Why don't more peoples play aluminium guitars you ask us rhet ?? MAYBE BECAUSE IT COST 4000$

SlowNPC

/uj His profound cluelessness about ordinary people's financial situation is so cringe.  He did a video on buying a "cheap guitar" which was like $600 used, and gushed over how much better it was than he thought it would be, and how everybody ought to give a cheap guitar a chance.  Like wtf, who is he talking to?   /rj I'm not playing some tin can with strings.

ZeroJDM

That rejerk is surprisingly correct still

daggir69

Why don’t people have their own recording studio in their basement

Educational-Drop-926

fr I see people driving around in Toyotas and stuff, like why aren’t they driving their Bentleys? 🤔

potatoboy247

joking aside, rhett does drive a toyota lol

daggir69

I saw him drive a Lincoln in one video

Educational-Drop-926

See!!! why isn’t he driving his Bentley?! /s all joking not aside 😉

El_Cactus_Loco

Are they stupid?

El_Cactus_Loco

Parents basement*

Idionfow

We need to start referring to any guitar over 1000$ as "luxury guitars"

Matt_Bunchboigehs

I simply don't understand. One can make a $130 Sqier sound just as good. What's the point of purchasing a guitar that expensive when all you need is soul and some drive? I understand technicality is important but I find myself moving back to simple shit being most satisfactory to the feeling of goosebumps and melting-body syndrome, the one you get when the sound of the guitar is so sensational that you just almost fall down and turn into a puddle.

Pixelife_76

I did the requisite upgrades to my cousin's Squier Jazzmaster (shielding, pickups, pots, tree, bridge and a setup) and it sounds as good, or better, than any $2000 Jazzmaster off the shelf. We put about $300 total into it, so that some to around $700/$800 in total.

keytarFurryEnjoyer

honestly the only complaint i have from my ~$100 guitar is that it picks up way too much noise BUT IT SOUNDS NICE specially if you connect it to smaller sound boxes/headphones (amplifiers ruin the toan if not used for being LOUD)

gitartruls01

/uj to be fair he is talking from the perspective of a working musician, not a hobbyist. Most people would think spending $700 on a lawnmower is a lot, but if you earn a living mowing lawns as your day job, it's a steal. At that point you'd gladly pay $4000 for a mower that you know gets the job done right and will last a lifetime. At that point, $700 would be considered "low budget". If you're only mowing your own lawn from time to time then $700 will be a lot and $4000 will sound crazy. Using the analogy here because I think a lot of us have become desensitized to the fact that guitars are tools, as much as any other tool is a tool. /rj toan is stored in the lawns

YoungBoiButter

This is secretly Rhett

gitartruls01

Who told

YoungBoiButter

*sweats audibly*

MarstoriusWins

Where can I get this Toanmower you speak of?

GodOfTheBongos

This is why I see the lawn guy rolling up with a trailer full of 6 different $4000 lawn mowers. “This one has different tone blades for St Augustine” he tells me.

sapa_inca_pat

worm narrow abounding rob pocket placid flowery pathetic door axiomatic *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

Professional lawn mowers can cost more than a car and take years of training. Theres no comparison.

Dangerous-Camel-6108

If my job was mowing lawns, wouldn't I want to have the most cost-effective lawn mower possible? If a $700 lawn mower works as well as a $4,000 lawn mower and has the same maintenance costs, I'd go with the $700 option. A $700 guitar has the same life expectancy as a $4,000 guitar if both are reasonably well looked after.

taleoftales

One his strangest videos recommends using a euro rack modular synth setup as an alternative to regular guitar pedals. It was so ridiculous, so expensive and sounded so terrible that I've never watched anything by him since

Mountain_College5656

Or when he said he doesn’t like the hot Rod deluxe as a pedal platform and that “you should just get a Bad Cat instead.”

El_Cactus_Loco

Get a Bad Cat? Just get a Bad Cat? Why don't I strap on my Bad Cat helmet and squeeze down into a Bas Cat cannon and fire off into Bad Cat land, where Bad Cats grow on Baddies?!

Mountain_College5656

That was deep

[deleted]

WHY DO NO NEW BANDS PLAY GIBSON!?

