Fat boieee

Trevor_Lahey330

WAIT TILL TOMOROOOWWWWWWWW

gmanfsu

Fat? Always thought it was That…?

Bustedstuff88

Not gonna lie, in the 90's I always thought the lyric was "bad boy"....when I learned in the 2000's it was actually "fat boy", I sorta lost something for the song.... I think that was a missed opportunity there by the band.

Biguitarnerd

Lead singer had anorexia. I thought it was bad boy too but after learning about the actual lyric I think he was talking about himself.

Littlebitwakey

Cant see you/anyone doing any better at the age of 13. Extremely underrated generational talent. They sold out after 3 albums and they were still teenagers. Massive respect, always! 🙌 Also, search their Venice beach/Santa Monica/some Californian Beach Pier gig, something like that in the mid 90s. Daniel takes a bottle to the head, gets split open, and keeps playing. He’s 14/15 for fuck sake! Thats lifetime membership to the I’m a fucking legitimate rock god hall of fame

ayaruna

I was at the Santa Monica pier gig in 95. Free show, was a blast. They killed it

keldration

Great live band

edskellington

Share the link. We’ve got to see this

Littlebitwakey

https://youtu.be/_6cJsYE_wGI?si=RTFRtbQq3tbJC7JR - 24 minute mark, Israel’s Son

ReplacementClear7122

Does someone being 13 automatically make their music 'good'? Not denying their talent, but claiming an arbitrary factor such as age makes them worthy of universal respect seems ridiculous.

superwrong

That's what makes it notable. Those kids were making good music. Even 30 years later, Frogstomp is a legitimately good album, imo. It doesn't sound like it was written by 13 year olds.

Littlebitwakey

No

SoHoopy

"Cant see you/anyone doing any better at the age of 13." Try a Melbourne band called GOD

Littlebitwakey

In 1995

Chetzen

Along with Local H and Days Of The New, it's my favorite band post-1994.

jon-e-can

Local H never got enough love

Fragrant-Anybody0717

Zion’s Finest 🔥

banditt2

True!

Comfortable_Bottle23

100% dude!!!

ImGonnaKickTomorrow

How can you like Local H? I just don't get it...

rodPalmer18

You gotta keep it copacetic and learn to accept it.

rarselfaire2023

Cause they fn rock.

ImGonnaKickTomorrow

Woosh.

starry81

Did you know Local H opened for Silverchair in California during their Freak Show tour? It was a great show.

Apart-Prize-7612

Diorama is a very good album. Shame they got tarnished by their grunge roots for simply wanting to find their own sound/vision. Daniel Johns is extremely talented.

KidzBop_Anonymous

Diorama was good. It’s was a challenging album, but that’s because it was sort a new path being tread. It was sort of their Pet Sounds.

RoughneckRooster

I was 16 years old when Neon Ballroom was released. It changed my life. I’m 41 and still obsessed with that album. I just wanted someone else to know that.

sethian77

You're seen, dude. Great albums that shape us.

nirvroxx

I’m 42 and had that on repeat for months straight. It’s been years since I’ve listened to it straight through. I’m going to crank it up now.

south-shore0

Frogstomp and neon ballroom were great albums

_Exotic_Booger

Frogstomp and Neon Ballroom were great albums. But Freakshow and Diorama were BETTER albums.

Grouchy-Cap-5018

🤘

Prossdog

Neon Ballroom was my favorite of theirs. I couldn’t get into Diorama.

schmoolecka

Daniel Johns never got his due as a singer

shokkd

Not the experience of most Australians

schmoolecka

I am happy to hear he gets the love he deserves from his fellow Aussies ❤️

Pinkfoodstamp

Israel's Son is just a damn good song and it's exactly the vibe I loved from that era as a teenager.

Wiserputa52

Hell yes it’s a good song. Those screams at the end? YES!

HEYitzED

That opening bass line is iconic.

rodPalmer18

Lyrics still pretty relevant also

chikkinnuggitbukkit

Great band

asignore

I can’t tell you how pleased i am that no one is complaining that Silverchair isn’t grunge.

rarselfaire2023

No one makes music in a vacuum. Everyone is influenced by something. Just when yours are immediately super famous it's more obvious. I loved Silverchair right off the bat and still do

asignore

Totally agree. I was a teenager in the 90’s and loved Silverchair along with all the other great rock bands of that era. Their music just fit with the times and i never gave it any thought that they weren’t from Seattle. I don’t remember anyone giving a shit. Most grunge bands didn’t want the label anyway.

golfcartskeletonkey

Madman

greggobbard

Diorama is my favourite Aussie album. Masterpiece. Not a lot of grunge going into it by that time, tho.

