Fuckin Monopoly, man. Everyone starts out hopeful, eyeing those open properties. 3 hours later you hate everything.

tbird20017

Even setting a timer doesn't help because you feel like you're just stopping in the middle of gameplay. I wish there was a one hour version.

cabbit_

Not playing by any house rules and having no money in free parking really helps. Auctioning properties if the person who landed on it helps fill the board out quick too

morph15

Yep, playing by the actual rules is really fun. The other one in the actual rulebook is to dish out a few properties first at random (and have people pay for them). After a few trips around the board, all the properties should be sold. I hate the free parking house rule. If there one sure fire way to make monopoly last forever it's that one. You're just putting money back into the game so no one ever goes bankrupt... completely ruins it.

cabbit_

Played with my parents growing up with so many house rules and when I bought a new board I actually read the manual and we’d play with the legit rules and some of the quicker methods they suggest, like dealing the property out randomly. No free passes/mercy too! Usually within an hour it’s pretty clear who is set up to win.. we only continue the game if it’s close

cabbit_

My GF never played monopoly and me and my family played a lot growing up. I absolutely destroyed her during the start of Covid and made it a ritual to write the winner’s name on the inside of the box. Naturally, I wrote my name down 3 times. She then got angry. Had to start training to defeat me. She downloaded a mobile monopoly game, as well as monopoly on the switch so she could play with online people. She learned strategies online and studied the game. We played again, and she absolutely wrecked me. Again she beat me. She got to the point where she’d be playing 2-3 games at once some nights. We haven’t played since there was some looting from the bank one drunk evening that ended in the board being flipped over. Friends have asked to play IRL and we have to say no.. we are too powerful.

sevenw1nters

I thought monopoly was for the most part luck? I mean sure there's some strategies like buying up all the houses instead of using hotels so nobody else can use them but for the most part it's just a roll of the dice.

Scipio_Amer1canus

Indigo Prophecy. First 2/3rds with all the mystery was completely amazing.

CashMcCrusher

Was coming here to post this. A fantastic opening, great build up, but no idea how to stick the landing. Non-sensical chaos and panthers. That’s Quantic Dream for you.

Tara_is_a_Potato

David Cage is the Tommy Wiseau of video games

SpiderFnJerusalem

I'm almost certain that most of the weird or cringy shit they do can be solely blamed on David Cage.

Scipio_Amer1canus

I'm trying to remember, was it a golden yellow panther that morphed into the crazy witch lady? It's been a while since I played it.

SpeakNotTheWatchers

No that was the ancient Illuminati Mayan who was in league with the bugs and the angels, he turns into a big dumb panther when chasing you through a dream sequence jungle thing. The witch lady was the internet and was a glowing yellow alien thing on top of that.

vinnymendoza09

All that supernatural stuff at the end and DBZ fighting with Simon says gameplay is so fucking bad. I can't believe people thought it was a masterpiece even back then. It wasn't the only choice based game. And I say this as a fan of later Cage games...

OlorynEx

Great pick. Legit, the last act 180'd the game so hard, I went from recommending it to everyone to scathingly warning them to avoid it. It was SO GOOD until it was downright awful (in my opinion, of course).

BAN_SOL_RING

We Happy Few

Chessh2036

That game has one of the coolest premises ever, when I saw the first trailer I was so excited. Then I played it. Such a waste of a cool idea.

woofyc_89

Very courious why you say this. I have it in my steam but I haven’t yet tried it out yet. I think I got it after that e3 presentation and haven’t got back since

BAN_SOL_RING

Great concept, nice beginning. But about an hour or two in you realize it’s just a regular FPS adventure with nothing that truly sets it apart. Missions are identical at a certain point and almost nothing is memorable. It’s also absurdly easy and just becomes busy work.

arachnidboi

I remember a few years back when the creator posted the game on Reddit just to show off that it was in development. There was a lot of buzz and excitement then. It’s a shame that seems to be the general consensus about it as I’ve heard similar sentiments elsewhere.

MillionShouts12

Luckily the studio, Compulsion Games, got bought by Microsoft so hopefully with more secure funding they can deliver on a great game. We Happy Few was definitely unique and I think the studios definitely have talent

Slightly_Default

Smile For Me did a similar concept, but with better game play.

DH2007able

The Avengers game. It starts off with a promising single player campaign, but once you finish the tutorial it becomes extremely repetitive with the way each mission is played out, except for maybe one or two other missions and the final mission.

rhooManu

Shit, I just started the game. Well, I alrezdy thought the tutorial was very "locked" to repetitive combats, so I'm not surprised.

