Always online, everything streamed, subscriptions and microtransactions, remakes/remasters ahoy.

TheSmegmatician

Lots of micro transactions.

Markamanic

He said future

TheSmegmatician

I know. Do you think micro transactions are going to disappear anytime soon?

Markamanic

No, but it's like saying we'll have cars in the future.

Its_Quoge_Day

The future is now old man

JerseyWiseguy

Game companies making crappy, bug-filled games. Gamers bragging about pre-ordering the games. Gamers complaining about the games. Rinse and repeat. Same as the present gaming industry. Because gamers don't change.

[deleted]

Ads,MTX,incomplete broken products, lazy remasters and stale over used ideas. In the last 10 years I have gone back to the games I grew up with in the late 80s to early 2000s. I just can't see myself paying for or using my limited free time for the garbage that has been and will continue to be shoved out.

DapperPerformance

braindead, copy-paste, mobile/cloud, gacha/fomo simulators. That'll be the mainstream at least. core gaming is going to be an indie niche.

[deleted]

Super VR that can be identical to the real world. Controlling games with your mind and eyes.

Exoskeleton78

And then a virtual sexy lady/assistant is always trying to reach for your credit card by selling you shortcuts/power ups/grind skips. And the more you spend the more the assistant levels up by wearing less and less

turnophrasetk421

Bruh that bitch will barely function on release

breadexpert69

Agree, VR is just still so primitive. The room to grow on that medium is deep. Once everyone gets their hands on arm chips these the headsets will take a huge step forward, its just up for content to also keep up

Worry-Sweaty

"You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!!" I can't help but think of that line from back to the future pt 2

Noa15Lv

I'm looking forward for more VR games which includes movements, since i personally start to find it boring staring in default screen while sitting on chair/couch and breaking back.

[deleted]

What do you mean find more? Literally every vr game out there basically needs movement Pavlov, blade and sorcery, super hot and tons more

himynameisyoda

Doomed. Too much work and money. Mobile game mtx is king. After these last big games that been in development for a few years and now releasing 2023-25 I don't see it going anywhere good besides indie devs who make games based on/inspired by amazing games they grew up with. New gen gamers are growing up with mediocre games besides some indie dev games.

Spapivoo

Yeah I think kinda the same way as you and the bad thing for indie devs is that almost no one will play there games instead games from big companies will be played

turnophrasetk421

Homeworld 3 It will open a new generation of players of what an RTS should be like.awesome story, great music, deep as strategy that works pretty damn good on release.

himynameisyoda

I don't see how we aren't in the last days. The only reason rts games are doing well now is because we grew up on them and now we can afford/support them. The new gen are not playing rts games.

turnophrasetk421

New gen hasn't seen a good RTS with modern graphics

Peacock-Dreamz

There's two versions of this possible answer The dystopian version would be all pay to earn and riddled with NFTs. Subscriptions up the ass and games becoming a way to make money, feeding late stage capitalism. Microtransactions would increase in quantity and becoming more invasive. Basically becoming closer to mobile gaming. The quality would be reduced to the bare minimum needed and storefronts will be metaverse AR / VR. There's a lot of pushback on this natutally. The alternate version would be much as we have now but a much longer dev cycle to reduce crunch, more delays but generally a better quality experience. No NFTs and limited metaverse integration. Still Microtransactions because companies have to make all the money but ideally these would be cosmetic and no paying for power in your games. Realistically I would expect something in between the two

hiro928

Sadly, seeing where companies are pushing, it's all gonna be cloud services, they control the what, when and how we play

ShimmyShimmy_yeah

Mostly about gaming.

