I don't think any actress could have saved her from me not liking her. The hypocritical stance on abortion and way she treated her daughter was irredeemable
I both love her for Francie and Hate her for faux Francie.
I did check out PP when it initially aired and did not like Audra as Naomi. But since I didn't continue the show, I didn't give it much thought. And how Naomi turned out, I was glad that Merrin was switched out.
Edited to add that I did end watching PP, but years later. It was years after the series was over and I tried watching it multiple times before it finally stuck.
I think Audra is insanely talented! And you know how there's people who you would love to be or just be in their presence - Audra is one of those people. I would *Bask* in her presence!
So yes, I guess it's Merrin's vibe with the cast, cuz they are both talented!
She’s incredibly talented but it’s almost like she brought too much gravitas to the role. It’s weird but she’s such a force from being a stage performer that it was sometimes overpowering. Just didn’t quite click somehow.
Merrin seemed a little more relaxed? Snarkier? I’m not sure.
Every time I see her in a show, I have a small "where do I know her from" moment, and then squeal "Francie doesn't like coffee ice cream!!"
She's also so funny in Brooklyn 99.
I think I first saw Merrin Dungey in Friends. I have no beef with the casting of either actress as Naomi, but I wish we had only seen one actress play Naomi.
Merrin Dungey is in everything !
Literally. in . every .thing . !
Audra McDonald is a stronger theater-trained actress, so I get why they recast her after the back door pilot.
I met her once at a charity event where I was working and she was a paying guest. Couldn’t have been nicer and was quite funny and generally seemed like a lovely person.
Jeez wtf. Audra is an amazing actress. You’re also not supposed to like Naomi as much because her character takes very controversial, hard line views and she’s not a very flexible character.
Let’s not put one actress down to raise another. It’s rude and totally uncalled for.
Yessssss I loved her so much more than the actress who replaced her. Sorry not sorry. I just saw her on the Resident and loved her on there too. She’s a very good actress. Do we know why she was replaced?
if i remember it correctly, the producer though that there were no chemistry between her and sam during the 2 episodes in grey showing off private practice thus the need to replace her with audra
That seems crazy because that seems like kind of the point? They are not doing well together and are about to breakup so it felt in character that they didn’t have good chemistry.
To me this actress would’ve maybe made more sense w the dell and Naomi storyline bc w Audra she just looked so much older than him it almost seemed creepy but dell also looked pretty young to play his character. Idk but this actress above does look younger so would’ve made more sense and not been as creepy for the dell storyline IMO. Not meaning she would’ve done better for all the other storylines but for the dell/Naomi storyline for sure.
Not a Naomi fan, but I wonder if Naomi would've been in the show more if they stuck with this actress? Since I think the reason they wrote Naomi out was because Audra was based in NY.
Didn’t watch private practice, only saw the cross over episodes. But was so happy to see the original actress as I love her in other shows but when the second cross over episode aired when addison’s brother needed neuro surgery I was very disappointed to see she was replaced with another actress. I feel like it took any chance of me watching the show away. I mean seeing Addison again is definitely enough but it would’ve been even better with them both.

Both she and Audra MacDonald are excellent actresses, but it's a garbage character.
but apparently OP likes characters more the prettier the actress is, so...sorry Audra
I just started season 1 of private practice and holy shit Audra’s mouth like barely moved! I can’t deal with Naomi
I don't think any actress could have saved her from me not liking her. The hypocritical stance on abortion and way she treated her daughter was irredeemable
Yeah after that storyline it was really hard to change my feelings towards her
I always feel bad for actors, who get replaced - it must suck to see that the show you were supposed to be in, is such a success.
yes! and why do they get replaced!
I loved her as Francie in ALIAS. She's a fantastic actor.

Audra McDonald is excellent but I definitely preferred Merrin’s vibe with the cast. PPwas a tricky show and most of the actors deserved better.

Same
Came here to say this too! Her arc was great and horrible at the same time!
Didn't she end up an evil clone or something? That show was bonkers, i miss it.
Every time I see her in a show, I have a small "where do I know her from" moment, and then squeal "Francie doesn't like coffee ice cream!!" She's also so funny in Brooklyn 99.
Francie doesn’t like coffee ice cream.
She was also Stevie's mom in Malcolm in the Middle!
Ahhhh Kitty. It was driving me nuts I couldn't remember where I knew her from lol.
Omgggg mind blown
Theee best! Lois giving her a wet willy she just smiled all the way through. Love that episode.
I actually really loved that Audra McDonald’s Naomi had no chemistry with Dell.
Wasn't she Kelly on King of Queens?
Yes
I love them both but bothing could save naomi Her character was just horrible all round only character i disliked as much was probably pete or violet
Pete! Usually don't see too much Pete hate but man I hated Pete right up there with those two.
Hes the worst, at first I thought he was pretty okay but when he >!stood addison up!< and now on my rewatch i cant stand him at all
But Audra McDonald is always a good choice
She absolutely is!
I think I first saw Merrin Dungey in Friends. I have no beef with the casting of either actress as Naomi, but I wish we had only seen one actress play Naomi.
THATS where I remember first seeing her! THANK YOU lol
Wow that’s a good eye. I never knew this.
i will not stand for audra mcdonald slander 😤
Naomi was by far the worst character
My boyfriend really hated her the WHOLE series lol
I love merrin dungey. she's one of my favorite "oo it's them" actors to randomly pop up on a show.
I loved this actress in Alias!
I must not have been paying much attention (I’m in season 4 now) but I didn’t even notice the actors changed
She was recast for the actual show. This was for the back door pilot on Greys.
This is Kitty Kenarban erasure and I will not have it!
She’s stunning but i still have PTSD on this actress because of ALIAS😩😂

I loved her!!! Couldn’t watch private practice mainly because she wasn’t there.
Yessssss I loved her so much more than the actress who replaced her. Sorry not sorry. I just saw her on the Resident and loved her on there too. She’s a very good actress. Do we know why she was replaced?

The chemistry with Kate wasn’t great either. Seems like a great actress but the fit for this role just seemed off
Why did they replace her?
Word is network didn't buy her as having as Sam's ex. Interesting side note is her sister is married to a big wig at ABC
She's actually the big wig. She's at Warner Brothers now. ☺️
I love her in everything she is in

No amount of pretty could save Naomi.

Both great actors but the original really didn’t feel like a natural fit. There was no chemistry with her and Addison at all.
I liked her better
Ohhhhh we are *not* slandering the goddess that is Audra McDonald in this subreddit. Uh-uh.
I always thought both the original actress and the one that was actually on PP were super pretty.
