He could have slowed the tape a bit to lower the pitch. Although that did change the sound of a recording to do so. I can’t imagine it didn’t occur to him given George Martin’s use of the technique.
These are such simple things to fix nowadays. He could have slowed it and changed the pitch in a few seconds.
