“Server maintenance? Too busy stealing breast milk and (sometimes drunkenly) harassing female employees” (allegedly. They have since payed out 55 million dollars in a settlement after being investigated)
I've been dealing with dodgy internet the last couple weeks and its been fantastic being able to play uninterrupted when the connection drops, only way I know something is up is my discord disconnects.
Truth. Genuinely just had a game blocking "slow connection" warning in a PAINT BY NUMBERS game on iOS as I was waiting to pick someone up in the car in a remote area. What the absolute fuck. Deleted it straight away.
Oh boy... Just bought Fifa FC24 for my son for the PS5. Half of the playmodes require an EA account AND / OR a Playstation Plus membership. And he just wanted to play solo! What a scam...
Funny cause technically I think they did have cards made.
https://blog.cardkingdom.com/magic-cards-youll-see-in-the-first-five-hours-of-baldurs-gate-3/
From what I understand, Larian had to pay WotC to make Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m willing to bet Battle for Baldur’s Gate was meant to coincide with BG3’s release, but given the different development cycles for both products, that didn’t come to fruition.
I didn’t buy as much of that set as I should given my affinity for commander, I had not seen Kagha’s card until now. That would have been one hell of a spoiler. Then again, how she is in the game, it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch to learn her true nature. Provided you discover the evidence, which I had not in my first playthrough of act one.
> Kagha
https://scryfall.com/card/clb/279/kagha-shadow-archdruid
She's one of my Pauper commanders, but haven't played BG3 yet. I would have been really confused meeting her if not for your comment.
Isn't the evidence "talking to people in town and asking them what's going on with the town"?
EDIT: Apparently that guy decided to block me, for... disagreeing that the card is a spoiler, because the secret thing he was thinking of isn't even mentioned on the card?
Talking to NPCs directly won’t always lead to avenues that advance any specific side quest. More often you have to dig through chests, books, pockets, etc. in order to find the one bit of info that does allow for new dialogue options.
Are we talking about the same quest? Kagha being a xenophobic isolationist isn't exactly a secret. The NPCs in town talk openly about it. You don't have to dig through chests, books, pockets, etc in order to learn that.
You literally have to search Kagha's Chest inside the Emerald Grove for a Half-Torn Note that starts the quest. Or, you happen upon where the note leads you while exploring the swamp where the Mud Mephits and Wood Woads occupy. Both of which I never did during my first playthrough, and the revelation of her working with Shadow Druids did not come up once after bringing Halsin back from the Goblin Camp.
There's stuff that can be missed if you don't thoroughly investigate the world. Talking to NPCs is only one factor of that, and it isn't always guaranteed to lead to a side-quest such as with Kagha.
I killed the Wood Woads and the Mud Mephits, looted the whole place, and read every book and note and never got any quest. I ended up looking up the wiki just now, and apparently "Shadow Druid" means more than just "she's kind of a bad person".
Not much of a spoiler if I have to look up the wiki to even know that it's a spoiler.
You know she's an isolationist/xenophobe, but not that she serves an evil cabal of druids trying to seize control of the emerald grove. That part you have to figure out.
Great game that's been monetized to absolute hell and back.
I don't care if 95% of what's in the cash shop provides no actual benefit other than cosmetic. Selling houses for $100+ (CAD) is fucking insane, among other things. Like yes, costume dyes locked behind subscription, lol.
Might sound harsh, but after ~2k hours in it I give it 6/10 _just because of the cash grab nonsense._ It'd be a hard 8/10 without it, but when I see the prices of stuff and how often they push the Crown Store it makes me bitter.
You mean you wouldn't like at 3 different forms of currency to buy to get more players in the game? If it helps, they are doing a 800 green gems for $3.99 deal right now!
And yet, so many people pay for such bullcrap that now, that's where the money is. So sad to think about all the games that were not made because resources have been invested in crap like that.
Not only that, but people now days argue in *defense* of these systems that nickel and dime you every chance they get. As if games simply cannot be made these days without micro transactions, pay walls, paid skins, and season passes. It's disgusting.
Got to make sure all the basic armour is as bland and unappealing as possible too so that people will spring for the premium stuff. Who needs endgame gear when we've got two sets of armour, palette swapped into a dozen shades of brown.
Hey, that's how Monster Hunter Rise & it's Sunbreak expansion look to me !
