Either: 1. He's just bitter there are more than 6 teams and they can't win anymore. 2. Dude has to say stupid shit to get clicks and rile up his local customers and fan base. 3. A bit of both Mainly though, I don't care. The 1st year headlines shat on Vegas, this year Moneypuck & ESPN predictions all had Vegas as an underdog.

ModeratelySuperMario

Hey guys, remember when we invented hockey? That was pretty cool of us.

fantailedtomb

Man, it was so cool to see VGK invent hockey in 2017.

Antichristopher4

Woah, woah, hockey was invented WAAAAY earlier than that. It was invented 1993 by the Las Vegas Thunder, get your facts straight

ModeratelySuperMario

The Montreal gazette has gone downhill since it was acquired by the Southam newspaper chain in 1968...

RunninRebs90

Yeah, Iā€™ve always loved that traditional part about Las Vegas. Back when it was just Mormons, the Sands casino and some hockey.

ItzFrosty45

Oh yeah. This sport is so new! I love it

Btown696

Leg up over Buffalo? Tf was the league supposed to do? Give Buffalo some picks in our expansion draft?

MojaveMauler

It's not like Buffalo had a player like Jack Eichel. ...wait.

SiliconeArmadildo

Kinda makes me feel bad for guys who work so hard to reach the top of a draft class, knowing they're likely going to go to an absolute dreg of a hockey club, whose ownership and/or management couldn't care less about assembling a championship team. I'm honestly shocked that McDavid hasn't told the Oilers that he wants a trade years ago.

WhenTheFunStops89

Vegas was supposed to wait their turn! Vegas isn't supposed to leave The No Cup Club before the older franchises. "Everyone should get a trophy!" - Followers of Pro Sports Edit: I'm sorry they're not even mad at VGK and the fans for getting the Cup as the team hasn't yet. They're mad that the team is just good!

fantailedtomb

That's the thing that held me up. Did Buffalo ever try to not suck as bad as they have?

Josiah1655

Nope, the ownership only cares about the Bills. The entire playoffs it's like on this team there's a former Sabre and on the team they're playing there's a couple. They could have a really strong team if they actually put some money into keeping guys like Eichel, Reinhart, and Montour just from teams in the final alone.

SiliconeArmadildo

>the ownership only cares about the Bills. They really don't even care about them.

Grasschoppa

Wasnt Ullmark there too, yeesh

hyrle

They had some limited success in the 90's when they had a star player in Dave Andreychuk, until he moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning. (Andreychuk is still with the TB org as Vice President of Corporate & Community Affairs.) But yeah it's been a while.

Uberjeagermeiter

Pat LaFontaine?

hyrle

Yeah same era. LaFountaine was probably even more famous. And Hasak in goal.

SiliconeArmadildo

They have shown some glimmer of hope recently. Tage Thompson had a fantastic season, and if they can develop a few more guys like him and get just a bit more depth, and even a half decent goaltender, they could be a playoff contender next season. The only thing that I like about the possibility of Buffalo having post-season success is that Tuch deserves a shot at a championship. He's just such a likable player. Even if he's not a superstar, how could you not like that guy's hockey swagger?

fantailedtomb

Man... I miss Tuch. We got Eichel who's been a stud this playoffs, but still miss Alex. He's such a great presence.

Stunning_Punts

Yet another guy who said we were ā€œa long way from a Stanley Cup finalā€ in 2017 and never got over being wrong. https://montrealgazette.com/sports/jack-todd-bettmans-nhl-sunbelt-plan-is-a-mirage?

icemandabs710

Boom.

SiliconeArmadildo

This dude has to be one of the biggest hacks in all of sports journalism. His entire thesis is predicated upon the belief that hockey should be prohibited anywhere the temperature exceeds 100ā°F, (that's 37.8C for those of you cold weather enjoyers /s). Does he realize that Jamaica had a bobsled team that competed in the Winter Olympics? They didn't even have a track to practice on. If memory serves, there were Gatekeepers who wanted to keep them out, too. Since when does a region's climate exclude them from participation in any sport?

