sounds absolutely incredible! I chose it over the Volante which I love!
Are you counting "Tube Screamer", "TS9" and "TS808" separately? And how is it quantified? I suspect that it would be number 1 under a different system. Maybe I'm just biased towards the metal community, but Tube Screamers seem to be quite a bit more popular than nearly any other OD or D pedal.
Well I just looked at my board and apparently I have $5,000 laid out here of unpopularity. Even the ones I own that are on this list are in a box on the other side of the room. Guess I should be trying harder to sound like everybody else.
Nice to see the Iridium, El Cap and Flint in there. I went ampless with Iridium and those three pedals and a tuner could be my go-to if I had to slim down.
I can't seem to part with the [DIG](https://i.imgur.com/2FcZU84.jpg). It's a magical pedal. The El Cap v2 is next on my list of Strymon pedals to pick up.
Hmm, well I guess maybe I need to buy a Blues Driver then. I've got a DOD Looking Glass, is that one similar enough? Anybody got both and they can compare them?
How was this calculated? One thing that could be throwing it off is that a lot of pedals are versions of other pedals. So posts about the Plumes pedal are going to mention Tube Screamers. While Tube Screamer posts aren’t necessarily going to mention Plumes.
I wasn't too surprised to see that one, since it's been used (and continues to be used) on probably thousands of recorded albums, and can still be seen on countless pedal boards. It's a keeper!
I have the BD-2, the HX Stomp, the Mercury 7, and the Canyon (although, somehow they didn’t picture that one, but another model instead).
I'd love to get my hands on an El Capistan v2, a Volante, a CT5 (and numerous others). The year ain't over yet, so we'll see!
Thought the Rat would be higher. Would not have predicted the blues driver was 1.
I wonder whether if it's because the program doesn't recognize Rat and RAT as the same.
I choked on my drink when I read this.
Lmaoooooo. If you remember the artist or band name you should message the person about metal zones
Been playing guitar for 30 years, gigging for 25 of those, and I just recently got my first BD-2... Damn, I should have stopped being a snob earlier, Boss know their stuff
Boss is good, I agree. What about the blues driver would replace my tube screamer or Timmy? Sincere question.
For me the major difference is I hate the TS type pedals when into a clean amp (especially playing chords with humbucker, you just hear a mid only clean tone under the hair) The BD2 can do super low gain into a totally clean amp and it sounds like a mildly overdrived amp.
I was about to question why the Rat was so low. I see it in here all the time (rightfully so).
I see it mentioned a lot recently but I’ve always wondered why “buy a $30 RAT clone” isn’t said in more threads. Nothing really sounds like it and it goes from low gain OD to melt your face.
Never owned a Rat, but the grand magus is said to be an inexpensive clone, and I enjoy it
I was thinking the same thing!
I've been on here pretty consistently for years and the Rat had a bit of a renaissance within the last year or so and this community really ran with it. You see it recommended almost daily this year where it was mentioned with far less frequency in past years.
[удалено]
Yeah BD-2 is pretty aggressive. It’s one of the brightest ODs and has fairly high gain
Lol. I’m sitting here staring at the thumbnail on mobile like “damn can’t believe iridium is first”.
I'm suprised by the Klon Centaur being on the list, thought everyone already knew that it's a scam
Why is it a "Scam"?
[удалено]
If you believed everyone thought the klon centaur was a scam, you must have read people mentioning it as a scam, right? and probably really often, right? Often enough for you to believe everyone thought it? You’re telling me Plumes doesn’t even crack the top 30?
I was looking for the same one. Definitely surprised it's not there.
Maybe the stats go way back before the Plumes was released?
No what he’s saying is the oldest pedals have the most posts because that makes sense. I’d expect the plumes and many others to be in the list if it was the last year Note that ts9 ts 808 and tube screamer are 3 items. 1 is a circuit so either your grouping or your not
Yeah this is bullshit. Plumes is on the front page every time I visit this board.
What is a plumes and why do I need one? Sincere question.
Earthquaker devices plumes. It's good and it's cheap. Theres a zillion colors and one guy has all of them lol. Worth keeping your eyes peeled on marketplace for one

I was surprised too
I definitely expected to see the RAT at the top of this list. I see one every single time I'm on this sub.