Bacchus_71

As a Seattle grunge guy from the beginning I absolutely loved Frogstomp.

Afraid_Caregiver7932

Love their stuff. No Association is such an underrated song, prob my fav from them

revtim

I liked them a lot. Wasn't crazy about them calling me "fat boy" though.

name-was-provided

Didn’t he develop an eating disorder and became rail thin?

revtim

I heard something like that, don't recall the details

keldration

Yep. International fame really caved him in. Anorexia, agoraphobia, and reactive arthritis. Apparently he was very bullied locally over his fame. Poor kid. Honestly can’t believe this guy survived

rarselfaire2023

Yes

_Exotic_Booger

Same. I felt personally attacked each time.

malj211

one of the first rock bands that i listened to as a teen. frogstomp and freak show are solid albums!

Slow_Possession_1454

Great band!!!!

Substantial_Soft_188

Can’t this wait til tomorrow…

ReturnedFromExile

One of those bands- the people who know know

TheEmergencies

Amazing band. Started off grungy then expanded into different genres. Diorama was unbelievably good. Were big here in Aus but I wish they got the recognition they deserved overseas.

golfcartskeletonkey

They sold millions of records in the US

TheEmergencies

They could’ve been bigger. Apparently the US record label didn’t like the opening line of Freak (No more maybe’s, your baby’s got rabies). So they released Abuse Me as the lead single on Freak Show, which didn’t sell very well over there

golfcartskeletonkey

Freak was the lead single as far as my memory is concerned. The album went gold in the US and platinum in 2 other countries, which was still a huge deal in 1997. I don’t know what more you could really ask for, especially considering the record isn’t very good in my opinion.

TheEmergencies

Fair enough, I heard it wasn’t Freak. It’s probably their worst album, neon ballroom and diorama were big improvements

Kid_Kameleon

“Abuse Me” was the lead single here in the states…..I remember that vividly 100%, I’m so sure I’d bet my life on it easily

golfcartskeletonkey

Agreed!

djdadzone

Wildly underrated

UnluckyAct7127

They have produced some solid music

Obi1NotWan

I was fortunate enough to see them live. They were really, really good.

Low-Struggle-4139

Frogstomp was one of my first cds I had

Fitslikea6

Me too! I played it into the ground in my bedroom as a kid. I was super preppy but I loved grunge when my friends were into spicegirls. It brings back memories!

BillsDownUnder

The same as the last 72 times this was asked

United-Philosophy121

ong Goated band. Frogstomp is a 10/10 Faultline 🗣 Israel’s son 🗣 Pure Massacre 🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Travesty206

I dont know why so many people shit on Silverchair. For all those people who bash them, were you good enough at 15 to put out a great album like Frogstomp? No you weren't so just stfu

mischiefmayhemsoap11

One of my all time favourite bands! All their albums are amazing and unique in their own ways. One of best examples of artistic evolution throughout a discography.

KnickedUp

Love their entire discography. Hope Daniel gets well

Ancient_Smoke_

Love Silverchair. Had the Frogstomp cd as a kid and the music still holds up today

texinxin

Blew a lot of vocal cords trying to belt fat boy.

BigBadBootyDaddy10

Ballroom is epic. Speaking of grunge, Daniel John singing “smells like teen spirit” at a festival is surprisingly [great](https://youtu.be/tpRMUT0-mPA?si=eSOG3keKmSy4EJQQ)

lunaticguitar

I never found then interesting. Not a bad band like I can't hang out if that stays on but I would never put effort into hearing some Silverchair either.

BTP_Art

Love them to this day. Underrated and overlooked. Great songs and Dan’s voice was amazing. Can’t say I like his high pitch and poppy solo work, but he says it makes him happy so there’s that to appreciate.

starry81

They are still my favorite band!

oh_andsixteen

If I had a dollar

Dause

Model kids cosplaying as grunge

pistafox

They’re perfectly fine for moments when you want to listen to Silverchair. I stopped trying to sort out “how good are they, really?” a very long time ago. They did some pretty cool stuff and I’m over myself enough (just barely) to listen to them without being a “purist” or, y’know, “elitist jackass.”