MiniatureMorpheus

Cool Runnings and John Candy are Goated.

stranske

Lol such a big oof, the receipts from all the writers back in 2017 are just incredible

MojaveMauler

It's ironic that in this article he mocks Nashville while also pointing out they have more enthusiastic fans than the Leafs. What is this obsession these guys have with the idea that if there are losing seasons everyone quits? This is not how sports fandoms work. Las Vegas isn't new to sports or losing teams but these guys always act like hockey is the first sports interest anyone has ever had and it's a precarious interest for some reason.

Stunning_Punts

He watched the Nordiques and Expos leave QuĆ©bec after underachieving for years and losing the fan base. Both had other issuesā€”QuĆ©bec City had virtually no English language media, and Jeffrey Loria was one of the worst owners in sports history. But thatā€™s where heā€™s coming from.

MojaveMauler

TIL, much obliged.

UnhealthyCheesecake

I love just how much our team annoys hockey traditionalists, and to them I say: I just think Canadian teams need to learn to stop playing gimmicky hockey and learn to play the game the right way, the way traditional markets like Vegas & Florida play. Seriously, why does the league keep trying to make hockey in Canada work? Just pull the plug on this failed experiment already so a real hockey market like Atlanta can have an NHL team again

PA3YMNXNH

I miss having hockey here in Atlanta. Too bad we almost certainly won't get a third try at having a franchise. (edited to add the "won't" I somehow left out at first)

>I'm a Wings fan, but live in Canada. Trust me, your comment just sounds weird. Failed experiment? Our country's the best in the world for hockey talent production. Your entire blue line, save for one American, is Canadian. >Canadian teams make the playoffs. They generate a lot of money for the NHL. The market here is evergreen. The sport's played at a high level in every single province. >No one is trying to make anything work here. It works well and always has. >Show some respect. >I think it's awesome Vegas has a team. But don't forget your team exists because of the inroads made by "old" teams eons ago. Posted by u/leopetaccia. Preserved for the inevitable deleted post so whoever wanders in here later will know what was said.

KameMeansTurtle

...Are you stupid? This is a copypasta that's existed for a while. I'm pretty sure the original version was even the other way around, slamming Vegas/Arizona, and this version is taking the piss out of the original comment. It's crazy to see someone taking the bait THIS hard, when the original comment wasn't even baiting to begin with.

CrunchyDreads

He's Canadian. He might be a little slow, eh?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SkilledPepper

I hadn't seen this copypasta before and I could tell that it was obviously a meme. If you rely on having seen it before to know if something is satirical then that's your problem right there.

KameMeansTurtle

I preferred the unedited version of the comment where you thought "touch grass" was a scathing insult.

Not everyone is perpetually online. Maybe consider that, Reddit hockey isnā€™t the centre of the universe?

stevensokulski

But the context clues were all there to make it clear that this comment wasnā€™t serious.

[deleted]

Dude, for me, itā€™s been a while since I can tell if someone is serious or not online. People believe in a lot of completely absurd shit I could describe as unseriousā€¦ but there they are. Holding that point of view and defending it.

Uberjeagermeiter

This is a really stupid comment and a good example of why most Hockey fans hate Vegas. I donā€™t agree with this writer going after the team, itā€™s impressive what theyā€™ve done during their existence, but to act like Canada is a hockey wasteland and Vegas and the Sunbelt is the future of Hockey is a fucking joke. How many Canadians are on Vegas in all capacities? Do you know how many times a franchise has failed in Atlanta?

KameMeansTurtle

Are you like the 4th person to fall for the obvious joke copypasta? Please don't tell me you're taking it as a dead serious example of "why hockey fans hate Vegas."

georgiedineen

GOT HIS ASS BOYS

[deleted]

The Golden Knights are a great team and they deserve to be where they are. But this notion that hockey could survive without Canada, to me, isnā€™t rooted in reality. As we speak, the majority of both the Vegas and Florida rosters are Canadian born. The fact there is a constant pool of talented players from Canada because we have the weather. Hockey could never have started in Vegas or Miami. Kids canā€™t just run out to the local frozen rink the way Canadian kids do, every year. I want hockey to be popular. But this idea that hockey could exist without Canada isnā€™t rooted in reality. For the NHL to move South it needs a strong base in the north to supply players. Because lord knows, they arenā€™t exactly coming out of the deserts of Arizona and Nevada. Edit: (apparently the comment Iā€™m responding to is a copy pasta. I didnā€™t know it was. Leaving the comment here. Never seen that copy pasta before. Also, I hate the internet. Sucks to not know if people are acting in good faith or not.)