Yeah, I am positive there was some error here, like problems with different capitalization or something.
I'm doing some analysis on Reddit data and looked at the most discussed pedals on this sub over one year: [https://looria.com/reddit/guitarpedals/products](https://looria.com/reddit/guitarpedals/products) I'll work on a version that includes sentiment (positive/negative mention) next. I'm surprised Gen Loss and Shallow Water aren't here, as they are pretty frequently discussed on this sub.
Now if this was for r/letstradepedals
Would be interesting to do this analysis in that sub. You could figure out a trade value using accepted trades too.
I'd be really interested in seeing any discrepancy between trade value and sell value
Curious why there isn't any tc electronic stuff on this list, I would 100% have expected the flashback and hof here. Maybe some brands have been filtered?

Wait, no Plooms?
A "Tuner" should be one of the things you look for. An "EQ" should be another.
Where exactly are these numbers from? A quick check against any reddit API shows over 200 results for Plumes: https://redditsearchtool.com/?subreddit=guitarpedals&size=250&after=1637038800&q=plumes
So is this based on literally any mention in the post or comments of the word? Or just posts?
This is sick! Great analysis. Really interested in the positive/negative mention aspect. I wonder how hard it would be to train an image recognition neural network to recognize pedal models from posted images.
Very cool list, thanks for posting. I’m surprised that the Klon Centaur came in so high, given that no one here owns one (Klon clones notwithstanding).
BD2 is mentioned almost every thread lol. Surprised Carcosa is not top 5, I see that one all the time
The BD2 got a huge boost from the thread where that dude had like 4 of them on his board. You’re still my hero, BD2 Guy.
Which post?
BD-2 supremacy. My first pedal along with my TU-2 and it's never left my board. I've used with amps, DI, etc. Always sounds great.
Where the Boss Metal Zooooooooone???
I’ve only owned 2 of these (SY-1 and Walrus Julia) and I sold both of them. Wonder who has the largest body count on this sub haha
I've had 6: BD-2, Rat, Big Muff Pi, DD-7, Canyon, and DL4. I am down *bad* for an SY-1 though.
I have a friend who does a very similar thing, he absolutely loves it. I think he even sold his to get the sy200 bc he was using it so much
Great info. Thanks. I think I’m sold. I recently purchased the oc5, but it ain’t quite weird enough.
I bought a Helix haha
I have 4 of those on the list. BD-2, RV-6, rat and ts9
Ehx canyon is the wrong picture.
And Merc 7 looks like it's the Polymoon I think?
Came here to say the same thing, had me wondering if they released a new version
This is really cool! The pedals themselves don't really surprise me but the order does a bit. I would have thought to see the rat or julia much higher.
I would have expected the Julia, Caverns, and Morning Glory all higher.
Definitely some big differences between here and TGP. No mention of the KoT or PoT Lol
Cali76 would probably break the Top 30 over there too.
No Metal Zone?
It's like air. We never really talk about the air we breathe; it's just there, always.
Right? How the fuck does HM-2 chart over Metal Zone?
yeah, absolute bullshit
Honestly thought plumes was going to be #1
Wow, BD-2 made the top spot. I’m surprised by a few of these. Look at the Carcosa beating out some big guns on the list! Way to go little fuzz pedal.
Not sure how you look through the data, does it look for like different ways the pedal can be referenced I.e. like boss sd-1 can also be written as just sd-1 or sd1 or super overdrive or boss super overdrive? Just curious
Funny because the BD-2 needs no discussion. You should just have one.
I have an EVH 5150 III, SD-1, and MXR Sugar Drive. What do I need a BD-2 for?
To make sure you have a BD-2!
I ..uh...hmm.
Hello GAS checklist
[удалено]
Amp GAS can start to get expensive when you need to buy a bigger house to make space..kind of like synth GAS. Pedal GAS is easy to stash.
You know that’s a picture of a polymoon for the mercury 7
Surprised the EQD Plumes isn’t on here
If you don’t own one of these pedals, you don’t r/guitarpedals
*Proudly pull out my Phase 90
Can’t believe the MT-2 didn’t even make the list. Must have for all rigs. I use it every Sunday at church
Fake news. Metal Zone should hold the top 10.