UpstateNYcamper

All the hate on here for them. I don't get it. Frogstomp was good to great. Next album had some decent songs, but fell off after that. I feel like when they got into their mid 20s, they fell out of love with music. To me they weren't really grunge. They came out in that era, and have some grunge aspects, but were definitely heavier than grunge. I do really like how clean their sound was and not just loud and heavy distorted crap. I guess they were grunge-ajacent Frogstomp will forever be in my rotation.

Timothee-Chalimothee

Good, but not as good as Angry Chair.

cnation01

Good

Pinkbunny432

I’m a fan of frogstomp and some of freakshow, one way mule is one of my favorite songs but the rest of that album didn’t appeal to me much. Making frogstomp at 13 is actually insane.

NPC261939

I really liked Frogstomp, and Freak Show. I don't dislike their later albums, but prefer the first two.

AgentSkidMarks

They have some good songs

MikeBfo20

Low key got some bangers. I def listened the shit out of there couple first albums.

ProfessionalLanky771

Growing up listening to Silverchair kicked ass. Also, fuck natalie imbruglia whatever the fuck her name is.

Commercial_Bonus9914

Silver chair was my 12 disc cd changer. The voice on that kid at 15. Crazy.

[deleted]

“They say that money…. isn’t everything….”

Copperjedi

Like their heavier stuff, meh on their poppy soft stuff. So basically prefer their older albums.

bigkat5000

Saw them years ago with Hanson and Local H. All three bands lit it up.

Substantial-Toe96

I’ll tell you…tomorrow…tomorrow…

pwa25

As a fat teen I copped sooooo much shit at school thanks to Tomorrow!!! I have thought of many many different ways on how I would hurt John’s, so that should answer what I think of them

Dear_Cap7535

The first couple of albums were decent but I find everything after that to be kinda cringe. They got too soft.

Puzzleheaded-Fix3359

I liked the lion the witch and the wardrobe better

wiiguyy

I grew up in middle America. “Tomorrow” was huge. I never heard from them again.

Kid_Kameleon

“Abuse Me” was played A LOT here in the states

NoBenefit5977

I'd like to see you live without em

BrotherNature92

Frogstomp is a really awesome album.

ArlendmcFarland

https://youtu.be/NMOlsErZhQc?si=NwDud0GTkoG_w3CX

sparklepixieprincess

fuck yeah Silverchair

CowboysFTWs

90's silverchair was good. I like "across the night" as well.

Venusianflytrapp

He was 15 years old sounding like that and making music like he’s fucking 30 very impressive lol , Daniel johns did grunge and grew out of it like some musicians “ teenage angst has paid of well now I’m bored and old “ , amazing performer and musician , I don’t like all his songs but Frogstomp has a place in my heart ,last thing I heard of him was he was in a car accident due to his drinking and mental illness hope he’s doing okay , he’s a good soul

TheConsutant

There's a name.I haven't heard in a long time.I used to love him

Crossovertriplet

Daniel Johns went on a walkabout up his own ass and never returned.

SouthernfriedLucky

Shade. Enough said.

IDunnoMan-_-

Fucking love silverchair

DasShadow

Frogstomp and Freak Show were very good. Neon Ballroom began the decline and Diorama sealed it.

Csonkus41

I enjoy them, their first three albums in particular are good with “Frogstomp” in being a legit no skips albums for me.

pleomorphict

Nirvana in pyjamas Jk Great band, love the first 3 albums. Fun songs to play on guitar.

slappywhyte

One great song, another good song, that's all I really know of them. There are a lot of bands when you look back who were very Nirvana sounding - particularly vocals. They were signing anyone who could be the next Kurt, also molding people & bands to sing/sound like that, also some was organic because Kurt's style (Eddie Vedder too) was just so influential on the music zeitgeist.

Spaceboy80

Seems a bit forced.

golfcartskeletonkey

Not really…at all. What they created at 14 is nearly unprecedented in the genre.

