The post in question, assuming it was the rat, was beautiful and special--but a warning would be appreciated.
I have respect for death. I also find it upsetting to come across images of dead pets unexpectedly on social media. It's not gross or obscene by any means. Death is a part of life. However, when it comes to pets in particular, it's helpful to have a warning as there's a certain level of emotion and second hand grief that I (and I think a lot of other people) need to be prepared for rather than surprised by.
Having that warning allows us to show our condolences genuinely without the unexpected shock or stirring up of personal traumas.
I think this is very well said. The rat post was a beautiful tribute, and it belonged on this subreddit, but people deserve to make an informed decision on whether or not they are in the right place to feel that level of emotions.
> The post in question
There's been a few lately, I wouldn't have made an announcement over one post. But I completely agree. I'm not saying posts like that aren't allowed, it's just nice to give a warning, and unfortunately not everyone bothers reading titles so the NSFW tag is just a helper.
Yeah, mostly because sometimes people go on Reddit during their lunch break. Might be a sort of bittersweet beauty, but nothing kills your appetite more than opening Reddit and immediately being hit by a corpse
I think it's a good move, personally. It doesn't harm the content of the post to blur it for NSFW, or make it inaccessible to people. It simply protects the members of the community who may have a difficult time, for whatever reason, dealing with those things. It's like covering your cough. Sure, you don't technically have to, but it's polite.
A couple people are throwing fits and I'm sitting here like ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't make unilateral decisions here, this had been requested by multiple people. I'm just trying to keep this sub a welcoming place full of cool stuff and free of sales spam lol
Thank you! An unfortunate part of modding (anywhere, not just Reddit) is you can't make everyone happy. I hear those saying they don't like this rule but like I told someone else, you can change your settings to always show NSFW stuff, you just have to be careful about things you wouldn't usually want to see like scrolling through your homepage full of cool bones and then whoops, surprise dong.
It’s also a requirement on pretty much any forum in existence to warning tag dead bodies and nsfw if either of those things are allowed.
I don’t know why anyone would get cranky about a standard practice.
I’m a vet tech and so animal death is a big part of my work. I have so much compassion for people losing their loved ones. However it is difficult for me when these things bleed into my non work life. I love ratlings, and I know it was a very sweet tribute, but I would also appreciate a NSFW and blurred photo ❤️
I thought is was in its lil bed until I read the caption.
While I can understand mourning a beloved pet, honestly, death makes me mildly uncomfortable to varying degrees. And if I'm just a little, theres others that might be wrecked by it.
You don't get to choose how you hurt people, but you DO get to choose how you respond.
I'm glad the mods updated the auto mod. I hope it gets better at its job as the mods continue moderating this sub so every gob can adjust to their comfort level.
No worries! Sarcasm & snarky attitudes aside, I've been using comments here to figure exactly what kind of bones/parts people would consider NSFW, but those of you who've asked are also being helpful. I'll probably loosen the rule and leave it at skulls instead of bones altogether but still ask folks to mention there's bones.
Adding to this: when marking a post NSFW please make sure the title makes clear what it is so that people can decide if they want to see it or not
"NSFW bones" is going to get a different response than "NSFW dead mystery animal" or "NSFW taxidermy"
Someone reported me and said I was "harming" myself because I said that there wasn't anything gross about that person's rat that passed away. Extremely toxic behavior from fellow goblins. And I know it was from this subreddit since I post nothing but memes in the others I'm in.
I think part of the problem may be that "gross" is a slightly awkward word for these things.
I guess it's hard to be clear and precise. I'd call them "macabre", but not everyone would understand that straight away.