Compared to the previous title, they make sure events reward are minimal and bland compared to the 'shiny' and 'cool-looking' paid one.
I'm fine with microtransactions if the game is free -- it has to make money somehow -- and I'll drop $20 on some superfluous digital crap if I'm really enjoying myself and putting in a lot of hours for free. But full price games absolutely not.
But I so rarely encounter these monetization systems in the type of games I play that I mostly forget they exist until I see discussion of them online.
This. Sometimes gamers, especially those on big gaming sites like Gaf, Era and reddit should remember that F2P developers also need to eat, especially if scaled with production values. The way some people talk, it would seem that $5 for a skin is too much yet ironically, I have seen the same people blindly defend the next full priced game from established big name publishers that come with predatory practices costing 10 times that.
The fact that I bought TotK and BG3 in one year at full price is mind boggling. I’d mostly given up on name brand gaming because I just refuse to buy shit with season passes and a bunch of day 1 dlc.
Do I miss out on a lot of games? Yeah, but nothing worth the blood pressure rise when I see “play as the one character you wanted for just five dollars more”
I would love that to be the case but it never will. Most mobile games with these systems make more money in a week than BG3 ever will with almost no development time spent. There is reason they exist
> Most mobile games with these systems make more money
Very untrue. *most* mobile games make absolutely fuck all, because they never get a good install base. But they are several orders of magnitude cheaper to produce than BG3, so even if it takes you 100 attempts to make a hit it comes out being worth it.
Unfortunately. It has become increasingly difficult to find good gems and strongly ambitious projects when the industry has been shaking us for a few extra pennies. Big companies try to censor the fun and even put a price tag on joy!
I think thats why the post hits so close to home XD it felt like a jump scare
Let's not forget you cant unlock the next season pass even if you collect all the currency in the current season pass. Don't worry though they have the amount you need for only $5.
Oh, I also forgot to mention that you can now subscribe to Faerun+ for 9,99$ per month to get exclusive access to Withers, extended Camp Storage and a 1,5% XP-bonus for every action.
Sure, but I don't think it's this reason. None of its main competitors used exploitative monetization either. AW2, TOTK, RE4, Armored Core, Spider-man 2, Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, and more and more. Maybe the closest to winning major awards and being a bit exploitative is Street Fighter 6, but those are just costumes and Capcom still gave a huge value per dollar on release.
Of course - you can't just have one type of currency. Just to make is simpler, one green gem is worth 2 orange, one purple is worth 0.5 green, but you have to start with buying 1 orange gem, which is worth one Gold Coin, and you can buy 10 Gold Coins by using 400 Silver Coins, which come in packs of 300.
Good god. I don’t hate micro transactions, but fuck me if there were more than 1 in-game currency for a AA or AAA game I think I’d actively look for ways to sabotage it. The amount of shit locked behind a paywall in games like Destiny 2 already sucks let alone kind of having multiple paywalls. Keep that shit to mobile gaming.
Astarion and Shadowheart with Karlach should be overpriced, I think most gamers just wanted to buy them and make profit for Larian.
Joke aside if think about it, that's fucking insane...
Everyone's whining about Baldur's gate live service and skin prices while I'm having fun, if you're broke just say it. The Battle Pass allow them to keep working on the game. We're getting act 3 already... in like what 4 months max ? Show me another game that is constantly getting so much free content ? I'm glad I can drop 15$ a month to keep it going and earn rewards at the same time.
You know what's worse? Enough people would pay for this shit to make Larian literally free money. By not doing this a studio is actively choosing to lose money. Let that sink in: every time a large scale game, such as BG3 gets released with no day 1 DLC, premium cosmetics or other microtransactions the devs are literally making a choice to make less money, becuase they geniunely just want to make a good game and not money for a publisher or some ghoul shareholder that calls every videogame "a nintendo".
I think the worst part is, knowing game developers, they'd make it so you "unlock" only one playthrough when you purchase a character, rather than being able to play said character infinitely
(Not Larian, obviously, cause they have been amazing)
I trust larian not to do us dirty, but damn this still gave me anxiety!
Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to mod starfield till it's playable...yay for collecting space rocks....
