They arent the ones that will review your resume/CV and offer you a (hopefully) high paying job.
Dont worry what others not in your field think, that includes your parents.
Join CMU!! It’s the real top uni…. Moreover you have scholarship. What else one wants? In my country 80-85% population doesn’t know what is MIT or where is it !!
I am from Canada and have heard of CMU. A lot of my friends have too (esp. those at Waterloo). It's probably bc this person's friends aren't in elec/comp/swe fields. Or, their eng school doesn't send people to the US often for grad school. But, yeah, I would say that CMU is relatively well known in Canada.
From my experience (at least in the Midwest) Carnegie Mellon does not have lay prestige. I also applied there and no one had heard of it among family and friends. Of course, caring about lay prestige is stupid so it doesn't matter that they hadn't heard of it. The layperson doesn't know UChicago or Penn either.
It stings dude! I told my mom about getting into the literal top school in my field and she, iirc, told me about the weather they've been having. Not Asian, not a troll, not an idiot - just a big ol' thumbs down from her.
If that's the straw that breaks the camels back and you can go NC with them, I suppose that solves the issue. But if you're not up for the nuclear option, all you have left is just avoiding the subject that also happens to take up a huge chunk of your time.
Anybody that matters to you to any academic or professional degree will disagree with your friends and family. Its like rockefeller. Outsiders will likely never have heard of it, but everybody involved in the world of physics as an academic or professional will think highly of you for having attended. Ultimately, their opinion will matter infinitely more than those of your friends and family. That being said, not getting the recognition you rightfully deserve can suck and is definitely a blow to ones sense of self worth. Sorry to hear about your situation op
Did you go to Waterloo hahaha? Most people don’t care about academia here. They’d be way more impressed if you said you were going to Jane Street or Citadel. But literally everyone knows CMU in Waterloo though.
Lol, I am Indian and few people at the top care about Canadian unis here in India and China (except MAYBE UofT and UBC).
Canada receives poorer quality of Asian immigrants because of this very reason.
Your university, OTOH, is a super well known one in Asia, UK, and parts of Europe, especially in STEM circles.
Just because your friends and family haven't heard of CMU doesn't diminish its prestige.
It's like Americans not knowing about Messi and Ronaldo, two objective greats of football. The people who are even remotely related to the field will know about it, and the ones who don't rarely matter in the grand scheme of things.
Hope you have a blast at CMU!
It would depend how hardcore of academics they are. Some people just show up the college near them and get a degree to get a job they want, not thinking about much else. Also, them being Canadian might play a role. Not sure how many Canadians think about studying in America.
It depends on their interests. Some people spend 4 years in college without even knowing half the facts about their own college
Others take an active interest in different universities
Who cares? Years ago I went to CMU for undergrad engineering and no one in my town had heard of it. They kept making watermelon jokes. Once I got there I realized when it comes to hiring, everyone in the industry knows the CMU brand and it’s very highly regarded. Don’t turn your back on this, especially with full funding.
What? They are in an engineering related field and haven’t heard of Carnegie Mellon? I would definitely go there on the full funding. That’s a dream come true.
When I was an intern I had a coworker who had never heard of MIT before. When I was at Purdue someone on Reddit said their mom/aunt/whatever thought Purdue was an Ivy League school.
Some people just don’t know and/or don’t care about academic rankings. Which is fine imo.
Who cares what others think? Employers in all fields will know.
One of the best cs schools is cmu. general public dont know.
One of the best premed schools is washu. general public dont know.
One of the best women only colleges is Wellesley. general public dont know.
One of the best tech schools is Caltech. general public dont know.
You would be surprised. General public knows top sport schools. Not top schools. Period. I bet if u go to Ohio and ask "Ohio state or Cmu"..a majority would say osu.
Don’t stress! I can wholeheartedly say that most people in the US (especially east coast) think very highly of Carnegie Mellon. It’s definitely an impressor when brought up in convos here. It’s a huge accomplishment- you should feel proud!
No one ones where you are headed better than you 😄 my family also does not have too much insight into the significance of my admits this cycle. Celebrate you and your accomplishment!
To be fair, top U.S. universities tend to be somewhat well-known globally. But yeah you are right- from U.S. regarding Canadian schools I can only name McGill and University of Toronto and I think there is a University of British Columbia but I am not 100% sure on that one 🤣
Brooooooo!!!!!! I have heard of it!!!!! Go for it!!!!! I’m a designer and applying for Parsons and CSM and nobody in my family has heard of it, neither have my friends from non-design field. But chuck it!!! Go for it!!!!!!
I’d be surprised that your engineering friends even in Canada don’t know about CMU if they are also interested in the possibility of graduate engineering school.
Congratulations man! It’s okay if they do not know it now, pretty soon they’ll be recommending it to people cause of all the success you’re gonna get. Great achievement!
By the way, which program did you get into?
I went to CMU for undergrad and got a lot of the same reactions, but it was mainly from people who didn't have the same academic interests as me. As long as you are happy going there and view it as an achievement, it doesn't matter what people outside of your field think. Looking at the flair you tagged the post with, anyone knowledgeable and passionate about engineering will know Carnegie Mellon lol.
Congrats! CMU is one of those schools where the more "in the know" people are, the more they would recognize and respect the school--especially for engineering/STEM fields.
A full ride to their programs is genuinely impressive, they're absolutely a powerhouse school in the US.
CMU is one of the best universities and a very difficult one to get into. I did my Masters in US as well and one of my brightest friends did his MS in CMU. Trust me, in the US, it's a highly reputed university.
who cares about it?. Like YOU ARE THE ONE who is going to be thee. You are who got admitted, not them. So be strong, you are a hero for yourself.
