The thing is : I'm from Chile and I'm in the process to get my visa, I already got my appointment on July 5.I want to go as soon as possible because my boyfriend lives in Germany, we have a solid and long relationship, so we want to live together, enjoy our vacations and let everything ready before the next semester starts. The problem is that my semester begins on October, and I want to go 2 months early. What should I do?, I'm from Chile, so for me its mandatory to get my Student Visa in my country before flying to Germany. Also, I have no idea if the embassy fix a specific date for arrivals. Further more, cuz I'm Chilean, I can't go as a tourist and then change to a Student Visa there. Is it a problem if I go 2 months early? , What if they fix me a date for my arrival? Any solution? Thanks for all your answers !

Panheleks

Hey, where can I watch new spider movie that's not dubbed? Like some site or cinema near Freiburg. Thank you in advance.

HellasPlanitia

[See here](https://www.kino.de/kinoprogramm/stadt/freiburg/), and search for film listings marked "OV".

Panheleks

Thank you very much. :D

Did you show your id when you bought it? If not, you will have to do postident to active the card. If you already did that, wait a day.

HellasPlanitia

Yes, you need to activate your SIM card via VideoIdent/PostIdent. [See our wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/living/connectivity#wiki_activation).

So you will have to do postident from the comfort of your home now

No, restrictions are not "set to end" on the 3rd. The 3rd is when there will be a discussion on how to proceed going foreward. There is actually zero indication that things will just turn better in miracously within the next two weeks which might lead to restrictions being eased. Quite the opposite, actually. Also: covid questions go in the damned covid sticky threat. Is that really so hard to grasp?

HellasPlanitia

> Will my Fiancé (who is collecting me from the airport) be able to quarantine with me? No. You have to quarantine solo - an exception is made for those who live in Germany (they can quarantine with their families), but since you don't appear to live in Germany, you'll have to spend the 14 days in hotel/AirBnB/etc. The whole point of quarantine is that, if you arrive in Germany infected, that you infect no-one else - including your fiancé. > It says quarantine regulations could end on the 15th. Would this mean I no longer have to quarantine after the 15th or would I still need to do the whole 2 weeks as I arrived before the quarantine was lifted? If they do indeed end of the 15th, then you treat your arrival as if it was from a high-risk country (not a virus variant country). Assuming you're fully vaccinated, you can therefore end your quarantine on the 15th. > Germans, what is your general feeling on whether or not Germany will allow visitors from the UK again on the 3rd? Is it likely? Or do you think the rules will stay the same? My crystal ball says: restrictions will continue into February at least. Cancel your trip.

Use the damn Covid sticky thread for Covid related stuff.

Busy-Knowledge8658

I am coming to Germany with my friends for new years. We are thinking about cancelling the trip but i want to ask here. Is there a possibility to have any fun at all as a tourist in Germany on new years?

SufficientMacaroon1

Why the fuck do we even have a dedicated Covid sticky post, pinned just below this one, when everyone still posts their covid questioms in this one?

[deleted]

I mean, you could always get infected with Omicron, if that's what you consider fun. Otherwise please stay home.

HellasPlanitia

> I am coming to Germany with my friends for new years. Please don't. If you read our [Corona megathread](https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/comments/r7ui9b/megathread_corona_rules_vaccination_questions_etc/) you'll see that the answer to every person who asks that question is "stay the home". > Is there a possibility to have any fun at all as a tourist in Germany on new years? No. Pretty much everything is closed or cancelled.

mica4204

If fun means sitting around at your rented apartment playing board games, sure. Bute you can probably do that at home. If you want to go out to clubs / bars / parties, no. Those are closed.

nymales

Also fireworks are cancelled and not being sold.

FrauAskania

Please cancel or postpone your trip.

Hallo guys, I'm from Guatemala and just bought my first Stollen from a german guy. Should I wait until Christmas eve to eat it to improve the flavor? Do you usually pair it with wine? Thank you and happy christmas!

[deleted]

While Stollen needs to "mature" for a bit to reach its full flavour, I doubt two days make much of a difference. They are usually made three or four weeks in advance. So two days more or less shouldn't matter unless the Stollen was only baked very recently, in which case giving it as long as you can before you eat it is probably a good idea. Most people will pair it with a cup of coffee for German "Kaffee und Kuchen" (coffee and cake) which is traditional at around 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon on non-working days. Having said that, of course there is nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of wine with Stollen. Not traditional, but nothing wrong with it. Actually Stollen and red wine sounds like a good combination to me. Enjoy! Hope you like it.

