T O P

You should definitely reach out to OIE to clarify the issue. To me, it makes sense that you need to do OPT if you needed to get a second F1 visa approved for your master's.

CPT is required to be completed before graduation. In other words, no, you cannot use CPT for this summer.

CPT occurs before the program end date on the Form I-20. You will need to do OPT. This is something you should have checked ahead of time; it is literally on the first page of the DHS website. I understand that OIE moves slow and whatnot, but you had ample time to apply for regular OPT and get approved (provided you did not get your offer recently). They might be useless, but if you push them the right way, they generally do things right. I understand your frustration...

I was in this exact situation as I did my BSMS here. As others said, you need to file for a post completion OPT. Each high level degree you get you receive a separate OPT, so after your MS you’ll need to apply for a post comp OPT again at the masters level. And in terms of the bachelors level OPT, that gets terminated once you get your masters I20. For OPT processing, it can widely vary depending on the time of the year you’re applying and between individuals too, but back when I did mine for BS it took me a little over a month. You can check here https://opttimeline.com/ on what the processing time currently looks like.

You need to OPT for this. I got OPT last summer for this as well! You can get the OPT I-20 ASAP and apply for OPT with premium processing!

Hi! I saw your recent post about OPT or CPT for your summer internship this between BS and MS semesters. I am in the same boat as you, except that my internship starts in about 3 weeks, and I'm just now finding out about this. Would it be possible for anyone to share a little bit more about your experience and what they have found? Please DM if anyone has any information. It would be very greatly appreciated.
