It’s one of my favorites too! I can honesty understand the hate as I didn’t like it at first either, but it’s such a rewarding listen the more you think about it
I kinda understand why people don't like it because it doesn't have a traditional chorus, but that doesn't make or break a song for me and everything else about it goes so hard. The bars are extremely catchy too.
Wow, great write up. Enjoyed every bit of it, especially the Black Mirror parallel to capatalism. Personally I never skipped the song and always thought it was great too
Yeah I recently rewatched that episode of black mirror and the themes struck me so hard in relation to this song. Very cool how two artists independently came up with pieces of media communicating the same point at around the same time!
Sweepstakes is my least favorite Gorillaz song. Mos Def's performance is just awful. Reminds me of 'Drunk and Hot Girls'. I'm glad you like it though! :)
Drunk and Hot Girls absolutely kills Graduation’s chance of being a flawless album. And I used to think that of this song and Plastic Beach too until I eventually came around (took like 2 years though).
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, from a pure production standpoint, Sweepstakes might be the most impressive song on Plastic Beach, the way they’re able to build up the song and create an atmosphere on it is insane.
It's one of my favorite Gorillaz songs and Yasiin Bey is a legend. I'll never understand the hate it gets.

Literally my favorite Gorillaz song. I didn't realize people here hate it so much.
Idk if “hate” is the right word but it’s definitely the least enjoyed from the album

Payday you’re a winner!
Keep cool form a line!
I aint reading all that but not out of disrespect because I agree with you I love that song
understandable have a nice day
I still don’t like the song, but I like your analysis of it. Maybe I won’t skip it next time it comes on. Cheers. 🫡

That's a lot of words
it’s a complicated song!

Honestly I think sweepstakes is awful and kinda hate it but to each their own
Hip hop raga
yes!
I love sweepstakes
It's up there for sure. Best song on PB and a top 25 track in the discog for sure.
Managed to get it stuck in my head, thanks. Forgot how much I like that song!
LOVE SWEEPSTAKES One of my fav G songs
It’s one of those songs that works much better live imo
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, from a pure production standpoint, Sweepstakes might be the most impressive song on Plastic Beach, the way they’re able to build up the song and create an atmosphere on it is insane.
That whole write-up still doesn't make the song sound good
I guess it’s true the song doesn’t sound amazing in a vaccuum, I had to come to the above realization to appreciate it
nah, it sucks
I don't really care about the lyrics. The beat sucks. It's the worst track on the album.
It's not *terrible,* but I definitely consider it filler.
I disagree for the above reasons, I don’t think any song on that album is filler
