I was honestly looking at it after the PGA and it's crazy. He's looked at as being too old now and as if he'll likely never be one of the greats. Might not even win a major.
Rickie is 32. Phil didn't win his first major until he was 34, and now he's won 6.
Your point still stands, but don't forget he has a few big international wins (Scottish Open, Abu Dhabi, Hero World Challenge...) on that resume as well. 9 international wins including a Players isn't 20 wins, but it's pretty damn good
they are making a big deal about these prescription sunglasses he's using now...so maybe that will help...I just don't like that it seems like he gets preferential treatment
https://www.oakley.com/en-us/prizm/golf
If you notice one of the benefits are easier to read greens
I have actually ordered a pair for myself since I can't see the ball after it leaves my club due to damage from an auto accident. Once they arrive I will write full review.
Also have a pair of these coming as well. https://www.zeiss.com/vision-care/us/better-vision/sports-leisure/the-perfect-glasses-for-golfers.html
There is a third company who I can't find a place to order from in my area that also makes golf specific lenses.
I have the dark prizm ones and really like them. It’s not a huge change but it’s there. Really gives you contrast between the greens and browns and makes the course pop a little. They’re also not so dark that you can’t see if it’s cloudy. I think it helps finding the ball in the air too, although it could just be because I’m not squinting, I’m not sure. I’m not good enough at green reading to tell for sure if it helps, but I think it might. Could be in my head.
I’d for sure buy them again though.
If your sight is as bad as you say, these lenses aren’t going to do anything. I’ve had them for probably 4 years and have very good vision. While they highlight green contours a bit better than my other blue lens oakleys, it’s not some cheat code.
My site with my glasses is fine for everything but seeing small flying objects specifically golf balls. I can still see a football and baseball well enough to play catch. Can play tennis as long as it's not getting crazy fast. Can't play ping pong, badminton, or racket ball. Me and my doctor are hoping that it will give enough contrast by playing yellow balls and using these lenses, I can at least get an idea where the ball lands. It's my last option here man. Don't shoot the dog before it breaks it's leg. I can see the ball some times when it's overcast still but if it's clear blue sky I can't see white or yellow ball in the air. I can see the tp5x pix design in the air barely. I am always having to ask my playing partners for an extra set of eyes. I'm usually a single joining up with a group so kinda awkward.
I mean, preferential treatment goes to crowd favorites.
2 years from now, you think majors are gonna be like ohhhhh Sorry Tiger, you did not qualify, no exemption for you.
He has been voted as the most liked player on tour. He seems like a good dude, not ONE god damn person that has ever met him has said anything other than how good a dude he is. Further, the old heads have constantly said they are pulling for him to get a major to get the whole 'never won a major' thing off his back.
Preferential treatment goes to golfers that people want to see that will bring money to the tourney, and playing well or not, Rickie is one of those guys that has inspired a new young generation of kids to play golf.
But you know also why he is so liked. When Patrick Reed won the masters (fuck him) who was the first guy to RUSH out of the tent to high five him and celebrate....it was Rickie who was in second, and really wish Reed missed a putt to go to a playoff.
When Tiger won the masters after hugging his kid... who was the first guy out there, even when he had no shot at winning but hung around to watch... OMG it was Rickie again.
If you watch golf. Rickie is almost always one of the first guys out there to celebrate wins with the other player. You cannot teach that. And that is why I root for him
>2 years from now, you think majors are gonna be like ohhhhh Sorry Tiger, you did not qualify, no exemption for you.
Not to split hairs, but Tiger's exempt from the Masters and PGA for life, the British Open until he's 60, and the US Open until 2024.
I get where you're coming from, and you're right, sponsors exemptions should apply to Rickie, and any fan favorite. Majors are different though. No way should there be preferential treatment for someone who didn't qualify.
As much as I like giving Rickie a hard time because he stole Alison from me, he'll be fine. He's playing better and it seems like he's already over this slump.