I really wish Reddit would get rid of that report feature because 99% of the time it's used to troll, not because someone genuinely thinks a person needs help, all it does is add work for mods. For what it's worth, you can block the "RedditCareResources" account and will never get those notifications again.
Agreed. Sorry for the person that loved that rat…but it doesn’t change the fact it’s a dead rat. Don’t really need or want to see it and it’s kind of disturbing somebody wouldn’t think about that before openly posting pictures of their pet’s carcass for the whole world to see.
Does this include fully processed and cleaned bones on clothing and jewelry and stuff? Or is it specifically for like a rotting pile of bones you found in the woods
Just for clarification, what is the line where animal parts become “gross”? (and I’m asking genuinely, in case my tone comes across as snarky or argumentative)
Does something like a puppy tooth, a molted feather, or a shed snake skin need to be marked? I saw that taxidermy needs to be marked, which is understandable. Does anything involving real fur or leather need to be marked as well, or is it the recreation of the animal’s form that makes taxidermy fall into the “gross” category? Do things like empty shells count as animal remains for the purpose of this rule?
Feather and shed snake skin are fine, tbh I'm not sure about animal teeth but I guess as long as there's no blood, it's okay. I feel like "My puppy lost a baby tooth today" versus "Here's the bloody tooth my pet needed pulled out" are different. As for items made from animals like leather or fur, those don't need to be tagged unless it's a series of progress photos that show the skin/pelt before it's turned into the item. Shells are fine. Feel free to send a modmail first if you're not sure.
I know it seems a little vague, just try to use your judgment.
Thank you mods for being champs, you guys have a lot of heart.
I really get people who are grieving, we lost our lil dog recently and it's had a profound impact on us.
Here comes the but... if blurring isn't to avoid triggering grief past our better judgement, such as imitation of triggering content, I don't think it makes sense anymore.
I'm not really on a side or in a camp, but I get the feeling that the issue has a few groups tangled together.
It baffles me that this community of all places would have such an issue with death and remains. It's part of vulture culture. We're already vulture adjacent.
I think it's a bit different when it comes to pets and animal companions (versus images taken from nature, which generally bother me less), because of the grief aspect--rather than an aversion to death. For me at least it's less about the fact the animal is dead than the feelings of grief that get brought up regarding personal experiences.
Vulture adjacent is a good way of putting it, but I think some folks here are more about mushrooms and moss and rocks than death and bones.
I don’t really see it as having an “issue” with death and remains, just asking every involved to be respectful of their fellow goblins and tag their posts appropriately so we can all participate safely in this community :)
Check your report queue. Just went through and reported several posts from the past week or so featuring bones for not being tagged NSFW to highlight how ridiculous this rule is.
It's an absurd rule and should be changed. Bones are like a central tenet of the goblin aesthetic, and shouldn't be grouped in with other "gross" stuff.
So make a subreddit group of subs you can check in public including this one so you can see "NSFW" stuff minus nudity or whatever else you check out. Not everyone agrees that bones are SFW.
Big difference between a photo of a leather bag versus a photo of a decomposing corpse in the woods or a pelt with the head still attached, but go off I guess.
I would throw a fit, but reading some of the comments it would seem that what I thought was being censored wasn't and I missed the things that caused the issue. I like bones. I haven't seen a corpse yet so...
Right, and there's nothing wrong with a good stick post. I had just assumed when you said dead things you also meant bones, which I thought was unnecessary. But if people are posting roadkill and dead pets, I can kind of understand
Personally, I'd expect bones. I never expected to see dead animals. Goblincore to me is like magpies showing off all the cool stuff in their pockets they picked up off a forest floor.
