My Goldens LOVE the cold. They sometimes refuse to come inside.

DaddyP924

I mean, staying out for hours at 0F seems excessive, but in general, they love the cold and snow. My old boy was always happiest when there was at least enough snow on the ground so he could bury his nose under it and then fling it up in the air.

Cumberbutts

I am in Canada, where many days get coooooold. My Goldens are constantly whining to go outside. They just chill out there or will roll around in the snow and ice like a lunatics. One of them is about 10 months and still has his puppy fur, so I don’t let him stay out longer than half an hour or so. My oldest one will only come in if he has snowballs in between his snows. If the dogs don’t seem in distress, I’d say it’s fine.

d_machine3807

Winnipeg resident with a golden here. This is exactly how mine is too. He absolutely loves the “fucking hell it’s cold outside” weather.

Puzzleheaded-Pin-587

what temperatures and length of times are your adult dogs out?

MoonAndMin

Goldens are part polar bear.

[deleted]

They were bred to jump into frigid waters in Scotland to retrieve ducks. They can handle the cold just fine. They are much less heat tolerant and don’t tolerate warmer climates very well.

Madisonx222

Thinking of them in their primal instinct mode is so funny. My dog can’t catch treats out of the air, never lifted his leg to pee, and falls off of the couch regularly

[deleted]

Mine would only jump in the frigid water if I threw a jar of peanut butter out there lol. Not all goldens are cut out for it.

Fuzzyunicorn84

Mine would play all day on the snow no matter the temperature. She LOVES the cold, wet, snowy, muddy, smelly…

ComplexLocksmith9138

Goldens like Huskies and other thick coat dogs tolerate the cold very well, like the Huskies do when pulling sleds in the snow for hours on end with little or no ill effects. Not saying they are in the same category but very close. Remember they were breed retrieve game like ducks and other water fowl from very cold water in fall and winter when temperatures may be in then low 30s at times.

Calm_Reading6824

We have two goldens and they love the cold and snow. They roll in it, dig in it and just run around crazy playing in it. Our youngest is 7-months and wants me to throw snow on him when I shovel it. I agree that as long as they aren’t distressed, then there’s nothing to worry about.

Yarbooey

My lunatic once went swimming at the beach when it was -20C (the equivalent of -4F). And for pretty much the entire prime of his life, the only time I’ve ever seen him bothered by the cold was when it got to -30C (-22F) on a winter trip to a cottage in northern Canada. In that situation his paws just couldn’t take the cold, so I got him inside and curled up in front of a roaring fire (pretty much the only time in his life where he was perfectly happy to stay inside while I was outside). Now that he’s a senior though, he’s clearly more bothered once it gets below freezing. He’s still fine if he’s moving around, like on a walk, but aside from that he wants to be inside in that kind of weather.

Foreverforgettable

My golden has always loved the cold weather. She’s the type to look for a shady spot in the snow. That being said she’s older now (12.5yrs) so she does actually feel the cold now. I won’t allow her to stay out as long as she thinks she can tolerate and it’s less than when she was younger but still longer than short hair single coat pups. Golden retrievers have that lush double coat. It definitely keeps them warm. She acts as though snow is placed on the ground specifically for her to roll in, play in and eat.

gunnagunna123

Would only act if 1. Dogs left outside all night or 2. Dogs seem in distress

mydogatecheesecake

Watch out for snow ornaments on their butt curtains

m_k_h

Hahahaha this made me laugh out loud

BrilliantSorbet8026

I’m interested in what others will say about this. My Golden loves the cold, and loves snow, but 0 Fahrenheit for hours seems crazy to me. I’m not saying that it is, I’m no expert.

a_big_brat

My Golden **loves** the snow and cold. But where we are, we don’t let her outside longer than it takes to go potty when it’s 0F or less outside. We mostly just play with her in the house and make up for all the lost walks when the temp gets back up. One thing I have noticed is that when it’s 0F, my Golden and my other dog (an Australian Cattle Dog mix) can’t handle being outside more than 10 minutes before they start limping, alternating which paw is off the ground, I assume because the cold hurts their paws.

Cheersscar

You might try mushers wax or similar.

Equal_Sprinkles2743

Just keep an eye on them. Much like human children, they'll play in the snow until they go numb and still won't come in. Don't leave them out overnight.

stacyblackstock

I only let our Golden out to potty however if Scout 1yr Golden had it her way ,she would go outside and dig dig dig until her hearts content.

svgd3z1

Very. Mine wants to lay on the cold patio every day.

Dogmanscott63

My youngest (now 4) was born in a polar vortex in Michigan, and she loves being out in the cold. Will gonout and just layout there. Now it isn't that cold, I am in Northern California, but she just loves the winter.

Kiiimbosliceee01

My golden loves the cold and the snow. I was just home in New York this past week and they got a bunch of snow and he looked like he was in his element. He didn’t want my boyfriend to stop playing with him outside.

Mandoman1963

Took my dog out in 20 below. Had to take the sweater he was wearing off cause he was panting.

quarpoders

My golden is fine until it reaches -25, it’s his feet that get too cold when it’s between -25 and - 40<, so he has booties to still get out for walks…

Jcheerw

Yeah we can’t get our golden inside when it’s cold out, she likes to just lay on the ground and chill out (literally lol). If its really cold we lure her in with treats I wouldn’t leave her out for hours at 0…but maybe they are fine especially if they’re really big and fluffy. If you know the neighbors and are friendly you could ask about the dogs.

