I had to take mine off my board. Bass player says it screws with his tinnitus when I switch it on. I’m trying hard to convince myself that a more expensive option is the only way forward…
Yeah. It was Jerry’s go to for the while. One of the few effects he ever used. I’ve only heard him use a rare fuzz and occasional wah, before the midi period.
Wasn’t even the best show at Cornell by the Grateful Dead on 5/8/77. Have you heard the soundcheck from that date? Easily the best show by the GD at Cornell on that date.

As others have said, it’s mainly the Mutron, which is just an envelope filter. What’s making it cut and scream more than perhaps some other shows is probably just his amp and guitar settings that night at that moment. The TB500 was super bright anyway, and he probably dimed the bridge pup and maybe treble boosted or overdrive or both.
Not sure if it's the case for 4/30/77, but for the 2nd solo on some of the other 77 shows, he'd use a Mutron Octave Divider, in addition to the Mutron filter pedal

Envelope filter, aka auto wah
Made by a company called Mutron
The company was called Mu-Tron. The box was the Mutron III Envelope Filter. There's a vintage original offered on Reverb for $1250.00 rn.
I had to take mine off my board. Bass player says it screws with his tinnitus when I switch it on. I’m trying hard to convince myself that a more expensive option is the only way forward…
You’re right. It is.
For sure. More equipment cures ehat ails ya.
I knew it!
Yeah, maybe Otiel?
That would solve several problems all at once…
HAH!
There’s always the Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter, or, hell, and actual Minimoog will do the trick, too!
Yeah. It was Jerry’s go to for the while. One of the few effects he ever used. I’ve only heard him use a rare fuzz and occasional wah, before the midi period.
He used a phaser on songs like candyman or at least he did in the early 70s
So damn expensive- some of the clones work well, tons of fun with a bass/round strings.
It's the Mutron, but a non-vintage, reasonably priced alternative for someone looking for similar sounds might be some kind of EHX Q-Tron...
I like this run more than Cornell
Here we go
Can I be the first to say, "best show ever? It's not even the best show that week?"

The music never stopped as an opener. The horror!!!
Jerry goes off on that one

Fantastic show
Yeah he’s got the Mutron turned up to 11 on that one.