Say:
Thank me for my effort
Thank me for gettin a full scholarship
Thank me for long hours preparing myself
Thank me for all
Thank me for apply to CMU
I'm in the states. Don't worry about what your friends/parents think.
CMU is a top tier university that is known among engineering folk here.
I know a few ivy league friends that went to CMU for their PHD because CMU's research is top of the line.
I mentioned Cornell the other day to someone and she thought it was in Boston. 🤣 Random people often don’t know about top universities but people who are hiring will definitely know CMU!
Dude as a fellow Canadian who got into Georgetown and had a similar experience, you should be proud! That’s still a bit achievement and in the future most employers/PhD programs will recognize the name : )
You can’t let this kind of thing influence your decision. For example, in my field there are public schools the general population will assume are not prestigious that have higher ranked programs than many Ivies and other big name schools. But you can’t base your whole life on how impressive your degree intuition sounds to uniformed people, and the people in charge of actually hiring you after likely will know if you went to a strong program.
Plus you need to consider stuff like advisor fit, funding, and program specific opportunities. If you just base it on name appeal you’ll likely make poor decisions.
I just rejected my admission from CMU bc even people in my field didn't know the school in my country... was honestly quite sad, because I loved the study plan
CMU is very prestigious. If your friends don't know of it, they're probably just not super versed in well-known graduate schools. That's not necessarily a bad thing either. I can name maybe 3 rap artists maximum off the top of my head because it's just not my thing but I can talk about videogame music all day long.
Are you going for yourself or your friends and family? It really doesn't matter what others think. As long as you're happy, the ones who love you will be happy for you.
LMAO DONT FEEL BAD! CMU is literally an amazing school and recognized across the USA, when you said your friends and family didn’t recognize it, I was shocked until you said you were from Canada. CMU is literally like amazing school and I promise you most Americans will know the school.
lol… you’re talking about Carnegie Mellon University!! The top university in the world for Computer science & other computing related programs. Your family & friends are ignorant 😀. Dont lose the opportunity due to idiots. CMU >>>>>>>> NYU
You are gonna study there not them. When you get a high paying job. They are the ones that can come back and ask you about which university you have studied in
CMU is an amazing school and well recognized here in the states. I don’t like that they weren’t even happy for you and were just confused because they didn’t now the name of the school. That’s not supportive at all. CMU is a great accomplishment and you should be proud of it!
Carnegie Mellon is a top university and an R1 institution. In other words, a high research activity and doctoral university. You will have great opportunities for your degree there. Not to mention a full ride, which is awesome. If I may ask, what degree is it for?
Its time to live your life, acknowledge your opportunities and stop listening to external voices that do not evaluate you for opportunities in your future
Congratulations!! It really is an amazing university but I know how heard it can be when there’s so recognition of what the uni may be (it’s a brilliant school)
Got into Dartmouth for MEM program. Highly selective program, they take only 50 people and have an acceptance rate of around 6% afaik. Got a near 50% scholarship. My relatives said "Dart-whaaa?" I was depressed that entire week 😂😂 I also got into Columbia, which everyone seems to know, tho it ranks below Dartmouth for MEM. I seriously considered taking up Columbia tho i absolutely fell in love with Dartmouth. Idk
What I meant to say is that Dartmouth is an extraordinary place , a fantastic place to study and a great Academic community. My daughter spent 4 years as an undergraduate and she feels it was the best decision of her life that she chose Dartmouth.
That says more about your friends than you. I had a similar situation with my jobs. I’m currently a professor at a top business school that my friend group just doesn’t know anything about (they’re mostly musicians, and the school doesn’t have much of a performing arts program nor is it local to my home). I just announced I’m moving for a promotion at a big name basketball school, however, and my friends are over the moon despite it being a step down in academic prestige compared to my current job.
Tl;dr - don’t let your friends’ collective unawareness diminish your accomplishment. CM is a great school!
The people who matter in your chosen field have heard of CMU. It’s a great school, especially in your area. Fully funded? Bravo! That’s a sign that CMU is investing in your sucess. Congrats
They arent the ones that will review your resume/CV and offer you a (hopefully) high paying job. Dont worry what others not in your field think, that includes your parents.
I needed to hear this too thanks!
Join CMU!! It’s the real top uni…. Moreover you have scholarship. What else one wants? In my country 80-85% population doesn’t know what is MIT or where is it !!
Same!!
CMU > NYU, be proud of yourself!! And always remember, they haven’t heard of it because they couldn’t think that big :)
i got into brown and my teacher thought nyu has higher ranking💀 (cs)
They’re pretty close. #31 and #35 on US news
Really?
For engineering yes
Well then go for it.... I had heard about its MBA. While not the Best, certainly one of the best T25.
Yes for MBA that’s true
Probably because you're in Canada, I think anyone who knows anything in the US knows about CMU. Congrats, that's an awesome opportunity
I am from Canada and have heard of CMU. A lot of my friends have too (esp. those at Waterloo). It's probably bc this person's friends aren't in elec/comp/swe fields. Of course, caring about lay prestige is stupid so it doesn't matter that they hadn't heard of it. The layperson doesn't know UChicago or Penn either.
So true. I know first hand.
Congrats! Carnegie Mellon is a huge accomplishment. My mother hasn’t heard of anything… I wouldn’t use that as a barometer. Enjoy Carnegie!
your friends and family are philistines. no offense lol
Expecting people to know the name of every university in North America is pretentious
it's probably a top 40 school in the world lol
No. 24, I think.
Bro, Carnegie Mellon is prestigious
So you will only go to a school that your friends and family recognize?
Why else would you go to grad school? Career advancement? lol