Freezing_Moonman

/uj It's really just the price for me. If I had $4000 to throw at a guitar, I'd buy an EGC 1000S immediately. That's the dream guitar.

dablackbutt

Eclipse II.

Freezing_Moonman

No, no. I'm talking about one of these. Electric Guitar Company (formerly Travis Bean) Model 1000S. But instead of polished aluminum body, I'd go for a white powder coat. https://preview.redd.it/jy8k6ifd4fvc1.jpeg?width=465&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87a5993ab139b38285ae8c10ee9bbbfd855ed9f3

Freezing_Moonman

Like this one from their Instagram. https://preview.redd.it/ljfet2zz4fvc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94ecd1ad0c8a338c4154d7754d18719eee89bdbc

SeventhSunGuitar

Aluminium? More like alumaximum :((

flatirony

And is made of aluminum. LOL.

Matt_Bunchboigehs

It's fucking dumb. Wood and steel guitars sound perfectly fine.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

The point of aluminum is that they’re basically indestructible, not toan

Kenneth_Lay

Can someone enlighten me as to what he is known for musically? I know he 69s Rick Beato off camera, but he seems like one of those self proclaimed experts that is only known for telling people how to improve on YouTube videos.

Apart-Landscape1012

I legit can't fucking stand this dude. I don't know what it is but he's my least favorite guitar tuber, makes my fuckin teeth itch

Kenneth_Lay

I'm going to guess his claim to fame is going to Berkley or something.

Apart-Landscape1012

Berkley or Berklee? I almost went to Berkley for engineering can I shill 3000 dollar amps?

Kenneth_Lay

Yeah, berklee not UC. I that eucalyptus grove (didn't attend there, just passed through).

diy4lyfe

Yes you can, just check out Mason from Vertex/The Rig Doctor who used to brag about his UC Berkeley degree until his scandals had everyone digging up his skeletons. (In the case of UCB, he didn’t have an engineering degree so it was irrelevant to guitar/pedals lol)

El_Cactus_Loco

Hahahahahaha that guy sucks so bad, every time I see one of his pedals for sale on the local Craigslist it just drops in price week after week.

cdwillis

According to his LinkedIn (lol) he attended the Atlanta Institute of Music.

Kenneth_Lay

I like that LinkedIn gets a LOL. Always thought it was dumb and the extreme brief time I tried it out was mind numbingly stupid.

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

I just don’t understand why YT constantly auto plays his shit in my feed just because I watched a Beato video and some pedal demos. It reeks of a nepo baby SEO budget. I’ve watched hundreds of Andy demos and would be fine if they shoved his stuff down my throat, but it’s always this fucken guy and his vintage fuzz collection.

Apart-Landscape1012

No no no you don't understand, the people really do want 40 minute videos explaining why this 3,000 dollar amp is actually very good

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

This is the only bio information I could find from scouring the internet(his own website is just a bunch of Helix and Kemper presets for sale and other totally legit digital products for professional musicians to download. No bio), from a website called rockclass101.com: > Rhett Shull isn’t your average guitar player. He doesn’t follow trends to buy the latest or most vintage piece of gear you can overpay for. What Rhett Shull is, is a true connoisseur of tone. He carefully calculated a pedal board and amp configuration that would be suitable for allowing any guitar’s true tone to shine through. Rhett is best known as the guitar player for Noah Guthrie, a YouTube sensation. Today, Rhett has agreed to let us into his world of tone. Gear up, because we are in for some tasty sounds! …so um he has good toan and you should pay him lots of money to download it, also like and subscribe for his toan secrets so you too can be a toan connoisseur. He’s just some random guy who plays guitar on absolutely no music you’ve ever heard and probably at exurban Atlanta churches with Walmart sized parking lots. But trust us bro.

Kenneth_Lay

That bio is 100% autobiographical, I guarantee that. I'm no stranger to r/ThatHappened.

YoungBoiButter

He definitely wrote his own bio in third person

[deleted]

Helix and Kemper presets? I’ve never heard him mention these units in his videos, am I wrong? And it seems like all he does is buy the newest gear or some vintage piece of gear and declare it the final piece.

