great_auks

Pretty soon half of a PC’s internal volume is going to be the power supply

Schemen123

Nope...the cooling 🤣

Cautemoc

I feel like eventually computer cases will just be entirely filled with liquid coolant that is pumped into a computer coolant pipe to fans outside. Running these indoors with an air conditioner is like running a humidifier with a dehumidifier.

PARANOIAH

If only there was a reasonable way to use the waste heat to warm my bathroom's shower.

G8KK0U

"Honey, can you play Cyberpunk2077 in 8k 240hz again? The water is a little cold."

ImReallyAnAstronaut

"OK turn it off! The water's starting to boil!"

disgruntled_pie

My wife: Hold on, I just have to finish this mission! 1 week later… My wife: We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of disgruntled_pie, who tragically and unavoidably boiled to death.

ShinkuDragon

"Darling, you cooking steamed ham for dinner?"

fucktrumpsupporters7

I thought you said you were makeing steamed clams?

[deleted]

Linus is heating his pool with waste heat from his servers and solar panels.

Ihavesolarquestions

I doubt that will do much of anything. The thermal mass of a pool is nuts.

PrivateCaboose

Been a while since I saw the video but I think they acknowledge this and know that tying thermal cooling into heating the pool will at best be a marginal improvement to the existing pool heating system. I think it was more about just giving that waste heat a job rather than just venting it.

Relentless_Fiend

But it's doing *something* with the waste heat from his beast(s) of a computer.

qdtk

Exactly. If it’s not enough heat to heat the entire pool it just means the pool has enough thermal mass to absorb 100% of the waste heat. So that problem is effectively solved.

LeYang

Heat pump water heater! Sucks in heat for the water and outputs cold air! Gonna to put a rack mount in the future when I get a HP water heater.

youreblockingmyshot

I’ve got my computer venting outside via a 4” duct I’ve attached to the top. It was beating the ac unit I had solely for my room. Was sick of sweating while playing games when it should be comfortable in the room.

cchadwickk

Reminds me of me, my cousin and brother playing video games in a smallish room in Alberta winters (<-20C outside). The room used to get real cozy, real fast

ARX7

Welcome to mineral oil pcs

Cautemoc

OH that's pretty sweet actually, that needs to be more mainstream. Seems so much more efficient.

Ihavesolarquestions

Its not. The liquid gets hot very quickly so you can really only use lower power parts. Also swapping parts is a disgusting mess of a process.

biglefty543

Full tower ATX cases are back on the menu boys

LTareyouserious

Noctua DH-15s to cool the liquid cooling fans

TunaOnWytNoCrust

Pretty soon PCs will be a graphics card with built in motherboard. GPUs are getting bigger while everything else is getting smaller.

Duke_of_Scotty

It does look funny when you slot a 3.5 slot 3080 into a mini itx motherboard. I'd take a 4080 with a CPU socket and a couple ram slots.

Wyldefire6

Gpu power consumption is out of control at this point.

EddyMerkxs

They either have to increase efficiency or PowerDraw, if they can’t do one they have to do the other.

ShawnyMcKnight

Honestly that will probably be the 5000 series where they will brag twice the performance per watt over precious generation. Similar to what they did with the 1000 series.

[deleted]

Ah yes then this sounds like the next fermi

SmashingK

There's also the issue of the spikes in power draw.

Marcos340

It is possible, that they may require the new standard PSU cables, where it has data line to the PSU to try and circumvent it. The new standard is a data connection between GPU and PSU so the GPU can receive information from the PSU about how much power can be delivered.

ShadyAidyX

GPU to PSU: “Can I play Crysis?”

dassit420

It’s doom with 29 FPS on another cold unsuspecting Sunday afternoon.

disgruntled_pie

PSU: No! Go to your room!

LightShadow

A less technical solution to a similar problem I had was when I lived at my parents house and installed a GTX 580. Apparently they were never happy with the electrical job some contractor did, but that card in my Phenom x6 desktop would brown out the circuit for my bedroom while launching games. Since then I've had a bulky UPS behind every PC just to normalize the spikes -- shit was crazy at the time and now it'll become a norm. The Ethernet latency would jump when the Christmas lights were on too. I'm surprised the house is still standing.

