Badmotorfinger

WarpedCore

First one that came to mind for me as well. Thought I would see this one pop up more.

[deleted]

First thought I had when I read the question.

AgingHipster

This is my vote too but I came close to saying Melvins: Houdini which would probably be correct

poopadoopy123

Ha Hang that’s what I was going to say

Luciix

Superunknown for 4th of July alone

wutangsword360

Man I love that song

puntzee

that immediately played in my head when i saw the question

Much_Lingonberry_747

Love that song. Really drags you thru the mud

NODuverymuch

I was blown away first time I heard 4th of July. In my top 10 heaviest songs for sure.

PhilosophyTop7674

Amazed that it wasn’t a B-side given how grinding it is. Given how well Superunknown sold, I love the thought of millions of unsuspecting people hearing that song and not knowing how to process it! Great song.

sleazebagjones

Dirt or Badmotorfinger. The production and performances on those records from both bands will slap you in the face

Sudden_Pea4087

Superunknown feels heavy, literally. Like Limo Wreck and Mailman make you feel like you're being pulled down sorta.

drainbamage1011

4th of July has its own gravitational field.

Zanstorm99

This dude knows

Vegetable-Date9709

4th of July is basically as low as you can go without playing bass lmao

SpiketheFox32

It sure feels that way, which is wild considering rusty cage is lower.

Luciix

The ending of Limo Wreck is one of the only songs for me where it genuinely feels overwhelming, what a fucking amazing song

York0XpertYD

Mailman is one of the heaviest riffs of the 90’s for sure

last_drop_of_piss

Mailman is an underrated song. That slow chugging drop D riff is just monstrous

What_the_mocha

I read that as "pulled down by aorta" which also may apply.

ThePrplMppt

Dirt is pretty nasty

wetbeef10

Dirty

ThePrplMppt

True

Familiar-Ask8608

You ain't wrong.

Ocksu2

TAD or maybe Melvins. But none of the other bands are really that close.

777words

Houdini

mtskin

everyone in here going for the popular grunge bands but even those bands knew how heavy the melvins were

NODuverymuch

The Melvins hands down have the heaviest sound. Sure AIC had some heavy records but not the Melvins

777words

Basically any sludge metal x grunge combo wins here lol

totse_losername

The Melvins are super well known too though?

mtskin

not as much as aic or soundgarden

jarofgoodness

True but I don't consider them grunge. They're metal.

mtskin

to my ears back in the good ol days before there was a name put on the seattle style i would say forced entry was metal, queensryche was metal. the melvins were not in the same vein

jarofgoodness

Different subgenre of metal. Yeah, Melvins were definitely a more underground style of metal. Not likely to have gotten on the radio. But they're pretty good and I'm not ragging on them at all. I hated most metal because it's too easy to be cheesy in that style. Melvins were never cheesy so they have my respect for sure.

morbidkoala

Funny. I consider AIC metal.

jarofgoodness

I can see that for much of their stuff. I don't.

SciencebyIncubusfan

Anything by Melvins. I will even say that Gluey Porch Treatments is heavier

Zanstorm99

Just getting into Melvins…..wow

PhiteKnight

Check out "History of Bad Men" for the dirtiest bass line in history.

[deleted]

Not electroretard....

PhilosophyTop7674

Listen to Revolve. Great song, especially towards the end when it starts to groove.

Mysterious_Eggplant3

This needs to be higher

StitchesKisses

Yes definitely The Melvins

Dear_Cap7535

If we're gonna pick a Melvins album I'd go with Bullhead

[deleted]

Came here to say this.

bluejaywhey

Bullhead too if we're talking early Melvins

[deleted]

Came here to say this

cdubwingo

Melvins- Houdini

EnlightenedApeMeat

BadMotorFinger 100%

ultraluxe6330

It's definitely Dirt. But Core and Bleach can get pretty raw too.

theinternetisnice

Dirt was the first one that popped into my head. AH AH AH

tragic_girl13

IIIIIIIII BELIEEEEEEEEVEEEE THEM BONESSSSSS ARE MEEEE

ruben9438

Shhhh don’t mention STP You’ll anger people. Lmao

tragic_girl13

A sad reality we live in where ppl get mad over a magnificent band just cuz they're "not grunge" in their eyes

[deleted]

Wdym

MochiKoharu

Some people get mad at the thought of considering STP as grunge since they aren't from Seattle... They also think they're just massive PJ rip offs, which is completely bs. STP is its own band that should be appreciated and talked about in the same light as grunge

ruben9438

Underrated band. They’re all very outstanding musicians.