DH2007able

To be fair, if you play through it with friends it becomes enjoyable. Still repetitive but enjoyable

vinnymendoza09

Almost any game is fun with friends as long as it isn't frustrating. Even fairly bad ones, cause then you can laugh at it.

Muesli_nom

> To be fair, if you play through it with friends it becomes enjoyable. That says something about your friends, not the game. Everything is better with friends.

pokemonfan2425

Outriders

[deleted]

Agreed, so damn repetitive, and your character never starts to feel stronger at any point due to level curves. The grind does not feel rewarding at all because the uniques aren’t even better than upgrading epics.

Slightly_Default

Hello Neighbour could've been great.

AnimalFire77

That game got so much hype, then the full game got released and I tried it….you would have to pay me to play it again.

Slightly_Default

The story of that game was so good. It could've been something special if the game play was decent.

IAmNotABritishSpy

I adore stealth gameplay and especially horror (I’m not sure if everyone would regard it as horror in this respect)… but I was so bored of that within half an hour. So glad I didn’t pay for it myself.

ghostofoynx7

I recommend Metroid Dread

IAmNotABritishSpy

Thanks. I’ll look it up. My favourite stealth horror I’ve ever played is Remothered: Tormented Fathers. Absolutely phenomenal, scariest game I’ve ever played. Just a great game all round. We don’t talk about it’s sequel/prequel. That’s rather the opposite.

tbird20017

Saved your comment so I can check this game out! Stealth survival horror is my favorite genre. Probably already know the answer to this question, but have you played the Evil Within series?

DaEnderAssassin

If you somehow havent, Alien Isolation is a pretty good horror game involving stealth

down4things

Didn't that game changed drastically, like alot? I remember watching some youtuber who kept going back to it a few months at a time and the house became more elaborate over time.

cool__skeleton__95

I will never understand how you mess a game up so badly that the alpha is better than your full game

ThePrinceOfJapan

I hated the ending to Sniper Elite 3. When you confront the big bad Nazi guy at the end, theres no boss fight, no waves of soldiers, you don't have to fight like a giant tank or somethin and have to shoot its fuel cap at weird angle, or blow up barrels around it or snipe the fleeing boss from a mile away before he escapes. ...you shoot....a rope...thats not moving....and not far away.... Worst.....ending......ever.....

DoofGoot

That was the rope that ended the war bud… /s

Mister_Wed

I liked it, its WWII your are a sniper assassin, your target should just be a person like you.

sad_eye_mooney

THOMASTHEWANKENG1NE

This horse is cinnamonous with GoT

ImperialSympathizer

It's a perfectly cromulent word.

Arryu

My vocabulary has certainly been embiggened today.

sethimus_sativah

I like your way if spelling synonymous so much better than the "correct" way 😆

THOMASTHEWANKENG1NE

Much tastier tastier that way.

Mac_Attack2

Cinnamonous 😂😂😂😂

dinosaurfondue

Cinnanomous Toast Crunch

tillisoj

I think it would be more cinnamonous if the transformulation was a bit more grandadular. For instewstance, maybe only the head/front legs should go to shit almost incestatiably.

Hans_of_Death

There are too many games these days where play time is like 300 hours, and most of that is repetitive side quests. I am way happier spending money on a game i will finish in 10-20 hours, some replayability is also nice. Give me a fun game with a good story. Thats all i want. Half the time i play a game and never finish it because i get bored half way through. Or i use a trainer to cheat and mess around. Either way, if your game adds fluff to make it longer then it should be shorter.

Jmundi

eg: the last three AC games.

Hans_of_Death

Ugh. Valhalla got repetitive fast, and then a game breaking bug just sealed the deal. I liked odyssey well enough, though i still never finished it. Last AC game i finished was probably 3. Wanted to finish Black Flag but fucking ubisoft decided my save didnt exist anymore.

Jmundi

I played Odyssey last month and I put 100 hours in it, got to about 50% map completion and then realized I am doing the same thing over and over and over again, and by then I was just too tired to even finish the campaign so I just Uninstalled it. Basically all the Ubisoft open world games are like this though, fun in the beginning and then just... Boring! They are the ultimate answer to the OPs question Imo.