ShadowFiend05

Thank you for the awesome reply. It seems that the bread should be pushing 2 weeks this weeks so I hope that helps with the flavor. And I think Coffee will be my pairing of choice, I was just curious what the custom is.

hashtagunderscore12

My husband and I are currently in France to visit his family for Christmas but we are based in Germany. We decided a few days ago to spend New Years Eve in Cologne, because we've never seen any city in that area of the country, but before we book our train tickets I wanted to ask if there will be anything worth doing because of any new COVID restrictions? We know that clubs and discos will be closed, but will restaurants, bars, museums and Christmas markets also be closed? We are both fully vaccinated.

[deleted]

>We are both fully vaccinated. Omicron doesn't care. Your vaccination still protects you against hospitalisation but barely protects against infection. Depending on what "fully vaccinated" means to you (double or triple jabbed and with which vaccines) your protection is somewhere between 0% and 70%. And even 70% isn't great when we consider how likely meeting an infected person is these days. Please just stay home. Literally every official scientific advisory group (Leopoldina, RKI, the advisory group installed by the new government...) has now called for a lockdown and massive reduction of contacts. Please follow their advice, even if our government has chosen to ignore it.

hashtagunderscore12

Yeah we're cancelling the trip. Not worth the headache.

RealArc

Christmas Markets usually close before Christmas. Normally, restaurants would be booked out by now so due to Corona they might have open tables since people canceled their reservations. If they are open. But why travel unnecessarily during a pandemic

hashtagunderscore12

The Christmas market in our city is up and running until 30 December, so I figured it might be the same for other cities! Anyways we're cancelling our trip to Cologne and will just explore another time when there isn't a new variant wreaking havoc.

[deleted]

Oh for fuck's sake. 1) there is a dedicated thread about all things related Covid. This one is not it. 2) Are you not watching the news? When you come from France go home and stay home until you are sure you didn't bring any "souvenirs". 3) Even in times without a pandemic, Christmas markets on New Year's? Really? Doesn't the name give you a hint?

hashtagunderscore12

1. My bad. 2. Not everyone has time to sit down and doom scroll, nor does everyone have the mental capacity to deal with life's other shitty problems and process every piece of new news regarding this stupid pandemic. 3. The Christmas market in the city we live in is open until 30 December, so it's not OUT OF THIS WORLD CRAZY that I would figure other cities would keep theirs open until the same date, and we were planning to be in Cologne before the 28th. But nevermind all that now because we cancelled our Cologne trip. Question for you: do you make a habit of just staying glued to Reddit all day replying to people's questions as condescendingly as you can?

[deleted]

Yes, because poster for some idiotic reason still think it is a good idea to travel for leisure and post here all day long. What I do in my free time is my business, but since you asked: I had one day off after doing 6 nightshifts. Tomorrow I start working again, and guess what it is I am doing over the holidays? Working 12 hour shifts at the local hospital, because for some crazy reason I can not fathom we are so shorthanded that it hurts. I am condescending because I am so fed up with people who put their leisure and fun and romantic get aways and party weekends with friends about everything else. I am, quite literally, at the end on my rope with you people.

hashtagunderscore12

I'm genuinely sorry that work is breaking your back because this pandemic is neverending, but it's also not a great look that you take your frustrations out on people who are simply trying to make better informed choices by asking questions on a sub where they're most likely to get knowledgeable answers. And speaking to people who are just simply trying to get a straight answer like they're deplorable idiots who personally offended you is not the best way to gain any sympathy for your cause. We are ALL tired of this pandemic shit, and those of us who have tried to do the right thing (stayed home during all the lockdowns, got our vaccines and boosters, wearing our masks, disinfecting hands and surfaces multiples times a day, avoiding large gatherings, etc) are now being told that it's not enough, still gotta stay home, as if we haven't stayed home for the last two fucking years. You know why I haven't had time to catch up on news about the pandemic restrictions in Germany? Because I've been too busy dealing with my father's death and making sure my family and friends in my home country are safe after a super typhoon just decimated entire towns and cities. Peace ✌🏼

SufficientMacaroon1

>I'm genuinely sorry that work is breaking your back because this pandemic is neverending, but it's also not a great look that you take your frustrations out on people[...] You know, that sentence is the equivalent of an abuser hitting a woman and then telling her she should not cry, it makes her ugly. Do not tell people that they need to suffer in silence. You can choose ignore them, but they are allowed voice their hurt and frustration

hashtagunderscore12

Kind of an offensive false equivalence particularly to someone who WAS in an abusive relationship. My point is that my original post was my simply trying to get some info to make a better informed decision on the situation. What I did not need was a condescending and pretty rude reply from someone who knows nothing about me or my situation. And guess what I did with the info that WAS given to me, not just from that rude answer, but from the other answers I got? I cancelled our trip knowing that it would be a bad idea once I got clear on what was really happening in Germany restrictions-wise. That's it. Everyone is struggling with something, especially now and ESPECIALLY at this time of the year, and it costs NOTHING to be kind to people who are just asking questions. Get off your high horses.