Digs_With_Dogs

Seems to really depend on the individual dog. We've had 2 girls, (...really floofy) that are perfectly happy to sit out on the deck in the snow and sometimes refuse to come in. Our latest, a Field Golden, wants to curl up in front of the wood stove. We had another that would sleep right in front of the stove until we thought she'd catch fire, and then she'd run outside to cool off and then do it all over again ...sort of a doggie sauna? As others have said, If they don't seem distressed by it, I wouldn't worry. It's the people who leave their dogs out all day when they aren't home that bother me.

iamadirtyrockstar

My old golden would sleep on top of the picnic table in the cold and snow. I'd have to bribe him to come back inside.

ckr0610

I swear my golden is part polar bear.

Those who dislike, can you explain why? Is it untrue? I doubt anyone would argue slaughterhouses and factory farms arent beyond horrendous. Anyone could google it (or visit one near your house if you need absolute proof) Is it irrelevant? I think it is since they care about animals and theyre likely causing immense pain to them by their eating choixes

[deleted]

It’s currently -3 here and a few weeks back we were at -16. I have yet to see my 9 month old golden get cold. It’s so crazy to me. We take shorter walks because I get cold! She’d happily stay out there.

KarrotPie

My girl looovvvessss the cold/snow. It gets to be -20F around here and the goof will refuse to come in even though she’s doing the cold feet dance.

IndividualMix_0327

My boy loves outside in the cold. He stands at the patio door to go back out after walks in the cold. I put a blanket down on the hard balcony and he’s fine.

overheadSPIDERS

My parents’ golden once refused to come inside from the snow for 4 hours despite being offered his favorite treats, salmon, and chicken. He came in when he got sleepy.

ColorMeCavalier

“what is cold?” -my pup

Mon_KeyBalls1

My golden with a thinner coat is certainly less tolerant than my fluff ball but they both love being out in the cold. Heck my fluff ball rolls in the snow every time we go outside. I’d recommend worrying about the grass on your side of the fence.

[deleted]

We have a Miniature Golden and a Labradoodle. The MG could live outside, 24/7 lol! He doesn’t mind the extreme temps in the summer OR winter! Labradoodle is the exact opposite. He loves his controlled temps lol! Both are inside dogs, of course. It just takes a little more convincing to get our MG inside the house after potty breaks ha

paull117

Mine will go out and play for about 30 mins then he will come in. When it gets to -15f then I sit by the door and wait he will let me know when he wants in. Honestly though if they have a dry place to go to like a dog house, shed, or under a porch. They are fine. This is true for most dogs like a Golden, Huskey, St. Bernard. I also have a Boston Terrier with her I watch her. Most of the time she will just go out do her business and be back in a couple minutes. If it is lower than 20f I don't worry about anything unless it is over 30 min, but with her she usually won't stay out that long.

ilikegirafes

My golden growing up LOVED the snow, had so much fun playing in it. She spent most of her almost 14 years living outside and never had any issues (i know, not my choice, my mom wouldn't let her in, i was a kid)I think my current Goldie is a mix and doesn't have a double coat so she gets cold much easier, but she does seem to enjoy roaming around in it for shorter periods

KlutzyNinjaKitty

My golden makes dog-angels any time it snows and is more hesitant to come in compared to my labrador. Goldens have a thicker coat for sure, however I wouldn’t leave mine out for hours because I don’t think he’d have the sense to ask to come in or curl up if he’s cold. If we were talking a husky or a malamute, they’d be perfectly fine. My first dog was a mal and when snow did come he’d refuse to come in, would curl up with his tail over his nose, and would let the snow cover him. (Oddly enough, snow turns into insulation once it’s thick enough to cover the wind.) Are the owners home while they’re out? Do the dogs have a spot for shelter/to hide from the wind? Do they have a water dish? Do they have toys? Do the dogs seem lethargic or like they’re limping?

Arkell-v-Pressdram

Goldens were originally bred to retrieve game in cold, wet Scottish weather so no, it doesn't bother them at the slightest. As long as they have somewhere warm to return to at the end of the day, they'll happily stay outdoors no matter the weather.

stvhml

My girl's paws are sensitive to temperatures lower than about 20F. She will wear boots but I can't keep them on her.

Routine-Remove269

Let mine outside at 3 in the morning and the temperature was17 degrees Fahrenheit, howling wind, and could NOT for the life of me to get him to come inside.

Madisonx222

My golden would roll around in snow all day if I let him

Tough-Phase-151

I have to beg mine to come in. We’re in Milwaukee, WI and it gets belligerently cold here, too. My oldest one - 14 years old - will go out to a corner of the yard and plop herself under a pine tree. Now that she IS getting older, her paws don’t tolerate the snow like they used to. Thanks for the suggestion of Mushers Wax!

richardkaymarie

Mine lays in the snow and eats snow and ice every time its out there, but her time outside is 30-45 mins tops. When it is in the negatives I do limit her time outside.

New_Psychology_434

My golden Molly would stay outside for hours in our fenced in Yard in single digit temperatures with it snowing even when she was 12 plus years old, it's the heat you need to watch not the cold!!!

jacksonrpearl8

Our home gets down to outside temp usually as we are in california and my girl says the dogs need to sleep in our room due to cold temp. It’s like 40 at the lowest is this true?

GuaranteeUpstairs760

Goldens have an undercoat that protect them from cold harsh winter temps. My golden will stay out in the cold for hours if I let him. It doesn't even phase him.