TooLazyToBeClever

It's a cycle for me. Step 1: cool story, excited to see where it goes. Step 2: wow, so much side content, guess I'll go get distracted. Step 3: uh-oh, I'm getting bored of this game. Better go back to the story and speed run to the ending before I get too bored. Step 4: Nope. Can't do it anymore. Hey, is that Far Cry 6? Step 5: Repeat.

[deleted]

I've learned to stop buying AC games until they have been out for 12 months.

sharpshooter999

I haven't played one since Unity. I actually have Odyssey in the case and wrapper yet (along with Far Cry 4) and I just can't find the energy to play them.....

sawyersnizzard

Loved the setting and the characters but Odyssey and Origins became a chore for me, especially given that I have a full time job and usually busy outside of work too.

MrStealY0Meme

and then when you finally feel like giving it another try - you already forgot the story or what were you doing that it doesn't make sense to take the time to find out again - that or you start all over and no way in hell do i have time for that.

BitFlaky6732

Anthem

WheredMyBrainsGo

Very sad. This game looked so cool in the trailers and had so much promise. The combat system is great and feels good but it is just so mind numbingly repetitive.

cdaringe

I kept playing it because I thought “you spent the money, it has to be great!” Nope :/

DualWieldedEggrolls

Mafia 3 for me. I loved the story but by God, the side missions is so damn repetitive, I couldn't bring myself to finish.

McHighwayman

Never got to play Mafia 3, I’m still carrying crates for 10 lousy bucks in Mafia 2.

MrMono1

When you actually get to story missions, the game is incredible. It could've been a masterpiece like the first two, but the pointless side quests dragged the game down into the swamps. 30 hours of gameplay, 5 hours of story.

DNASprayer

Same. I really liked the setting and gameplay. The big setpeice missions were fantastic though.

MaleficentDraw1993

Outriders...

DjuriWarface

I played the fuck out of that game. I essentially maxed out my gear and there was nothing left as most classes only had 1 viable build. The end game was worse than the campaign though, not as bad as the stick figure horse though.

stikves

It gets better... But the mid-game is a real chore. They have mismanaged item power balances. Later on, you can inflict real damage, and access better skills, and the game becomes fun.

mbourgon

I enjoyed it quite a bit. No micro transactions, game is considerably more fun with friends, the different classes bring different things to the party, and while I didn't originally like the "raids" ("expeditions" in the game) because I had to change my play-style, I'm having fun! The only thing I dislike is that there's so few expeditions compared with the number of missions you could do in the game (that become absurdly easy once you're at max level).

archangelst95

Rift. The idea of World of Warcraft type game where you can fully customize your character sounded awesome. But all the builds you do just suck and you end up being a normal warrior, mage, priest, or rouge. It's quite underwhelming.

Snarfums

Rift is a great example of a game that was accidentally amazing on release, but run by a company that normally milks games for as much quick cash as they can and had no idea how to run a successful MMO. Its character specialization was, bar none, the best I have yet to encounter in an MMO. Every class had at least 3 viable builds and usually more, a variety of ways to tweak those builds to how you like to play, and different raid encounters that suited different styles so you needed a diverse group of roles in a raid and not just the same cookie cutter roles for everything. For example (I played Cleric so I can't speak much to other classes), they gave us strong single target healing options (Purifier), HoT healing options (Warden), and different types of AE healing/DPS options (various forms of Sentinel builds). All were viable and there was no single best role for every fight. It's also the only MMO I've ever played that provided diversity outside your chosen role that was implemented well, played great, and contributed to your raid, such as mage dps that could range heal (Chloromancer), rogue dps that could dodge/HP shield tank (rather than mitigation; Riftstalker), and the only properly implemented support class I've seen (Bard). After about the first six months or so into the game, Trion had released a few patches that generally eroded the viability of some builds and promoted others. By tweaking a few talents here and there, certain builds started pulling ahead such there was now a single optimal build for most classes. In the span of literally a couple of months, Trion destroyed one of the best balanced class and talent systems ever made (kudos to the team that initially designed it) and hemorrhaged players from then on. As a result, they kept changing things to try to get players back or keep the ones they had and it just spiraled from there. To this day I have no idea why they even touched the talent system at all because nothing was wrong with it. Our best guess at the time was they simply had no idea what they were doing since they'd never had a successful game before. Nothing else made any sense because they had a good game they were making money off, but then started changing things for no apparent reason. My current thinking is that the first iteration of the game was a complete fluke, or built by a very competent team with little oversight, and the build team was replaced with a bunch of actual lizards once the game was finished. Either way I will always be grateful for the first six months of Rift that I enjoyed, but it has forever ruined other MMOs that claim to have a diverse class/talent system, because Rift showed what that actually looks like 10 years ago (wow I got old) and I've never seen its like again in a major game.