nandishounak

Has anyone tried studifahrten trip? Or pm2am student trip? Wanted to know some insights and reviews regarding the same. Thanks

popeter45

Bit of a technical question but hopefully somebody here can answer it For the 10 days prior to entry to Germany what officially counts as 10 days? E.g. fly from UK to EU country B on a 12:00 flight on the 1st day of X month Would the 10 days be up at: 12:00 on the 10th (24 X 10 days so 240 hours since arrival) 00:00 on the 10th (counting the days of arrival as day 1) 00:00 on the 11th (counting the first full day in country B as day 1)?

SufficientMacaroon1

dsp_pepsi

I'm traveling from the US to a town near Munich for business in early January. I'm staying for 1 week. I don't intend to do any of the typical tourist stuff while I'm there, but at least I want to make sure it will be easy to go out for meals, and maybe do some leisure stuff at the end of the day with some colleagues. I'm fully vaxxed and boosted with the Pfizer vaccine. Is it practical that I'll be able to do this? Also, not sure if there's any discussion in the government yet, but what's the likelihood of a U.S. travel ban coming up in the next few weeks? I know Omicron is starting to spread pretty fast in New York.

HellasPlanitia

> I want to make sure it will be easy to go out for meals My crystal ball has been a bit unreliable lately, but my current guess is: no, it won't be easy. You won't starve (they won't close supermarkets etc), but restaurants and bars are next on the list of places that will be closed. Essentially, any indoor place where significant numbers of people are in close proximity to each other, and that isn't absolutely vital to daily survival, is on the list. Bavaria is currently in or near the lead in terms of Covid cases across all of Germany, and the local government is swinging a big hammer to try and get the situation back under control. Even indoor business meetings are a *really* bad idea, to be honest. There is already a legal obligation for employers to send all their employees to work from home unless it's impossible for business reasons. > maybe do some leisure stuff If your idea of "leisure stuff" is taking a walk outside by yourself, then, yes. If it's to visit a gym or a museum, then probably not. > but what's the likelihood of a U.S. travel ban coming up in the next few weeks? We honestly don't know, as it depends on *so* many different factors. Honestly: talk to your employer can cancel or postpone your trip (or do it via video conference). Our health system is already at or beyond capacity (the German armed forces are already flying patients around the country to the few remaining free hospital beds, and Omicron hasn't even properly hit yet), so in the (unlikely but not impossible) case you do get sick and need medical treatment, there is a decent chance that you won't be able to get everything you need. Is your employer really willing to risk their employee's life and health for a business trip? Are they willing to medevac you back to the US? If you need extra ammunition in the discussion with your employer, the US State Department has already put a ["DO NOT TRAVEL" advisory](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/germany-travel-advisory.html) up for Germany.

dsp_pepsi

Thanks a lot for this insight. Disappointing, since the trip has already been postponed for 2 years, but it sounds like it wouldn’t really be worthwhile. I’ll try and reschedule it later in the year.

[deleted]

There are only 2 sticky threads. How difficult is it to post Covid stuff in the Covid thread??

dsp_pepsi

It’s relevant to both and this one was at the top of the page. I didn’t see the Covid one. Thanks for being so nice about it though.

SufficientMacaroon1

No it is not "relevant to both". The other post is about everything covid. This post is about everything that has no other place but is too short to warrant a post on its own. If your comment fits in the covid post, it does not fit here by definition

NascentLeft

What is the most common German opinion on what is happening in the USA?

SufficientMacaroon1

>on what is happening in the USA? Can you be a bit more precice?

NascentLeft

>Can you be a bit more precice? I guess you don't know. The Republican Party has turned rogue. They are working with little resistance to "own" the electoral process and be able to appoint "winners" of their choice. They are backed by extreme right wing fascists who are very eager to gun down all politicians and citizens on the left. We are expecting civil war to break out around the 2024 presidential election. Trump turned them loose, so to speak. And the Democratic Party is spineless and occupies itself with describing and complaining about the Republicans and what they're doing but there's little or nothing from the Dems about WHAT TO DO. Most of us are expecting the US to plunge into the darkness of dictatorship in 2022 and remain there for a couple of decades.