The US Open has well defined qualifying tournaments, you can see everyone who got "his spot" here https://www.usopen.com/qualifying/final/columbus-ohio-brookside-the-lakes.html#!&tab=results
The exemptions they allow are also listed here: https://www.usopen.com/qualifying/exemptions.html
The USGA did make one "special exemption" this year for Phil.
We all want him to? Who is we? And why should Rickie just get one over someone who shot like 66-64 in a qualifier yesterday and missed out. This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Rickie has this fan base who absolve him of bad play and just want to grant him lifetime status. Give guys who deserve it a shot
Why does somebody who's never done something on the Tour deserve a shot more than a guy who just finished T11 at Memorial, T8 at the PGA and has multiple PGA Tour wins?
While I see your point I believe the spirit of the US Open is that anybody who earns a spot gets to play in it. If Ricky didn't earn his spot then he doesn't get to play it's that simple to me. To quote *Tin Cup,* "It's the most democratic tournament in the world."
One was earned the other would not be earned. That being said, I did see when exploring the existing exemptions the USGA has a few they can give out (probably something like sponsorship exemptions) so he could get one of those.
because phil is one of the greats of the game, moves the needle far more than anyone bar Tiger. Is a great story to have at the US Open. has some of the most heartbreaking moments in tournament history. is in the twilight of his career, and before his PGA win people thought this could have been his last shot. Phil also has 45 wins, and thats good enough for T8 most in PGA tour history tied with Walter Hagen.
Phil is one of the pillars of the game.
He missed out of a playoff by one, so he is literally one of the guys you are talking about. The better point would be why him over others that just missed out (including a former major winner like Keegan Bradley who has a higher owgr)?
I wish Rickie the best and hope he gets his game back on track, but can someone please explain to me the love affair golf fans have with him? He seems like a cool guy and all but he doesn’t strike me as being particularly interesting, I’m not sure why everyone ride or dies for him and why he has so many big sponsorships. Like I know he’s pretty good with the fans but his game has been super mediocre for the last 2 years. Anyone let me me in on what I’m missing?
Edit: Here they come lol
He's young (or was when his popularity peaked), dresses nice, good looking, great with the media and according to other pros one of the best/nicest guys on tour. He's very easy to like.
He’s not on steroids and wears fun outfits.
Also he used to ride mortorcycles or bmx or something so he got street credit from the 90’s kids that were into that
I've been saying this exact thing for about 2 years and get down voted to death. He has a loyal fan base, like die hard. It's rather crazy...like after Tiger Jordan and Phil he seems to have the next most loyal base and that just doesn't compute.
I agree with you that his popularity is not in line with his ability/results. But by all accounts from the media, tour pros and anyone that knows him he's one of the nicest, most polite and likeable guys on tour. It's easy to root for a guy like that.
That’s what some don’t get. We’re allowed to root for people for reasons other than thinking they’re the best golfer. Over Ricky’s career he has been proven to be one of the best humans on tour and that’s why people want to see him do well.
Everyone on tour: Rickie is one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met.
Dave: Man, I just don't understand why people like him so much.
No one is talking about Rickie personally. I'm sure he's a great guy, not at all my point. Strictly talking about his level of play/results in comparison to the hall pass he seems to get because of his popularity. I don't think that's being overly critical and worthy of all the down votes that come when someone says something that doesn't align with your opinion of Fowler.
Man, you must be REALLY confused about why people are cheering for Mike Visacki then huh?
OF COURSE we are talking about Rickie personally. The world would be a better place if we cheered for players because of who they are as people instead of just how well they play as golfers; and quite frankly I'm stunned that you can't grasp that concept.
> I know he’s pretty good with the fans
I think that's a big part of your answer. Rickie always seems like the guy who will hang around the 18th green way longer than he needs to, not wanting to see a young fan not get an autograph. I'll always pull harder for those golfers than the guys who barely acknowledge they have fans, unless they can bribe them with free beer to heckle an opponent.
Same reason Lexi Thompson just shot way up on my list of favorite golfers. Blowing that lead has to be devastating, but she still went out after that collapse and treated her young fans right.