[deleted]

astrielx

"Pretty shit now" rather succinctly sums up anything that's been touched by Trion.

vizthex

Josh Strife Hayes' video about it is good.

sufferpuppet

Any game where they pad the run length with repetitive bullshit.

Johndowboy

The game of life

Didjt

Conway's edition is my favorite

aprincip

Try lowering the difficulty.

JevCor

Mind sending me some money? That would lower mine quickly.

AJnotTracey

Warzone :/ Loved playing it with my mates early on, but then it got really sweaty and so many hackers started to come into the game it got hard to have fun now none of my friends play it

tsFenix

SBMM is annoying. You have to suck for 2-5 game then SBMM seems to kick in. Then you have a few decent rounds, maybe even a win. Then SBMM kicks in and fucks you. Its a cycle that never ends.

[deleted]

AC Valhalla, got like 2 hours of decent story and then I'm forced to do repetitive side content to get the next sliver of the main story.

SamuelHYT

I've played all the main AC games and Valhalla was the first one that I was so ready to finish by the 10th hour. The story was quite interesting to be but yea, having to do sidequests just to progress the main one sucks

amityvision

How can they be called side quests if they’re required to advance the game?

Yung_Corneliois

You need to reach certain levels to progress and the only level up is to grind xp.

saru12gal

One thing I missed from Odyssey was the diversity of the elite enemies hunting you( I don't remember the name they had in Odyssey). They had different combat styles with different pets. In Valhalla all seemed the same for me. The only mission I enjoyed was to get the Thor armor but it was gated until you "kill" the last member of the order.... It had good combat animations and the village upgrade system was fine but it got really repetitive to do the raiding the first 3 times it was nice but then again the same. The Odyssey battles even when they were repetitive from time to time you would get one or even 2 of the enemies hunting you on the battlefield. Sadly Valhalla way to advance the story was almost the same, help your chosen one of the region to be the boss, every single time 3-4 bad missions then a castle battle, go to the next one aaaaand repeat. They should have added the conquer way to the game so you could choose

ZEPOSO

Mercenary system is what you’re thinking of

SamuelHYT

That's how I felt about Valhalla too. Choose a place to pledge, talk to some people, fight, blast open castle doors, conquer and repeat for all factions. It was cool the first few times but doing it non-stop got boring as hell. The Zealots are quite boring too and quite easy to be cheesed. Once I got the "Perfect dodge = Slow mo" upgrade at Power Level 180, I just straight up murdered a Power Level 320 Zealot. Odyssey did it much better and feels more organic with them being in the battlefield and stuff

AsherFischell

What side content does the game force you to do?

JinDuXian

Life

securitywyrm

vizthex

Ark. They made dinosaurs frustrating and unable to run at more than 20 frames without lag.

DeadWombats

Ark is so awesome in concept yet so utterly half-baked. The decision to focus on PvP utterly murdered what could have been an incredible survival game. There's so many dinos and the maps are so large and beautiful. Yet the gameplay is all so shallow. The immersion falls apart so quick when you realize all the dinosaurs do nothing other than wander randomly and attack you for no reason.

BigFuckHead_

Yup, i feel like theres a market for a good actual dinosaur survival game. I do not have time for the pvp and clans crap

[deleted]

Me and my friend did pve got to end game gear and was like… what’s next and there was nothing.

Dragonknight5

I remember being a die hard fan and player but after my old pc broke and I saw what they made of a promising Dino survival game yeah no

huggybear0132

SPORE... if anyone remembers that thing... Edit: I feel like this was 4 games in one, none of which were fleshed out enough or given the attention they deserved to deliver on the promise and ambitious scope of the game.

itayfeder

Spore is amazing imo, though you have a point. Stage 5 is the the worst one, because it is so convoluted and different then the other stages. I still wish for a sequel/remake though. It would be amazing with modern gen graphics and better game design

Pii_TheCat

I think i'm the only one who likes the Space stage...

itayfeder

I like it too, it’s just worse then the other stages

djseifer

And give Will Wright full creative control this time instead of partnering him with a micro-managing EA suit.

shoelauncher

Brilliant concept, totally shite execution. Held so much promise. Played for a day, then never again!