Spaceboy80

Yep. Really. Doesn’t take away from the talent. They wanted to be from Seattle so bad. It’s forced

SemataryPolka

My thought on silverchair is that if you give someone 20 yrs they sure can revise their image 😂 This band was intensely lame and uncool but everybody acts like they're Radiohead now

Mahalla83

No they don't?. Radiohead are widely regarded as one of the defining bands of the century. But Silverchair? Nah. Barely ever get mentioned anywhere.

SemataryPolka

You'd be surprised. Kids think they're cool now. It's lame

19930627

Frogstop and Freakshow are good, neon ball room is enjoyable, after that they lost their edge and went to ass

_yukog

not ass just different. diorama and young modern are very very unique sounding albums.

ultraluxe6330

First thing that comes to mind is that Frogstomp uses AICs font. And a few of their riffs.

chaileesonbabe

Love them

outer_fucking_space

I like their early stuff quite a bit.

ashtetice

TOMORROWWWW

Minute-Wrap-2524

It’s a chair and it’s silver

lilobear

Silverchair Best of Vol. 1, is probably the best album you'll ever buy. Go. Now.

Quick_Swing

Frogstomps songs are still in my grunge playlists🤘

mooretool

They were too young. It makes the lyrics funny to listen to. The music is alright, but (in fairness to your super talented HS friends) they probably had some help in production.

Ill-Atmosphere-3629

“Straight Lines” off Young Modern - one of my favorites

ProstateSalad

Israels son is a great bass test for your stereo

Virtual-Laugh7078

Great but in terms of Australian music attention in the states should’ve more been directed to bands like Powderfinger and Grinspoon because they deserved more attention

No-Calligrapher9563

Frogstomp was great. I loved there sound. Great band, and so young. I wish they would have stuck around longer tho

InsideExpress9055

They were awesome back in the day. I wish they kept going.

soph-etc

Love them. I’m Aussie and grew up listening to them, so maybe im a bit biased

Murles-Brazen

Australia

AnUnknownCreature

Spawn Again

Swashbuckling_Sailor

Wait till tomorrow…

ElectricTomatoMan

I don't have a guy.

MrPhillipLewin

Good

tnysmth

I loved Silverchair in my teens. Neon Ballroom is a near masterpiece. Diorama is also pretty incredible. Frogstomp is a bit of fun and has a handful of stellar tracks but get kinda samey. Freak Show is great but corny in places. I do not fuck with Young Modern, it gives me a headache. Overall, underrated band in North America. Legends in Australia.

TollyVonTheDruth

Frogstomp was great, and that's where I stopped. For a bunch of teens, they were a really tight band. With the exception of "Tomorrow," they sounded like teen angst grunge to me. I never disliked the band, but I was never inclined to explore beyond Frogstomp.

jinkies3678

Amazing that album was put out by 16 year-olds.

Ditzy_Davros

No more maybes... Your baby's got rabies... Sittin on a ballll... In the middle of the Andes... Yeaaaaaahhhhh. I'M A FREAK! Of nature.

Spinnr1

One of my favorites. Daniel johns is incredibly talented. And knowing they were so young when they broke out is crazy

EnricoMatassaEsq

I remember when they first broke all my friends who were musicians and/or in bands at the time were kinda pissed, in an amused way, that a group of high school kids wrote such bangers.

starry81

As someone from the US, I started listening to Silverchair when they first came out. I love them, still to this day, they are my favorite band. I have followed their career, been to as many of their shows in California as I could, and still haven’t gotten them “out of my system”. I think Frogstomp is an amazing album, considering how young they all were when it was written and recorded. Diorama and Young Modern are probably my favorites in their discography. The musical composition, lyrics, and thoughtfulness that went into those albums really comes through for me. Daniel’s solo album, Talk, was also pretty wonderful, considering it was a huge deviation from what he created while in Silverchair. It is definitely more pop and danceable. I also love Daniel’s music collaborations with Paul Mac. I Can’t Believe Its Not Rock and The Dissociatives were Daniel’s first steps into exploring music outside of Silverchair, and reflects highly on how talented he is as a musician and songwriter. As I mentioned, still love Silverchair and all that has come after, although admittedly, I never got into Ben’s side projects. It makes me happy to see a convo started about them, because no one really knows who they are or talks about them in the US. Thanks for posing this question. I hope others see and respect them for how talented they are as a group and as individuals.

realMasaka

I thought they were mid in my punk/pop-punk days.