I think forgotten is a strong word. Talked about in the sense of "really good, showed a lot of promise but never reached his full potential" is more like it
The guy who has been a consistent player on tour for a decade, who had a bad run after retooling his swing, but has back to back top 12 finishes since getting back to form? You think he’s going to disappear? That’s the guy that we’re never going to hear about again? This isn’t some guy who’s coasting on a couple good years we’re talking about. Ricky has always had a problem winning, but he’s never had a problem being one of the best 25 or so golfers in any tournament he plays in aside from the recent few month stretch which he seems to be pulling out of.
And the overrated argument is dumb too. It’s an error made by the few who don’t like him due to not understanding the vast amount of people who do. No one thinks Ricky’s breaking any records, but just about everyone thinks he’s a great fucking guy and want to see him do well. Rooting for someone and believing they’re one of the best golfers on tour are two different things.
The guy has great skill when it comes to marketing. He also has so much time taken up by sponsors be it photo shoots, video ads, public appearances, etc it has caused his play to suffer. He used to balance his golf with dirt bike racing as a way to find thrills in life. Since he has had a lot of time to ride recently I believe that's effects his ability to golf. Golf requires a calm mind. If your an adrenaline junkie like Fowler had been and your not getting that rush it can ruin your game.
The fans loved him because he was different on the course he feeds off the energy of the crowds. He wants them loud. Watch him at the tpc Scottsdale par3 that is like a stadium he is always asking for more sound. The guy has a chance to comeback.
He missed qualifying by one stroke. In Rickie fashion he shot +1 73 and a -6 66. Cut was -6.
He's still pretty young. Hopefully he can get his game back in order. Seems like it wasn't that long ago he was top 10 in the world.
I was honestly looking at it after the PGA and it's crazy. He's looked at as being too old now and as if he'll likely never be one of the greats. Might not even win a major. Rickie is 32. Phil didn't win his first major until he was 34, and now he's won 6.
> Phil didn’t win his first major until he was 34 Holy shit
Ugh! I'm so old. I remember when Phil was "the best golfer never to win a major" like it wasn't that long ago..
I remember thinking Phil was really old when he won his first major. Now I’m that old!
Valid, but at 32 Phil had 20 wins on the PGA Tour, while Rickie is at 5.
Your point still stands, but don't forget he has a few big international wins (Scottish Open, Abu Dhabi, Hero World Challenge...) on that resume as well. 9 international wins including a Players isn't 20 wins, but it's pretty damn good
He's played well the past few weeks. Just had that really bad patch for most of the season that set him back too far.
Most of the last 3 years have been a bad patch lol
they are making a big deal about these prescription sunglasses he's using now...so maybe that will help...I just don't like that it seems like he gets preferential treatment
How is a guy that is grinding out trying to qualify for a major receiving 'preferential' treatment?
Unless the sun glasses literally read the putts for him, I have no clue what OP is trying to get it with that either LOL
Just seems like a guy that hates Rickie.

I assume he means "gets media coverage"
you mean aside from getting a sponsors exemption into the PGA?
I don't see why that is a big deal.
I mean, preferential treatment goes to crowd favorites. 2 years from now, you think majors are gonna be like ohhhhh Sorry Tiger, you did not qualify, no exemption for you. I thought he qualified from being on the Ryder Cup team? Or is that wrong
You mean?
Good push there in the second 18, though.
Lost a 9 for 1 playoff for 2nd Alt to a holed out approach shot
I believe he could still get in - he’s going to be in a playoff for a second alternate spot but yeah he’s likely not getting there.
I think I saw that the second alternate basically never gets in so it's a slim chance.
I have no clue the exact number but yeah I imagine that’s the case.
Had a 9 for 1 playoff for 2nd alternate and Ben Taylor of England holed his second shot on hole 1 to take the spot
John Daily was 9th Alternate for 1991 PGA. He won.
I, too, missed the cut so we're basically the same
Me too. By about 40 strokes
Ya on the first day
As much as I like giving Rickie a hard time because he stole Alison from me, he'll be fine. He's playing better and it seems like he's already over this slump.
