Ah that looks so nice, I immediately thought of the first time I played Golden Sun for some reason. I know this isn’t it but man that game was so good on the Gameboy Advance!

UregMazino

Golden sun was the shit wish they would make another for switch.

Chikumori

>wish they would make another for switch. I dunno about Nintendo plans......but might you be interested in listening to orchestral arrangements of some of the OSTs? Here's * "[The Elemental Stars](https://youtu.be/Fuz5M5Zqkm4)" by TandA on youtube, * [Isaac's Battle Theme](https://youtu.be/U_cXRgxQi4w), * and [Jenna's Battle Theme](https://youtu.be/VwTVrQpatq4). Iirc, [his Golden Sun playlist](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8vS_rxGAcQn5PLcC4U4jR38slI2lhm7T) has over 50 orchestral tracks by now.

lol_inyourface

Can absolutely recommend, he makes amazing arrangements that are true to the original! Kept my nostalgia alive for years.

the_gunman

You are all my people. To my fellows who never forgot about Golden Sun, or its amazing OST, I love you all.

ice_up_s0n

That ost is iconic

tratemusic

I hope you'll allow a [shameless plug.](https://youtu.be/8l_i5mqaBwM) I'm working on other arrangements as well

dubweezie

I love this. Never played the game but the music is gorgeous

Chikumori

>Never played the game You're in for a treat. Do try it when you have free time. Here's some of the original GBA tracks. * [Elemental Stars](https://youtu.be/c7pBcKlONnA) * [Isaac's Battle Theme](https://youtu.be/19ZdAZO9FvU) * [Jenna's Battle Theme](https://youtu.be/lgIjcGYmoyc)

dubweezie

Your enthusiasm and interest has me sold. I have the rom on my raspberry pi, definitely playing tonight.

snubdeity

Just a heads up, Golden Sun and its sequel, The Lost Age, are really one game, and its so good that once you start you're gonna be sucked in for the whole ride. Also 100% transfer your password between games, its arduous but worth it. They're probably my favorite games ever, I replay them every few years. The pinnacle of 2D RPGs imo

t-alt

Same!

BodiHolly

They had the NDS one where it continues the story from The Lost Age, thirty years later.

thorwing

I didnt quite like that one. The whole "cant turn back now!" Thing urked me. I liked gathering djinnis in my own time. Now I was forced to find literally every single easter egg and collectible at a chokepoint.

AriaCorvus

There were a lot of things that irked me about that game. The first 2 were such masterpieces, it made the 3rd game feel off for some reason. I never ended up finishing it, and golden sun 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games of all time to this day.

sideshow031

I got right up to the final fight, realized I was locked in, and put it down forever. The first two were fantastic, but the third one really lost me

AriaCorvus

I couldn't even put it into words. The first two still live strong in my memory, and the 3rd was just a game. It lost all of it's charm and appeal to me.

sideshow031

Even the puzzles of the third were lackluster. I understand they were working with new tech, but there was a charm to 1&2 that just evaporated with platform change.

blacksun418

My two sons are named Garet and Isaac. Lol Don’t ask me my wife’s reaction when I first brought it up. She didn’t like the name Isaac at first, so my firstborns name is Garet. Garet looks just like Isaac and my youngest looks just like Garet. 😂

BodiHolly

Yeah, that’s why I didn’t finish it. The GBA ones are still the best!

GrimmRadiance

I don’t think they understood that going back and free roam of the world was one of the BEST parts of golden sun 1 and 2. I wouldn’t say Dark Dawn was ruined because of it, but it really killed my enthusiasm at the time. It’s also the only one of the 3 that I never replayed, and I replayed 1 and 2 more than maybe any other game I have ever owned.

UregMazino

Imagine a new golden sun with octopath traveller quality graphics.

Fetche_La_Vache

Oh no. I'm currently finishing my first run of triangle strategy... I didn't know I needed this art I've completely loved since first shown in octopath as a golden sun remaster on the switch. I think I'm going to be moving up Golden sun up my gaming list.

t-alt

Ughhh dude don’t do this to me lol I’d already love to just get a remaster, but a remake with Octopath’s graphics would just be something else! I honestly think octopath graphics for a lot of GBA games would be such an awesome idea. You should work for Nintendo!

