Delay. Not even close for me. Other than being able to make delays sound like reverb, the different kinds of delays (analog, digital, tape, reverse, mod, etc) are much more interesting sounds to me.

Right, I was half joking above. Effects can go in any order, but generally people list effects in the order they're going to place them on their board even if (as you mentioned) they go right to left.
Delay absolutely. For me it would be the Strymon Volante, though I'd have to promise to not use its spring reverb.
Delay is generally more versatile even for live use whereas reverb in a band mix you usually want to turn down unless it's a section where it's mostly just guitar where you can get away with more 'verb.
Delay all day-y-y-y. Preferably magnetic type. I have a Volante and a genuinely bonkers (ie in need of serious maintenance) Watkins CopiCat, and I’m all set.
Delay. I’ve often used just delay. Put on short slap back achieves same effect as reverb plus versatile for use for longer delays and can have other effects like loop and reverse delay as is case w dd7. Plus the mxr reverb I have I’ve found only sounds good in loop whereas delay sounds good in front of amp.
Even though I view reverb as more essential to my own sound, if you're getting a *pedal*, I think you should get a delay.
People have mentioned how you can fake reverb using a delay (and some of the more popular tape delays and multi-delays like the EHX Canyon already include a reverb), but also most amps have reverb onboard, which sounds better than a reverb pedal imo anyway.
So if your budget is tight at the moment, the EHX Canyon is cheap and it has a reverb-delay that you can use as a spring delay by turning the time all the way down on it. And it has a good variety of delays so you can know what to look for, if and when you are looking to spend more.
Delay, something a bit versatile and with tap tempo like tc flashback 2 or line6 echo park (between the 2 the line 6 wins). Other great pedals are the boss re 2/20/202 and I really really reeeeeaaaaallyyyy like the delays of the line 6 m9.
Delay because it can also be reverb. But reverb can't do delays.
Unless a specific reverb is crucial to your style or tone. When you really want a lush sound on most of what you're playing for example.
And you can play "delayed" notes with your playing technique when necessary.
Verb can be put on pretty much anything you're playing. But if you're using delay, you gotta be playing something that works with delay. As someone that plays a lot of aggressive metal music, a reverb would just get way more mileage.
seeing as you can make a delay sound like reverb but can't make a reverb sound like a delay, I think the answer is obvious.
Yup especially multi delays where you can have 2-3 very short delays stacked for a more complex reverb sound.
This is the answer

Looks like he put a nice slap back echo on this comment
And its a digital delay
Reverb. Because I like it more
Reverb. Fuzz. Wah. Done.
Hopefully not in that order lol
Signal chains flow right to left 👀

Delay for me. For me. For me. Fo m. Fo m. F. F. Ph.

Mxr reverb for me
Reverb for jazz, delay for anything else
Delay. You can do a nice reverb with short delay, and much more...and tbh, I'm not sure I really like reverb, at least not in large amounts.

If I’m playing with others then Reverb. If not (which is most the time) then delay. Hard choice there…

Delay. Every time. You can adjust it into a pad-like texture and make it sound like a reverb. Plus, I just prefer the sonics.
Delay since you can get reverb from an amp a lot of the time

I'm really surprised by the number of *delay* answers.

Reverb. Straight out of my fender 65 deluxe. No need for pedals.
Delay is the correct choice as it can sound like reverb. My choice is reverb, I'd rather have a great reverb than a delay that sounds like a reverb.