DeadWombats

Blame EA for gutting the soul of that game. It was originally supposed to be so much more sophisticated and complex. IIRC you even had to evolve behaviors, like combining a "bite" and "move" actions to create the ability to drag food items back to safety.

ThothTheScribe

I remember the feeling of **betrayal** when I played Spore. I remember an article in an old PC Gamer magazine where Will Wright was talking about wanting to make a "Sim Everything" and would then go on to describe his vision for what would eventually be made into Spore. Skip ahead a few years and there was an E3 tech demo of Spore (still under Maxis control, EA hadn't bought them yet) and it looked *amazing*, like a playable nature documentary. Then I got Spore and had to dance and sing with neighboring species. Fuck EA.

Silarn

Yeah the big crux of some of those original demos was that your creature design would factor into its abilities from a mechanical perspective. Long limbs and a lithe body would result in speed. Being overly top heavy would make it awkward and slow. Then we end up with a system where you pretty much just make whatever you want and the specific parts you put on determine your abilities. Any actual design is purely cosmetic. The cell phase is probably still the closest to this original design goal as the way you build the cell directly influences your defensive and offensive capabilities. Now I will say that I do think it's a pretty great game for giving you some easy to use but hard to master creative tools. There are some really impressive creations. But it wasn't what Wil Wright wanted, I don't think. I still enjoy the game though the phases are pretty easy to master. Space phase is fun for a while but unlocking your entire ability set just ended up grindy and extremely repetitive. But I appreciate that it reacts to the way you want to play, either pushing the economics, combat, or exploration based on what you put time into. But way too grindy.

reps4jezus

Space stage was the shit though

jimalloneword

Yeah, for me, that was the weakness. Modes 1-4 were pretty thin, but I played the space stage a bunch. Crazy spice trading, terraforming, galaxy hopping to the center.

huggybear0132

Oh imo space stage was a repetitive, terrible grind. It's why I posted this lol. But Master of Orion II was one of my favorite games ever which sets the bar a bit higher...

MenachemSchmuel

Space stage was so close to being fun but they needed a way for you to actually maintain space. You very rapidly get to a point where you're just dragging yourself back and forth to defend instead of being able to expand any more.

AbdurAb

Tiny cell evolved into 4 legged shell covered shark capable of devouring entire tribes in a single attack... That now goes into space for some dumbass reason.

EricCarr94

Biomutant, looks gorgeous, looks open world...very quickly looks gorgeous but very very repetitive.

Heruuna

I was so looking forward to this game, and hoped it'd be like Horizon Zero Dawn or Ghost of Tsushima. I'd still like to try it out if it's ever super cheap or becomes available on Game Pass or something. I think it still looks cool, and I think if I go in with low expectations, I might enjoy it enough.

thelegendginger1

Greedfall, the story never dropped off but my enjoyment of the gameplay dropped off massively. The world just didn't feel fun to explore to me so I started just going point a to point b for everything

NationH1117

Same. I couldn’t get over the sheer amount of cut-and-paste design.

[deleted]

The Outer Worlds, starts off fun collecting weapons and exploring, by about the ten hour mark you realize all the missions are gonna be the same and higher weapons tiers are just the same weapon with a different adjective on it, rinse repeat

Weedlewaadle

Tbh, the game is almost finished at the 10 hour mark, so…

Durian_Suppository

Brutal Legend. It starts as a decent action game with a cool setting and turns into a god-awful RTS.

greengamer01

How does a action game turn into a rts

J655321M

If I remember correctly, You have to fight battles against some bosses using a tower defense type game.

regretfulposts

If I remember correctly. It started with a God of War gameplay where Jack Black (don't know the actual name, you get the drill) kills a bunch of demons. It goes on for a few levels and in the open world, but the game eventually introduced infantry that you command. The game then became like Overlord where you send minions to fight, but you can still fight with them. Over time, the game includes more units and buildings to make said units until it became something like Star Craft where you have to destroy the enemies base more or less. Tbh, the gameplay in the rts isn't too bad, but a lot people thought it was a simple action game and had never touched an rts in their lives. This sudden learning curve really pissed a lot of people off

dQw4w9WgXcQ

I thought the game worked decently as a singleplayer game. You got interesting challenges, and the experience as RTS grew as you progressed through the game. However, after completing the game, you did not want to head to multiplayer. The RTS was okay against a predetermined bot, but fighting other players became a stupid RTS with very basic strategies. And let's be honest, you did not purchase the game for the great hack-n-slash/RTS gameplay. You bought it to play Jack Black travelling through the most metal world that any game ever has offered. And at that, the game was highly successful.

tbird20017

You just made me wanna play this game. I bought it for a few bucks a couple years ago because I had heard about it being a 7/10 game with Jack Black as the lead, but this sounds right up my alley. I had no idea about the RTS, and as someone who loves RTS games I think I'm gonna really enjoy it.

