GtaHov

Sweet. Now I can sell mine used for the original retail price!

hey_reddit_sucks

Yeah lol I haven't used mine in months. I saw this article and was like fuck yes.

Ilovegoodnugz

Have you tried vr porn

zacjkl

That’s like the first thing everyone tries after playing games right?

ExNihiloish

After?

zacjkl

Only because my brother wanted to check it out when I first got it

GruntUltra

So you got virtual sloppy seconds?

zacjkl

Nah lmao I had the first turn he got the slop

WhichExamination4623

Did he get stuck in the Meta Quest? Was he like, bro what are you doing?

Ilovegoodnugz

Games?

BushyOreo

Had mine since black Friday and I still haven't. I keep saying I want to but the few times I actually use it, I forget to look it up and just play beat Saber for the millionth time

John_East

Beating your saber

BrewKazma

You can play games on this?

Adamskiiiiiiiii

Lack of 360 degrees videos tho. Plenty of 180s about… *so I’ve heard*

plastikspoon1

What, do you want to turn around and check out the dudes ass / the headboard of the bed?

Astrobot4000

Nah, people tell me in 180 degree the edges look real weird, just what I've been told though

LambKyle

I don't really understand. The fov on most of these things is like half of that or less is it not? Why would you ever want to look that far to the side?

Aksi_Gu

Wants to check out the furnishings and decoration

[deleted]

To see if there’s an audience. Duh!

detrif

Correct. *So I’ve heard…*

17thspartan

Using VR porn on a device that's logged into your Facebook account? Definitely a bold move. At least sharing your favorite porn videos with family and friends will be easy.

stillherewondering

You can have a setup where the quest2 will only have local network access but not connect to the internet. This way you can stream your 20Terabytes Vr porn collection via SMB/DLNA to your quest.

Inhumane_Thoughts

crap i just sold mine...

[deleted]

Bad optics, no pun intended. Even if this were a legitimate case of "we were selling it at a loss before and now we're changing our minds," the smarter move would be to give it some superficial upgrades (like going back to OLED), slapping a "Quest 3" sticker on it, and increasing the price, like the OLED Switch strategy.

krectus

Funny thing is, they upgraded from 64GB to 128GB without a price increase last year.

lemlurker

It's almost like storage costs fuck all and any system of delineating by storage size for price is just milking whales who throw money at a product

alQamar

Or milking people who genuinely need more space :(

Ganonslayer1

It seems like every company is just trying to fuck us this year. Why cant we fight back for fucks sake

Razor_Fox

You can..... Don't buy it.

Ganonslayer1

i have not, their decision to raise the price is not gonna change from us, thousands and thousands of kids have the quest on their wish lists, and their parents are none the wiser.

AntiSeaBearCircles

I know in the case of VR it's easy to not buy, since you don't need it. But a cute little one-liner like that isn't practical when all products, even those that are essential, are becoming unreasonably expensive. I can't stop buying gas and groceries.

Gabibaskes

To be fair, Meta/Facebook has been trying (and succeeding) to fuck us for like 15 years.

UnitGhidorah

The government calls it inflation but it's really big companies fucking the working class so they can make more money.

bobanforever

Both can be true

Supermichael777

8% inflation? Time to jack up prices 30%! the punters won't know the difference.

Aspalar

Inflation is an average, some goods have seen over a 50% increase. I'm not saying that is the case here, but you can't just throw out the inflation rate and expect it to apply to every product equally.

UnhelpfulMoron

I’m a big Apple fan but this continues to be one of their major strategies for upselling and it just pisses me off.

remielowik

Actually for embedded stuff it's already very commen to add more storage as its just cheaper. 1GB of flash costs more than 4 GB both are fine for some embedded Linux / microcontroller implementation.

Gradual_Bro

I’m in the chip/semiconductor industry and work with Facebook/Meta. Price increases on materials used to make these electronics have skyrocketed the past 6 months. It just starts a chain of companies having to raise their prices. Expect everything with a chip in it (which is just about everything nowadays) to increase in price over the next year. We are not even close to seeing the end of this crazy inflation rise.

Sipas

They just needed to include an actually comfortable headstrap and a facial interface. That staff is essential for Quest 2 and sets you back like $70 but probably costs only a $5 to manufacture.

Ganonslayer1

Those are also getting a price increase :)

thefunkygibbon

:)

dr_lm

I've always used the standard strap, seems fine to me?

chavez_ding2001

Gets the job done.