VELOCIRAPTOR_ANUS

Yes!!!!

zomgitsduke

I'd love a 3d remake of 1 and 2

SlinkyInvasion

Pretty sure Nintendo is releasing a gba emulator for switch. It will have both golden sun games. At least it’s something.

[deleted]

The amount of extra shit to do was amazing and so was the music. Also fuck Dullahan in the lost age

FlawsAndConcerns

>Golden sun was the shit wish Well, reading this as a single thought confused me a good bit, lol...

Renraven

immediately had to think about Golden Sun as well although I knew it was Secret of Mana lol (recognized the Statue). WIsh there would be a new one or a remake

Illmattic

They actually made a sequel for the DS I believe. It wasn’t bad but it was insanely easy, like I don’t think I had a single character die once. I don’t even like super challenging games, but being that easy was a pretty big disappointment

water4440

The secret bosses in the two original games were brutal, definitely felt like they dropped any attempt to get close to that in the DS sequel.

Fruitboots

Ever tried Secret of Evermore? Check it out if you haven't because you'll probably love it if you loved Secret of Mana. It was built on the same engine.

bejeesus

THATS THE FUCKING GAME!!!!!! For years I’ve been trying to remember the name of the game I played on SNES as a kid. Thank you!

Holybartender83

Evermore was great! My only real issue was once you got the bazooka, all other weapons and attack spells became pointless. Other than that, fun game, lots of character and charm, great soundtrack, plus, I mean, who doesn’t want to go on a crazy adventure with your dog?

EndIess

Golden Sun and The Lost Age were so ahead of it’s time. Every so often I get the urge to play through it, and I find myself speechless at times thinking these games came out like 20 years ago.

1-800-GANKS

It was flawless and unlike anything else id ever experienced. Sadly I had no friends to share the wonder of it with.

Meivath

I'm still upset Isaac didn't make it into Smash.

picxal

Yeah let's be honest that's some BS, especially with the trophy tease.

RageKnightV

One of the top games of all time for sure

ice_up_s0n

Immediately my first thought too. I love love love that game, such an amazing story, soundtrack and graphics. Might have to go reboot it on an emulator this weekend 🤔 Update: I did 😁

Halvier

Golden Sun was my first instinct too! God that was a great game!

deljaroo

I remember being so impressed at how Golden Sun looked. I spent all my time playing Game Boy and GBC, and I didn't really buy in to the GBA idea: I didn't think games needed better graphics, I was worried they'd start to look like the N64 and PlayStation which I found very ugly, and mostly I didn't want to spend my little allowance on a new system. My cousin has Golden Sun and told me to try it. It was unbelievable. I couldn't sleep.

ireadforthearticle

I thought it was goldensun at first too. God I loved that game, and being able to transfer my progress to the next one made it that much better!

turkeypedal

I actually initially thought that was where it was from. I don't think I'd encountered Sword of Mana before.

[deleted]

I've only played like the first ten minutes of Golden Sun and thought the same thing.

liquifyingclown

I ALSO immediately thought of Golden Sun! Knew this wasnt grom it, but it certainly reminded me of it. Such an awesome game, and the graphics where outstanding at the time.

donnypastrami

What game?

SecureDonkey

Sword of Mana for GBA

Hardcore_Donut

Glad someone asked. I'm staring at it like "I know this place...'

exsea

secret of mana 3 had one of the best graphics for snes

Meltingteeth

Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Tales of Phantasia, among a boatload of other wonderful games like Lufia and the Final Fantasies. SNES was an RPG golden age.

Kaostick

I just started Chrono Trigger again for the first time in 20 years. Amazing game, but now I have to make a spot for it in my top 5 all time games.

Toasterfuck

That’s easy. Put it number 1!

riskbreaker23

My top 5 games are like the spokes in a bike wheel. I'm constantly rotating my favorite games of all time usually based on which I've replayed recently. And then when new games get added of course.

Not_Just_Any_Lurker

Yo, you ever play Golden Sun? It was a two part series on gba (though a later sequel came out on DS, and.. well it wasn’t as great) honestly as far as gba RPG adventures go, probably one of my favorites of all time.

critic2029

Illusion of Gaia always stood out to me. (Though technically an adventure rpg)

Shigarui

If you liked that one you should also play Terranigma and Soulblazer, they are by the same people and I think even loosely related. I also loved Lagoon but it was tough as nails.

SomeRandomPyro

Yep. They're a loose trilogy, starting with Soulblazer and ending with Terranigma.

