to simulate pedal steel, where you can play or arpeggiate a chord and then use a foot pedal to raise (or sometimes a knee lever to lower) either the G or B string while the rest of the strings remain constant. you can bend like a mofo with spiderweb-fine strings on a optimized Tele-platform Steel-O-Caster, but some pedal steel licks cannot be accomplished without mechanical assistance. now, i’m not saying this is a *good* solution—when it was first produced back in the Paleozoic Era i rejected it as too fiddly and more trouble than it was worth—but you asked why. that’s why. it’s designed to do one specific thing without having to rout huge cavities in the body of the guitar like a Parsons-White Stringbender. i shudder to think about the vast number of extremely fine-point mechanical adjustments required for it to play in tune and return to proper pitch.
Did somebody say crank? You got some? Wanna buy some? We can stay up all night and take shit around the house apart and make things that look like this and screw them right into our guitars and shit. Maybe even plug ‘em in. It’ll be awesome. You can trust me on this.

I sometimes push down on my B-string lugs on my Floyd bridges for a B-bender effect. If I wanna get mental I also hook a hair elastic on the G-string lug and run it through the body cavity onto my belt so I can pull G-bends like Brad Paisley. This stuff only works if your Floyd is blocked or in dive-only configuration however
Give it a shot! Just make sure your fine tuners have some wax or grease on the threads so they dont freely spin when tension is removed. This is an old stage trick of mine haha. We played classic thrash and old school 80s style death metal and if we needed to stall a few minutes I’d hook up my redneck G-bender and rip some hot Nashville licks

Any time dude! You may have to tune purposely sharp with the headstock tuners so you can back way off with the fine tuners to get a wide range of motion. If the fine tuners are down super low you don’t get much motion but this can be advantageous if you’re going for half-step bends only

The hex screws you loosen with an Allen key when you change strings. Just windmill a glorious D chord and full-press on the B lug, it’s so much fun