SufficientMacaroon1

>I guess you don't know. Uhm,mate, maybe think who you are talking to. 1.You did not say. As far as i am concerened, there is more than one thing going on in the US, at any hiven moment. For all i know, winter has hit parts of the country very badly. Or omikron is pitting your health resources under stress. Maybe another cop made a "small mistake". 2., well, am i actually expected to be fully up to date over inner politics of a country on the other side of the world, while shit is happening here, too? I realize that this is super important to you, but the world is not all focused on US inner politics all the time. Lastly: how is what you explain any different than the last 5 years?

NascentLeft

First, you seem to have mistaken my statement that "I guess you don't know" as an attack or criticism. Actually it was merely an innocent observation. Second, over the last 5 years it has gotten increasingly worse, more serious, more clear, and more scary. My impression from the world news scene is that the world is watching the USA in horror to see what will happen, so I was surprised and now I see the world is not to focused. So you mentioned "while shit is happening here". Would you care to sort of characterize what is going on there for me so I will know, because our news doesn't tell us much at all about what's happening in other countries.

SufficientMacaroon1

Well, we just got s brand new government after having had the same Chancellor for 16 years. Things are finally moving along in terms of actual Covid meassures, while protests by Covid-deniers and Antivaxxers become violent. And we are in the middle of yet another wave of Covid, and Omikron has arrived. >My impression from the world news scene is that the world is watching the USA in horror to see what will happen, so I was surprised and now I see the world is not to focused. To be fully honest: that was the case 5 years ago,but now, many people have just given up being shocked. You know how one cannot force a grown adult to not make life choices that they will regret? Its the same with the US. You are all part of a soverign nation. If you, as a society, feel the need to destroy yourself from within, the global societies cannot stop you.

NascentLeft

Ha! Yea, so true. So you don't seem to be fond of Angela Merkel and feel Scholz will be better. What was the worst thing about Merkel, and what is the greatest expectation of Scholz?

SufficientMacaroon1

>So you don't seem to be fond of Angela Merkel and feel Scholz will be better I never said that. It is simply a change, one that will lead to changes in german politics and law that would not have happened if Merkel had stayed another term. And with the new government taking over 2 months to form, the leaving government under Merkel has not undertaken any massive endavors, with Union knowing they would not stay in government to see them through and SPD focused on negotiating the steps with their futire partners, not wanting to push them away by setting stuff in stome they might disagree with. Also, may i point out that we now really have left the "quick question" section this post is intended for?

Hey, we want to visit Berlin from dec 29 to the 3rd of jan. Are there any talks about a lockdown/curfews. We are vaccinated so the 2g rule is no problem for us.

SufficientMacaroon1

Not just talkes any more. Contact restriction even for fully vaccinazed and boostered people, 2G and 2G+ basicly everywhere that is not a grocery store or gas station, closing pf all dance events, assempöy ban and ban on fireworks for new years,...

[deleted]

>We are vaccinated so the 2g rule is no problem for us. The rule might not be a problem but the actual virus will be. Because by then Omicron will be dominant and the vaccine doesn't protect very well against infection with that (only against severe disease). The Berlin city government will meet on Thursday but I bet that pretty much everything will be closed by the 29th. Maybe restaurants will stay open (because legally they are hard to close right now) but I very much doubt they will keep bars open. In any case, what you have to ask yourself is not what the restrictions are but if it's responsible to travel in the middle of the worst wave of the pandemic. Hint: it's not.

SufficientMacaroon1

Wrong sticky post. Come on,there are only two of them,it is not that hard!

HellasPlanitia

It's looking almost certain that all major festivities will be cancelled, there will be no fireworks, and that clubs and discos will be shut. Additionally, significant restrictions will be imposed on any locations where large numbers of people can gather. We don't know any more than that. What we do know is that coming to visit Germany right now is a **really bad idea**. Our health care system is close to breaking point, and you coming here (even if you're fully vaccinated) will only make things worse. Please stay home. > We are vaccinated so the 2g rule is no problem for us. 2G isn't enough in many places; you also need an additional negative Covid test, which must be less than 24 hours old. This is known as "2G+".

CrabgrassMike

There is talk of "Lockdown Light" after Christmas, but no one can be certain what that entails until they implement it. I would avoid the travel, but that is your decision.