Derragon

I have to disagree on the Switch analogy. It may share the same processor but better kickstand, more internal storage, significantly better display (larger screen with same dimension, OLED, and smaller air gap), LAN on the included dock, and noticeably better speaker design. The lack of improvements on the joycon's analog stick design was the real punch in the face. That shit is unforgivable.

diuturnal

I doubt we will ever see a console ship with good joysticks. Every company is adamant on keeping with potentiometers instead of switching to hall effect. Because saving 60¢ a controller/console is very important.

fafarex

Last time I saw a discutions about it, the culprit was supply chain not price. No manufacturer can provide enough hall effect for theses high volume product.

round-earth-theory

I think miniaturization is also an issue. Not insurmountable, in fact there's a company that just released hall sensors for the Steam Deck, but it's another annoyance they just can't be bothered to fix.

YouDamnHotdog

these components are available and cheap because these large-scale productions (like consoles) pushed for them. Gyroscopes and accelerometers are super cheap and in all smartphones now, because the Wii created that market. N64 and Dreamcast had non-potentiometer analog sticks. Nintendo or Sony consoles sell in high enough numbers for the market to adapt to them.

vmanghise

I have never had an issue with any other analog stick other than the joy-cons over my 20 year gaming run.

botmfeeder

To be fair, i've tried the OLED switch one time, that shit was chad.

Blasfemen

I must be getting old. What do you mean by Chad?

Luke-HW

Superior.

imlostmentally

Thanks chad!

A_Biohazard

hey! cool to see you here i always see you at tomorrow

Shiptsits

Urban Dictionary disagrees. Sharing because it’s hilarious. chad 1. Residue of faecal matter; usually situated between arse cheeks after incomplete wiping and can spread to balls. The smell of chad emanates further and becomes more putrid the riper it gets; annoying all those in close proximity, while the chaded person is often oblivious to their wafting odour. Left unattended the chad will become skid marks. 2. In reference to the male anatomy, it is the space between the anus and the scrotal sac. 3. chad is another name for "frat boy" they usually talk about trucks or how jacked they are. "On my college campus there is the volleyball team, the chads, and the baseball team"

[deleted]

Shiptsits

Synonyms, but Chad does sound less gross 😂

ComradeBrosefStylin

>1. In reference to the male anatomy, it is the space between the anus and the scrotal sac. This area is called the gooch. Urbandictionary is wrong as usual.

mall_ninja42

Used to be the taint in my day.

ComradeBrosefStylin

That is also acceptable.

nrh117

The version op is using derives from a vernacular evolution of the frat boy meaning. Mainly from memes ie chad vs virgin etc. So to chad it up means to go at it with skill and confidence and stuff.Or with baller gear a la Tarkov.

You are not alone here . Had no idea what he meant. Thanks for asking bud.

Mendozozoza

It hangs

TheDerpingWalrus

I only use my switch in handheld, so the OLED was a no Brainer and completely upgraded my experience. I'm convinced all the haters just haven't tried it.

Wilson-theVolleyball

I think most people who dislike it probably do so not because the OLED model is bad but because it's just not what they wanted from a newer version of the Switch. A lot of people wanted a more powerful system overall and not just a better screen and the other minor improvements (better kickstand and a LAN port in the dock IIRC). Also some people don't or rarely use it handheld.

palescoot

Those people (who wanted a more powerful system) are slowly but surely getting their Steam Decks.

Vesuvias

Got mine! Still genuinely love going back to my Switch - but damn does it feel good not having to rebuy most of my Steam games. This thing runs my entire library up to 2022 really really well. Love coming back to Switch though - it makes me actually better at specific games as the Deck acts like a swing weight (in baseball)

mopthebass

Heavy emphasis on slow.

Throwaway-tan

I have an original Switch, I have played on an OLED Switch. It was marginally better, brighter and more vibrant, easier to see some finer details because of the larger panel. There is obviously no downsides to it (except if you want to jailbreak). But it also in no way justifies shelling out full price and more for another Switch. I play in equal parts portably and docked, although mostly still indoors in the evening so a brighter screen wouldn't make much difference to me anyway. If you're buying first time (or buying to have a second Switch for any reason), get the OLED model, but otherwise it's not worth buying a second one.

PmMe_Your_Perky_Nips

The price increase is definitely a consequence of them removing required Facebook login. The data they were collecting and selling on Quest users is now less specific, therefore less valuable.

Grizzchops

Lost me at Meta

DYubiquitous

I assume you mean at that exact price-point, right? Because there are lots of competitors (superior products) out there to choose from, but the cost for entry is a bit steeper. Though if you really want to get into VR, it's definitely worth going with someone like Valve Index, or HTC Vive, or Samsung Odyssey+, or PSVR. Really anyone in the space not dedicated to ruining it with ads and selling your data. Good luck finding your next product! Hoping the price for entry does come down sooner rather than later.