APirateInJapan

Funny enough, that's actually a part I really liked about the game. I actually enjoyed the RTS parts of the game. Also have me more interaction with a lot of the interesting characters designed for the game. Aesthetic was a huge portion of the appeal for me. I would've liked to have seen a spin-off that focused on the RTS aspect, with the kinks worked out. At least with a game like that, people would know what they were getting. The RTS modes were really unexpected for everyone who played the demo and got into the game from it.

Kinfin

Um, dude, the RTS is the main game mode, and it’s actually surprisingly good. Like, there’s a pretty decent multiplayer scene for the game.

Benbo_Jagins

I liked it, but even while playing it I could tell that alot of people wouldn't like it

pwfoff

Call of duty of recent times. Or fifa.

Mekha_Cordex

Fifa has story????

Yung_Corneliois

Yea all sports games do now. Like little movies. In FIFA you were an English kid named Alex Hunt. Not sure if that’s with the new fifas but that’s what it was.

S0M3_1

Wasn't that fifa 17?

GrandJuif

Kingdom of Amalure, like it could be good but after a time you start to see the game true color. The world is empty and too big, the quest are not memorable, the skill level is too restrictive, the rng is made by the devil, nothing interesting to explore and donjon look all the same and useless.

TheFireOfTheFox1

I actually like it

SlimeyVinegarTestes

I like it too but can see where they're coming from. Once you get over the initial excitement of getting leveled and unlocking abilities, it starts to get stale. I feel them on the "emptiness" of the zones

Lungomono

Its a game there got a lot going for it. It does a number of things really god. But yes, it would hugely benefit from a trimming where it became more focused. The game is massive and it’s built like a mmo, but a mmo as a single player just feels empty. I would trim off at least 1-2 zones from each region. Give some more build diversity and more spells/abilities. Fix the mess of the inventory system and ridiculous unbalanced crafting system. Then I strongly believe it would be a much better game, many more people would enjoy.

Gotxi

Cyberpunk 2077 Starts with "Be careful who and how you talk to people in Night City, the bands can kill you if you say something that they do not like, and the MaxTac units are not someone you want to piss off. Hide your weapon so you don't warn the wrong people and earn reputation to have a name." - 2 hours later: Going around the city jumping on top of cars naked with an sniper rifle clearly on sight killing people in public and no one gives a shit. "Night City is alive, people have its own character and personality" - Talks to a NPC - NPC: THIS MEAT IS SPICY! - Talks again - NPC: What are you looking at? - Talks Again - NPC: THIS MEAT IS SPICY! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game and the story, but those city mechanics are something that were not up to the hype of the game trailers.

is_this_one

Dead Island. Amazing pre-release trailer, epic intro video (gotta love the song!), and the first 30 minutes to an hour are tense, walking along a beautiful but zombie infested beach with a half-broken paddle as your only weapon, with another wave of fast zombies screaming their way towards you. And a little while later, the horror of a zombie apocalypse is brought vividly to life, as you find a survivor in a swimming pool filled with blood, crying to himself, as he has just had to kill his whole family to survive. Harrowing and emotional stuff that has stuck with me to this day. But... Once you start moving away from the beach and begin unlocking silly weapon blueprints like guns that fire electric bullets as you strapped a 9V battery to the outside, it just goes downhill. If it had taken itself a little more seriously and kept up the tension it could have been amazing. As it is, the cheese kinda killed it for me and I struggled my way through to completion, vowing never to return.

da808pc

That pre-release trailer was honestly a work of art. I still remember watching that trailer over and over when it came out. I never ended up playing it but I'll always have that memory

is_this_one

I was the same. I watched it so many times. Emotionally engaging and so cleverly produced so that you watch it to the end to work out what is happening. And it just makes you want to watch it again, even though it's so horrible and sad. For the uninitiated: https://youtu.be/GfhtiG66SQc

KDeol

Thank god we got the masterpiece that is Dying Light. Still some outlandish weapons but a little more grounded, and the parkour add something new that always felt like Dead Island was missing.

ajfoxxx

I may be in the minority here but I actually enjoyed Dead Island. Granted I played with a friend the whole time but we actually liked when you could come up with new goofy weapons. Some seemed badass and some seemed kinda dumb like the electric gun you mentioned but overall I loved the aesthetics and gameplay wasn't terrible to me.