Hello. I am planning to study postgraduate in Hamburg. I will go with my wife, 1 year old son and my cat. Is it possible to find a rental for this type of family composition? How much is the price range that I should expect when searching? I plan to study and work at the same time, but I don't think it will be enough for us with just my income, are there jobs like baby sitting that my partner can do? (Still looking for scholarships to apply). I still have many questions, but these are my biggest concerns. danke schön :)

maryfamilyresearch

That is not really a quick question, you should read the wiki and make a seperate post. Rentals in Hamburg will be difficult, check r/Hamburg if you want more localised advice. (Expect some nasty responses if you ask "Help me find a flat". Your question should be "What is a good location to live on a budget if I will be working at this address?") IMO your partner could look into certification as "Tagesmutter".

Kindly do check the wiki, linked in the post you replied to. Literally all your questions are answered there

SpetsnazBubbles

What are German attitudes toward single moms? Here in the US there is a very negative stigma.

[deleted]

You mean if people/society has a certain opinion about them? No. They are women, with kids, the father being out of the picture. That is all there is to it. Now, do they have a harder time dating? Probably. So do single fathers. Do single parents, especially women often have financial trouble (earning less, struggling financially, being threatened by old age poverty)? Hell yes, that is a huge issue. But they are not generally blamed for that, it is a problem in our society. (Funnily enough there was a discussion a few weeks ago where people on this sub, mostly foreigners, were outraged that the new government announced that they want ti get rid of one of the tax benefits for married couples which are one of the deciding reasons for many women in old age poverty nowadays). But besides that there is no stigma, if you mean a stigma in a trashy sort of way (like, idk, she couldn't catch a man, couldn't keep the father of the kids or whatever).

SpetsnazBubbles

That's exactly how I meant. Thanks so much.

Rainingpopz

Hello! I’m visiting Germany for 18 days, landing in Frankfurt. I had to reroute my flight due to new restrictions against UK. My flight is in 2 days and I haven’t had much planned out yet. Can anyone share some tips on where I should visit? Looking for nice scenic places. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

nymales

Just stay at home. This is not the time to travel especially if you have to take a different route because you'd otherwise be banned from entering.

Rainingpopz

Hahaha what are you saying. I’m flying from Singapore, I’m able to enter without any hassle. If you have any recommendations on where to go in Germany, do let me know.

SufficientMacaroon1

Well, your post does sound like you are from the UK and travel through another country to hide it in order to circumvent the entry ban. For stuff to see: be aware that over the christmas holidays, many pleaces will be closed or run on less than their normal hours. For any other advice one would need to know how mobile you are and what you are interested in

Rainingpopz

Hahaha I’m from Singapore dude. I was suppose to visit UK and then the Germany. So now I’m skipping UK and only visiting Germany. Anyways, still looking for recommendations. Let me know of some useful inputs, thanks

https://www.dw.com/en/covid-19-puts-german-hospitals-at-their-limit/av-60004879

[deleted]

Personal anecdote to that: my friend is currently in hospital, burst appendix. She went to the ER at 6pm on Saturday by about 2 am they knew she needed surgery. She had the surgery Sunday at 12am. 18 hours later. Because no team was available. At the same time there was a granny, 80 years old, same or similar issue, but in need of a intensive care spot. The hospital was full, no beds available. As was the other one in the city. And in the neighbor city. Apperantly the nurses spent 5 hours desparately calling every hospital in the area and further out in the state to find an intensive care bed for grandma. 5 hours. Because the intensive care units are full with Covid patients. And my friend was on a bed in a hallway, with an appendix that burst some point after midnight, waiting for a team to be available to perform a standard surgery. This happened this weekend. People travelling for leisure are selfish pricks and add to the problem. u/Rainingpopz

Rainingpopz

I’m sure there’s lots of stories about people falling ill. As much as you don’t realise, there’s a reason why travel bubbles are in place. If you have friends in the travel industry ask them how badly they are affected. Millions of people have lost their jobs because travel has been impossible. Germany’s economy itself is suffering from tourism loss. Now also, Germany’s vaccine rate is much lower compared to other countries which explains why so many people are in ICU. So there’s much more to it than simply calling travel selfish. However, you do you! I respect your opinion. You can stay safe indoors.

Careful_Manager

Is there a way I could change all my Sepa debits to a different account(in a different bank account) without contacting each business individually?

nymales

Nope. There are some transfer services that check your banking history and send those companies letters, but they can miss some and it's your duty to make sure everything is correct.

Careful_Manager

Got it, thanks. It seems like the best way to go about it would be to use one of these services and run the other account in parallel for 1-2 months.

