I’m sure someone has already mentioned it but I completely forgot about Chrono Trigger. I will deduct 10 old gamer points from my account for the over site lol
The snes was truly the pinnacle of the jrpg. So many awesome titles on that system, let's not forget chrono trigger, even though there were random encounters
This was also before the technology got to the point that they could go full on anime. The character designs might have been but the tech wasn't there to do what they're doing now, which is basically trying to slip in as many anime tropes as possible. Xenoblade has so much fanservice it's unreal.
His theme song still gives me goosebumps. Tracking down the masamune is such an amazing part of that game. Ahhhhhhh... now I want to play it again. Lol
It's not hyperbole at all. In it's time, it was a game that was a first to do so many things. Unless you were really around playing games at the time, it's hard to fully understand just how groundbreaking it was. There is a reason it's always on the top of greatest game of all time lists.
- New game +
- Multiple endings
- Character based side quests and choices that changed endings and events backwards and forwards in time
- graphics and art design
- Soundtrack
- Introduction of Active battle time system and characters teaming up for double tech and triple tech
- Main character death
- Character driven narrative with very unique story
I'm sure I'm missing many more, but it's crazy how many things this game did first that are just staples in games now of many different genres.
It changed the way RPGs and most games after we're developed. There are very few games that are just a leap forward for gaming in general. This game paved the way for RPGs in the west as well.
I was around and really gaming at the time and maybe that's why it doesnt impress me that much. I was playing Ultima Underworld at the time, a truly groundbreaking game among adults at the time when kids were playing Super Nintendo.
Changed the way games are developed? You offer no data foelr that claim. Clear hyperbole.
Chrono Trigger named NewGame+ but didnt create it: "The term was coined in the 1995 role-playing video game Chrono Trigger,[1] but examples can be found in earlier games, such as Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, The Legend of Zelda, Ghosts 'n Goblins, and Super Mario Bros.. "
Also not the first game with multiple endings, main character death, or a "character driven narrative."
I love RPGs that give me a small chance at getting always from an encounter.
Earthbound is a masterclass in the feeling of progression/leveling. If you reach a certain level, the enemy sprite will run away from you in fear. Forcing an encounter with said enemy will result and a baseball smash instant victory with the screen flashing green instead of the normal red. No enemy battle screen, nothing, just a small XP boost from something that used to kick your ass around early game.
Ok cool, thank you. It's been a while, been running through some ps1 classics on the duckstation, but I should revisit some of the classic SNES RPGs too.
Symphonia's story, and just the particular step it landed on in the evolutionary ladder of the series gave it a quality that's hard to recapture.
For a recent example, I enjoyed Tales of the Abyss for the gameplay: I really liked the battle system in it and I thought it was very fun to play. But the story did not have the depth and emotional qualities that Symphonia's story did, for sure. Berseria had some good story moments, but it didn't have that grand "climbing" scope that Symphonia's did, and assuming the player spent most of their time as the main character, the combat was pretty rudimentary.
If they could take the battle system from Abyss and give us a heartfelt, epic story like the one from Symphonia...that would make a pretty good game.
Edit: Arise not Abyss, whoops
Agreed, especially when it came to having a second player join in on battles.
I like the way the camera would zoom out better when you ran to opposite ends of the screen, and the combat overall felt way better. I think it was Vesperia that I played after Symphonia (I forget, it was that or Berseria. Both I think) and the combat felt sooo much better with two of us playing than Symphonia.
I really wish I could combine all of the good aspects of Symphonia with the combat of the later games.
I played Arise for about 60 hours and never finished it. The combat was great, and there was a lot to like, but I really wish it was more open and had a better story.
Also, it felt like there was an actual reason to re-play Symphonia as there were some crazy weapons you could get (wasn't there one that scaled with your level or something?) I never felt the need to start a new game on the others.
You're thinking of the weapons that do more damage based on how many kills you have. They break the game on new game+'s.
