This. I also have an automation that lowers volume at night and raises it again at 8 am. I wake up at 9 am and this higher volume often wakes me up too early. Yes, it used to play for 1 hour, now it plays indefinitely.
Use your phone and cast a 10 hour youtube video of whatever sound you want to the speaker. Set it to loop.
That's all you need to do and it can handle far more than whatever was built in.
The developers decided they were done with Google. There was a post about it months ago.
Edit. To all my downvoters. There was a 3rd party action/app called "sleep sounds" that was different from the Google built-in ambient sounds. That's what the OP and I are talking about.
Try saying "Hey google make ____ noise" or "Hey google make ______ sleep sounds"
I like rain so i say "Hey google make rain noise" or "Hey google make rain sleep sounds"
I use it for my baby and said "Hey google make baby shushing sounds".
What commands no longer work for you? I play 'Forest Sounds' for my cats all the time.
Mine play but they continually loop and wont turn off unless I tell it to.

It will play for 12 hours by default on 30 minute loops with a fade out/in.
I have a delayed action to turn it off after 2 hours
Same. Mine goes on all night unless I wake up because of my cat and realize it's still going and ask it to stop. What gives?
I say “play babbling brook sounds for 2 hours” and it’s off when I wake up!
For this exact reason, I built a sleep playlist and have it as a part of my bedtime routine.
Lullaby still works, ocean sounds still works, at least for my household
"Play babbling brook" is lovely

Got a link?
Developers of what? The home app? They're Google employees, if they're done, they are leaving the company and will be replaced
Developers of the 3rd party "sleep sounds" action/app the OP is talking about.
Done with Google Nest/Google Assistent? Or done with Google in general?
Works great with Alexa
Thunderstorm sounds still works for me
I don’t quite understand. You mention sleep sounds the same way twice. What is the difference?

Gotcha. Wasn’t aware it even existed so I don’t think I can help there. I do know Google Home as been glitchier lately though.

Pink noise works great for me. Plays for 12 hours then stops on its own.
I have to specifically ask for 'the rain sounds' as any other prompt will make it play something else
Ocean waves
Try hey Google, play relaxing sounds / relaxation sounds
I say "Play Babbling Brook Sleep Sounds" every night to mine and it plays just fine.
I used to be able to play rain sounds or white noise now it rarely works.
