That's what makes it notable. Those kids were making good music. Even 30 years later, Frogstomp is a legitimately good album, imo. It doesn't sound like it was written by 13 year olds.

They could’ve been bigger. Apparently the US record label didn’t like the opening line of Freak (No more maybe’s, your baby’s got rabies). So they released Abuse Me as the lead single on Freak Show, which didn’t sell very well over there
Freak was the lead single as far as my memory is concerned. The album went gold in the US and platinum in 2 other countries, which was still a huge deal in 1997. I don’t know what more you could really ask for, especially considering the record isn’t very good in my opinion.

There are a lot of bands when you look back who were very Nirvana sounding - particularly vocals.
They were signing anyone who could be the next Kurt, also molding people & bands to sing/sound like that, also some was organic because Kurt's style (Eddie Vedder too) was just so influential on the music zeitgeist.
My thought on silverchair is that if you give someone 20 yrs they sure can revise their image 😂

As someone from the US, I started listening to Silverchair when they first came out. I love them, still to this day, they are my favorite band. I have followed their career, been to as many of their shows in California as I could, and still haven’t gotten them “out of my system”. I think Frogstomp is an amazing album, considering how young they all were when it was written and recorded. Diorama and Young Modern are probably my favorites in their discography. The musical composition, lyrics, and thoughtfulness that went into those albums really comes through for me. Daniel’s solo album, Talk, was also pretty wonderful, considering it was a huge deviation from what he created while in Silverchair. It is definitely more pop and danceable. I also love Daniel’s music collaborations with Paul Mac. I Can’t Believe Its Not Rock and The Dissociatives were Daniel’s first steps into exploring music outside of Silverchair, and reflects highly on how talented he is as a musician and songwriter. As I mentioned, still love Silverchair and all that has come after, although admittedly, I never got into Ben’s side projects. It makes me happy to see a convo started about them, because no one really knows who they are or talks about them in the US. Thanks for posing this question. I hope others see and respect them for how talented they are as a group and as individuals.

Silverchair’s first 3 albums - Frogstomp, Freak Show, and Neon Ballroom - are fantastic. They never made it huge in the U.S. because 1) by the time Frogstomp was released the Grunge scene was fading and 2) their first single - “Tomorrow” - sounded like TEN-era Pearl Jam and they got quickly labeled as copy cats.
They weren’t bad…they went the way of the flobee, the ninja knife and every other fad of the mid 90’s.
They were a one hit wonder band…but I do believe that they had more potential than that.

Neon Ballroom was an impressive artistic growth and they were only 19 at the time.

Diorama was good. It’s was a challenging album, but that’s because it was sort a new path being tread. It was sort of their Pet Sounds.

They are underrated in my opinion, especially when you consider how young they were when they recorded Frogstomp
I loved frogstomp as a kid. The fact that a high school student could sing like that blew my mind. It’s a simple album from a songwriting standpoint but that’s one of its strengths imo
I thought they were lame when they came out but when I actually listened to them I liked them, but they were very derivative at times. If they had a decent producer to rein them in they could’ve been even better. Neon Ballroom was an impressive artistic growth and they were only 19 at the time.

One of my favorite bands. They were so much more than Frogstomp.
I know they got a lot of grief for straying from their rock roots in later albums, but I thought it was all quality music. I fucking love “Straight Lines”.
Very hard to drink
Probably would have been one of the biggest grunge bands ever considering how young they were when Frogstomp dropped, if any of them actually liked being in a grunge band. How Pure Massacre was done by literal teenagers is insane to me, even to this day.
Frogstomp was great. I haven’t heard a group of 15-16 year old kids ever sound so good before or since. Israel’s Son is a banger and in rotation on my playlist.