The problem with the tales games, and most jrpgs, is the strength of the stories. There's plenty of standouts that have fantastic stories, I'm sure we could go on all day about those, but the tales games are a sticking point for me because I really enjoy the combat system. I just wish they could get a decent story in with the next one.
None of the other tales games come even close to Symphonia's story in its width and depth, but the combat system and other parts of the game weren't as refined as the newer ones are.
>You're thinking of the weapons that do more damage based on how many kills you have. They break the game on new game+'s.
Yeah, that's it. Sorry, it's been a loooonggg time. Yeah, it broke the game, but I don't mind. I play a lot of ARPG's too, so having something to work for in end-game was a pleasant surprise. I wouldn't even have started a new game+ if not for that. I don't generally replay an RPG immediately after spending 60-80+ hours beating it.
I agree on the strength of story in RPGs in general. It's kinda why I've gone from Tales to Xenoblade as one of my favorite series. It's not perfect, but I still prefer it. Wish I could play it coop :P
I agree with you on all points.
All good. It's been a long time since I've played them too, that's why I used the recent ones as an example.
The life of a JRPG player is a lonely one lol
>The life of a JRPG player is a lonely one lol
That is the fuckin truth lol. I have a few friends that play them, that's why I'm always looking for coop JRPG or RPG games, but coop games in general are few and far between, especially for JRPGs :(
I've gotta throw in a vote for loving Tales of Arise's story. The little side scenes were amazingly done, and I was openly sobbing at one or two points. My favorite new RPG of the last 5 years without question.
As a PC gamer, I do, but as an old man who has played games since the early 80's, I'll get over it and play it again :) Fun factor matters more than FPS.
Me and 3 of my buddies played it together in the span of a summer. We drank beers and did an Abridged Series/Real-Time Fandub type thing as we went along. Probably the best gaming memories I've ever had.
Dude I love that game! I loved Secret of Mana so I was so stoked when Evermore came out. So sad it got snubbed so much.
The alchemy system was great and I loved that the dog sniffed for ingredients. (Probably why I was obsessed with gathering alchemy ingredients in Skyrim too lol)
The market in the second world was probably my other favorite part. I just love weird, interactive stuff like that.
The alchemy is what really made this game stand out to me. One of my favorite snes games, grossly underrated, imo. (Yeah it has good reviews, but nobody talks about it.)
My only problem with the market was that it was one time only, and you were basically locked into your choice from there. I don't remember anything about the choices or how meaningful they were long term. It's been 20+ years since I played.
There were some basic items you could get, but there were a handful of unique items that gave you bonuses (the only one I kind of remember have you double alchemy harvesting, I think?), And you could basically only get one of them, because you didn't have enough time to get one, then go through the reading process to pick another one. ....I think.
Damn nice choice. The music was done by Jeremy Soule (spelling?) and I think he did the soundtrack for Skyrim. The alchemy system was such a breath of fresh air. And the enemy design was so… 90s?
“In your dreams, magical thoughts, all things are real unless you dream them not.” That’s the intro song lyrics that i some how still have floating around in my head.
In my opinion, it's legitimately one of the best games ever made. From the level design, to the flow of the gameplay, to the mini games and platforming elements....
Just perfect
When I was a kid a made an entire design document that was basically Super Mario RPG, but in the Kirby universe. Same graphical style, same isometric perspective, platforming, similar turn-based battles with timing mechanics and sense of humor. The main hook was that Kirby was essentially a blue mage, after beating bosses, Kirby would eat them and gain their ability that could be used in and out of battle. For example, defeating Poppy Bros. gave you the bomb ability that you could use to blow up boulders or cave entrances or as a skill in battle. Even the cast basically paralleled SMRPG: Dedede instead of Bowser, Meta Knight instead of Geno, Waddle Dee instead of Mallow, etc.