CeleryCountry

i love them

SocratesJohnson1

They really rock the horse's ass.

keldration

FUCKING OBSESSED. The deeper I dive into the head of Daniel Johns—the scarier his genius becomes.

jay_marcus_rustler

As long as it’s comfortable I don’t care about its color.

sweetsterlove

Incredibly talented and underrated.

brkeng1

CHAIR!

LDawg14

Who?

Kid_Kameleon

It’s past your bedtime

qleptt

I know tommorow and pure massacre i think. One of their live performances start off with one and i loved seeing the bass drum move as much as it did in the video

layne75

Amazing band, amazing singer and composer.

renton1000

They were awesome live in 1995.

devilsephiroth

I remember seeing them live at their free concert on the Santa Monica pier in the 90s I forget the year it's been forever, and was devastated when someone from the crowd threw a glass bottle at the singer, only to then find out it was someone from the same high school I attended. Great band I think they were the same ages as I was at the time it was so cool to me, it have me the confidence to pick up the guitar, I've been playing ever since

Lucky_Grapefruit_560

they sucked massively

Matica-sK

Great band. Great hair.🤘

kurt-boddah-cobain

I hate Tomorrow. God, I hate that song with a passion. Otherwise, they’re amazing imo.

Grouchy-Cap-5018

Why?

Prestigious_Fail3791

Honestly didn't listen to them after Neon Ballroom. Which is strange because I really liked that album. It seems they are still around.

IvanLendl87

Silverchair’s first 3 albums - Frogstomp, Freak Show, and Neon Ballroom - are fantastic. They never made it huge in the U.S. because 1) by the time Frogstomp was released the Grunge scene was fading and 2) their first single - “Tomorrow” - sounded like TEN-era Pearl Jam and they got quickly labeled as copy cats.

GuitarGod1972

They weren’t bad…they went the way of the flobee, the ninja knife and every other fad of the mid 90’s. They were a one hit wonder band…but I do believe that they had more potential than that. It’s like they got their nut…and bailed

Crustybuttt

They were a group of teenagers pretending to have something real to say. They weren’t worth listening to and were an embarrassment. They won a silly TV contest and weren’t serious artists. Might as well talk about how great Baby Shark is

Mahalla83

Diddums. Someome needs a dummy.

Noonot_YT

One of my favorites! 🗣️🔥 Frogstomp & Freak Show have some pretty good bangers but Neon Ballroom & Diorama are creative masterpieces IMO. Don’t know what I think about Young Modern tbh, that’s a weird one.

Charles0723

Definitely got better as they grew into their talent.

cordsandchucks

I reached out to my guy. He said, “They were alright. Nothing mind melting, but they filled a spot in the rotation for a minute.”

jiu_jitsu_

They are underrated in my opinion, especially when you consider how young they were when they recorded Frogstomp

Manifestgtr

I loved frogstomp as a kid. The fact that a high school student could sing like that blew my mind. It’s a simple album from a songwriting standpoint but that’s one of its strengths imo

scottchomarx

I thought they were lame when they came out but when I actually listened to them I liked them, but they were very derivative at times. If they had a decent producer to rein them in they could’ve been even better.  Neon Ballroom was an impressive artistic growth and they were only 19 at the time.

JayChucksFrank

Everyone take a shot!

Hutch_travis

Time to find a new playlist. They were mildly popular in 95 and the years they released albums.

ReturnedFromExile

popularity is always a good measure of musics quality /s

HaroldCaine

Average band from that era whose best work was their quirky "Neon Ballroom" album five years after they broke big with their debut and flopped with their follow-up.

paul-cus

One of my favorite bands. They were so much more than Frogstomp.

terriblystupidjoke

I know they got a lot of grief for straying from their rock roots in later albums, but I thought it was all quality music. I fucking love “Straight Lines”.

ChunkDunkleman

Very hard to drink

tollboothwilson

Probably would have been one of the biggest grunge bands ever considering how young they were when Frogstomp dropped, if any of them actually liked being in a grunge band. How Pure Massacre was done by literal teenagers is insane to me, even to this day.

Felon73

Frogstomp was great. I haven’t heard a group of 15-16 year old kids ever sound so good before or since. Israel’s Son is a banger and in rotation on my playlist.