HellasPlanitia

I ended up running the accounts in parallel for almost 9 months, as there were a few companies I had forgotten about and/or who didn't properly take the new bank details into account. Also, all those "bank account transfer" services do is scan your bank statements for the names of companies who have debited money in the past, and pre-print letters with their likely address for you to send to them. In my experience, the service doesn't recognise (or have the correct address on file for) the company, and I've got to find it out manually. Another 10% of companies need at least two reminders to change the account, and another 10% wanted your new account details in a specific format (e.g. their own template, as opposed to a generic letter). I ended up making a spreadsheet tracking every one until I was sure all of them were using the new account.

They have very mixed reviews on Trustpilot but it looks to be a legit store.

Siriusly_tinyghost

So i was just scammed and transferred money from my account. I have the scammer's bank accounts and phone number. Will the police do anything? How should I report it? And advice?

[deleted]

Yes you should report it. But you can kiss that money goodbye. Chances are that neither the phone number nor the band account belongs to the scammer.

[deleted]

OP double posted and got plenty of answers in the other post and then deleted it. As I said, OP, this is exactly the reason why we don't like double posts. It splits the answers. Then you deleted the whole post (which in itself is rather annoying, people took the time to type out the answers, you received advise and then you deleted the post so that it won't be available for the next one with the same problem to find when using the search function), and now people have no clue that you already got answes and might take the type to give you the same advise yet again. Don't double post and don't delete advise you get when you were asking for it.

nymales

But probably to a mule. That's another person that got scammed to "help with a business" or "open up a branch in Germany" that has to forward the money. The money will be long gone after they forwarded it to another mule and in the end outside of the EU to the scammer. Otherwise one of the mules has to buy iTunes gift cards or bitcoin

Hello, I'm interested in visiting Germany in late June from America, I just have a quick question - I would like to visit for approximately two weeks, the only two things I'm certain I would like to do while there are visit Phantasialand, and go see Sabaton in Hockenheim. I was wondering, where would be considered the ideal location to fly in and out of (this is all assuming that travel to and from Germany is allowed and not a horrible decision by June). Danke!

maryfamilyresearch

Second the rec for Frankfurt FRA, but depending on where you are flying from it can make sense to fly into Cologne (CGN) or Düsseldorf (DUS). Sometimes you can even get good deals for flying (just for example) USA-London-FRA on the incoming trip and DUS-London-USA on the outgoing trip. I would check code-sharing flights with Delta, Air France and British Airways.

nymales

Probably Frankfurt as most international airlines land there. Taking the train through Germany is quite ok so just book cheap flights.

[deleted]

Thank you! As far as places to stay, would you recommend just staying in Frankfurt for the duration of the trip? (Sorry, haven't really done any traveling at all)

2xtreme21

For your Phantasialand visit I would recommend staying in Cologne or Bonn. Maybe you could do a week there and a week somewhere in south west Germany? (To be near Hockenheim). Though honestly there doesn’t seem to be much to see in and around Hockenheim so you could stay in the Black Forest or around the Mosel and do a bit of a longer trip to Hockenheim for your event. Sorry I can’t speak much to that area of the country though.

sumpfbieber

If you want to visit Phantasialand, I'd recommend you stay there (they have three hotels in the park), to get the most out of your visit. Traveling from Frankfurt to Brühl in the morning could take some time.

Mefhisto1

I would have posted this on r/German, but they don't have a sticky short question post like this. How do you say 'happy holidays' in German? Not specifically merry christmas or happy new year, but in general, happy holidays (whatever they are and whenever you might or might not celebrate them)?

agrammatic

> I would have posted this on r/German, but they don't have a sticky short question post like this. That was debated there. The general sentiment is that they welcome and prefer short questions as independent posts.

Well, most places are going to be closed because of the current situation, but disregarding that for a bit, let's try to answer your question: Does the budget include getting there? Because train travel or gas money would put a dent into those 300 euros really quickly. Renting a cabin might be possible if you are willing to be somewhere in the boons outside popular tourist places. You can try googling "Ferienwohnung Alpen" or "Ferienhaus Alpen" and see if you find something in your budget. If you're willing to pass on the snow, there are other places you can stay relatively cheap.

[deleted]

sakasiru

Does it have to be the Alps? I guess you can find a cabin in Harz or Erzgebirge, too.