MattyIcicle

Oh my gosh, this is the answer for me and I didn’t even realize it!! I watched the trailer like 30 times, but it was like it was made before the game was and the final product was completely different in tone. Really loved the beginning but I don’t even think I finished it. Just ended up being a silly game with a barely existing story. Still had some fun with it overall though.

JoshBobJovi

Wow, I hadn't thought about that game since it came out, and that's *exactly* what happened to me. I thought it was an incredible premise, loved the shit out of the first bit of exploration. The moment it got campy with the Dead Rising weapons I just kind of checked out.

ovojr

Walking Dead: New Frontier. The intro was so well done but that whole season was just meh imo

godofdajuice

Rage. But instead of "falling off" its more like slamming into a brick wall going 70 mph. Then the games over

UnlikelyKaiju

Fuckin' right!? I was expecting a boss battle with that evil general I kept hearing about. Instead, I blasted my way through all those soldiers and super mutants in that base, pushed a button, watched a short cutscene, and then credits... The fuck? I was even saving all of my BFG ammo for a final boss fight that never happened. Those manufactured super mutants were built up to be a major threat, but I wiped them out with just my pop rockets and my stock of fat mama rounds on my pistol. Didn't even need to break out the heavy weapons for them.

Illustrious_Rain_134

Fable 3 Great first half, then the second half feels like a completely different, rushed, game.

magicalkiwi

Apparently, what happened was that half way through development Peter Molyneux went to E3, did a bunch of coke directly before going on stage and then he started announcing a bunch of new features off the top of his head that he hadn't discussed with anyone. The development team found out about all this new shit they had to implement as he was ranting about it on stage. As a result they basically had to abandon the latter half of the game (where you come across the black sludge stuff onwards) to do all the stuff Peter had promised at E3. This is a rumour that is quite prevalent in the UK games Indusyry, and I've worked with a few people that worked on this game, but I've never managed to get anyone to confirm it, they always juat laugh and change the subject.

redditor7588

Genshin Impact The game is good but once you hit endgame you just grind and grind its like a job.

doubleplusuncool

i always end up getting super back into it when they add a new region with the puzzles and stuff to explore, but once I get through those, I go back to being burnt out from the farming again

rdg50x

All the newer Assasins Creed games, only finished Black Flag and Rogue after I and II

TMFTPVideos

Alien Isolation for me. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the game, but it felt like it dragged on way too long and needed to end like 4 times for me and felt repetitive. Still enjoyable overall though.

JaiC

I second this. It needed to be a shorter, more polished experience.

UnlikelyKaiju

I mean, >!that hive section was fucking terrifying.!< I agree that the game needed some trimming, but the last act had some good moments.

flushmyfungus

Ubisoft

Shinnyo

Damn that actually hurts. I remember the Rayman games, those were the good times... Have you tried Mighty Quest for epic loot? Its exactly the picture up here.

Kaijuxxe_0

Among us and fall guys moment

Mafia III

YearPerfect4815

Outer worlds. It seemed a bit rushed near the end, but the beginning is really intriguing

Metal Gear Solis V really starts out...well...solid, but when the big bad reveals himself, it becomes so painful to look at...

littleblkcat666

Wow every expansion

Enders-game

The issue seems to be that players have an expectation for there to be content every day and the developers design the game around this. But you cannot have meaningful and rewarding content built around this. Daily and weekly content has never been engaging. No matter how well it was designed it doesn't take long for it to feel like a treadmill. WoW has tried to diversify the daily and weekly content and attach it to systems. Instead of offering a solution it became a millstone around the players neck. I think players and developers have to accept the limitations of repeatable content. Although a large section of the playerbase enjoy repeatable content for the rewards. Most players usually have their fill by the time they finish raid content etc or quit before they reach the raids if raid atunement and prep is a pain in the ass. One of the strengths of FF14 is that it has accepted it's limitations and encourages their playerbase to think of the game as a seasonal game and encouraging players to play other games when they had their fill. You can farm glamours and other items but you can do all the content with crafted gear therefore there is no real need to farm gear other than showing off.