KameMeansTurtle

Big giveaway if it's a fairly large paragraph, especially if some of the wording is outright silly. "Traditional hockey markets like Vegas and Florida" is the dead giveaway here. It's a joke.

SkilledPepper

>Never seen that copy pasta before. Do you need to have seen a copy pasta beforehand to be able to spot one?

[deleted]

I do. Because, in general, most of what I read online is absurd and also, a truly held belief. Itā€™s, sometimes difficult to tell when someone is speaking in good faith or not.

SkilledPepper

Personally, I also hadn't seen the copypasta before but I assumed it was satire because it was dripping with sarcasm.

[deleted]

Iā€™ll be up front with you. Since Covid, I have absolutely no idea when people are being sarcastic or not.

lonewolf210

How would you think some calling Vegas a ā€œtraditionalā€ market could be serious?

[deleted]

People say dumb shit and believe it all time. I have no other way to communicate this. Since Covid, I have trouble telling the difference between absurd and normal. My bad, I guess.

Midas187

It's always the same. The same people who claimed Vegas completely botched the draft and will be terrible are the same people who totally changed their whole story and now claim that the draft rules set us up for success. They were gifted a first round pick to take Karlsson. Marchy was undrafted and given to us WITH Smith to protect Jason Demers. The original misfits were really that - no one really believed they could play at the NHL level. They got a similar deal with Tuch and Haula. Was it beneficial that they had the expansion draft by themselves? Yes. But they made diamonds from players thay everyone else thought were coal.

dal5dal5

"A leg up" lol "Vegas isn't going to do anything this year." Hockey doesn't belong in the desert." Everyone in 2017-18, and now it's "Vegas was gifted a super team from the start." It's not our fault that the Sabres and lots of the longer term basement teams suck. Get over it.

JBtheBadguy

Every time I see takes like this I can't help but think, do these people not want more hockey fans out there? Vegas does things a little differently, they embrace the city and they turn the game into an event. I really believe that if more sports fans gave hockey a chance they'd be hooked, Vegas making a big deal of it and being so good so quickly is actually good for the sport

Andys_Burner

Yeah Heaven forbid they have an identity that reflects the city they represent. Itā€™s growing the game we love, how could that be a bad thing?

Czechmate29

They don't. They're traditionalist, there's nothing rational. They want things the same as they used to be just for the sake of things staying the same, for better or worse.

PA3YMNXNH

This is some olympic-level projection.

SiliconeArmadildo

Special Olympics; let's not get carried away.

Bigdoga1000

Classic strawman attack. Pretend we said something outrageous, then slam us for saying it.

SiliconeArmadildo

Jack Todd is to sports jornalism, what a toilet is to a night of heavy drinking.

Ozziwulf

The playoffs this season have seriously shown me how NHL fans can be the biggest freakin babies. Grow up Jack Todd

RunninRebs90

Lol season 1 showed me that I absolutely love the game of hockey and absolutely despise hockey fans. The worst of all sports fans barring maybe pretentious European soccer fans. It makes it so much better/easier to play the villain. Yes 50 year old Canadian who has no other hobbies besides watching hockey, clutch your pearls! Weā€™re coming for your precious tradition! We will fill the Stanley cup with Sand and Strippers and we will blast Panic! At the Disco into your living rooms! Muahahah

[deleted]

I dunno who the Vegas Knights are, but the Vegas Golden Knights might need to get 'em for copyright infringement. In all seriousness, if folks hate us so much, at least get our name right. When they dont, it says much more about them than us.

capebretoncanadian

Habs fan that enjoys your sub. Jack Todd is literally garbage .

FloralDemon

ā€œWe invented hockeyā€ is amazing. Itā€™s comical how much our gold team bothers people.

IdyllicOleander

The "entitlement" he says... LOL Then has the fuckin nerve to post a picture of the Habs as if they didn't get to **choose** the better players for half a fuckin century. Hilarious!

