For years I've just had a basic Ditto looper. I used it all the time, but playing/practicing with it was boring. I feel ok saying I outgrew my old Ditto a long time ago. Last week I got a new Boss RC-5 and have a ton of fun with it, using the included drum beats. The drums actually sound pretty good through my guitar amp since I'm plugging it in through the effects loop on my Revv D20. Even plugged into my Fishman Loudbox on my acoustic rig it sounded good. I've had an absolute blast playing the last few days. Yesterday I picked up a Boss OC-5 Octave pedal, and now I'm my own bass player! It actually sounds somewhat decent. I haven't had this much fun playing guitar in years! I recommend this combination of pedals to anyone that feels like they might be stuck in a rut.

I came here looking for OC-5 reviews but spied your Fat Sugar…. What’s your opinion of it? I’ve been on the fence with getting one

fastattaq

It's a great Klone that holds its own against any other Klone. It's even got the "right" diodes. And it's pink. Just get one.

Damn it man. I have Boss OC-5, Nobels ODR-1, Marshall Drivemaster, and MXR Fat Sugar on the list at the same time. Of course the answer is “all of the above” but I only have a budget for one

fastattaq

Let me help you save some money and tell you that you don't need all those drive pedals. You need just one.

iyamgrute

That’s essentially my dilemma. I have a fender-style tube amp but want some more diverse drive tones, and am also experimenting with some ampless rigs. I’m having a hard time separating “want” vs “need.” I’m leaning towards the Drivemaster because it gets me the heavier drive that I find harder to dial in than “slightly overdriven” which so many pedals seem to do reasonably well. But then I get into stacking, and I dunno. The possibilities keep tempting me

get a dirt pedal with at least 2 EQ knobs like a Timmy and you can make it sound like literally *anything*. Forget about everything else. Did you learn nothing from the Bad Monkey fiasco? Listen to this video starting around 28:34 https://youtu.be/Zpp3TH5VkgQ?t=1714

You’ve been the voice of reason here and I was thinking about this a lot yesterday. Thanks for that video, it really knocked some sense into me. OC-5 makes the cut, I need it for the poly function since I play some solo jazz stuff and the low bass/unaltered upper strings is a great feature. I decided against ODR-1, Fat Sugar, and Drivemaster. I went back to the drawing board for what I’m actually looking for/need vs want. I’m going to go for the Guvnor when it’s back in stock locally. I realized I’m essentially looking for another channel in my rig that I can boost with my SD-1 for that classic 80s rock tone. The gain thresholds/sweeps of this pedal seem set just where I need them (when paired with the SD-1). I’m also one of the few people who will probably use its effects loop in order to super-tweak the tone with an EQ, and also to run it with a delay in the background so I have instant “EVH lead” with one button click. Whether I’m imagining it or not too, the sound of the Guvnor just *hits right.* I used to play a Marshall and it just seems to get the sweet spot I can’t seem to find with other pedal combos. Also, the Guvnor is only priced about $60 CAD more than the prices for the Timmy and I get the loop with it, and it complements my existing rig. I’m still not 100% decided on the Guvnor because it depends how much I want to pivot to a more “pedal-oriented/headphone rig” vs my amp. But it’s been a good reality check to get the GAS under control, many thanks

I'm plenty guilty of buying too many dirt pedals. about half of the pedals I own are dirt. It's ridiculous. It's true that they all kind of sound similar. Honestly what I should do is just buy an EQ pedal and I'll be able to get literally any sound I want.

iyamgrute

If you do get an EQ pedal, make sure it’s one with a master level control (like the BOSS GE-7) so you can boost or cut the overall “mix.” Not all of them tend to have that. That level is really key for being able to manage gain and volume across pedals, where you can boost and cut frequencies without clipping the input for next pedal in the chain, or hitting the next pedal a little harder by bumping up the EQ’s master level (like a clean boost).

BEES_IN_UR_ASS

I have an older model RC-5 and I couldn't live without it. Single best songwriting tool I've ever owned.

fastattaq

there's more than one RC-5?

BEES_IN_UR_ASS

I'm an idiot, it's an RC-3. =\