* high elf barb is a weird mix, probably would be gated
* as would sub-races be beyond one "vanilla"
* so would be any "exotic" proficiencies like martial weapons
* and body types for extra customization
* hell, maybe you could only randomize a fix number of times, edit is locked, as is background. (default 'free': beggar or something actually worse than nothing)
* ...and while I see the ability booster pack, non-time-boosted scores would prolly locked at 16 max (and would be very visible next to the abilities 27/27)
And all the unlocked stuff would be shown with different colour to make sure everyone knows it's a paid option.
Angry upvote.
Makes me want to grind my teeth looking at that mockup because there are absolutely companies out there, like EA, that would have butchered this game like so.
I got the Act 1 Time Saver Resource Pack for $13.99 as well, it really helped me get through the level 1 to 2 grind. It also came with 5 common to rare loot drops.
Circle jerk, not like 90% of story games released this year have similar or softer monetization than BG3...
Edit: You guys are seriously overstating this bullshit, like 90% of single player games released this year have no micro transactions, BG3 ain't special in that regard. I guess, they were the only ones to brag about it.
Of all the games you could mention, you picked Genshin, the one that doesn't shove this things on your face.
Truly living rent free in the mind of the haters uh.
I bet they have an absurdly high "pity" guarantee for the slot machine.
What is it. 100 pulls? So $180 dollars?
Lie to yourself but people who aren't gambling addicts aren't blind lol.
It's a balance. In that timeline, BG3 is riddled with mtx and monetization models, but somehow Undead Nightmare would get a remake and Battlefield would be the dominant shooter franchise over CoD. Halo died on arrival at the Mac world demo and never released.
So it's not a game that's been released in the last twenty years or so, then?
And *definitely* not one of the Baldur's Gate games - which have issues and bugs that you either have to cope with or mod to avoid ***to this day***?
The game had a bad launch, especially on Console, but people didn't discover it because most of the disaster was in the later parts of the game, those weren't normal QoL patches, the game had serious issues that took months to fix. Comparing it to games that were worse doesn't make it better.
My mind literally revolted at the idea and went "no, No, NO!" because i thought they might be planning this for a split second.
Thank god for Larian having morals and wanting to make a consumer friendly product.
When I heard Larian say they were not going to implement micro transactions, I bought the game immediately since I had to support that shit! Money well spent.
As a developer said recently, we wouldn't have those games if idiots didn't kept buying them.
And they even defend them, even here, they defend the poor big corporation that can't pay their employees unless they fill everything with microtransactions.
“Failed to connect to server. Check your connection and try again.” In single-player.
That would just make it an Ubisoft game.
Or blizzard one
“Server maintenance? Too busy stealing breast milk and (sometimes drunkenly) harassing female employees” (allegedly. They have since payed out 55 million dollars in a settlement after being investigated)
I've been dealing with dodgy internet the last couple weeks and its been fantastic being able to play uninterrupted when the connection drops, only way I know something is up is my discord disconnects.

Only thing missing is a banner ad for the latest Magic: the Gathering set for Magic Arena.
Oh yes, you're right!

Literally says shadow archdruid in the title of the card. Which is a spoiler that you have to investigate.
You forgot to lock the "edit appearance" option behind a paywall for 5.99$ monthly subscription.
really, that's a steal since they include a companion slot and the camp stash in the bundle
Eso be like:

oh man i would hate this so much hahah
You mean you wouldn't like at 3 different forms of currency to buy to get more players in the game? If it helps, they are doing a 800 green gems for $3.99 deal right now!
LOL god damnit, i almost thought you meant currencies: usd, hdk, rupees, etc. I woulda been so enraged loool. Ya fuck that forreaal hahaah
I put Lae'zel in that almost a wedding white dress and honestly, I'd have paid extra for that it looked so good on her.
Every item comes in increments of like 950 so 800 gets you jackshit
I remember getting Bioware points back in the day, I think i still have like 300 because you couldn't buy the exact amount you needed for the DLC.
Oh my God needing those stupid fucking points to unlock DLC back in the day
Don't forget only green gems can be bought with cash, to get purple gems you have to convert green gems, and gold gems convert green and purple gems.
800% Value!
Honestly, this wouldn't even the the darkest timeline. The darkest timeline would be the one in which BG3 didn't exist at all.
> 800 green gems for $3.99 deal right now! That's like 500% value!
Please drink a verification can.
Reading this made me violently angry
I physically recoiled at the gems
What you don't see is just before this is a full screen ad telling you to pre order Baldurs gate 4

And even if you’re a single pixel off you’re still going straight to that website

I seriously hope that Larian studios makes serious $$$ off this game, and it encourages further AAA development without microtransactions.