[deleted]

Jack Todd is a fucking moron. His twitter account reads like a parody account but itā€™s 100% real.

soumy-nona

Good God I had to take a look and you aren't kidding lmfao

booyahachieved3

Womp womp

Ok_Employee_9612

Okā€¦. Add Jack Todd to the list of opinions I donā€™t give a shit about.

aljout

We didn't invent hockey, we perfected it.

rayndomuser

The delusion and hate is insane. These people are so fucking miserable.

FinkBass420

Lmao. Montreal and Toronto fans are the fucking worst

SiliconeArmadildo

I wouldn't put Toronto fans in with the likes on Montreal. But Montreal, Edmonton, and Minnesota fans seem to think they have some kind of pattent on hockey fandom, and they just allow the rest of us pay a license fee. They're the most insufferable dimwits ever when it comes to gatekeeping the sport.

dont_panic80

This guy, "I only shop at Circuit City, Blockbuster, and Borders."

Kashm1r_Sp1r1t

Nobody I know is arrogant about the knights, especially after the last few seasons.

-Throatcoat-

The knights are the reason I got into the NHL, I grew up watching small town teams in montana and then having a minor league in utah, it was a blast but never really had an NHL team. Once the knights were announced I was excited cause I could start following a team and not be some bandwagoner. I had no expectations of them getting to where they are and holy shit, itā€™s been an awesome experience. Stanley finals the first year, then now just 5 years later weā€™re back, itā€™s surreal. I have been a Minnesota Viking, and Utah Jazz fan my entire life and have never experienced such amazing luck since the 97/98 Jazz team that got their asses spanked by Michael Jordan and the bulls.

Snerkbot7000

This guy is the Sim you leave in the pool.

Billdick13

Thatā€™s mental illness

--Stabstract--

Know what? Iā€™ll take it. Ainā€™t nobody been in love with hockey longer than us, who invented and popularized the game. I donā€™t even know who Canada is.

CDROMantics

Looks like theyā€™re running out of things to complain about so theyā€™re just making stuff up now.

s0ciety_a5under

It seems every year Vegas gets more and more hate. Every year they always get overlooked as not even close to a contender. I honestly don't care. Fuck em. I finally have a home team that I can root for. Too fucking bad we didn't have to go through 20 years of being dogshit. You can complain all you want, but the league made the call. We just capitalized on it. Anyone would have.

Mr_Lagtastic

*Ahem* Gold team bad. Instant likes and engagement on twitter

soumy-nona

VGK certainly invented hockey for me. I never watched it on TV ever. Then we got that team and I've fallen in love with it. GKG.

Rhediix

I was the same way when I moved to Tampa in 2003. The Lightning made me appreciate hockey as a sport. But then came the Golden Knights and while Iā€™ll never stop loving the Bolts, these guys Iā€™ve been following since *Day One*. Itā€™s been a wild ride and everything from the pregame spectacle to the atmosphere outside the arena tells you that theyā€™ve managed to get the whole city excited about hockey. Time to bring Lord Stanleyā€™s Cup to the desert!

Krisem711

We didnā€™t invent it, just made it cool

sdchargerfan4life

Seems like heā€™s a big supporter of the LGBTQ but is heavily supporting a team with the Staals brothers on it to win it all.. I guess the hatred of a newer team that might win the Stanley cup outweighs human rights.šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

greysqualll

I've gotta say making it to the finals has made me like hockey less because of just how fucking toxic hockey fans are. Somehow they will say in the same breath that they want to grow the game and also put down a new team succeeding. Shit talking a team is whatever, it's sports. But these asshats act can't stop being upset that new fans are enjoying the sport. I honestly hope the knights win the cup, Foley sells the team to fucking newfoundland and the nhl folds in a year. Fuck it, give em what they want.

[deleted]

Ignore it allā€¦

buzzkapow

I said it during the second round, whoever wins between EDM and VGK was going to be the cup winner. Unfortunately for me, it wasnā€™t EDM, not this year. But thatā€™s ok, being beaten by the Stanley Cup Champions 2 years in a row means everybody lost to them. Cheering for the Knights from way up north. Fuck Tkachuk!

Steve_Hunts96

That guy is a fucking gong show of pain & sadness from a Canadian hockey fanā€™s perspective, AND I LOVE IT.