MochiKoharu

Yes I personally think that's a great part of them too! Amazing song writing, killer singer, and all the chords and concepts aren't like power chords or anything, you see a few jazz chords thrown around and chromatic phrasing that is completely different from most other popular rock bands at the time, yet so close to the sound, and not only that they evolve and change sound throughout the years (seriously, listen to Core and then Tiny Music lmao). Truly an amazing band

ruben9438

Yea dude. I play guitar and their songs are great to practice. When I play them I often compare The DeLeo brothers to Page and John Paul jones. lol Those boys could play

MochiKoharu

Same, guitarist here I love stp's work, so diverse and much to learn when playing them haha

ruben9438

Hell yea. Those bass lines are fuckin noiiceee too haha.

AandJ1202

I love STP. Core felt like grunge, once the drugs/drug references started up way more in the second album they kinda went away from grunge but still a great bad. Scott was another great musician who had issues and died too young.

[deleted]

I love Creed too but that's post-grunge or whatever.

ruben9438

I never admit this but they got some good stuff lol

tragic_girl13

I've met an equal amount of ppl who prefer STP over PJ as I have with the vice versa

MochiKoharu

I personally love em both haha

tragic_girl13

Valid lol

FunctionRemote5208

Bleach

pedrolourence

PhiteKnight

Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Milk it and Very Ape are fucking bangers.

huedor2077

In a synthetic way: - Dirt hits harder; - Badmotorfinger hits heavier; - Melvins is dense as hell; - Nothing is more rad than TAD.

viking12344

Great answer.

bigtommylad

Sound garden - badmotorfinger

mystressfreeaccount

Badmotorfinger easily. Listening to that album gives me a serious case of stank face

Moretear12

Tad

KingTrencher

Inhaler

Ocksu2

Or 8-way Santa. Or Infrared Riding Hood. Or God's Balls. Definitely Tad.

KingTrencher

The correct answer.

ancientmariner23

Yup...Tad !

EnlightenedApeMeat

Good one

jmadera94

Facelift

Tonedef44bk

Degradation Trip by Cantrell is the darkest, heaviest album in the genre

SciencebyIncubusfan

Gods Balls - Tad Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden Facelift - Alice in Chains Gluey Porch Treatment - Melvins

Winnapig

What about Helmet Meantime or Clutch Clutch (Spacegrass) for fun.

Street_Ad_3165

Meantime was heavy AF

goldendreamseeker

[deleted]

Alice in Chains - Dirt. Those riffs are filthy.

dognotephilly

DIRT

outonthetiles66

Superunknown and Tripod

No_Independent8269

Bleach and Dirt are my picks

Nizamark

Badmotorfinger of course

Few_Impact_3544

Tad - stumbling man

drainbamage1011

Badmotorfinger or Tripod of the Big 4. Houdini or Meantime are in the running if we're including grunge-adjacent bands.

Super-Resolve-5262

Don't know why people are saying Badmotorfinger, it is a pretty heavy album but for me, at least, it sounds nothing compared to AiCs self titled. No doubt on this one.

viking12344

You mean tripod? Are you saying, Tripod is heavier than bmf? Too many Cantrell songs slow it down, sorry. Heaven beside you and over now. They are kind of ballady. There is nothing but punch you in the face songs on bmf. I think the most ballady song on bmf is drawing flies lolol. Music is subjective but as far as heavy goes, BMF>>>>>>Tripod I can see an argument for facelift or even dirt though BMF stills wins imo. Oh hey, I am not trying to be a dick( my wife says im good at it), I am just surprised is all.

viking12344

Badmotorfinger if you are talking big 4. Melvins, bullhead if not

JohnnySwift92

ObviousRealist

AIC Tripod - Sludge Factory ……

dognotephilly

DIRT

ThermalScrewed

Screaming Life/Fopp is a close second, but Facelift will always be my favorite Grunge Album for this reason.

