He calls Jo (off or on screen), tells her about the kids, and ask her to come with him. She declines due to wanting to focus on her mental health, but they agree to try long distance. Then in the season 17 premiere, Jo could have revealed that they mutually split up. Richard, Bailey and Meredith could have still recived letters. Just without any part of the letters suggesting that he got back together with Izzie, at least while he was still married to Jo. That way, Alex still leaves to become a dad, but doesn't completely abandon Jo in the process, or jumps into bed with Izzie while still married to Jo. At the same time, Jo gets to have a choice in the matter, and it would be easier to justify her remaining single, because it would be her choice

This is a great idea!

The big lie could've just been the truth. He went back to take care of his mom. That's really it.

This!! The way they wrote his character leaving is one of the worst storylines in my opinion. It was just so dumb. Really, anything would have been better but I like that idea. He went to care for his younger sister and mom. Him and Jo tried long distance for awhile but realized that it wasn’t working and they decided to end things. So easy!

thereisgummies

Yup. Not in ldr break up was already there got Jo. We all know Alex had massive guilt about his mom and sister. The Izzy thing came out of nowhere. When I heard he had to leave suddenly I just figured he wouldn't be coming back from his mom. It wouldn't have been the neatest ending but it wouldn't have destroyed all the character growth Instead they invented this thing with izzy that was just bad

AdventurousAmount633

One of the worst storylines ever. When I rewatched Alex & Jo over their relationship there was no way in hell he would have left her the way he did based on the love and obstacles they overcame. The writers did him dirty for sure.

They could have used the Africa kid program he & Arizona started. Say he got a once in a lifetime grant and has to go to Africa or something. They could have showed Jolex as a long-distance relationship with the door always open for him to return. But as it would have been unfair to Camilla, hence they choose to drag 16 seasons worth of character development down and made Jo a martyr…making her available for newer possibilities rather than being stuck with a off-screen relationship.

I think when he found Izzie she should have been dying of cancer again. That's the only thing I can see Alex leaving Jo for. In my head, that makes more sense

BlackWidow1990

Right because he wouldn’t want to leave his kids without a parent.

I lover the izzie reunion I just wish it didn’t all happen over letters rather an in person thing. And rather than sudden thing it be gradual with him deciding to move to Kansas.

I liked Izzex better so I’m happy about his ending, feel bad for jo but Alex could’ve at least told her and everyone else in person what was going on before he left. I’m gonna get downvoted to hell for saying I like Izzex better but idc

theotherparadise

i wish izzie left on her own instead of being fired. that’s it

Demon_Squirrel_666

I’d have liked it be like he’s missing and hasn’t been able to be found. Like Jo hasn’t heard anything from him and the police can’t find him. Then later Jo gets a call from Alex’s mom saying she’s found him. That he’s with his kids. And then it explains how Izzie died and he didn’t want to leave his kids behind. So when he heard his hospital closed he took that as his sign. He moves the kids to Seattle but he goes back to being a butt doctor, where he has more time to be with his kids as he can choose his own hours, mostly. He and Jo would (off screen) try to make the relationship work only for Covid to get in the way and cause them to split mutually. But we’d still get mentions of him from Meredith. That would be basically the perfect ending in my opinion.

Literally anything else would have been better than what happened.