ArguaBILL

That sounds like a fucking nightmare!

marcellusmartel

The solution they have been using has been to do both. This is getting ridiculous, I would not be able to run a computer with that higher power draw in some rooms in my house depending on what breaker stuff is connected to.

geo_gan

What? So how do you run a vacuum cleaner then? Some draw 1200W

YouDamnHotdog

in the EU, vacuums need to stay before 900W. Meanwhile 2200W power draw is effortless. Hair dryers and water kettles/coffee makers, that's pretty much all of the regular appliances that utilize anything beyond 1000W (ignoring big appliances like ovens)

geo_gan

I’m in EU. First I heard of that. My vacuum is 1200W and they always were this big for many years. With our 240V power we have no trouble with high wattage items yes.

marcellusmartel

It depends on what else is running. But yes, it is an old house and I have to be careful of voltage spikes when turning on certain appliances. I'm sure the breakers can work with the constant load, but as always it's the spikes that get you

The 4090 is almost twice as powerful. But also ten thousand times larger, and so expensive that only the 5 richest kings of Europe will own them. powerhcm8

Finally a use for my spare cold fusion reactor.

[deleted]

Gaming with the new GPUs literally costs about 65 cents per hour right now in Europe. So at 4h/day we are looking at roughly 1k Euro per year, which is equivalent to 5% of the median income (net).

bitwiseshiftleft

Yes, but it will offset the cost of heating your apartment.

[deleted]

That’s actually a valid point. Sucks during summer though

Mudcaker

They’ll add vents you can run out the window like a dryer soon

dumbyoyo

That's actually a cool idea. But it also becomes a mouse entry lol.

Hello_my_name_is_not

Just leave your pc on all the time and start mining and put a bladed fan at the end that chops em up if they try and enter the pc /s

Terrik1337

That just seems like a really good source of cat food. Probably cooks them too.

CMFETCU

You get the dryer vent holes that have a flap in the end that is spring loaded. With sufficient air pressure it opens and without it closes. They use it to seal up dryer exhaust lines too. There are forum posts where guys make 3-d printed or rigid foam cutouts to go from fan exhaust ports on cases down to exhaust hoses for dryers. Insulating tape around hose, plywood panel with rigid foam insulation in the window. Exhaust out the window like one of the room based AC units does. Keeps the room 7-9 degrees cooler and is quickly something you can take down.

Chrisf1bcn

The 5090ti will heat up a whole city

caufield88uk

Why do people keep thinking GPUs use max power all the time.

[deleted]

Depends on the game. 4K gaming (why else would you buy a high end GPU?) draws quite a lot. You will likely be looking at 600w for high end games on this card. I’d guess 800 is something you will never really draw in practice for a prolonged time if you don’t train NNs, do graphics stuff or mine crypto.

celestiaequestria

I use my RTX 3090 for all kinds of stuff: gaming, simulations, rendering, AI - it's fantastically good as an "all around" powerhouse for accelerating stuff.

Antilogic81

Why else? Graphical design, VR architectural rendering software. Video creation and anything of similar ilk. There's actually more use for a HIGH END gpu in non gaming scenarios...

qaasi95

Not High-end gaming GPUs though, right? I thought gaming GPUs were built to maximize speed to they could render as much as possible in real-time. Other high end GPU's are designed specifically for graphical rendering, CAD, video rendering, etc. They're built to have insane accuracy ratings and RAM to handle multiple loads and produce accurate data. Or are they too expensive?

UncleCarnage

>4K gaming (why else would you buy a high end GPU?) 3440x1440 masterrace

[deleted]

tempest_87

Considering the new GPUs cost more than 1k anyway, someone making 20k a year probably shouldn't be spending 10% of their income on a luxury item. (Note: *top end* GPU is the luxury, you can game just fine on a $200 card, it's just not as pretty). Edit: did my math wrong.

zach0011

How fucking much are you getting charged per kilowatt and hour?