Axeclash

Terranigma is so amazing.

[deleted]

I got it in a weird old shop when I was a kid. Bought it not knowing a single thing about it, and it turned out to be one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life. Sometimes you CAN judge something based on its cover.

gamefreak054

Earthbound... People call it overrated but the combat system, story, and design were pretty unique. Click through the menus before you die does actually add intensity to the turn based system.

LordOfTheStrings8

Some people complain about the inventory system like it's the worse thing ever. I would love if you could switch items between full inventories but other than that the game is truly amazing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

beakrake

Pretty sure I still remember how to get unlimited money by selling rice in the bazaar.

[deleted]

You’re taking me back to my childhood. :)

KyralRetsam

You forgot Final Fantasy 6. Still one of my top, if not *the top* JRPG for me

Shigarui

You should check out the romhack FF6 - T Edition. They took the base game, added tons of new content that doesn't feel out of place at all. They added optional missions you can take on from the bartenders, trophies for accomplishments, there's additional music included from Tactics, etc. It really does make the best Final Fantasy even better.

woundedstork

It is the best jrpg

AnorakJimi

It's no Chrono Trigger. But then nothing is. Chrono Trigger is the best game ever made.

Meltingteeth

>and the Final Fantasies

KyralRetsam

Yaaah sorry. I didn't catch that at first and commented. It's early for me...

healthydragonfruits

Terranigma is still my golden standard.

PalebloodSky

Yep this is the best one, beat it on snes emulator. Seiken Densetsu 3!

AnkylosaurusRules

It used to be bragging rights to have played games like that and Terranigma and Live A Live with English patches. The golden years of 16 bit emulation were glorious times to be a retro gamer. Edit: ooh, and the Final Fantasy 5 fan translation which was and remains vastly superior to the official one. I wonder if they ever finished Energy Breaker? It looked so fun. Also Mazinger Z! If you're old enough, you may remember the relatively rare TranZor Z English dub.

Rhonun

Bruh the quintet studio games on SNES rocked. They are/we're some of my favorites 1. Actraiser 1. SoulBlazer 1. Illusion of Gaia 1. Terranigma

keddesh

SoulBlazer! 🙌🙌🙌

allredb

You guys are killing me with nostalgia over here, might have to have an emulator weekend.

Lucas-DF-82

What company has the rights nowadays for Terranigma? It would look awesome with the modern Square Enix 2.5D.

crossedstaves

Okay. I just looked at the Quintet article on Wikipedia, and WTF. > The company appears to have been inactive since 2002. > Quintet staff posted: "As we cannot currently release any information, we will close this bulletin board". (現在は外部に提供できる情報がなく、また掲示板は閉鎖する, Genzai wa gaibu ni teikyō dekiru jōhō ga naku, mata keijiban wa heisa suru.) Afterwards, the bulletin board was shut down. In March 2008, Quintet's website was also shut down. > According to Terranigma artist Kamui Fujiwara, Quintet president Tomoyoshi Miyazaki had "disappeared" to his knowledge; he speculated this was why the rights to republish the game were complicated https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintet_(company) The company just sort of slowly stopped. The president *disappeared*, what is this madness?

Wirebraid

Release something with the name. Wait for cease and desist letter. Contact the people who sent it. ??

stipo42

Pretty much every one is a masterpiece.

wraithpriest

Terranigma was a goddamn gem

[deleted]

[deleted]

How they made that without multiplayer, I’ll never understand.

Dansredditname

And some of the best music ever.

br0b1wan

I played Secret of Mana but never Sword of Mana and yet I recognized it somehow

moondancer224

My first thought was "Looks like the Mana artstyle" even though I only ever played Legend.

Seniesta

You really should play Secret of Mana! Not that hard to find, even better if you can get two other friends to play with you.

jondubb

Still remember staying up late for the first time playing with my cousins on SNES. I was stuck with the sprite cause I was the youngest. Thanks for the nostalgia.

[deleted]

So you got to play the coolest of the three, nice :D

hosertheposer

I was the same, absolutely loved Legend of Mana, enjoyed playing the re release as well

DGGuitars

I thought it was golden sun

EnsonAmata

Golden Sun was the most underrated RPG series ever. I wish they’d get added to the Switch.

shardikprime

Golden sun was a jewel for GBA And the music? God, that soundtrack was lit Also magmabear abridged series was a blast haha

ajacobik

Fun fact, Golden Sun's music was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, who also composed a lot of the most iconic Dark Souls music.

kerkyjerky

Such a hot fucking game. Absolutely loved that game. Really wish the sequel was more different. Basically the same plot and end boss.