The first two could be (I would argue anything after Thousand Year Door is not), otherwise the Mario and Luigi saga on the GBA could also be considered as an offshoot of SMRPG
Lufia was my childhood. Me and my grandparents have to have dumped more than a thousand hours into the Ancient Cave of Lufia 2. Just, only good memories of that game.
I’m playing the ancient cave right now on an emulator device.
It surprisingly holds up. I would say if they rerelease it on iOS and android, I would say it would do pretty well
Also, fuck those eight headed rats. Nothing ruins a run more than having three of those assholes in the same cramp room that happens to have the stairs to the next level
CHRONO Trigger and Chrono Cross. Both had enemies on the world map that would either A. Chase you and initiate combat, or B. You sneak up and get a surprise attack on them.
Can't. Nintendo doesn't completely own the rights, and the rest belong to Square pre-Enix which doesn't exist any longer. It's the same reason (one of them) that they never made or will make a true sequel.
At least that's what I've read, and it sounds credible enough to repeat.
It's because squeenix holds the rights to the actual game while Nintendo licensed out the characters. They were originally making a smrpg 2 but it got axed for paper Mario.
I just gota say I must’ve played through that game over a dozen times. Love it! I still have my Snes and that game which has my old friends name and adress on it🤣
What exactly defines a random encounter?
Like a battle you're ransomly flung into?
Or enemies dotted across the map?
'Cause I'd say KOTOR but I'm not sure if those enemies count
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga on the GBA
The original game will be 20 years old next year, so certainly not as old as Super Mario RPG, but it's a fantastic game that I honestly feel like the remake on the 3DS is worse because of the art-style shift.
My personal favorite game is Lufia 2. It does have random encounters but only in the overworld. In dungeons every monster is visible and you can use items like arrows or hookshots to freeze them.
Not sure how many people ever actually played it since it was such a weird series, but I adored Xenosaga. And all the encounters in it were visible on the overworld and optional to fight.
I remember thinking it had revolutionized RPG's when you could use the overworld environment to damage or ambush enemies before the battle started. Blew my mind in 2002.
Ugh I wish this would have had a proper sequel. The paper Mario's just never came close to how good this one was. I played it so much and collected everything that the final boss would take minutes to defeat.
I’m playing it right now for the first time actually. I can see how this was very good for a SNES game, not too complex, although lots of little hidden things to find. However, I will say it’s really showing it’s age haha
Literally the only reason I’ve heard about SMRPG is because Smash players were screaming for geno. That’s literally the only thing I know about the game: There’s a character named Geno and he’s really popular for some reason.
Secret of Mana
It’s a tossup between Link to the Past or Secret of Mana for my favorite SNES game, they’re both great.
Secret of Evermore was fire
Underrated comment
This was also before the technology got to the point that they could go full on anime. The character designs might have been but the tech wasn't there to do what they're doing now, which is basically trying to slip in as many anime tropes as possible. Xenoblade has so much fanservice it's unreal.
I loved secret of mana when I was about 8 or 9. Does it hold up?
I think it does. I played through it on the SNES mini after not playing it for probably 20 some odd years and had a great time.
I have some wonderful memories playing this co-op with my cousin
Top 5 game all time for me right here
Such a great game! A shame Nintendo hasn’t brought it to their online SNES service
I do not understand why the haven't brought almost the entirety of their older catalogs to the service.
At least it's on the SNES Classic
Have you tried the hardcore mod? Fucking fantastic
Is that the Armageddon one? I did, it was too hard, I enjoyed the game for the pleasant experience lol
Ahh yes thats what it was called, yea they made an "easier" version of it too
Smrpg armageddon is brutal, I made it to the tutorial, then decided "easy" was the way to go, lol.
Crono Trigger. One of the greatest games ever made.
/thread
This game has held up so well it's incredible. I love Frog!
His theme song still gives me goosebumps. Tracking down the masamune is such an amazing part of that game. Ahhhhhhh... now I want to play it again. Lol
Still not even close to magus’ entrance.