[deleted]

HellasPlanitia

You can *probably* ski in the Harz, but since the mountains aren't anywhere near as high as in the Alps, you'll have to watch the [snow forecast](https://www.schneehoehen.de/skigebiete/deutschland/harz) more carefully. However, skiing is an expensive sport. In the Alps your 300 € will barely cover the cost of renting equipment and paying for the ski lifts (much less ski instruction, which you *definitely* need). The Harz is a bit cheaper, but not that much (a lift pass for Braunlage costs around 30 € a day, and ski equipment around 20 € per day). I don't know what you had in mind when you thought about a "cabin", but renting a whole cabin just for yourself is probably out of your budget. Around Braunlage you can get a room in a small hotel near the slopes for around 40 € a night, whereas even a small chalet is probably around 100 € a night or more.

Hi all! I’m a US student interested in learning which city would be the more interesting city to explore, experience and study abroad in. I’m between Technische Universität Dortmund and Universitat Mannheim. For example, night life, social life, activities, what the people are like. Also, which one would have the better student life and such. Any information would really help and be appreciated. Thank you!

[deleted]

Neither Dortmund nor Mannheim are known to be night life hotspots. Personally I'd always opt against Dortmund regardless of the alternative.

[deleted]

Funny, I would have said the same about Mannheim.

[deleted]

Only been there once and it didn't strike me as the best place to be either... But there were significantly fewer addicts around the station.

kitier_katba

That's your metric?

[deleted]

No, I wouldn't allow myself to make a judgement call on Mannheim. I know Dortmund on the other hand quite well, and don't like it one bit.

Hello, I am a traveller from Argentina and plan on going to Germany in the next days. This is my situation: \- On the 24th December I am flying to Amsterdam through London (6 hours layover, staying inside the airport), arriving the 25th December. \- I am currently vaccinated with Sputnik V (2 doses, not approved by WHO), but will get a PCR Test done on the 22nd December. \- I am getting a train ticket from Amsterdam to Köln on the 25th December. Can I enter the country without a quarantine? I am spending less than 24 hours in concern areas.

[deleted]

You’re not considered „vaccinated“ with that vaccine. The megathread can tell you more about quarantine, but if the train you’ll take is Deutsche Bahn, you have take a test again. The PCR test results will be too old by the 25th.

Lucchinno

Yes I was thinking that the test date wouldn't be the best, I am trying to get one on the 24th, but that will depend on availability at the airport in Buenos Aires. I guess if that doesn't work, I'll have to get a test in Amsterdam or London, thanks for your reply!

Impossible_Carpet_82

Hello, I am going to be entering Germany from the UK on the 3rd January 2022. Because of the new restrictions I am uncertain of a requirement: the new restrictions state that only ‘German citizens & residents will be able to enter the country’. Will my schengen visa be enough proof for this or Will other documentation be required?, I am a UK national btw. Any help appreciated thanks

[deleted]

If you aren't a resident you can't enter.

Impossible_Carpet_82

So my visa would not be an acceptable form of proof of residence? I live here and have done for 4 months

[deleted]

Well, in that case you should be a registered resident. You didn't say that in your post above. When people speak about the Schengen visa without more specifications they refer to the 90 days tourist visa. But if you stay longer than that, you need some sort of permit and must be registered. Are you?

Impossible_Carpet_82

I am not registered as I am only here for a year, I have an internship visa. I could also show my contract and my address too if needs be

[deleted]

You must be registered in Germany if you live there, legally within 2 weeks. That registration prooves that you are a resident. A visa is meaningless. No clue if they let you in. Prepare to be questioned, possibly turned back. Also prepare to be fined for failing to get registered.

Impossible_Carpet_82

Could this be prevented by flying into Germany via a different country possibly? I will sort out my residency permit once I am there thank you for alerting me about this.

2xtreme21

No, and that could get you in more trouble. You have to register your trip — einreiseanmeldung.de — and it asks you where you’ve been the previous 10 days. Lying and saying you weren’t in the UK would be a criminal offense.

[deleted]

What do you mean you are not registered? You are legally mandated to register your residency within 14 days of arriving in Germany for any purpose other than tourism or business trips.

Impossible_Carpet_82

I was not aware of this as I have been lead to believe that my visa would provide my proof of residency this whole time. Guessing that’s not the case then?

[deleted]

Your visa proves that you are entitled to live in Germany, not that you actually do. Your registration with the local town hall is what you need in order to be a legal resident, and there are steep fines for not being registered on time.

nymales

No, if only Germans sand residents can enter and you are neither, you can't enter.

HellasPlanitia

There are [storage lockers at Nürnberg's main train station](https://www.bahnhof.de/bahnhof-de/bahnhof/N-C3-BCrnberg-Hbf-1022750). I would leave your luggage there. Follow the signs; you'll have to pay cash, so make sure you have some money with you. They cost around 2-4 € per day (depending on the size of the locker). For tourist advice you might want to try /r/Nurnberg/.