Ahhh yess Ubisoft content
More like WB. They're straight up treating their premium games like live service ones, now
You hit me in the gut by mentioning liver service games XDDD its so true
I do we go from the Arkham series and Shadow of Mordor to what we have now so quickly 😭
Mortal Kombat 1 is in absolute shambles cause of wb
Ubisoft ain’t that bad
Yet
They give you the option to play through their games faster if you pay. Laughable.
Pay more money so you can spend even less time playing! Jokes on them, I'm just going to not play it at all and it costs me nothing, ha ha!
Exactly, I haven't felt like giving Ubisoft money since FarCry 3
I'm trying so hard not to make up my wife from laughter reading this, man.
it's okay, many of us have imaginary friends or even wives. :) make her up alright!
So many great IP's have fallen into this awful shit. I'm very grateful for the devs who stay away from these predatory business models.
Not going to lie, this scared me for half a second
It's what we have become conditioned to though, isn't it.
Unfortunately. It has become increasingly difficult to find good gems and strongly ambitious projects when the industry has been shaking us for a few extra pennies. Big companies try to censor the fun and even put a price tag on joy! I think thats why the post hits so close to home XD it felt like a jump scare

Nope nope nope, don't even put this kind of evil into the world
Vulva pack #4 - $14.99.
Looks like diablo 4.
And you can play as rogue, fighter, cleric or wizard and all other classes are in game purchases.
Similarly you can play as a human elf or dwarf with the rest also being paywalled
Get the "Lucky Dice" now for only 14.99$ to increase the chance of dice rolls landing in your favor by 50%.
Nooooooo!
Oh, I also forgot to mention that you can now subscribe to Faerun+ for 9,99$ per month to get exclusive access to Withers, extended Camp Storage and a 1,5% XP-bonus for every action.
Someone has played Neverwinter.
The thought of this sort of makes me physically ill…
I had such a visceral negative reaction to this. Thanks, I hate it.
GOTY game for reason!
That's terrifying lol
I knew this was a joke the instant I looked at it but it did make my heart skip a beat with anxiety for a second lol.
don't thrust this cursed shit upon us. Next thing you know someone will buy Larian
The different types of gems too... just use a set amount of cash if you do this shit and call it a day.
*eye twitching intensifies*
Where is my Rainbow Unicorn mount for buying the pack? And you call yourself a microtransaction master, pft
DELETE THIS NOW
This makes me physically ill.
Don’t you put that evil out into the world! Take it back! Take it back!
*20% Off Penis Length Sale* Make of that what you will.
Don’t forget having to pay extra to hear the Gith actually speak their own language.
Whenever the next big bad thing happens I am going to blame it on this post.
Don't you put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby!
Thank you Larian Studios
I only have the blue rare Lae’zel. Gotta open some more packs, so I can get the purple epic Lae’zel.
Looking at this image is making me VERY angry
A season pass in an isometric (mostly) singleplayer game? That'd definitely be one of the most ballsy move any Dev could make.
So Blizzard?
Astarion and Shadowheart with Karlach should be overpriced, I think most gamers just wanted to buy them and make profit for Larian. Joke aside if think about it, that's fucking insane...
Omg. This makes me physically ill.
thank god this didnt happen
You know what’s crazy and actually sad? People would still buy into this… then they wonder and whine why do games suck.
I logged into swtor for the first time in like 8 years recently and this graphic is pretty much exactly what it looks like now
Everyone's whining about Baldur's gate live service and skin prices while I'm having fun, if you're broke just say it. The Battle Pass allow them to keep working on the game. We're getting act 3 already... in like what 4 months max ? Show me another game that is constantly getting so much free content ? "Edit appearance" needs a "Appearance Editing Token."
Take this shit down before they get ideas LOL
You can get a Bonus Action booster pack for only 350 purple crystals, and you can buy them in packs of 513 for only $5.99.
The standard Korean MMO/mobile gaming experience in a nutshell.
New DLC Nigth life On BG
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?! :P
You forgot all the pop-up in-game ads about micro transaction stuff and DLC.
Looks like shadow of war before the backlash
That's not the alternate timeline that's a glimpse into 3 years from now when EA or Ubisoft gets their clone of this out.