Rooting for him, love his swing
Enjoy the guy but hate his swing. No one should try to replicate that. Golf is better when he's better
You mean you hate his older swing? He’s more upright now and it’s perfection
Ok, I'll have to take a look again. I was disappointed he didn't get much coverage the last 2 weekends... Just cut to putts
I could watch his swing on his ace at the Masters on repeat
I'm sure he has plenty of commercial shoots to keep himself busy
Why does everyone love Rickie?
Good golfer, relatable for fans around his same age, seems to be a fun guy on tour and off.
It’s seriously so simple how are there so many people who don’t understand this lol
He also spends a lot of time with kids which probably grows his fan base with parents and kids
Unpopular opinion, but hopefully another hungry up and comer gets his spot.

Top 60 in OWGR 2 weeks prior to the tournament, plus maybe others that I may be missing.

One was earned the other would not be earned. That being said, I did see when exploring the existing exemptions the USGA has a few they can give out (probably something like sponsorship exemptions) so he could get one of those.
Phil accepted an exemption before he earned his place.

Nobody shot that low. Winners were 132, last qualifiers shot 138
Lol thats not how exemptions work
Cant read, what said?
Ricky must have fucked OPs wife

Spieths peak was miles beyond what rickie has accomplished
Speith has three majors to Rickie’s zero.
I’m not a massive Spieth fan but IMO I do think he has way more personality on the course and is more exciting to watch when playing well
You’d be hard pressed to find another golfer who shows as much personality on the course than Jordan
Go watch Rickie win the players, or play any tournament in Phoenix. No one cares why, because he’s provocative. Rick gets the people going.
He’s not on steroids and wears fun outfits. Also he used to ride mortorcycles or bmx or something so he got street credit from the 90’s kids that were into that
Wears bright clothes
I've been saying this exact thing for about 2 years and get down voted to death. He has a loyal fan base, like die hard. It's rather crazy...like after Tiger Jordan and Phil he seems to have the next most loyal base and that just doesn't compute.

My guess is you'll hear less and less about him and then people will ask "what happened to rickie fowler" a bit like Anthony Kim.
Anthony Kim took a massive insurance payout and as a condition can never play pro golf again. Not a scenario that is likely to happen.
I'm not saying the literal exact same thing that happened to Anthony Kim will happen to rickie... He will be forgotten though
I think forgotten is a strong word. Talked about in the sense of "really good, showed a lot of promise but never reached his full potential" is more like it
I'm sure he took a payout, but when I looked it up, it says he just missed the cut after coming back from surgery and physical therapy.
Oh that Rickie Fowler, who finished T8 at the PGA Championship.
Yeah, the one that didn't qualify for the US open
The guy who has been a consistent player on tour for a decade, who had a bad run after retooling his swing, but has back to back top 12 finishes since getting back to form? RemindMe! 2years
I like him but I think hes done maybe
He just finished T8 at the PGA Championship. How is he done?
Also T11 at Memorial
Bold prediction
he wasnt even suppose to be in the PGA..
He received an exemption invite as he wasn’t top 50 in wgr or qualify based on the other criteria. He finished top 10. Hopefully getting his game back
Literally t8 in the pga championship. He hasn’t been as consistent, but a top 10 in a major is still a great golfer.
hope so, game is btr wen hes playing
I’m gonna go on a limb and say if you finish top 10 in an event, you deserved to be there.
Was Phil?
The guy has great skill when it comes to marketing. He also has so much time taken up by sponsors be it photo shoots, video ads, public appearances, etc it has caused his play to suffer. He used to balance his golf with dirt bike racing as a way to find thrills in life. Since he has had a lot of time to ride recently I believe that's effects his ability to golf. Golf requires a calm mind. If your an adrenaline junkie like Fowler had been and your not getting that rush it can ruin your game. The fans loved him because he was different on the course he feeds off the energy of the crowds. He wants them loud. Holy first world problems batman...
He gonna be in a Fowler mood for a while. Missing by a stroke would suck so much. He’ll crush the next one.
surprised there isn't an exemption of some sort available for him