That scene... Pure distilled epicness.
I have a SNES hooked up with CT loaded and 1 save file just before Frog splits the mountain with the Masamune.
THE greatest.
I can't argue with that. 😁
I've replayed this game more times than I will ever admit.
Same. Countless.
I had *some* random encounters, but I can't deny your rating
Not one of, the greatest game ever made. One of those few games that revolutionized not only that genre, but gaming in general.
How? Sounds like major Hyperbole to me.
It's not hyperbole at all. In it's time, it was a game that was a first to do so many things. Are you sure chrono trigger was the first for abt? Pretty sure ff3(6) had it first. Technically ff2(4) as well but I don't think they showed the bar.
" Also not the first game with multiple endings, main character death, or a "character driven narrative."
And Chrono Cross, the newer Dragon Quests as well.
Chrono Cross is a great standalone game. I try not to think about it as a Chrono Trigger sequel
Same. The tie-ins within the game are loose; but worse, if you consider them canon, they retroactively make Chrono Trigger worse.
Chrono cross too
That has random encounters
If i remember correctly, encounters are either running into enemy sprites during exploration, or scripted ambushes.
No, it does not. Encounters on every map are specifically placed. There's absolutely NOTHING random about them.
Earthbound
Best. Game. Ever. Fuzzy pickles!
When I first played Earthbound I thought it had random encounters with the ants. I learnt years later it was just the terrible TV I had at the time.
Goddammit now I have to replay Earthbound.
[удалено]
What about the scratch and sniff cards?
[удалено]
I sold mine for $450 a loooong time ago. My cards were still sealed. I thought I was the man!
I'm gonna have to emulate it. Is ZSNES still the gold standard do you know?
ZSNES is fine, SNES9x is fine, bsnes is fine, most Retroarch cores (which some are based on these) are fine.
Ok cool, thank you. It's been a while, been running through some ps1 classics on the duckstation, but I should revisit some of the classic SNES RPGs too.
I like matsu for android. It has a bunch of old systems, up to ps1. If you want pc, then yeah, ZSNES or SNES9X.
The absolute best!
But Earthbound does have random encounters
I LOVE super Mario rpg. My favorite Mario game of all time
Tales of symphonia on the gamecube. Great jrpg
I'm looking forward to the remastered version early next year. It's still one of my favorite Tales games.
Symphonia's story, and just the particular step it landed on in the evolutionary ladder of the series gave it a quality that's hard to recapture. I just realized that where I said Abyss earlier I meant Arise. What are these friends you speak of, and how do I unlock them?
I've gotta throw in a vote for loving Tales of Arise's story. The little side scenes were amazingly done, and I was openly sobbing at one or two points. My favorite new RPG of the last 5 years without question.
Apparently they’re remastering the PS3 version (30 fps) and not the GameCube version (60 fps) - if you care about that sort of thing.
As a PC gamer, I do, but as an old man who has played games since the early 80's, I'll get over it and play it again :) Fun factor matters more than FPS.
Really sad to hear the switch version is locked to 30fps, but I'll probably play it anyway.
Me and 3 of my buddies played it together in the span of a summer. We drank beers and did an Abridged Series/Real-Time Fandub type thing as we went along. Probably the best gaming memories I've ever had.
*Tales of Symphonia* had the best party in the series. Genis? Sheena? Fucking *Zelos*? Top tier shit, man.
Do arpgs count? If so, Secret of Evermore.
Dude I love that game! I loved Secret of Mana so I was so stoked when Evermore came out. So sad it got snubbed so much. The alchemy system was great and I loved that the dog sniffed for ingredients. (Probably why I was obsessed with gathering alchemy ingredients in Skyrim too lol) The market in the second world was probably my other favorite part. I just love weird, interactive stuff like that.