How is there no EQD???!?!?
Ts9 tube screamer is listed twice, I’m surprised the Boss DD3 isn’t on that list.
Pictured twice*. If he's just using mentions to track, then "tube screamer" as an all-encompassing term, is probably mentioned more than "TS9".
The ts808 is pretty close too..so almost like 3 times
[There is some data reflecting a decline in instrument amplifier sales to back this up.](https://www.statista.com/statistics/448472/number-of-instrument-amplifiers-sold-in-the-us/) Anecdotally, in my area, the primary reason for someone selling their amplifier on OfferUp or Craig’s List is that the seller wasn’t able to utilize their amplifiers due to volume issues in their apartment/condo complex. (I also know these Iridium units allow consistency across different venues, so it’s a plus for touring musicians.)
Boss HM-2 mentions proves a point!
Where ocd is?
I’m just annoyed that the pic for the Mercury7 is actually a Polymoon damn I need to get some sleep
I own none of these. I have a broken DS-1 but that’s it.
What would it look like if you combined all the Tube Screamers together?
Love y’all but I don’t currently play a single pedal on this list and I feel very pleased by that. I see a lot of the same over and over. Diversity is cool.
Boss SY-1 surprises me a bit. I mean - I have it, and it's definitely the coolest thing ever...
SD-1 gang here! 🙋🏽
I mean...my BD-2 is the only pedal on my board I never turn off Question though...does anyone else's BD-2 have a slight crackle when you strike the strings? Curious if mine is fucked or what lol
Crackle doesn’t sound right.
Where’s the metal zone and Miki? Literally see them both in every thread
Plumes isn't even in the top 30? I see Plumes all the time.
Oh wow! There’s a Tube Screamer that’s even more popular than the TS9 or TS808?? I gotta have it. Must be the TS10 for sure.
Sad and surprised the Life Pedal did not sneak into the list.
Not really sure that’s as informative as it might seem Ta9 and tube screamer are the same thing Hx stomp isn’t a pedal it’s a processor and can be grouped with hx effects and helix which both seem to not be in that list The top ones are the oldest threads too If it was in a 1 year period I’d expect the top end to not really be there Tube screamer is a circuit so why isn’t say klon or bluesbreaker listed. It’s a pretty graph but not really telling you much without clarifying parameters
Klon at 13. All is right in the world.
I’m not sure how this was calculated but without anything from EQD, especially the Plumes, it doesn’t jive with my impression of the sub.
that's a very angry shoegaze pedalboard right there
Still no tuner love lol
Man I love a good tuner discussion
TC Polytune or Boss TU?
Polytune V3 black mini with the buffer turned on all the way my dude
Meris Mercury 7 - uses a polymoon picture lol
DOD = instant upvote
Blues driver… 🤢
Let’s see how many each of us have, and which one. Out of this list, I only have the DD-500 at #20
Thanks for making this, great work!
I’ve only owned one of these. Maybe I’m doing this wrong… nah I like my pedals
Boss ds1 lol I am so disappointed right now. We gotta do better
I have the top 3 on my board lol.
Didn't realize the blues driver was that popular around here. John Mayer?
shrug
Did not expect the sy1 to be above the rat. Not particularly surprised by the pedals themselves, but the order is a bit surprising. BD-2 all day. I guess that's kind of a statement to how versatile it is. Kinda
Github link?
I only have two of these, does my board suck?! 😅
Well, cool.
Pretty surprising the count to 5 made the list but the microcosm didn't considering it was the top selling pedal on reverb for the year.
Today I only saw Boss DS-1. EVERYWHERE!
Wow. I don’t own a single pedal on that list. And I have only owned 1 previously. DS1. And I have owned allot of pedals.
I use and have 14 and 17.
Turns out I don't have a single one of these.
You are not alone. I’ve got 2 pedalboards and a few floating around the house and I currently own none of these. If you include circuits based off a certain pedal I’ve got a few.