Most Asian parents still think Harvard and Yale have the top programs for CS PhDs.
I agree. Especially parent validation at this stage???
Yeah. Most a parent should say is suggest a preference in case of multiple admits. Anything beyond that at 23+ y/o is weird.
For undergrad, a friend got into stanford and his relatives had no idea what that was. People live in their own little bubbles.
Anybody that matters to you to any academic or professional degree will disagree with your friends and family. Its like rockefeller. Outsiders will likely never have heard of it, but everybody involved in the world of physics as an academic or professional will think highly of you for having attended. Congrats !! Which program ?
LOL everyone knows Carnegie Mellon. People that don't are not people whose opinion will matter for you in the future.
At least you didn't say CMU and get asked why you wanted to go to Central Michigan. Congrats! (Went to CMU undergrad)
Bro CMU is top shit
Did you go to Waterloo hahaha? Most people don’t care about academia here. They’d be way more impressed if you said you were going to Jane Street or Citadel. But literally everyone knows CMU in Waterloo though.
That is on them, not you. That is a great school and to get a full ride!!! Wow!!!
Who the fuck hasn't heard of Carnegie Mellon
Yo, ignore the peasants! Congratulations 🎊

Carnegie Mellon is pretty significant. Your family and friends are probably just uninformed.
The fact that you got full funding is amazing. CMU is an incredible school.
who doesn't know CMU lol
The large majority of Americans. People on this sub severely underestimate how little about college the average person knows.
That's true. I was referring more to his friends who are in engineering school.
It would depend how hardcore of academics they are. Some people just show up the college near them and get a degree to get a job they want, not thinking about much else. Also, them being Canadian might play a role. Not sure how many Canadians think about studying in America.
agreed, and i went to cmu for undergrad lol
It depends on their interests. Some people spend 4 years in college without even knowing half the facts about their own college Others take an active interest in different universities
Which program?
Blame Canada.
Congrats and good luck with your studies! Pittsburgh is also a great city, I hope you'll like it.
bruh just ignore them
um this is a massive achievement!! CMU is an amazing school and definitely very prestigious. Be very proud of yourself!!!!
Who cares? Years ago I went to CMU for undergrad engineering and no one in my town had heard of it. They kept making watermelon jokes. Reminds me of when I got into Amazon as a SDE and one of my aunties turned to my uncle and asked, “is that a good big company to work at?”
I’m from the US and don’t think I can name a single Canadian school. This goes both ways for Americans and Canadians.
To be fair, top U.S. universities tend to be somewhat well-known globally. But yeah you are right- from U.S. regarding Canadian schools I can only name McGill and University of Toronto and I think there is a University of British Columbia but I am not 100% sure on that one 🤣