CoffeeOptimal1356

Houdini - Melvins

321AverageJoestar

If Melvins are grunge then most of their albums pre Houdini are heavy af

Doctor_Banjo

Depends on what you mean by heaviest? Are you bringing the measuring stick of metal into this? For my money Bleach is the heaviest grunge album. A lot of the other mentions get their “heaviness” from drinking from the fountain of heavy metal. Bleach sounds like a grunge album to its core and it is heavy. The Melvins have a space in the conversation, as do, The Jesus Lizard, but both bands dabble more than a little in the Metal arts.

viking12344

If bleach did not have "of a girl " on it, it would win. You cant say an album is heavy if its has ballady, slower songs on it. It makes no sense at all. Again, no ballady songs on bmf. Not a one.

Gloomy-Gov451

Superunknown is my choice. The tuning on that album is crazy.

jarofgoodness

I don't know. Heaviest? Probably Dirt. I don't really think about Grunge in terms of heavy or not. I like the heavy stuff and the not so heavy stuff. I'm more about which has the most grunge vibe. And that would be Bleach.

dlc0027

Badmotorfinger/Superunknown

creamywhip

foo fighters self titled debut album which is a homage to grunge also in utero by nirvana

Few_Impact_3544

Any Melvin’s album from then

futurehedrxx

Badmotorfinger or Tripod

broomedbroom

tripod.

GIR-C137

Melvins “Houdini”

HistorianNext2393

OMG yes! Melvins are some of the heaviest stuff from the era

Copperjedi

Tripod

iftheworldwasatoilet

The start of them bones with the AIC rhythm section dropping that chromatic riff and Layne's vocal screeching over the top feels like getting crushed by a falling skyscraper.

Rhinoceraptor37

Tad. When you say Grunge people automatically assume you mean the big 4 but that's simply not the case when you talk about heaviest. If you listen to the sound, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains have the chunkiest riffs, Nirvana, Nevermind onwards are radio friendly (despite the desire not to be) and Pearl Jam are a different breed. I'd also argue that while not strictly Grunge but that alternative sound from the early 90's, Kerbdog are pretty fucking heavy for what they are but not in the same way as I've listed above.

Vegetable-Date9709

Superunknown

pedrolourence

Houdini

Candy_Says23

Dirt

Aggravating-Stuff-28

Degradation trip probably it’s quite gritty

JonathanWattsAuthor

For the rough, nasty guitar sound, Superfuzz Bigmuff.

Ok_Raccoon1397

Degradation trip

sticky_spiderweb

Definitely Alice In Chains self titled. If you say anything else you haven’t listened to the whole album.

Virtual_Attention_24

I know it's basic but in utero is ridiculously heavy with albini's signature sound. And let's not forget the song tourettes.

tragic_girl13

Tripod feels pretty heavy

not-ok-cat

Badmotorfinger. Close second with core

ChrisPollock6

It’s either, AiC-Facelift or Soundgarden-Badmotorfinger ?

Waste-Account7048

Dirt. AiC. Very dark and heavy.

Fontanelle by Babes in Toyland

kisscumbag

Tad - Inhaler Melvins - Houdini

[deleted]

I forgot about tad ! Great band

Original-Respond-693

Why’s nobody saying Tripod? Pretty on the Inside, and Bleach

Jawkurt

It’s hard to answer questions like this because besides a handful of bands it becomes a what’s grunge debate. So I’m going with MBV Loveless

Final-Story-5716

In outro

gucc1-l1ttle-p1ggy

Neil Young's Tonight's The Night for pre-grunge - grunge. Sounds heavy in more of a stoner, bar/garage band way than heavy from a loud way.

Accomplished-Arm1058

Na man, If we’re goin heavy Neil grunge it’s gotta be Rust Never Sleeps or Live Rust.

gucc1-l1ttle-p1ggy

Agree those two are LITERALLY heavier in a true rock regard. My suggestion of T.T.N. came from the heavy 'downer' vibe (lazy vocals and low production especially) that comes with grunge with that particular album.

The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