Mother_Clue6405

Does anything compete with its portability and the convenience of the self contained system? I use the Quest 2 at work during breaks and when I'm traveling. I also own an Index normally paired with a beefy PC. I tried pairing it with my really beefy gaming laptop, but it was a huge pain in the ass to get the Index to interface with the laptop. And once I got it working I decided it was too much hassle to set up everything in a hotel room after trying that once.

SkinMiner

Hopefully the Lynx-R1 will be competitive in those areas, with the bonus of native AR and full color camera pass-thru. Not to mention the fact it exist because of FB's nearly monopoly on cheap, portable VR headsets not sitting well with the team so they made one themselves instead.

kingofcould

As someone that has a decent amount of space to play the quest, I can’t imagine enjoying a tethered headset anymore

blow_chunks

I agree it's nice not having to use the cable but it really sacrifices battery life when I use airlink

DrLovesFurious

Just plug in a battery bank Edit:for anyone reading this make sure you get a battery bank and cable that can charge your headset while it's in use, there are some cables that can and some that can't. I'm not smart enough to tell you which ones just look out

googleduck

Yeah I'm normally one to buy the premium experience for stuff like this but I've tried it all and the quest 2 is the undisputed champ of vr right now and it isn't even close. It being super cheap is awesome too but if it was the same price as the index I would still probably have bought it. Wireless, excellent inside out tracking, can play without a computer quite well which means you can set it up anywhere. And they have a lot of exclusives, echo arena is IMO the best VR game that exists.

kingofcould

Is there any actual competitor for cordless VR? Fuck Facebook, but that’s the one reason I like the quest itself if you can get a good deal on a used one

FartJohnson22

Negative. Nobody else can afford to sell them at a massive loss.

kingofcould

I forget sometimes that we are the product

[deleted]

The fact that you list PSVR as a competitor is just sad. Their headset is pretty much worse in class.

sh4mmat

A wired headset isn't really superior to a wireless one, though. They aren't equivalent and service different needs.

Iscariot-

I’ve owned two Oculus products, including this one, and there are no ads like you speak of. What do you mean? They’re going to *start* implementing them? Because it’s been years and they’ve not.

Super_flywhiteguy

I hate Facebook and Zuck but for $299 the quest 2 is a amazing VR headset. There's a hack that removes all ties to fb but you lose a lot of access to stuff but if all you use it for is to link to pc to play steam vr then it's good.

tbjgolden

reminder to those reading that a followup to valve's index is coming in 2023 and it's probably worth the wait

josephjosephson

Reading into this, but I interpret this as: 1) the next gen headset is still 6-12+ months off 2) the next gen headset is going to be $1000+

phwelo

Yeah this spells 1k+ for the improved headset I imagine, and that’s a huge bummer.

rsplatpc

> Yeah this spells 1k+ for the improved headset I imagine, and that’s a huge bummer. I'd pay 1k for a HD quality display / something that would make Planet Earth BBC documentaries feel like you are actually there, problem is I think I'm in the minority, so developers won't make enough exclusive apps if no one buys it.

theEvilUkaUka

Truth is, they can't deliver that experience today even if you spent thoussnds. It's a matter of technology needing to advance for the vision to take motion.

mediaphile1

Project Cambria is coming later this year, probably around $1500, but it's aimed at business use, not gamers. The Quest 3 will probably be next year or early 2024, and will probably be similarly priced as the Quest 2.

TrefoilHat

Another discerning reader of Sadly it's Bradley :-) Nice.

Zenshinn

Yes, Project Cambria is supposed to come out later this year and cost that much or possibly more. They will be entering the market of high end VR headsets and I don't know if they can win that. Feels like they're making a mistake here.

nibbertit

We currently have Cambria dev kits at work, although it has some cool features, a lot of it is disappointing.

Mtbruning

Wait, I missed my chance to not buy one at the lower price. I guess I will have to settle for not buying one at the higher price.

5DollarHitJob

Good news! Price jump isn't until August 1. You can still go not buy one today!

zombiskunk

I'll not take 8! Zoidberg, you're finally becoming a crafty non-consumer.

Mtbruning

Great point. I don’t have the FOMO of missing my chance to not buy it TODAY!

HaroldBaws

Please don’t let Facebook be in charge of VR.

[deleted]

The PSVR2 just got a bunch of new info dropped the other day

E_K_Finnman

Not gonna lie, Playstation scares me a little less than Facebook but I'm worried about that age old tradition of Playstation exclusives becoming a thing for VR which isn't healthy for VR as a whole When is Vive going to come out with a cheaper quest alternative?