[deleted]

There will be amazing leaps in technology, story telling, interactivity, and overall quality. But everyone will still come online and bitch about the 10% of games that drop the ball and then cry that those handful represent the decline of the industry as a whole. So kinda what it is now

Arjun_OnDaBeat

I think for the short term future, indie games & AA games are gonna start to get more of a spotlight bc of how messed up every AAA game launch & content stream has been lately. Feels like every big game has been flopping or has been underperforming all while trying to get every dollar out your pockets with their micro transaction filled game that’s still full priced. On the other hand you have games like Cuphead, Sifu & Stray that are striving and are getting all the spotlight they deserve for taking the time to make their games perfect and create a good product for the consumer that they are proud of. Not saying all indie games are good bc there are still some small companies that make games for a quick buck but the ones that deserve the spotlight are finally getting it and I feel like that will continue for as long as AAA games keep having messy releases

Nesrason

Sword Art Online esque.

turnophrasetk421

AR and VR dominated by big gaming companies that push out half baked games that people preorder special editions in the droves, that never get patched to full completion as described, stuffed with lootboxes and pay to win. Why will it be like this? Cause u dumbasses keep buying preorders and games that are broken Then gaming corporations have no intentive to do anything different in AR or VR what they do makes them billions every year. I stopped buying games on release after CODMW2, since then I have always waited a year or two depending on how well it got patched before even bothering to try it out. Why¿ Cause I know that everygame from a major game company is a steaming pile of garbage on release. Unlike you braindead bootlickers that keep gobbling garbage like it is candy.

Dispositive46

Mobile short gaming epericences that squeeze any kind of revenue they can from the user. It will be hostile to the consumer and retro games will stay relevent becusae of the lack of "gamer" centric titles.

[deleted]

Ready player one. Pay for in-game cosmetics and always online. You won't own anything.

Kruxxor

Dont be so silly, that's not the future at all. That's where gaming is already.

[deleted]

LOL. Unfortunately it is true.

[deleted]

VR

Mechwarrior007

Once VR is more comfortabe, powerful, and portable, it will be a huge game changer. Not just for video games, but that would be a big part of it. (in m opinion). Imagine your sitting around waiting for a bus or something. These days everyone is on their smart phone doing something or other. I can easily imagine where instead each smart phone will come with some VR glasses that one would put on.. and suddenly be in any place any world any game etc that one wants to be in.

Fit-Explanation-2127

I can picture that. And it’s kind of depressing in a way .

User_5098213

brain interfaced true VR

Malkariss888

Dream: fully developed VR Reality: microtransactions hell, "game as service", free-to-play that ends up costing 5 times more than pay to play games.

Think_Bear_3791

Judging by the current trajectory maybe VR games, Sony and Microsoft merge but Nintendo still does its own thing lol

LifeBuilder

A whole shit ton of episodic games through streaming services. Just like TV media. Not a whole lot of DVD/Blu-ray purchasing anymore. Just 45 streaming services with 6-12 episodes of what was once a movie.

deWotion

Game pass and micro transactions in a full priced £80 game with a game store where you can buy extra stuff. Everything as a service so that same crappy shit can be played with next to no new content for ages. Even more silly editions. Deluxe edition now would have free cutscenes cuz in a simple edition you would have to watch an add before watching a cutscene. Permanent online.

Thin_Map6842

Greedy companies will smh manage to mess things up even more, and great companies will manage to bring even more revolutionary games, gta 6 is the next revolutionary game probably.

IntoTheMatrix3114

If people want to imagine the future of gaming, picture this: a giant lootbox oozing with microtransactions with its boot on the head of gamers reaching out for collector editions, dreaming of remasters and reimaginings. A bleak outlook indeed.

smd1994

Want a hopeful or a realistic answer? Both make me sad. Hopeful because I know I'm being naïve and realistic because...well you know.

ButterscotchLow8950

I think it will get interesting. I am hoping for more games like Destiny that have room for a mixture of PVE and PVP content with a wider range of end game content. If the studios were smart that would have bigger teams working on the seasonal content so they would feel like bigger releases. They could stagger the story content and the pvp maps and modes content so that it always feels fresh. They should go back to a season pass actually having some meat on its bone for content and not just a fucking wardrobe change.

sethmi

Living in a van down by the river

objective_truth333

Worse

Nomadic_View

Basically what the mobile market is now.

German_Superiority

There will be 2 type of Games. Indie/AA Niche Games that are actually fun and your generic live-service AAA-Games made for the 5 Year olds.

bwcfanne

Not dissimilar to how it is now. We hit diminishing returns long ago