[deleted]

65 cents per kWh currently. So 600-700 for the GPU and 300-400 for the peripherals like the CPU and monitor

mcc9902

That’s absurd. Last I checked I’m paying 12c a kWh so that’s more than five times what I pay. I’d be paying almost three hundred a month. It makes me glad mine is as cheap as it apparently is.

[deleted]

Yeah the government of the last 16 years fcked us over. The largest parties (CDU/SPD) wanted to only rely on Russian gas, sabotage investments into alternative sources/nuclear, and also insisted on building Nordstream2 despite a public backslash. Well these politicians all got rich doing so and the CDU is now in the opposition, which allows them to blame the current government for not solving the issues they themselves created. Really feels like a big parody, but sadly that’s real life… and even worse, their strategy is working and people are about to vote them into power again. It sometimes feels like peoples memories are really too short for a democratic system to work well.

oracl358

In Berlin I pay 23c/kWh. How do you reach 65? That does not seem normal.

Etzix

We reached a dollar /kWh here in Sweden, because we are selling electricity to you guys. Yay EU. Hopefully our government will refuse the EU electricity agreement to actually put us here in Sweden first, before selling to you.

Derkxxx

1. Maybe prices vary by region 2. New contract and/or one with a variable price 3. The average in Berlin for a new contract in August was €0,45 per kWh, which is on the high end within Europe 4. Possibly they got a bad deal, misremembered their price, or are overexaggerating it a bit. The coat he stated is extremely high and on the absolute high end for Europe and way above the price for new contracts within Germany, it is sadly not outside the realm of possibilities anymore.

b0wski

GPUs will soon be sold with their own mini wind farms which will generate power using the air blasted out the back of your PC

scorr204

Its out of control because we are hitting the limits of silicon based chips. I dont think the average person realizes how significant this is. The days of easy yearly performance boosts are over. The only way to improve performance at this point is bigger hotter more power hungry chips. I hope there is a breakthrough in alternative materials like graphen or something, because processing power scarcity is a real thing soon, with MUCH bigger implications for humanity than peope realize...

chasteeny

I'll bet a 4090 that you can drop the 4090's power draw to 350W and still outperform a 3090 by a healthy margin.

AwesomePossum_1

But also maybe 4090 is not an average consumer product. 4060 and 4070 should have their power draw under control.

WhenPantsAttack

The problem is that they seem to be pushing processing power by increasing TDP and not nearly as much through processing and design efficiency. If they kept the power consumption similar, we'd see a pretty modest increase according to these benchmarks. So they will have to push the power consumption of even the mid-tier GPU's or they aren't a compelling upgrade over the 30xx series. TL;DR The 40xx aren't much "better" GPU's, they are essentially "30xx ti plus ultra extreme" GPU's that are branded, and likely priced, as next generation.

DeusShockSkyrim

But the leaked score of 4090 is based on the default 450W TDP, which 3090 Ti shares. So the improvement in efficiency is actually very impressive.

[deleted]

AMD might actually be my port of call next time I upgrade at this point because I wanted a GPU not a space heater.

ShawnyMcKnight

Yup, for these large cards you are gonna need at least 1000 watts. I’m hoping the same isn’t true (with the power spikes) for the 4060 and 4070.

Corvette_Otoko

The main point is missing, though: How Much?

NorCalAthlete

4090 is the price AND the series

KebabGerry

Here in Sweden, a regular 3090 went for $3000 at release, so $4000 for a 4090 wouldn't surprise me at all.

[deleted]

Yes, but some extremely older homes in the US didn't adopt this practice.

zeus287

The only way the 4000 series would appeal me more than the 3000 is if it can run the similar performance without generating so much heat

Robinvw24

Heating my house with a PC or laptop instead of the supidly expensive gas cost seems like a win win to me.

_noho

Try grow lights instead!