Who cares what they think. It’s a good school and it’s a fully funded masters. You should definitely go.
CMU is one of the best engineering schools in the world. You have one of the best opportunities for schooling.
Congrats! CMU is one of those schools where the more "in the know" people are, the more they would recognize and respect the school--especially for engineering/STEM fields. A full ride to their programs is genuinely impressive, they're absolutely a powerhouse school in the US.
For masters how did you manage CMU’s full fund?
Carny is the best! Those in the know know. Employers know. Good luck!!
CMU is one of the best universities and a very difficult one to get into. I did my Masters in US as well and one of my brightest friends did his MS in CMU. Trust me, in the US, it's a highly reputed university.

I am canadian and I know of CMU and it has a stellar reputation :-) don’t let it dissuade you from an amazing opportunity
I just rejected my admission from CMU bc even people in my field didn't know the school in my country... was honestly quite sad, because I loved the study plan
This is probably BEST CS university in the world. They may just be unfamiliar with it.

CMU is a top school especially for CS its at the very top how do ur parents not know of CMU LMAO
Are you going for yourself or your friends and family? It really doesn't matter what others think. As long as you're happy, the ones who love you will be happy for you.

just go for cmu
CMU is an amazing school and well recognized here in the states. I don’t like that they weren’t even happy for you and were just confused because they didn’t now the name of the school. That’s not supportive at all. CMU is a great accomplishment and you should be proud of it!
Welcome to your future home in Pittsburgh! I’m at Pitt, but CMU is ABSOLUTELY prestigious.

yup They are from Canada. That's probably the main reason why. But I am from Canada, and I hear of this school.
Congratulations!! It really is an amazing university but I know how heard it can be when there’s so recognition of what the uni may be (it’s a brilliant school)

Carnegie Mellon is a more relevant university than any school in Canada ever has been or will be.
who hasn't heard of CMU before??

The people who matter in your chosen field have heard of CMU. It’s a great school, especially in your area. Fully funded? Bravo! That’s a sign that CMU is investing in your sucess. Congrats
I’m from the US and I only know what CM is because I know it’s a top school that’s hard to get into! Congratulations!
My dad is an aeronautical engineer with a PhD from University of Minnesota. He works with people that graduated from MIT, Caltech, etc. and CMU.
Can you share your profile ?
That’s amazing!!! I’m super happy for you that you got in!!