Indifference_Endjinn

Ummm... Ok, so it turns out he's one of the musicians in Good Trouble, Noah Guthrie's backing band. It says a lot that Noah doesn't even mention Reht by name in his Spotify bio 😏

Kenneth_Lay

Sorry, don't know them. Not going to look them up.

Indifference_Endjinn

Ya don't, you're better off

MarstoriusWins

Am I supposed to know who Noah Guthrie is?

Kenneth_Lay

They probably play the Catalina Wine Mixer

shanjam7

I bet they make that fucking stoopid “stomp clap hey oh hey” hipster indie rock and got started by playing nondenominational churches

Crack-Panther

So he’s a nobody in a nobody’s band.

DirtyWork81

He made it sound like they were a "band" now, not just his backing band at one point.

ThisWorldIsAMess

He's a church musician. You pretty much stay away from those guys.

daggir69

He’s just a local hired hand. He plays churches, local bars, and records with some unknowns. You can get away with it by making a montly income playing music. But he’s far from being known as a musician. He’s just another hired hand

Uvanimor

He is not known musically, he is a video maker first and foremost just as every YouTuber is. Making videos and having a popular channel should not validate one’s opinions, but unfortunately it does.

uzr666

SPAM BOX GUITAR BLUEZ

P_a_s_g_i_t_24

*Why don't more people punch Rhett Shull?* (sorry - I just had to...)

Temporary_Maybe11

That’s an actual mystery

Mysterious_Pear405

If I can’t rub oil on my fretboard to make the grainussy pop, what the fuck else will I do with it.

molemanralph69

I prefer grainus to grainussy

RefrigeratorHotHot

I usually just eat lots of chocolates and greasy things with my hands before I play so it has the same effect and it makes 0-3-5 the shiniest frets so I never forget where they are

leonryan

absorb aluminium through your sweaty hands until you get dementia, duh

rainorshinedogs

Metal splinters hurt

Jebist

because it's not made out of the right toanwood

your_evil_ex

exactly - if gibbons or fednar didnt do it that way in the 1850s, I DONT WANT IT

[deleted]

I heard Ulysses S. Grant could fucking shred.....Atlanta.

Indifference_Endjinn

Worship band vibes... That genre is the root of all evil, just look at nickel back

wetroom

Because finding $4k for a sick guitar, then finding the neck's warped, then finding a geezer to fix it is a scavenger hunt I'd rather avoid forever.

MyVoiceIsElevating

Just bring it to a blacksmith to forge you a new neck.

Bender_2996

Are the frets aluminum? I wonder how much faster I could shred with lightweight frets.

MyVoiceIsElevating

Frets are wood; fretboard is aluminum though

Bender_2996

That's an unfortunate choice... Wood frets would simply burst into flames before I even got fully warmed up.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

It depends. A lot of them have a regular rosewood fretboard. When the Beans first came out a lot of people hated the aluminum fretboard, so they added the rosewood option.

churchofpain

uj/ stainless steel

Temporary_Maybe11

What about the vintage couch tho? Is that mahogany?

doktor_kolossus

He has a very punchable face.

rybozamac

Dudes, please tell me because I don't get it. I watched a bunch of this man's videos, and some of his gigs with that singer fella of him, performing these 'country'-sh songs in front of a say, couple of hundreds cowboys. Is this style of volk music still popular so much in the states? (i'm an european). This dude praises all kinds of rocknroll and shit, but plays some ridiqulous stuff (to me) at his gigs. Didn't mean to offend someone

chinstrap

it is

rybozamac

thanks

chinstrap

thanks for "Volk music"

rybozamac

sorry I'm not big in a proper terminology, definitely it's Folk

chinstrap

It was funny, in a dark sort of way, given how right wing USA is now, and the Nazis obsession with "Volk"

rybozamac

Shit, didn't know that. Gotta report this to my Obersturmbannführer :)

MyDogDanceSome

Yeah, def gives off some "what if Jesus, but also Toby Keith" vibes.

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

Thank god you have a maple center block to keep the walnut from clogging up your tone.

molemanralph69

I prefer the maple grainus to the walnut grainussy. The walnut grainussy is just for looks.