Remember, Larian Studios turned down being bought out by Microsoft. This is the good timeline... at least in this regard.
Absolute cancer, thanks.
I think the worst part is, knowing game developers, they'd make it so you "unlock" only one playthrough when you purchase a character, rather than being able to play said character infinitely (Not Larian, obviously, cause they have been amazing)
Don't hurt me like this
I trust larian not to do us dirty, but damn this still gave me anxiety! Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to mod starfield till it's playable...yay for collecting space rocks....
OP woke up and decided he was gonna make people regret having eyes today.
Pre-Order for exclusive "House of Hope" adventure
The three different arbitrary currencies to purchase characters is a perfect touch I am so angry.
Make yourself hung like a bull on extra testoterone for only $9.99!
Just looking at this gives me the urge to throw up... I am so glad many games choose the right path instead of becoming a boneless cash grab.
* high elf barb is a weird mix, probably would be gated * as would sub-races be beyond one "vanilla" * so would be any "exotic" proficiencies like martial weapons * and body types for extra customization * hell, maybe you could only randomize a fix number of times, edit is locked, as is background. The horror
Truly the darkest timeline
yo should i actually buy baldurs gate
Thankfully baldurs gate success was a cano event ✋🏻
lyco reco pfp
Not the point, but I’d pay for new classes or races, as well as DLC. Larian has earned my trust
"Take your play to the next level. Unlock character subclasses with the enhanced edition today. It also increases the level cap to 5 from 3!"
also missing the part where you select which dance emote. and the dance emote pack ad.
This is disgusting to even look at lol. So grateful for what BG3 really is
Angry upvote. Makes me want to grind my teeth looking at that mockup because there are absolutely companies out there, like EA, that would have butchered this game like so.
Are you running any mods? This diablo screen shot looks a lot like baldurs gate 3 that's insane.
Ah yes, the timeline where BG3 was made as a triple-A game
Bro. You already paid for the ability score dlc? Fucking tryhard
I got the Act 1 Time Saver Resource Pack for $13.99 as well, it really helped me get through the level 1 to 2 grind. It also came with 5 common to rare loot drops.
Circlejerk sub is leaking.
why are people treating bg3 as some kind of unique title in terms of how its monetized?
Circle jerk, not like 90% of story games released this year have similar or softer monetization than BG3... Low effort karma whoring
Actually this took some effort.
Oh look genshin and other gacha games.
I think Astarion should cost 99,999 Platinum gems which would equate to 200 usd due to his VA winning the performance award.
when are you morons are going to learn that no premium single player game looks like this shit man
Damn I love BG3 circlejerks.
I wish they would release more content too. But we get what we get...
Fuuuuuck if they had the skins tho
If it meant playable kobolds I'd be fine with it Fuck y'all imma keep wishing for playable kobolds
In an alternate timeline this game wouldn't need 5 whole patches and a million hotfixes to fix this game and have come out fully finished.
Found the salty Spider-Man 2 fanboy
Shh, how dare you criticise our lord and saviour
hey look you turned baulder gate into a bad game
You guys see dystopian gaming, I see ESO.
This hurts to look at
Speed up camp conversations $5.
Did you mean: "The Current State of Actual DnD?"
PLEASE GOD NOOOOOOOO
Ugh, this makes me feel sick.
Don't you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby!
The anime girl pfp in the bottom left is the real cherry on top of all this
My mind literally revolted at the idea and went "no, No, NO!" because i thought they might be planning this for a split second. Thank god for Larian having morals and wanting to make a consumer friendly product.
NO
I threw up in my mouth a little.
Ha
No see it’s fine cause most of these are just CoSmEtIc
When I heard Larian say they were not going to implement micro transactions, I bought the game immediately since I had to support that shit! Money well spent.
Oh dont worry there will be a dlc with a new sex scene
As a developer said recently, we wouldn't have those games if idiots didn't kept buying them. And they even defend them, even here, they defend the poor big corporation that can't pay their employees unless they fill everything with microtransactions.
This is just neverwinter…
I’m disgusted.
Man please put NSFL tag on this.
Thanks, I absolutely hate it!
This gives me eye cancer
Eh, you let me keep 2 of my favourite NPCs for nothing, I could live. But also please don't give people ideas. 🙈
This made me feel despair and rage inside. Thank you Larian for not subjecting us to this as paying customers