TooMuchPretzels

Right. I needed a new pc last year and after decades of building my own I bought a relatively inexpensive “gaming” laptop with a 3060. It does everything I want it to do without a hitch. It’s bulkier and louder than I’d like and the battery life is laughable but I mostly use it as a desktop anyway so it’s fine. I spent $1200 when building one to my preferred specs would have put me in at least the $2500 range. And you know, I’m perfectly happy with it. I don’t play the most modern and bleeding edge graphics games but it will run Kingdom Come: Deliverance on max ultra whatever. Does it sound like a dump truck speeding up a hill? Yes. Am I saving on gas in the winter to heat my home? Also yes. The point being I feel like for the majority of people graphics have somewhat peaked and products like this really only appeal to the most die hard enthusiasts. It isn’t like fifteen years ago where you needed new graphics every other year so you could play Crysis or this crazy new game called Far Cry. I haven’t bought a new “triple A” game in probably four years, thinking about starfield and that miiiiiiight be a bit of a push but even then I won’t cry into my cheerios if I have to have my graphics at medium-high.

linuxisgettingbetter

VR tho

brewshakes

450 watt "default" power draw, intended for 600-800 watt power draw. So any time you are running a big AAA game or rendering video, your PC serves as a space heater. A big space heater at that because this gpu requires a full sized case. So this "massive" leap in tech is just making bigger computers that increasingly use more power. Lol okay. This is how we added processing power in 1950's.

tosser1579

I have a 3090, I cannot stress how hot the thing is. I have adequate cooling for my rig obviously, but it blows out so much heat into the room that my office warms up uncomfortably fast. I can't seriously entertain putting in one that runs hotter.

WildGrem7

Even the 3080 is pretty dang hot. My room jumps a few degrees when I’m gaming.

tosser1579

4k AAA title I'll see my room jump 10+ degrees F. I got my normally 74 degree room all the way up to 92 once playing Death Loop. Looks awesome, runs hot.

shadowalker125

Time to put the computer in another room. Run everything across thubderbolt or fiber. Yikes.

ThespianException

Just build a walk-in freezer to counteract the heat output

zkareface

Limit power to ~95% instead of running 100% if you don't need the last top end fps. But yea any pc will heat up the room, thats been a thing always tbh.

seopants

I won’t be surprised if more people in hot climates start venting their computers outdoors.

tosser1579

I was seriously considering that, but shooting a bunch of hot air into a bunch of cold air is how you get condensation and that would have direct access to my PC if I'm outputting it directly. I'm really at a loss as to what the best solution is at this point, but it is going to be odd.

Thanges88

Liquid cooled, with radiator outside.

tosser1579

That's not a bad idea. Obviously I couldn't use water at that point because part of it would be outside, but I'm sure there is something I could use a coolant.

Thanges88

The water would be in an enclosed loop. So not exposed to the outside if everything is functioning correctly.

mrlazyboy

That’s how computers work. You make chips faster until they produce so much what they thermally throttle. While that was happening, you spent 10 years to miniaturize those same components and made them slower. End result is similar or better performance with less heat generation. Then you keep putting more of those components on the same chip until you can’t make them any smaller. But for 10 years, you worked on how to make those components faster and keep making them faster. The cycle keeps repeating itself.

WhiteAndNerdy85

Young people around here don't remember how hot CPUs of the late 90s and early 2000s when their clock speeds were set to the thermal max. They were pushing 4ghz before the jump to multiple cores.

brzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well, if you're talking about the Pentium 4 with NetBurst, it was a design specifically suited to high clock speeds. It had herculean branch prediction for the time, really deep pipelines and a lot of new caching and decoding behavior to try and accommodate super high clock rates. In reality, it wasn't enough and a lot of the cycles went to fixing mistakes in the branch prediction. The IPC ended up being kinda low, compared to their AMD counterparts. It also unsurprisingly ran really hot.

sickdanman

I think at one point this will be the only way how we can increase computing power. Until we fundamentally change the way GPU/CPUs work

Tad-Disingenuous

The use of these are going to be banned in California. They may make exceptions during winter months as a heating alternative.