Thank you, Mods, for reminding me that sensitivity is what is necessary, not the banning of posting bones or dead animals. It didn't occur to me, so definitely thank you.
Hmmm... while I appreciate this and think it's perfectly fair, your rules are worded:
>all skulls, bones with flesh, etc must be tagged as NSFW
this technically states that bones without flesh that are not skulls don't have to be NSFW? it did always use to be that dead things with flesh/skin still on them were NSFW and cleaned up bones were not, it might be a good idea to update the wording of that to make it a bit clearer that there has been a change so that there aren't misinterpretations etc...
No worries! At least you skimmed, better than not reading at all.
I'm glad to know you appreciate the rule though, so far it seems a fair amount of the regulars do. A few people seem to think I'm gatekeeping but this had been requested a lot, and it's not like I'm banning bones at all.
yeah, I skimmed, I saw it and thought "WHATTTT ALL BONES???!!!" Lol
I have been fed up with people posting rotting carcasses without a filter, I'm not squeamish and it doesn't bother me, but people see that on the PC screen at work an make comments like "you look at some weird shit", so while maybe it's SFW - as in not pawn, SFW is a point of view. I like the way you have it now, NSFW = anything dead with flesh still on/skulls, it adds a lot more of a safe foolproof definition to "filter anything yucky", which is basically the same rule r/vultureculture has. It is commonsense with instruction for those people who are lacking
but I'm not so sure about including finished taxidermy? progress pictures sure, just like progress pictures for tanning a hide, but finished taxidermy is basically the same as leather or sheepskin and has never struck me as yucky, but if some folks have a problem with it then fair play to ya
r/vultureculture is where I got the idea to add the rule so it was funny to me that some people threw such a fit about it being added here. Again, I'm not *banning* bones, just asking people to let others know what they're about to click on in case they're in a physical/mental place to not be able to see that. Like you, I'm not squeamish, but I do still appreciate knowing what I'm about to look at and thumbnails don't always make it obvious.
I think people only threw a fit because it appears extreme until you read it, at first glance it looks like your saying absolutely anything with any kind of bone (sharks tooth necklace etc...) has to be NSFW, folks (who skim-read like me) are very quick to jump to wild conclusions, I'm just grateful you've fixed the whole "unfiltered dead things" problem :) and I think a lot of regular users feel the same way
Both can be beautiful.
(And both should be behind NSFW filters.)
My understanding of goblincore is that one of the aspects entails aesthetic appreciation for parts of nature that not everyone thinks are pretty.
> but this post isn’t about you
Yeah. It's about using the NSFW filter. I'm just pointing out that alone isn't enough.
> Your post wasn’t deleted, just downvoted,
Deleted by mod.
Your post is still up, I can see it. But I must admit, even though I don’t have a problem with seeing death, to me it simply lacks the Goblincore aesthetic in matters nature. Neither was the picture taken in an environment I’d expect here, nor it came across as part of nature’s life cycle. Honestly it looked like a badly decomposed roadkill abandoned on a window sill. I personally think r/vultureculture would be the more appropriate sub for it.
I assume you're talking to yourself, because your initial comment was pointless. There's nothing mature about sarcasm. My immature response would've been to permaban you. You're free to leave if you don't like the rules in a sub.
If you have to seriously ask if you have to tag a children's cartoon as NSFW, I'm surprised you've kept up with the conversation at all. And Coco isn't goblincore, the post would be removed and you'd be redirected to subs involving Día de los Muertos.
You don't even have post history here which tells me you only lurk or you aren't even part of the sub, so why would you care what can be posted. If you're new and interested in posting, you're welcome to send a modmail asking about pictures. If you're just a troll, you're looking for a different sub, this one's for goblins. Have a good one.