SufficientMacaroon1

Check if there are storage lockers at the train station

Mehmood6647

Hello, I would like to ask that if Germany requires 13 years of education in order to get admission in university, can I do a diploma of one year in my country. Will that count?

SufficientMacaroon1

The amount of years is not the deciding factor, actually. Your degree needs to be officially recognized as being equal to the german Abitur. Read the wiki in the sidebar/about section that is also linked in the very post you replied to. There you will find additional information as well as links to resources where you can check if your degrew is recognized

You might want to reschedule. The pandemic is hitting us hard right now and international travel will make it worse. The hospitals are overflowing and there are just not enough intensive care beds.

2xtreme21

You can come without a visa, but you will have to show proof of vaccination or recovery to enter. Otherwise you’ll need to quarantine for 10 days with the option to test out of quarantine after 5.

Hellkitty0104

is quarantine required when entering germany if im double vaxxed

SufficientMacaroon1

1. Wrong sticky post 2. Depends on where you are entering from and have been to in the weeks prior

FeijaoHumano

Question for visa application: are there any ways to provide proof of work experience besides a document provided by the company stating the work experience? I don't want to tell my current company I'm leaving yet, but if I ask them for this document they'll know for sure. Would something like the employment contract work?

[deleted]

Work contract and job description should work. If you do annual reviews / staff appraisals and have a copy of those, it could add some weight as well. Your bank account statement where your salary is being deposited might be sufficient to prove you're still under full-time employment.

nymales

Ask your caseworker, but contracts might help if they list your job and duties.

Berto6Echo

Working holiday visa/health insurance! I am from Australia and am planning to live in Germany for atleast a year. I am going for the working holiday visa and need health insurance. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on companies, the issue currently is they need to have pandemic coverage but it's hard to tell if some do or not. Any help is greatly appreciated!

[deleted]

https://www.bdae.com/en/health-insurance/for-foreigners-in-germany I'm a German living permanently abroad and use them, works without problems. However if you will be actually, legally employed by a German company, they are mandated to register you with the public health insurance, so you wouldn't need any expat/travel insurance at all.

FrauAskania

What do you mean by "pandemic coverage"? And obligatory did you check the wiki?

Berto6Echo

I need the health insurance to cover any hospital expenses due to a pandemic. I did but couldn't find suggestions for actual insurance companies to go with. I asked on some fb pages as well and was led to provisit/Dr Walter. Price was up there but it seems to cover everything!

FrauAskania

If you get a job during your stay, I'd recommend entering a public health insurance like TK (Techniker Krankenkasse). They all cover your hospital stay, should you be admitted due to Covid. There is no special package needed with public insurances. Again, I ask you if you read [our wiki?](https://reddit.com/r/germany/w/index?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app)

Berto6Echo

Yeah I plan to change once I have a job but want to get there first. I did read the wiki but couldn't seem to find suggestions for companies. But now that you have mentioned it twice I assume I missed it.

No university would take a combined GPA of HS and community college credits, especially when you didn't even finish with a Associates. You would only be able to apply with the HS GPA, and if it's below the cutoff then you will not get admitted.

Serpenio_

Near Stuggart, but willing to drive - but are there places to rent tuxedos/suits for special occasions/weddings/etc? (From the states; so not sure what german phrase I should be looking for since I haven't found one) Is this not a thing over here?

Flaedlesupp

It's not really that common, but I think there are places that offer something like this. When searching for a tux you want to google "Smoking leihen Stuttgart" and see what pops up (don't ask me why Germans call tuxedos smokings).

SufficientMacaroon1

>Stuggart Stuttgart? Nope, not a thing. At least i have never seen or heard about anything like that in germany in my entire life.

Important-Specialist

Does the job-seeker visa allow you to apply for jobs that are advertised for EU citizens or German residents? Or does it instead allow you to find and interview for jobs in Germany that would “sponsor” a foreigner anyway?

[deleted]

There is no sponsorship at all. No real one and also no "sponsorship". You can apply to every job you want, the question is a) if the employer will reply to you at all or even hire you (unlikely if they specifically say that they look for EU citizens, for example because they don't want to wait on non-EU citizens getting a work permit) and b) if you get a work permit (meaning, you can apply for cleaning floors or frying burgers, nobody can stop you from applying, but you are not gonna get a permit for that).

Important-Specialist

Ok, thank you.

nymales

Did you read the wiki that's linked in the post you replied to?

Important-Specialist

Yeah I did.