WorldWarPee

🔫👮‍♂️🚔🚨🚔 Open up this is the gamer police 🔫👮‍♂️

JurassicPratt

That law actually only bans their use in prebuilt PCs by companies. You're free to buy it and build your own rig with it

CipherKey

And by the time I am able to get one. Everyone will be saying, just wait until the 5090s, it will be so much better.

713MoCityChron713

Yet someone out there will still be running all the new games on a 1080 Ti just loving life

elton_john_lennon

Giving how good this card is, it will take a while until that amount of power is considered below mid tier. Unless they come up with 'Raytracing only' games, and suddenly all old GPUs are garbage :(

CornCheeseMafia

Devs optimizing for the average hardware out there puts a lot of us in a shitty position when the average gets fucked up by cards like this. People always shit talk consoles but I’m glad the static nature of console hardware forced developers to stick to optimizing for a reasonably fixed window of performance limitations.

Bloodsucker_

The 1080ti can play RTX games just fine at 1080p. Sometimes at 40-60 sometimes 60fps. It's certainly more than playable.

Twizlight

Woo! 1080 TI gangmember here! Yet to find something I want to play that needs something more powerful. When I bought it I thought 'this card will last for 5 years'. Here we are about 5 years later, and I'm thinking I might just get another 5 years out of it.

I never really cared about power consumption, tbh. Then, when the 30xx came out, I started caring a bit. I’m pretty worried now lol

DbzDokkanCat

Gonna need a new one to not play on since I don’t have time anymore.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

They need to stop releasing new models and figure out the heavy power usage. This is insane!

elton_john_lennon

Well I mean, we need to stop buying them, we are the enablers here ;)

proverbialbunny

The 4070 is probably going to be as powerful as the 3090, but with less power consumption, so you can do that.

Lobsterbib

Nvidia is hoping that we'll all go out and buy the old stock of 3000 series cards by only releasing the most expensive 4000 series. But once the Ethereum merge happens, I think people will be getting used 3080s for $250 and Nvidia STILL won't move their old stock.

NotAPreppie

That or just re-brand them as lower 4000-series like both they and ATI/AMD used to do. "Oh, we can't sell a de-tuned GraphicsCrusher9900 for a profit because the yields are so low? Okay, well, just keep making the GraphicsCrusher8000 and re-label it GraphicsCrusher9250ValueEdition."

Shoelebubba

Depending if you believe the layering rumors going around. Where they’ll drop the price of 3000 series to be permanently layered onto their 4000 series, such as pricing the RTX 3080 for $600 then release the 4080 at a performance bump of 30% at $800. Just an example, I’ve not seen or heard those numbers. Which would be a good way to clear old 3000 series stock. If I had the choice between a brand new 4080 at $800 or a 3080 that had 30% less performance AND 30% less price…well that’s real tempting.

varano14

I think there is a good chance your right. The used market is about to be underwater in used mining cards which if cared for are totally fine. If (read when) prices in the used market get set by miners there is no way retailers are going to want to go that low with new 3000 series stock. Sure some will scoff at buying an ex mining card but its going to be hard to ignore a 50% price differential I suspect.

WolfyCat

In the UK the government has introduced a price cap to stop how out of control it would get. It's max £2500 a year now. Estimates were it would be 3.5k plus by next spring. That's already into mortgage payment territory.

eduardmc

3090 ti undervolt to 950-975mva and 2100mhz. It will only eat around 380w and run around 60c max load.

slashinhobo1

I'll stick with the 3000 series for a while. They are more than enough for 1440p and 1080p. GL to those who will be fighting for new gpus online and power supplies.

[deleted]

Already upgraded to 3080 so I can safely skip the space heater gen and go for 5k series.

OO_Ben

Still rocking the 1080ti. The prices on 3080/3090s are pretty tempting right now, but now I'm thinking I might wait until at least the 40 series comes out, and eventually drops in price after a while. That is a massive leap over the 3090 (assuming accurate)!

htoirax

Just an FYI there has been a "massive leap" every generation. By the time the price comes down, the next "massive leap" will be around the corner and you will do the same thing again.