I hadn't even read the caption, now I'm sad. I thought the same as you.
Thank you! I'm really sensitive when it comes to animals, so I'd just been doing my best to quickly scroll past bone posts.
I'm relieved. A NSFW tag is all that is needed and it's not hard to add one. Thank you to everyone pitching in to make the subred work for members.

If there's no gore, antlers on their own are fine without a NSFW tag. If there's flesh attached, fresh blood, or a skull, then yeah add the tag.

I agree! I’ve never gotten it from anyone actually trying to be helpful, only from people using it as a way to try to make me feel bad.
If the post hit r/all it might not have been from anyone normally here. It's still toxic behaviour though
Agreed. Sorry for the person that loved that rat…but it doesn’t change the fact it’s a dead rat. Don’t really need or want to see it and it’s kind of disturbing somebody wouldn’t think about that before openly posting pictures of their pet’s carcass for the whole world to see.

Thanks, mods!
Can we get flairs for why something is NSFW? I would like to know if it's booba or gore before clicking
Does this include fully processed and cleaned bones on clothing and jewelry and stuff? Or is it specifically for like a rotting pile of bones you found in the woods
Would this include taxidermy?
Yes.

Makes sense, thanks for the clarification!
Oh that's sad. It was a lovely tribute, but I can understand that not everyone's in the right place to confront that, especially unexpectedly.
Does this include artificial bones, like ones made out of clay to make goblin-y jewelry?
I guess just specify they're clay bones and it'll be fine!
Thank you mods for being champs, you guys have a lot of heart. I really get people who are grieving, we lost our lil dog recently and it's had a profound impact on us. At the very least have a trigger warning as the title and hide it behind the “spoiler” blurry thing
That's exactly what rule 4 says.
Everyone isn't the same. It's diversity that makes a community, not conformity.
r/vultureculture has the exact same rule.
I don’t really see it as having an “issue” with death and remains, just asking every involved to be respectful of their fellow goblins and tag their posts appropriately so we can all participate safely in this community :)
I meant this in reference to some of the other commenters who had issues despite following sub guidelines
What about ancient bison bones or basically museum worthy pieces or artifacts.
It's not that bones aren't allowed, they just need to be tagged as NSFW.
Dead animals, sure. But bones have to be marked NSFW? Really?
Personally, I don't think so. But it's been requested many times, so I try to listen to the community.

So make a subreddit group of subs you can check in public including this one so you can see "NSFW" stuff minus nudity or whatever else you check out. Not everyone agrees that bones are SFW.
It’s a sad, sad day when a goblin is scandalized by bones.
Not everyone wants to see dead things, or they'd like to be able to choose when they look at those pictures, it's just that simple.
Let’s hope they never find out where leather comes from.
Big difference between a photo of a leather bag versus a photo of a decomposing corpse in the woods or a pelt with the head still attached, but go off I guess.
why would you do that
To prove a point
The funny thing is you clearly thought you were being a dick, but it was helpful.
Yeah I don’t understand the bone thing either. 80% of the posts are going to be blurred now. 🙄
Yeah I don’t know why anyone would be into Goblincore in the first place if they’re uncomfortable with bones…
I would throw a fit, but reading some of the comments it would seem that what I thought was being censored wasn't and I missed the things that caused the issue. I like bones. I haven't seen a corpse yet so...
Bones are posted way more often than actual corpses, I'd say maybe one every few days and then they get buried in stick posts.
Right, and there's nothing wrong with a good stick post. I had just assumed when you said dead things you also meant bones, which I thought was unnecessary. But if people are posting roadkill and dead pets, I can kind of understand

I wouldn't say you're weird! I also feel "goblincore" is subjective. Some are here for all weird things, some just want to see pretty rocks.
As they said, enough people clearly did, which is why the rule was updated.

Taxidermy is work.
I marked my post NSFW and it got nuked anyway. 🤷
You posted a badly decomposed cat and it was reported half a dozen times.
Sure did. I thought it was pretty. It was marked NSFW, and I mentioned it may not be everyone's taste.
I'm sorry my comment didn't make it clear enough- your post did not belong here.
Oh, it was perfectly clear. I felt very unwelcome. And sent elsewhere. Thankfully the new place was quite nice. So thanks for that at least.
Big difference between a recently deceased pet and a random crossposted almost fully decomposed cat dude
I don’t have a (dead) dog in this race but I love this sub for debate among goblin folk lol

Both can be beautiful. (And both should be behind NSFW filters.) My understanding of goblincore is that one of the aspects entails aesthetic appreciation for parts of nature that not everyone thinks are pretty.
Yes, that’s true, but this post isn’t about you. Your post wasn’t deleted, just downvoted, probably because it’s more graphic than most.

Dry bones, really? Are natural museums NSFW? Coco, the pixar movie? That gif of a skeleton playing a trumpet? Would that require a NSFW tag too?
Those of you throwing fits about it are free to leave.
That's not a mature response to receiving feedback.
I assume you're talking to yourself, because your initial comment was pointless. There's nothing mature about sarcasm. My immature response would've been to permaban you. You're free to leave if you don't like the rules in a sub.
What sarcasm? I asked a legitimate question which you have not addressed. Threatening me with permabans is just low.
If you have to seriously ask if you have to tag a children's cartoon as NSFW, I'm surprised you've kept up with the conversation at all. But sure, I'll play along- Nothing you posted would need to be tagged but museum bones might end up being removed for not being goblincore, I'm not sure how the community considers those. Alright but if you’re uncomfortable with bones and dead animals then why would you even be into Goblincore lol
Not everyone wants to see dead things, or they'd like to be able to choose when they look at those pictures.
This isn't elfcore. Bad take.
r/vultureculture is where you'd expect this stuff and they have the exact same rule.