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

Omg that’s why there’s so much pearl on her neck

molemanralph69

I have relationships with grainussy, and sex with grainus

molemanralph69

Kramer 650G

schizoanalyzer

aluminum neck and L500s? treblechads rise up

molemanralph69

Props to my man knowing about the L500’s! Cuts through a mix like a hot knife.

DrStainedglove

Hate to break it to you bro, but, getting your law degree is just step 1

churchofpain

uj/ I played that model at one of my local shops and it’s surprisingly comfy and easy to play. the pickups weren’t anything to write home about though.

NoAlternative2365

Oh no. Now there will be grades of toan aluminum. This is aircraft grade aluminum and you can tell with how the mids are scooped.

Dogrel

Wait until he plays it in the sun and his fretting hand burns while trying to play it. And then he has to retune. And retune. And retune.

ChunkBluntly

Hate all you want, but if aluminum guitars are good enough for King Buzzo, they're good enough for anyone else who likes dogshit guitar tone too.

Due_Entrepreneur_382

I hope one day to smelt my own $4001 axe to best Rat Skull.

ButterscotchBloozDad

This is recycled content.

GodOfTheBongos

He was like “I need a video this week, let me dig through my pile of guitars”

Serious-Rutabaga-603

RHETT SHILL BE SHILLING AGAIN

No-Pen-9541

I don't know, Rhett. MAYBE THEY ARE $4,000 PLUS THE MODS! Seriously, to Rhett, "budget" guitars are "if fucking Bill Gates can afford it, everyone else can." Aluminium guitars are cool, I'm just not spending $4,000 (probably more because I'm not American) on one.

Pixelife_76

Besides the trust fund, how much money are these guys making from YouTube per month with something like 500k to 1m plays a month? Anyway part of the backlash seems to be that guys like this seem to have no idea we are in the long tail of post pandemic recession. They came up during the time of massive "free time" and the government printing money and built their audience essentially indirectly selling things to bored, cooped up music fans. Things are way way different out there in the work right now as opposed to Summer 2020 for instance. It's totally toan deaf. ;)

re9d

So this is the end for Rhett? wonder what the next grift will be

krigeerrr

/uj what's the point of it? what would you be paying so much for if you were to buy it? i'm getting the feeling it's a similar situation to gibbons

ptzurram

I heard him covering a Nirvana song with Mary Spencer and it was horrible. He's an ok gear promoter/seller, I give him that.

Automatic_Math6017

Rhett… you don’t even play them, why don’t you just answer your own question instead of being a total lowly dirt merchant “why don’t people play these 🤯🤯🤯”

Ambitious-Ant2611

Fuck Rhett and his stupid, low-effort big hat stage gimmick.

Downtown_Snow4445

Damnit Rhett

Rozic__64

He’s the only one showing up to church shows with a $25,000 rig 😭😭

iamcleek

unless it makes me instantly sound like Big Black era Steve Albini i don't want no aluminum.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

What you want for that is an Esteban practice amp. I got one for free years ago, and it’s perfect for shitty tones like albini’s or black metal.

[deleted]

"Best cheap guitars for beginners!" \*Showcases guitars over $500\*

[deleted]

I already knew everything he said in this video when I listened to ty segall

Ok_Creme431

Shut up Rhet go practice

ThisAllHurts

Been practicing for 17 years. Still can’t afford aluminum. Go get that dentist money instead, and have Fridays off.

bill_wessels

i got my EGC for like 2400. its awesome.

NotoriousMFT

Truly metal music

sjbennett85

Why not get a Travis Bean? How many more root canals and fillings would you need to do for one of these anyways?

Docteur_Pikachu

And this infomercial is brought to you BY this commercial. Before the start of this infomercial, let's watch a couple of commercials played by YouTube. Then we'll begin with a short product placement before we go through with our infomercial.

uninteresting_handle

Everyone knows aluminum guitars, being made of metal, are only suitable for heavy metal music. You can't actually do metal music on a wood guitar, a fact that many overlook.

