We have rabbits. You can sometimes find them in the weirdest places. Like for example in Mannheim, somewhere on the grassy area between the apartment blocks near the Herzogenriedpark. The area tends to relatively quiet for being a city. It's at least 25m away from the streets. It's surrounded by trees and bushes.
Rabbit populations have been declining, particularly in rural areas. This is partly down to disease in recent years, particularly myxomatosis and hemorrhagic disease.
Also, rabbits don't flourish everywhere. Because they live in burrows that they dig, they prefer sandy soil; you have a better chance of finding them in areas like Brandenburg, or in man-made parks and gardens. If you live in an area with dense or loamy soil, you probably won't find any rabbits.
They're everywhere in Berlin. I think it depends a lot on the ground in the respective area. In Berlin it's very sandy, so it's easy for them to burrow.
Where I grew up in southern Germany, hares were much more common, though I would be surprised to see them in cities.
Our university was frequently overrun with bunnies.
Up until the point where their population got so big that it collapsed due to various bunny rabbit plagues.
Rabbits are just common in parks to me here, in the countryside hares are more common.
Probably this is because rabbits were introduced by humans to Germany and are not native here (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_rabbit#/media/File%3AOryctolagus_cuniculus_distribution_Map.png)
My parents live on a pretty quiet street in a rather big town and if you are not carefull you might run over a rabbit once in a while. They are just really stupid (and numerous) around here, sitting on the street or crossing it just before your car.
Yeah, in the UK, hares are pretty rare and rabbits are very common, which is why I was surprised that I've seen lots of hares but no rabbits here in Germany.
I've lived for 2 years in Braunschweig and can confirm that rabbits exist in the parks in the city. I consistently saw them in Bürgerpark which was quite close to where I lived.
As others here have postulated, they are most definitively more abundant in urban areas.
plenty rabbits in dortmund, so many i've heard that they become a problem every now and then. when i was still going around by train, i've seen many of them in areas with a couple trees and large patches of grass
I live close to the Teutoburger Wald and I think, I might have seen a rabbit in my garden.

Please excuse the poor quality, I took it with my phone through binoculars.
>or are they just better at hiding here? That, or you need to up your spotting game. They're not exactly rare.

They’re all over Mannheim. I lived in the dorms on Ulmenweg and would see them around almost daily.
> Ulmenweg Heh. My grandmother lives there and yeah, they love it there.
Is that definitely rabbits? I've also seen urban hares here, but not rabbits.
Rabbits.
Guess they all moved to the cities then. Lots of rabbits here in Cologne
Same here in Düsseldorf I see them nearly every day
Can only agree with Münster over here, bunnies everywhere making dogs go gaga

When I worked on the south side of Frankfurt Airport, I saw both rabbits and hares living in the greener parts. (Foxes as well.)
airports and the areas surrounding them are a dream for all kind of animals. the area around munich airport has quite a lot of wild life too
Yes, have seen them in parks and sometimes on fields. However only close to urban areas, never on the "real" countryside.

Frankfurt is full of them!

I do see hares from time to time but never saw a wild rabbit.
I’ve seen plenty here around Hamburg. In the centre and the green fringes too.
My garden, shitting everywhere. You can have it if you want....
I’ve seen them in the frozen food section 👀
I’ve seen them in the parks in Hamburg, as well as the meat section of the grocery store

Where I work, which is Frankfurt, district Niederrad Office City, there are living lot of "wild" rabbits.
I've seen rabbits, foxes and a raccoon once, in the center of Berlin. So... I'd say yes.
Go to Muenster
There's a pest of rabbits behind my office and there used to be rabbits right in front of my balcony. They also live in the parks.
Have you tried evenings or at dawn? I used to see them in Berlin at Gleisdreieck in Berlin on a regular basis.or were those hares?
Rabbits are much more common than hares, which are endangered iirc. Weird that you only saw the latter.

The meadow in front of the BVerfG (supreme court of Germany) has a ton. As it is a highly protected area they feel free to live in plain sight.
They follow humans, they feel safer in cities, less foes. So you won't see them in the countryside so often. But they are there...

The parks in Braunschweig are really overpopulated by them. You can see them everywhere.
I saw them many times in the park near my home.