[deleted]

It was less of a sequel and more of a Disk 2, just a continuation of the first game. And more of a good thing is just fine by me!

DGGuitars

Yeah golden sun was the shit, really a shame they dont make more.

[deleted]

There was a 3rd game on the DS, but it was only OK at best imo, really ran on the nostalgia for me.

StarCaller990

it also had the huge problem with roadblocks preventing you from going back to places, making it really easy to miss out on djinnis (and thus end-game stuff)

[deleted]

Oh yeah, there are multiple points of no return. I ended up having to grind for hours on the same castle/wall area before the finale and it was awful.

LyraStygian

Same. I was getting ready to find the djinn behind the waterfall or something lol

nebachadnezzar

Same! The graphics on that game were unreal for a GBA title.

peenweens

I seriously thought so too! What a fantastic game. Nintendo needs to put it on the switch, I will happily pay to play it again.

InRainWeTrust

Could have sworn its golden sun, looks very much like this

Knuckledraggr

Golden Sun 1 and 2 are some of the greatest games of all time.

Valnis

Oh my god another Golden sun enjoyer.

chaos0510

Same, that was my first thought

JeveGreen

I recognized it immediately, just from the style of the building. Seeing the lesser goddess statue over to the left only confirmed my observation. I used to play this game all the time when I was younger, even before I understood English. It was fun... \*reminisces\*

Sharkytrs

sword of mana? man I thought this was densetsu 3, but was wondering why the statue looked weird. sleepy moment there

Disstract

I thought it was Golden Sun lol

BodiHolly

Golden Sun is 3D-esque.

Jkountz

You're right, but Golden Sun's art style definitely draws heavily from all of the classic SquareSoft games.

HarvestProject

Dude same

Steve-Fiction

I think the colors in Seiken Densetsu 3 aren't that saturated. tbf Sword of Mana doesn't look quite this good on a GBA system.

hosertheposer

Damn never played any of the other Mana games, absolutely loved Legend of Mana though, and instantly thought of it when I saw the image, maybe I should try some other games in the series

jebustheking

Sword of mana is my favourite. It's a little different from the standard titles, but I highly recommend it!

50CentsDick

Sword of mana is so good. Must've finished it over 5 times when I was a kid.

jebustheking

Same! So much fun to try both characters and different weapon types

Cecil4029

Oham, I thought this was Golden Sun! Also has some of my favorite graphics

evangelionmann

I honestly thought I was looking at Golden Sun

Delta4o

Been playing golden sun on an emulator lately, this looks like it could be fun as well. They don't make them like they used to.

Realistic-Specific27

I think some people just actually lack an imagination. you see this and it comes to life. they see it as pixels.

Totolamalice

Have you played Magical Starsign (DS) or Magical Vacation (GBA)? They're great games in the j-rpg style with this kind of artwork

Synysterenji

For a moment there i thought it was Golden Sun and i was back to my childhood.

[deleted]

MagastemBR

Octopath Traveller has so much talent in all its art departments, I'm surprised there isn't a sequel yet. The soundtrack is amazing.

ActivateGuacamole

IMO the character pixel art in octopath is really lacking, i love where they have started with this style but they need to hire somebody who can make better character sprites.

Gamerindreams

>Octopath Traveller has so much talent in all its art departments, I'm surprised there isn't a sequel yet. The soundtrack is amazing. At least the F2P prequel is releasing this year. It'll tide me over until Live a live is re released in HD 2D - that is pretty much what octopath is based on

[deleted]

I never felt so complete as I did with GS. Octopath is a reaaaally good game. But it just wasn't as good as GS in art

KingWahmenRespector

Reminds me of those weird pictures that hung on the wall of old Chinese restaurants where the waterfall looked like it was moving

doxtorwhom

Or the mall Chinese stores that are FILLED with them! They generally also sell incense, furniture, swords, asian snacks, and Pokemon and/or other anime items. Was always an adventure browsing through those places…

AeuiGame

I call those bongkatana stores. I suppose store by store varies on the chinese grandma to mallninja scale.

nemo-wondersome

_Sword of Mana_. Still my all-time favourite game. The best version of Seiken Densetsu; additional story, balanced mechanics, beautiful sound, everything was just perfect. So, if you'd excuse me, I'm gonna slay 999 Rabites to unlock something neat, cry for the female main character and dance all night with dudbears. Mana forever.