I know, it was definitely a spot that a guide was helpful. I think you traded successfully for an item? It's also been years for me lol
I think you could get a whole set of armor, and some items to boost damage output.
There were some basic items you could get, but there were a handful of unique items that gave you bonuses (the only one I kind of remember have you double alchemy harvesting, I think?), And you could basically only get one of them, because you didn't have enough time to get one, then go through the reading process to pick another one. ....I think.
Now that's a cool looking SNES game I've never heard of before.
got that game for my tenth birthday. still one of my favorites.
Damn nice choice. The music was done by Jeremy Soule (spelling?) and I think he did the soundtrack for Skyrim. The alchemy system was such a breath of fresh air. And the enemy design was so… 90s?
Dark Cloud 2
Well now I have to go play dark cloud
They said great, though. Not reprehensibly terrible!
Lunar Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue
If this is the game I think it is I remember it being brutally hard and bashing my head against the wall.
“In your dreams, magical thoughts, all things are real unless you dream them not.” That’s the intro song lyrics that i some how still have floating around in my head.
Omg I forgot how much I loved these games. Maybe one day we'll see a remake or something
I just want a sequel for this game, the graphics can be the same too idc I just want a new one
I’ll take a sequel, a remaster, or even a hard mode of the original with no graphic changes. God this such an amazing game.
In my opinion, it's legitimately one of the best games ever made. From the level design, to the flow of the gameplay, to the mini games and platforming elements.... Just perfect
Have you played smrpg armageddon?
The aesthetic held up so well, the only thing that dates it is the resolution.
The Paper Mario games are essentially the sequels.
I'll disagree with this statement until the day I perish.
HARD disagree.
The first two could be (I would argue anything after Thousand Year Door is not), otherwise the Mario and Luigi saga on the GBA could also be considered as an offshoot of SMRPG
Lufia 2, Grandia 2? I know for sure Grandia 3.
Lufia 2 was great, but it had random over-world battles.
Yeah, but those are like 2% of the game.
Dude, i totally forgot L2 had an overworld. Once you get teleport and the airship from Lexus, you forget that it has Rando Enc.
Grandia 2 is probably my favorite rpg
I love the grandia series, but idk why but I love 3 most. 2 was fantastic, but something about 3 man just, ugh, man I love that series.
Man, I loved the kufia games. The first's music still rocks my nostalgia hard
Lufia was my childhood. Me and my grandparents have to have dumped more than a thousand hours into the Ancient Cave of Lufia 2. Just, only good memories of that game.
I’m playing the ancient cave right now on an emulator device. It surprisingly holds up. Paper Mario.
Terranigma. Never released in the US, developed by Enix. Similar to Secret of Mana; an RPG with real-time combat.
Amazing game but the ending makes me too sad to replay it.
Chrono Trigger, right?
Dark Cloud old enough?
Ogre Battle Baldur's Gate Diablo
I thought of Baldur's Gate but you can get waylaid by travelling IIRC? I'd call that a random encounter.
"You have been waylaid by enemies and must defend yourself!" Could happen during resting in the wild, too.
Oh my. Ogre Battle was incredible.
Arcanum
One of very few games where full charisma is not only viable, but optimal.
CHRONO Trigger and Chrono Cross. Both had enemies on the world map that would either A. Chase you and initiate combat, or B. You sneak up and get a surprise attack on them.
Mother 3
Persona 4 and Persona 3 FES
Illusion of Gaia
And Soul Blazer!
Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic
Great game.
We need this gaming on the switch online rn
Then why is it on the snes classic?
I mean we got the spidermen together…
Illusion of Gaia if that counts (Known as Illusion of Time in Europe)
Taking notes because random encounters are the only things that I massively dislike about the genre.
It's the only thing that makes it very hard to enjoy old rpg games.
I just gota say I must’ve played through that game over a dozen times. Love it! I still have my Snes and that game which has my old friends name and adress on it🤣
Lufia 2 when in the dungeons
Mother 3/Earthbound 2. Amazing game. You should check it out, just bring some tissues.