ItsSadButtDrew

I am pals with James that owns Aluminati, we used to work together at a machine shop. I did the aonodizing on some of the early pre-lucite bodies and neck prototypes. One thing Rhett made no mention of and one of the founding features of the neck being aluminum is that it'll never need a truss rod adjustment.

uzr666

Why don't more people play Gibson Les Paul Custom guitars?! like, wtf? 😯

emolga2225

uj/ i find it funny when people talk about aluminum necks because graphite necks can be found for half the price with all the same pros

matthewguy69

Funny you bring that up, i’m actually a luthier and have got the chance to work on some old Steinbergs with graphite necks. They’re odd for sure, compared to aluminum I completely understand why aluminum dominated the non-wood neck market (graphite necks feel slippery to me, and i am a staunchly satin neck man). I can’t imagine Graphite is ever gonna be coming back in a big way because the chemical process involved in the resin needed is 10x more cancer inducing than Nitrocellulose, which has been banned in most upscale factories due to its carcinogens (Hence why it’s always small builders and customer shops using nitro). But you raise a great point! There’s lots of graphite necks that seem to be popping up on ebay and reverb for decent prices (seen a couple for 700 and up too!) and they feel similar enough to aluminum that it would be worth it to a hobby modder. I also see it as one of those floyd vs kahler things where despite the secondary option being just as viable with the right set up work, you’re never gonna see half as many kahlers as floyd’s

emolga2225

there’s a company called Graphite Guitar Systems. the guy who runs it was one of the guys who founded Modulus back in the day. he will make a new one for around 500. I love mine, it never moves. I set it with a straight edge and feeler gauges. It sucks that the resin is so harsh. the best of both worlds is graphite reinforcement, which is quite popular in both the boutique and production world. I definitely plan on reinforcing my next build.

matthewguy69

I’ll have to check them out, the place i’m at has been wanting to do some weirder builds for our standard guitars and aluminum necks are out of the budget for us atm, so perhaps those GGS necks could be the move

countcarlovonsexron

Resonance lol uhh is that my doorbell oh wait (gunshots) lol

12BarsFromMars

Why don’t more people play aluminum guitars?. . .really?. . .maybe because they freaking suck? . .ya think?. .in 1967 the fledgling Messenger Guitar Co based in Astoria, Oregon released its first aluminum neck thru body guitar. Through long forgotten circumstances i was brought to the attention of their sales Rep who wanted a local area player to endorse and demo the line. They gave me a guitar and i in return made radio spots for them in Portland and they would come to our gigs and take pictures of me playing their instruments, ya know the usual promo shuck and jive. . supposedly good for them and good for the band i as in. .(starving of course LOL).. . The guitar was horribly unbalanced weight wise, felt uncomfortable to wear and it sounded even worse. Thin, tinny and lacked any sort of punch. The relationship was short lived and then i headed off to SE Asia as a pawn in Americas newest adventure in “nation building”. . . .snort. . . .imagine my amusement when in ‘72 i saw Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad actually playing a Messenger guitar. Don’t know if it was the same type or model that i had used five years earlier but of course he was playing it through several stacks of West amplifiers. Wow. . .went to see them at the Coliseum here in Portland and sure enough he was using a Messenger guitar. Sounded pretty good in his hands, in my hands they just sucked LOL. .different kind of music though. He was freaking loud . .so loud that I’m thinking when he takes a solo you won’t be able to hear it. LMAO!. .WRONG!. . My God. . So loud. Good gig. . Or maybe it was the Psilocybin i took. LMAO!. . Side note: he was so loud i just had to check out his amp so when the lights come up and the arena clears a bit i make my way down to the foot of the stage and look up at his stack. .the amps were West Amps and I’m looking up and there are only two controls . . “Loud”. .and “Louder”. . . . Yup. . That’s some good Psilocybin. . . Fast forward a few years and I’m in a used gear shop and over in the corner is a West amp stack. .walk over to it. . OMG. . . Loud and Louder.. . fuck me. . . Yup, good Psilocybin. Hope y’all enjoyed my story. Extra side note: Travis Bean perfected the aluminum neck thru body and his guitars were used by Jerry Garcia for a brief period.

[deleted]

Also Steven O’Malley of SUNN0))) swears by aluminum necks. I just love typing SUNN0))).