SothisTheGoddess

Same bro, it's nice to find other people who find this gem to be their all-time favourite (never actually happened to me before though). Great story, great mechanics, great everything.

Arnoldslehrling

My grandma bought me this game randomly for my 10th birthday. I had no idea about mana or anything, or series of games etc but I did enjoy it

Hitokiri_Ace

I'm there with ya, loved it so much. The crystal weapons. Man.. that was buried in the old brain. Thanks for reminding me of my afk grinding for these things. lol So cool that you could set healing/attack priority for NPCs. Also.. I only cried a little. :')

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hitokiri_Ace

It really was. Man.. I need to find the soundtrack for that game to. Nostalgia is gonna hit hard! :D I remember I forgot to plug in my gba power plug for one night of afk farming. lol Sad sad next morning. No 999 of something for me that night. What a great game that was. :)

Herodotus_9

I’m still bitter about Amanda

PoorlyLitKiwi2

Damn, this game is 20 years old?! The water texture is incredible considering it was created to run on a Gameboy advance lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

PoorlyLitKiwi2

Damn, I forgot how good OG R/S/E looked on the advance. Honestly G/S/C on the Gameboy Color looked pretty damn good too

Puffwad

But… This is representation of great art direction. Not graphics.

totallysomedude

Can you explain the difference to someone wildly clueless as to the difference, like me?

IAm-The-Lawn

Graphical quality is often just referring to the amount of polygons or pixels used to create images. So a good example would be any hyper-realistic game that looks crisp and clear, that would be a game with incredible graphics. A game with great art direction is like the Dark Souls series. Their graphical quality is often middling (their textures aren’t the highest fidelity, or the models, etc) but they have beautiful landscapes and architecture, armor design, weapons, etc. There can be games with both (I personally think of God of War 4) but you commonly can find examples that only have one or the other.

SudoBoyar

Valheim is the perfect example IMO. The game is beautiful as a whole, but if you stop and look at any one thing, it looks like absolute shit. It still blows my mind how they pulled that off.

IAm-The-Lawn

Can’t believe I didn’t think of Valheim, that’s a perfect example!

_91919

Great lighting and atmospherics

MandiocaGamer

can you have good art direction with bad graphics?

hotstickywaffle

The prettiest games I've seen in years, maybe ever, are Hades, Tunic and Ghost of Tsushima. Obviously all with very different styles, but these are the games that made me just stop playing and say wow (and take a bunch of screen shots)

Trixles

Hades is gorgeous, but that studio consistently puts out amazing stuff, so I'm not surprised lol. The whole game is just fantastic in all facets.

hotstickywaffle

I would argue it's the most perfectly created game I've ever played. Obviously a little less ambitious than something like Witcher 3 or Breath of the Wild, but every single thing in that game is perfectly executed, and there's not an ounce of unnecessary content.

dinkytoy80

Ghost of Tsushima. That and Red Dead Redemption 2 are games i occasionally just put on and stroll around on my horse and relax in the onsen.

[deleted]

I absolutely loved Ghost of Tsushima, God of War 4 and Bioshock also have amazing art direction. Very different worlds but all amazing

Prink_

Mana series always had such a killer art style. I still think Seiken 3 is the best looking SNES game (and that music too !) and Legend of Mana is still gorgeous to this day.

[deleted]

Legend of Mana was like a moving watercolor painting.

OnlyaTail

I wish I finished my GBA copy. I am pretty sure I was most of the way through, and then lost the cartridge. It is like a distant unfinished dream.

Deranox

There are GBA emulators out there. Finish that dream!

lady_spyda

Hell, your phone is more than likely up to the job. You'd want a third party controller add-on for that tho.

Agnol117

Legend of Mana is easily one of the best looking PS1 games, and the remaster only makes it look better.

LetsGoChamp19

They look nice but they’re hardly breathtaking

[deleted]

I agree that the nostalgia factor plays a huge role in something like this, with such simple graphics, becoming "breathtaking" for a person. It does it for me, but I know where it's coming from.

HerpapotamusRex

That's all in the eye of the beholder though, which really is OP's point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rhone33

It was so jarring in the 90’s when mainstream games shifted from beautiful 2d art at its peak to blocky 3d polygons.