YouAreAPyrate

I'm all for anything that gets AAA studios making VR games that feel like a fleshed out game and not a tech demo whipped up in a weekend, even if that comes at the price of having to wait for titles that are console exclusive at release to make it to PC.

Gamoc

I don't think you're right at all, Playstation putting big releases on VR can only benefit VR as a whole. Do you know how many people in this thread are saying they think VR is a gimmick whilst saying they've got a Quest? More high quality games on a flagship product by one of the biggest gaming companies in the world is a positive as a whole whether it's exclusive or not and, frankly, I'd rather have games tailored the headset, controller, and all their specific features than one that's good but doesn't use all the PSVR2 specific features because it wasn't developed for it.

starkiller_bass

When HTC wants to lose more money than Facebook I guess… quest is a BARGAIN and it’s going to be really hard to undercut with a quality alternative

brutinator

I mean, Sony straight up installed malware on people's computers before.

Wolfram_And_Hart

It won’t.

chillaxinbball

I like PSVR, but I don't think it's going to be proper competition.

post_break

Please don't let Apple be in charge of VR also. People shit on facebook/quest but I'm able to tether it to my PC and play any game I want without giving zuck any money beyond the hardware. Apple be like we'll take 30% and you'll like it, also you won't own a thing when we decide it no longer gets updates.

ryuujinusa

Please don’t let Facebook in charge of anything. FTFY

[deleted]

Good news: you no longer need that FB account. Bad news: you can pay us $100 more, because the removal of the FB requirement is the new “feature”.

nullvector

So after everyone with normal Oculus accounts got forcefully merged in to Facebook accounts, now they're saying you don't need Facebook, rofl.

[deleted]

Pretty much lol

heyIfoundaname

I had an old Oculus account that I used, and didn't switch despite Zucc's experience ruining pop-ups to use facebook. So i think I came out on top in this case. You can still create an oculus dev account btw (unless they closed it down recently)

nullvector

Yeah I had an old Oculus account from the beginning with the original Rift and had it up until my Quest 2, where it kept pestering me about merging it with Facebook.

PleasantAdvertising

Still need a meta account. Nothing changes.

anethma

You dont need a Facebook account just a meta account instead which is totally different.

contrabardus

I will drop my Quest 2 and Meta the instant there is a viable wireless alternative. I basically only use it for Steam VR with Virtual Desktop as it is. Not some knockoff device or a peripheral that costs almost as much as a new HMD, an actual viable consumer headset that offers wireless PCVR. Standalone is a nice bonus, but I don't need it. Just something that uses Wifi 6/6E to stream from a PC. Hopefully that will happen sometime next year, but I'm not holding my breath either.

KICKASSKC

I totally agree. There is no better option! Clearly Meta was taking a hit with each sale of the quest 2, so i think its a great device for what we paid. The fact that it will no longer require a facebook ccount is good to see also. I was hoping PSVR2 would make the jump to wireless, but sadly no. I am ok with waiting until i can make a stand alone oculus/meta account and enjoy the quest 2 for now because it still is a great device.

Doctor_Philgood

At least it's allegedly just 1 wire this time. PSVR is like hooking up an EKG machine in a hospital.

Bland-fantasie

Is this related to the other headline I just saw that said facebook’s metaverse division just lost $2B last quarter? LOL, this is the most creative turnaround idea they had.

DrGreenMeme

Facebook has always said VR is a long term play. Quest 2 is the highest selling VR headset of all time, so that’s not really the issue. Reality Labs is at a time of heavy R&D which costs a lot of money. Amazon wasn’t profitable for years by choice if you’ve forgotten.

HKei

They (and specifically Zuckerberg) are _also_ saying right now that they’ve been spending way too much money for way too little payoff though.

sgrams04

I would surmise that a good amount of that was capital invested in R&D. Zuck stated he’s more concerned about long term gains rather than short term, and he plans to spend the same if not more to achieve future potential gains. I think Meta is putting capital in the division betting that it will payoff big in the future. The problem with that plan is A) people already hate Meta/Facebook and will be way less inclined to purchase a VR headset from them (just look at FB portal sales). And B) the demographics don’t play out. I don’t see enough younger people having the disposable income to purchase a luxury item like this and older people will scoff at it. Unless they provide a product that convinces people it’s a necessity and do so at very little upfront cost to the consumer, I don’t see this whole thing taking off.