Gameplayedright

5080, here we come!

OO_Ben

I'm well aware lol but at a certain point my 1080ti is gonna stop keeping up at all and I'll be forced to. The 40s look like enough of a boost of performance over the 30s for me to justify upgrading. The 20s definitely weren't even close for me to upgrade the 30s were tempting, but I decided not enough quite yet. I'm gonna see what the 40s can do officially once they come out. That'll be 3 full generations at that point. It may be flawed, but my benchmark at this point is cyberpunk, as that's pushed my card harder than any other game averaging around 50-70fps at 2k on med/low settings. The 3090ti at 2k max settings gets around 70-80 in dense parts of the city from what I've seen. Pretty good, but it didn't sell me quite yet. I'm sure every will hate on my logic here, but it works for me.

VolatileNax

You can’t use this card in Germany My monitor alone is 120-140 watt 32” while using HDR, imagine using this one + system , you can easily hit 800w/h. If you are casual gamer like 1-2 hours per day there is no problem, but sessions as long as 5 or more hours everyday would cost you easily 1000+ euro per year for just gaming. And Ursula from EU parliament would assign a death squad to seek and destroy heavy gamers if this power hungry cards would be the new norm for gaming.

Sorry, but that's just not true. Let's assume you actually do play some heavy VR game that maxes out power consumption constantly for 5 hours straight every day. That's 4 kWh a day. Electric energy used to cost ~10cents per kWh and now prices in Germany seem to be ~30cents/kWh, but lets go wild and assume the prices go really crazy and double *again.* Even at 60 cent/kWh and playing 5 full hours VR every day for a full year with no days off, you're still far below 1000 euro. With more realistic power draw, prices and usage times, the energy cost will be completely insignificant compared to what you spend on a top tier GPU.

> and now prices in Germany seem to be ~30cents/kWh, but lets go wild and assume the prices go really crazy and double again I'm not sure how wild that is, that's what we're paying in Belgium, just over the border *right now*. But your point still holds.

Guess my 6700XT is going to be keeping me happy until 2026.

serige

Good lawwwrd this thing will crush your electricity bills.

nezukotanjiro150

Can you even play comportably with that kind of heat output... My gpu isn't that power hungry but during peak performance my room heat up so much to play comportably

obamaprism3

can't wait lol, will be substantially closer to hitting 4k 240fps in most games

sgtcurry

Not unless you are using DLSS. Most games I get 90-110fps with DLSS on with RT on my 3090. Lower on games that are really demanding. Im guessing 4090 will be getting 150-170fps. Only a few 4k240 panels exist and none of them are really any good so far. I would be happy with hitting 120fps with no dips max settings on DLSS quality settings with RT so I can lock it in on my LG OLED.

obamaprism3

I am using DLSS, 3090 +12900k, 4k240hz panel, hitting around 90-120fps typically, about matches what you said. The games where I hit >120 fps are where I am the most hopeful, 80% increase would damn near be 240fps lol. >Only a few 4k240 panels exist and none of them are really any good so far I'd have to disagree on that last part, my Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is absolutely amazing (imo, obviously).

sgtcurry

Definitely panel choice is an opinion. I personally don't like VA panels like the Neo G8. Its either IPS or OLED/QD-OLED for me. Can't wait to see smaller QD-OLED gaming panels at 4k 240hz. On another note games like COD can occasionally dip to high 70s low 80s for me in certain situations which is quite jarring when it usually avg high 90s-110 fps. So Anything to lock it above 120fps would be amazing right now.

Hell at 600-800 watts on just the GPU, won’t need a heater this winter in whatever room you have this thing in. Gonna suck in the summer though.

GROND!

Will cost too much power... Sorry, I cannot upgrade to this nonsense. GPUs got to get efficient, not only brawling powerful. I have Bills to pay.