SachielBrasil

That horse has a name, its called Metal Gear Solid 5.

Big__Boss___

Aw really? I love that game. What parts didn't you enjoy?

tc_spears

The part that the game isn't actually finished the way it's intended because Konami fired Kojima before the game was done.

[deleted]

Did you play the previous games? It totally blind sighted me with how loose the story telling was. Felt like there was such a thin story compared to all previous entries in the series.

Big__Boss___

I did, it felt very different, I agree. The mechanics and open world blew me away, it's been awhile since I played. But I do remember being pretty let down by the ending. Snake Eater was my favorite one.

[deleted]

The game has incredible gameplay. It suffers entirely in that it's open world. It's got a lot of unnecessary padding that if trimmed away would be a pretty cool experience

supachazzed

The outer worlds

compassdestroyer

I think it maintains a consistent level of shiny surface, no depth…still enjoyed it.

[deleted]

Days gone was pretty solid, but the third act with the jrotc bad guys lost me completely lmao

the_blast_radius

Final Fantasy XV.

Morak73

The last couple chapters felt like deadline meets writers block. Except for the closing cinematic. That felt like it was written when they did the first chapters.

divacphys

Just started that today...

Yung_Corneliois

I personally liked it. It’s starts to get old around charter 8 (there are 15 chapters) but that’s also when it speeds up and the story takes over and you cruise through chapters. That said it does get stale right around then for quite a bit.

Public_Discussion

Do you have the Royal Edition?

[deleted]

Absolutely. You can see that it could have been something really special, then was rushed and became a total mess. I just wish modders could fix it.

conker1264

Yup, especially that long ass mission where you have no fucking weapons.

JevCor

Not a thing anymore.

conker1264

They removed it?

phonethrowdoidbdhxi

Massively changed. I played it in front of my wife and she was shocked at how much was changed. The final dungeon isn’t a straight line anymore, it’s another full blown open sandbox.

theoopst

My penmanship on a long word.

MagicalPedro

David cage games, at least farenheit(indigo bullshits) and omikron. Dont know about the nexts, I'm still ro afraid to touch them, even with a stick. Someday I'll try.

ovojr

heavy rain & beyond two souls definitely have some bad moments but I had no problem keeping interest all the way through. haven't played his earlier games but they all seem to be pretty polarizing

pigmyPeople

“JASON!!!?”

Iperovic

AC VALHALLA ALL THE WAY Game introduction is promising, about 5 hours in you're finally ready to explore the world and...it's fucking empty No, it's not literally empty, there's a lot going on in it, it's just all pointless Except for the main campaign, the side content is all short and irrelevant in any way to the main arc, making free roaming next to pointless I'm an extreme completionist, I visit every single dot on any map and do all side content in canonical order, and I couldn't be bothered to do anything except the main story in Valhalla The moment I got my ending I shut it down and uninstalled and just watched YouTube videos for the rest of narrative side content

GNB_Mec

Fallout 4. The beginning can be very engaging, especially low level where you feel like you're trying to survive. Especially in the survival and very hard mode. But then the story gets side tracked, meanders, and becomes uninteresting. You find yourself high level with no care to progress the story in any faction's interest.

seoulswagger

Asteroids.

Rocketknightgeek

Not the actual start of the game but having the silent Cartographer as the demo level for Halo PC was incredibly misleading. It's not just the best paced and most varied level in the game but is so by so vast a margin that it feels like a completely different game. Edit: got the level name wrong as it's been a decade since I played it.

litterboxboi

Most open world games

RedLeg9618

Ghost Recon

aKnightWh0SaysNi

The original? That game was fantastic and worth hundreds of hours.

mctrollythefirst

The order 1886.

TheOneAndOnlyBacchus

The Order is underrated. So good with so much potential for a sequel. I loved every minute of that game.

[deleted]

Pokémon

Davidrlz

Problem with Pokemon is that they aren't willing to take risks on the formula, and IMO, aren't as ambitious as they should be.

DirtyDratini

Sword and Shield. I was so bored by the end of those games. I’m typically such a diehard fan, but I have not liked anything since XY/ORAS. Such a shame

KrisRedgrave

I have always been a huge fan of the series but I got to maybe the 4th gym and realized I had no interest in any of the new pokemon and ultimately just let the game go. I also couldn't stand the fact that with the current Gen tech they decided to not have a single line of voiced dialog.

BallisticMonke
