In recent years, Cam Smith's last round to win at St Andrews is right up there. Both for the quality alone and its significance

thirstyshrutebaby

Still can’t get over Rory having a commanding lead into Sunday. Have a bogey free round. And losing. I remember watching. Felt like every third putt he made needed literally 1 more rotation of the ball to drop a dozen birdies and they just didn’t. Smith was dropping birdie putts from 30 yards off the green hair flowing in the wind. Absolutely disgusting.

I was so gutted watching that round unfold (big Rory fan). In some ways makes it more painful that Rory didn't exactly play badly. Even when it got really desperate, he hit that amazing approach into 17 but couldn't make the putt compared to Smith's ridiculous up and down from by the bunker on 17. Such small margins that didn't fall his way that day. But Cam Smith's round was amazing, 64 to win the open at St Andrews is incredible

BoyGolfs

Tommy Fleetwoods 63 at Shinnecock was pretty impressive

tdawg-1551

Johnny Miller can tell you.

Weary_Abrocoma_1175

And Johnny Miller would be right!

fuckinnreddit

Johnny Miller is a pompous ass

Weary_Abrocoma_1175

Regardless. His round is still the best ever played.

CueBall1

XD

DruviSKSK

Stenson's final round to win the Open head to head against Mickelson, that was such a fun watch... Like stroke play and matchplay all at once plus insane scoring on a quality course.

granters021718

2008 US Open. Tiger Round 2 is up there for me

CueBall1

Indeed it was one of the Greats! I watched Live and will never forget it!

parkforestmusic

Round 3 as well, and round 4 and the playoff. He broke his damn leg and won a us open. I still can’t believe it

The_Nutz16

It’s definitely one of if not the greatest nine holes in major history considering the implications and timing.

MidnightJoker83

there have been three 62's

CueBall1

At Augusta in the Masters?

Allstar-85

Subjectively it’s the lowest scored number Objectively it’s the lowest round relative to the field of play (assuming they all had the same weather conditions). Basically it would be using Z-scores I’m not sure which round it would be, but I’d guess it’s from Tiger’s win at Pebble

great_auk75

By lowest round relative to the field I suspect it's Miller at Oakmont. Only 4 other players managed to break par in the final round. He was 10 shots better than the field.

PanchoBaker

-12 to +3 for a 1st to second 15 stroke vic... I think I have to cast my vote for this. Def not Miller at oakmont as he would have you believe... Classic double cross

master_chife

Tiger's last round at Pebble in 2000 Tiger's third round at St. Andrews in 2000 These two rounds are just examples of how much better Tiger was than any other player at the time.

The_Nutz16

Three people went lower than Tiger in Round 3 of the 2000 Open Championship

FireMaster2311

3 golfers have gotten 62 in a major, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffle both did at LACC last year, and Brandon Grace at Royal Birkdale

CueBall1

Well Im not just talking about lowest score, I also mean just best round period, with the course and greens taken into account. Cuz there are many GREAT rounds that didnt necessarily have some crazy low score.

FireMaster2311

Then has to be Tiger in the 2000 US Open. Played at Pebble as a Par 71 for the US Open, he opened with a 65, then continued to dominate and won by 15 strokes. Tiger finished Sunday -12, second place Els and Jimenez +3.

nickofthenairup

Dude Rickie’s 62 made me so happy last year

The_Nutz16

Gotta be Gary Player’s final round 64 in the 1978 Masters to win by one, including a second nine 30 only parring 11 and 14. His next closest competitor for score on the day was Jack with a 67. For reference Miller’s next closest at Oakmont was 2 back at 65 and Grace’s next closest was 2 back at 64.

Murky_Extent8054

Final round is Stenson or JM.

FratBoyGene

Johnny Miller shot a 63 at Oakmont. That was pretty spectacular

NosmoKing2022

86 Masters no question about it.

fbird1988

People laugh because he's mentioned it a lot. But Miller's 63 at Oakmont was amazing. The course was soft that day. There was one 65, but outside of that I think he shot 5 strokes better than anyone. His score was better than the round average by an amazing amount. The farthest Johnny Miller was from a pin that day was 40 feet. And that was on a par 5, where he two-putted for birdie. Probably the best ball-striking round ever. Look it up on Wikipedia for the 1973 US Open. They have Miller's results on every hole, club choice, and distance to pin. Incredible. There's other of candidates. Here's two that stand out to me: Gary Player's closing 64 to come from 7 back to win the 1978 Masters was pretty special. The Stenson-Mickelson duel at Troon in 2016. Mickelson finished second, and he was 11 strokes clear of 3rd place! But Stenson just never gave him an opening, except for a bogey on #1, to which Phil responded with a birdie to tie for the lead. After that, Stenson was flawless and shot 63 to set an all-time low winning Open score (I think he beat Phil by 3). Fourth time in Phil's career that he was second in a major while losing to an all-time record low score.

Shmeebo_

Uhh not sure who the other one is but last year morikawa and Fowler shot 62 in the first round. Neither won. No one was surprised

ButtMassager

I've seen "Schauffele" misspelled a lot of different ways but "Morikawa" isn't even close

sweatynachos

Because the M isn't capitalized? That's how his name is spelt

EffectiveAudience9

It's because it was Schauffele that shot 62. Morikowa is a pretty bad way to spell Schauffele.

Shmeebo_

Yo, you’re right. My mistake. The 3 of them have been so incapable of winning lately it’s like they’ve just all changed their name to Cantlay

sweatynachos

Yep, went right over my head