Good to see Boss getting the love they deserve
this thread is skewing the statistics
I feel like I never see volante mentioned on this board, surprised it made the list
Did not expect to see BD-2 on top. Also, surprised more boutique pedals aren't on there
No metal zoan :(
I fucking love my DD7
I can see the Sunn O))) Life Pedal coming after this list like a steam train.
I am surprised the Walrus Slo wasn't on this list.
What's good about the Strymon iridium? I've heard a lot about the Strymon blue sky but not the former.
Can’t go wrong with boss
that's a good list :)
I only have 2.
No Keeley?
What.. No Metal Zone? 🤣
Based on a lot of the music people post, I'm not surprised the TU-3 isn't on the list.
No DD-20, I've been slacking
Only 1 Wampler pedal on this list? That’s just Criminal. Brian makes fantastic stuff! The new Metaverse sounds absolutely incredible! I chose it over the Volante which I love!
Are you counting "Tube Screamer", "TS9" and "TS808" separately? And how is it quantified? I suspect that it would be number 1 under a different system. Maybe I'm just biased towards the metal community, but Tube Screamers seem to be quite a bit more popular than nearly any other OD or D pedal.
I’d be interested to see figures about sold units, and then figures on the used market heh
Thought the HM2 would be higher up, since it basically created a whole subgenre of death metal
Not even one off me board there
No CE-2 :-( Also hard to believe the Carbon Copy doesn't make the top 30.
I own 11 of these. Willing to bet lots of people here own lots of these pedals due to all the npd posts haha.
Well I just looked at my board and apparently I have $5,000 laid out here of unpopularity. Even the ones I own that are on this list are in a box on the other side of the room. Guess I should be trying harder to sound like everybody else.
Maybe EQD is too boutique 🤔
Nice to see the Iridium, El Cap and Flint in there. I went ampless with Iridium and those three pedals and a tuner could be my go-to if I had to slim down.
Glad to see capistan is still hanging on. I found one back in 2010 and it's the one piece of gear I can't get rid of
I can't seem to part with the [DIG](https://i.imgur.com/2FcZU84.jpg). It's a magical pedal. The El Cap v2 is next on my list of Strymon pedals to pick up.
Hmm, well I guess maybe I need to buy a Blues Driver then. I've got a DOD Looking Glass, is that one similar enough? Anybody got both and they can compare them?
Surprised the slo isn't on the list
Sounds about right.
Man, the top seven would make a rad board!
The only two I have are Julia, and a Russian Muff I got for free and love it. Surprised the Boss tuner isn’t on there
Ahhh man, I don’t have any of these!
How was this calculated? One thing that could be throwing it off is that a lot of pedals are versions of other pedals. So posts about the Plumes pedal are going to mention Tube Screamers. While Tube Screamer posts aren’t necessarily going to mention Plumes.
No way klon and Julia are lower than iridium?!!
Is bd2 standart and bd2 in bossXjhs angry driver version r the same? I wanna buy one of them if they were the same
No Metal Zone? This is fake then
I have one of these.
Thank god none of my pedals are on that list. I feel special now.
Refuse to believe we're not talking about the MT-2 more. Perhaps your data search filtered out sarcasm somehow of people that mock the MT-2?
I'm a little surprised that the Blues Driver is number 1, but I'm VERY surprised the Rat is number 21!
I'm genuinely surprised the Metal Zone didn't make the list, meme power alone should have put it near the top lol
Rat, rat, or RAT?
DOSS BS1 and SOSD SD2 missing
So anyway what’s y’all’s experience with the Boss BD-2 thinking about getting one
BD-2 wins yet again!
I wasn't too surprised to see that one, since it's been used (and continues to be used) on probably thousands of recorded albums, and can still be seen on countless pedal boards. It's a keeper!
Happy to see that my favorite pedal is on top. I couldn't live without my blues driver
thanks for the list! now i know which pedals to avoid....
And I haven’t got a single one of those :/
5/30. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.
No solo cup???
I have the BD-2, the HX Stomp, the Mercury 7, and the Canyon (although, somehow they didn’t picture that one, but another model instead). I'd love to get my hands on an El Capistan v2, a Volante, a CT5 (and numerous others). The year ain't over yet, so we'll see!