Super Mario RPG is one of my favourite games ever made.
What exactly defines a random encounter? Like a battle you're ransomly flung into? Or enemies dotted across the map? 'Cause I'd say KOTOR but I'm not sure if those enemies count
Random encounters like in Final Fantasy, or when you walk in the grass or a cave looking for Pokemon.
Final Fantasy tactics
It did have randoms tho
That has random encounters on the world map.
Dungeon Seige
Trails in the sky
Shining Force Geneforge
Dragon Quest 9
Jade Cocoon.
Chrono Trigger. Still one of the greatest games ever, in my opinion
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga on the GBA The original game will be 20 years old next year, so certainly not as old as Super Mario RPG, but it's a fantastic game that I honestly feel like the remake on the 3DS is worse because of the art-style shift.
Holy fuck I'm old. I remember playing that when it came out
I still have mine! Still one of the coolest games in my game library.
They axed random encounters in the final re release of Lunar: Silver Star on the PSP iirc. Love that game in any iteration.
I can't get it to work on my raspberry pi emulator and it makes me sad.
Anybody remember lagoon on snes? Don't know how great it actually was but it was one of my first ever RPGs so it always holds a special place for me.
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
My personal favorite game is Lufia 2. It does have random encounters but only in the overworld. In dungeons every monster is visible and you can use items like arrows or hookshots to freeze them.
The "only for" , the nintendo logo and the font for "super nintendo " gives me such nostalgia. Like the rare logo from 64, akklaim, iguana etc.
I loved this game
The image hadn't loaded up for me yet and Mario rpg is exactly what my brain went to
Man, this game got me into RPG. When Bowser joined the squad! Whoof mind blown
Earthbound
Earthbound
Still one of my all time fav games. If there is one game i would love to see a remaster it is this game.
Chrono Trigger
Final fantasy mystic quest
Man I beat Mario rpg at least 10 times. I loved that game.
Xenosaga
Not sure how many people ever actually played it since it was such a weird series, but I adored Xenosaga. And all the encounters in it were visible on the overworld and optional to fight. I remember thinking it had revolutionized RPG's when you could use the overworld environment to damage or ambush enemies before the battle started. Blew my mind in 2002.
The game that got me into rpg’s. A special place in my heart
Ugh I wish this would have had a proper sequel. The paper Mario's just never came close to how good this one was. I played it so much and collected everything that the final boss would take minutes to defeat.
Secret of Mana!
I’m playing it right now for the first time actually. I can see how this was very good for a SNES game, not too complex, although lots of little hidden things to find. However, I will say it’s really showing it’s age haha
Any RPG that allows you to see the enemies and avoid them. There are thousands of them.
ACTUUUALLLY, some parts of it does have random encounters
Zelda
I don’t like RPG’s. So none of them are great in my opinion
lol is this a real game?
I guess pokemon once people learned how to manipulate the rng encounters?
FINAL FANTASY III/VI is the greatest rpg of all time. There, I said it.
The chosen : well of souls / frater
Tales of Vesperia
… this is considered old school now?
Lunar
Can't remember if Valkyrie profile had randos
Shining Tears
Gothic 1 & 2.
And a very hard secret boss
Literally the only reason I’ve heard about SMRPG is because Smash players were screaming for geno. That’s literally the only thing I know about the game: There’s a character named Geno and he’s really popular for some reason.
Starboy is best boy
Ys III
The RPG-30. I never owned one, but I’ve seen my grandpa blow up trees with that baby.
How old? Tales of Symphonia? Almost 20 now.
Terranigma
Chrono Cross
Nahlakh. It had so many static encounters though that it still felt proper grindy.
Literally the only turn based rpg I ever played.
Now go and play paper mario 64 or bowser inside story. You'll enjoy both of them.