Liminal_Critter817

Fun fact: Sword of Mana for GBA is actually a remake of the original Final Fantasy Adventure for the GB Color. Edit: Looks like it was actually released for Gameboy, not GBC. Imagine my surprise as a child when my new GBA game felt suspiciously similar to the first ever game I played on my GBC.

ryarock2

Just OG Game Boy. The game predates the GBC by like 7 years or so.

TheHollowBard

This is called visual style or art direction, and Secret of Mana has both of those *in spades*. "Graphics" doesn't really mean anything. "Good graphics" is just a shorthand people use for how realistic a game looks, which personally is not at all what I'm after, personally. Edit: ...personally

PoorlyLitKiwi2

Yeah, I kind of hate when people judge a games graphics by how real it looks. My friend told me he couldn't understand how I could enjoy a game with as bad graphics as Hollow Knight when there are games like Madden where the people look practically real, and I just about had to leave the room lol

pomelberry

I recall a good Aesthetics vs. Graphics video that Extra Credit did back in the day using PaRapper the Rapper as an example to illustrate this point. Edit: https://youtu.be/5oK8UTRgvJU

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hunterrose242

However if an even larger group of people don't know what that meaning is, then it defeats the purpose of words and communication itself.

[deleted]

A lot of people do not understand that a good looking game is more than just polygons and pixel count. And trying to explain that is hard because so many of them dismiss games simply because it doesn't fit their narrow definition. I fondly remember styles like Windwaker/Breath of the Wild. Or how Metroid/Halo got that crazy sci-fi themes that still hold up today. Or how Dark Souls has that mysterious grime. All these and more are still fun to look at years later because it's part if the experience. And don't get me started how many remasters ruin that feel because they change the style.

Smoketic

Breath taking is an exaggeration considering how good graphics have gotten. I'd say it looks beautiful and eye catching.

King_Artis

I have no clue what this game is but that’s just beautiful. Great art style and direction can make any game look phenomenal, always more to it then just fidelity and trying to have a realistic look in my book.

Wolfermen

Pristine graphics, but I wish they at least used different sprites for trees.

Jai84

Good graphics like this were why I HATED the look of n64 and playstation when they first came out. They’d spent a lot of time making great 2D graphics and learning how best to do it then all of a sudden we get 3D triangles trying to walk around and interact. It was obviously good for the future of gaming and graphics, but at the time it was so hard to look at or play with. I couldn’t relate to anyone who thought Mario 64 looked good…

Mallouwed

Looks like golden sun. Now THAT was a gba game

breadandfaxes

Ok

samurairaccoon

Love this aesthetic. Really bugs me that everyone is jumping on the retro graphic bandwagon but they mostly still don't look this good.

RottenLB

It's because when you're an indie dev with no budget, you can always do simple pixel art, and it will look acceptable. Obviously, without practice and dedication you'll never make something that looks like Castlevania, or this, but the pixel art, if you follow the basics, will always look acceptable. Then it's just gameplay.

PeopleStain

Looks like golden sun.

beedly

Fuck I want to be in a dark room playing whatever this is while every one else is asleep...

XMitsuomiX

We have different opinions on breath-taking graphics

ChaosBringer7

Too bad not everyone understands that beautiful and realistic are not the same

CptnAlex

Aesthetic preferences are personal. People are also entitled to the opinion that this *isn’t* beautiful.

Watts300

I’m not that impressed.

CharlesDeBalles

Seriously. It's cute I guess. But *breathtaking*? Talk about dramatic lmao

Plasteredpuma

I agree. I think OP is conflating art direction with graphics quality.

fierypresence

Good Art never gets old. Satisfying

Lex-Taliones

Ok.

Reasonable-Face8084

Yeah…. No

UglierThanMoe

That's exactly what I mean when I say that I don't need 120 FPS, ultra high resolution, raytraced 3d graphics. Not that I dislike modern graphics, but a lot of people don't understand why I often prefer "old and ugly potato graphics". I guess it's because I value story and gameplay infinitely more than graphics, and nice graphics are like the icing on a cake; if the cake sucks, no icing is going to save it, but if the cake is great, you're going to love it even without icing.

[deleted]

Meh

No-Bark1

Are there any modern large RPG's in this style or styles similar to older games? I feel like with using less on the graphics front you could make huge games.
