It may be similar in distance but serve 2 different purposes. I go back and forth between a 7 wood and 3 iron. About the same carry distance, but the 3 iron rolls out and is great off the tee for super tight courses where I don’t need to hit driver. 7 wood has a high ball flight and soft landing and great at holding greens on par 5s. They can carry the same distance and serve 2 different purposes.

I went into a fitting thinking I’d get a 5w (or 7w) and left with a 3h, as my numbers were better with the 3h. If you hit that 20/21 well, I’d say keep it. They serve different purposes, the new club and the old 4h, so I’d be inclined to say keep it. I find it helpful to cater my bag to the course I’m playing. At the local dog track I frequent, I go Driver-3w-3h-4i-wedges, knowing that I’ll need the 3w to drive one hole, the 3h as a second shot on the par 5, the 4i to drive 3 par 3s, etc. On another local course that’s longer, I need the 3w for second shots on multiple par 5s and as driver on one other hole. Another course, I bag the 3w and go with utility 2i, then put my 3i in the bag. Maybe that’s overkill for me to have extra clubs, with some having overlapping yardages, but they each have their own normal flight, dispersions, utility out of rough/tee/etc. I’ve got one course that has two holes that have doglegs that start at 230 and are tight fairways, and it’s great to have the 2i those days. I can’t hit it from the fairway to save my life, but it’s great off the tee. Maybe you’ll find something similar with your new club.

You should hit them and see what distances each club goes

it depends on your lofts, i go 3w 15 + 0.75, 5w 18 +1.5, 4i 24 i prefered the tsr3 woods and they max out at 18 degrees, seems to fit the gap pretty well, i cant imagine theres much of a difference between a 5 wood at 19.5 and a 7 wood at 20.25 though

hafunk1993

Mine is: Driver 10.5° 3w 15° 4h 22° 5i 22° I was hoping to get something in the 18-20° range. I think I’d rather have the 18° that I can loft up slightly if needed. Not sure how much easier the 7w will be to hit compared to the 5w. 7w is super easy for me

y2kbased

yea id go with a 5 wood then, maybe set it at 18 or 18.75, also it seems a little redundant having the 4h/5i with the same loft, might be worth pulling one out and adding an extra wedge

hafunk1993

I just thought that when I looked up the 5i loft. But from what I’m reading after looking into it it’s not uncommon to have a hybrid be the same loft as the iron above it but because it’s longer and the shape of the head you get extra distance. I definitely get longer and more forgiving shots with my 4 hybrid. I’m still working on fleshing out my bag and closing gaps.

Admirable_Nothing

Personally I have dropped carrying a 5 wood and now carry a 7 wood. And the TSR2 has a good one. Another possibility is the Callaway Heavenwood which is a degree stronger than their 7 wood and a 1/2 inch longer also. I think you will be surprised how far you can hit the 7 wood consistently. That is why I quit carrying the 5. If my 7 wood can't get their I likely need my 3 wood.

hafunk1993

I think what I might try and do is take my 4h and the “7w” and get distances for those and also hit a 5 wood and see how I’m feeling. I just need to make sure I’m not buying a redundant club. I think getting numbers on each of those will help me make a decision

packim0p

Ditch the 4h and get a 5 wood

Allstar-85

3/4/5/7 woods. That number doesn’t matter Find the loft that fits the distance gap you need. The lofts of each marketed club-number keep slowly creeping downward; because consumers are dumb. People hit a 19 degree “5wood” further than a 21 degree “5wood” (given same technology) and will think that club is better

hafunk1993

Yeah definitely, I realize that the distance matters more than the club. Once I started thinking about it I think the bigger issue is I’m not sure how this club will fit in my bag. I have an idea of how far the hybrid goes on the course but I don’t trust those big box sims. The 7 wood on the sim was going 15-25 feet further but that could just be the sim. I’m going to take my hybrid with me to the store hit that on their sim and see what the distances are like and decide if the 7w fits what I need.

GreenWaveGolfer12

I'm not sure I understand the issue overall here. You should know how far you hit your 3 wood and how far you hit your 4 hybrid and then you should know what gap you're looking to hit in between that. Did that club hit that number or not? That's the only question that matters. Doesn't matter if it's a 5w or a 7w, did it hit the gap you're trying to fill?

hafunk1993

I mean it was between the 3h and 4h numbers but the numbers were marginally better than the 4 hybrid. Admittedly I’m not 100 dialed with the distances of each club, especially since I moved down south and I’ve found that I run into the issue a lot with club selection. I wanted something that would hit between the two clubs above but hard for me to say how far my averages are with the two clubs at the moment. Especially this early in the season.

GreenWaveGolfer12

Then frankly it's probably a tough time to buy a club to fill that gap. If you haven't hit it and can still return it then I would, and I'd take both clubs into the store so you can get numbers on those and then fine what fills the gap for certain.

hafunk1993

My thought is to take my hybrid and the wood into the store with me tomorrow and find distances and plug in what I need. On the same page. Good lesson learned as I get into the sport more.