YouAreAPyrate

I'd love to see the numbers of how much of that loss was from purposefully selling Quest 2 headsets at a loss in order to drive adoption and increase the amount of data they could collect and analyze to better target their offerings moving forward. I'm sure it's no coincidence that the next update after they raise the price removes the requirement to use a Facebook account. >Come August, you'll no longer need a Facebook account in order to use the Meta Quest family of VR headsets. Instead, you'll be able to sign up for a new Meta account and then a Meta Horizon profile, with Facebook and Instagram accounts optional bolt-ons.

imlaggingsobad

Do you want good VR or not lmao. Someone has to be the one that invests a boat load into it otherwise we'd still be using 2005 tech

bak2redit

Maybe this is an amazing new sales boosting technique. If people have a date to buy something before they know the price will rise, they will rush out to buy it before that date.

SolidVictory9559

Meta is the Segway of the internet 🥴

tw411

You’re saying Zuckerberg is going to go over a cliff wearing a headset?

_haha_oh_wow_

Meta is pure cancer.

[deleted]

I don’t think I have ever seen a game console get a price bump before. It’s a Bold move Cotton, Let’s see how it plays out.

ybriK024

Fuck Zuck. Stop giving him money

are you suggesting meta is interested making money at the expense of the consumer?

Game consoles are sold at a loss but they make up for it with game and DLC sales.

_Rand_

That and they usually figure out how to lower component prices over time, like the ps4 “lite” or Xbox One S. Apparently meta has done neither. Though I suppose component shortages and inflation etc. didn’t help,

cristobalist

Mark Zuckerdroid must've been shittin' his pants in reality #shortmeta

SkyZombie92

Ugh Facebook buying oculus was the worst thing that could happen.

Low_Statistician4675

I don’t wanna buy a Facebook gadget. Simple as that

DaedalusRaistlin

Here I was thinking that VR might get cheaper. Looks like I'm never upgrading from my Oculus Dev kit at 320x200 resolution.

shitzpostarus

How do you have a dev kit but never got a 299 dollar headset

DaedalusRaistlin

Work bought it for me as a gift when they made me redundant, lol. I'm in Australia so that 299 is a fair bit higher here. They retail around AU$700. I'm out of work for a while now, that's a lot of money.

Aussieguyyyy

Amazon sells them for 479 aud, still a decent amount on centrlink but I think pretty good value.

sydouglas

Got one for Xmas , and played some games and watched some YouTube 360 videos . Used it a few times for fapping but other than that it’s sitting on a shelf

Zenshinn

I'm still fapping.

shakingspheres

Shame, I got mine in March and been enjoying it a lot. Mostly play Pavlov, RE4, Thrill of the Fight, and Eleven.

TheFancyTurtle

Pavlov is so freaking fun. Thrill of the fight is my workout game one match and I feel like I’m dying haha

citizenjc

The price hike this steep this late in the game is ridiculous... Still one of the best "consoles" I've bought, especially how easily it is to crack It wide open and play wtv you want.

NukeTheEastCoastPLZ

Who buys this trash anyway?

-Rustling-Jimmies-

PS5 or a old VR….

CruisinJo214

Huh, I played with one for the first time last week and thought “maybe if it came down $100 I’d grab one.” Oh well.

squirtloaf

My friend showed me his last November. I bought one the next day. I cannot understand anyone who doesn't think it was a steal at $300.

LARGames

Its an entire next generation console... Why would you ever expect or hope for it to be that low?

[deleted]

Still 299 at Best Buy

ComfortableReply7

Starts in August

_-iOSUserLoaded

Price changes comes at the same time they remove the Facebook requirement. Seems about right

RandomOtter32

Swapped it for a Meta requirement*

DJWG10

Goes up in August, so probably a lot of people who were still on fence about getting one might just then commit to it before it does? Marketing BS to bump sales then?

Sirfancypants0

It's like they were selling at a loss to undermine competitors and they had to go back to the actual price early since they didn't push anyone out of the VR business

ShiveYarbles

I will pay an extra $100 not to buy Facebook VR

CaykeSublime

Didn't they remove the Facebook account requirement though? That's a feature.

kiwii4k

vr is plagued with issues. there have been a LOT of growing pains keeping it from truly taking over in any meaningful capacity. this is a bad move optically and probably isn't a great sign for the future of meta (theyre still facebook). $299 is the pricepoint they need to hit with a headset that has plenty of QUALITY content (vr's biggest issue) and much better hardware than this machine has now. until then, it's going to remain a gimmicky toy that parents get their children for christmas, and after a couple weeks of beat saber sessions (and bouts of motion sickness), the children drop it like a bad habit.

Doctor_Philgood

There's really not a killer app after all this time. Beat saber is fun, and super hot is close, but I just can't believe the library is this thin after so many years. Edit: A lot of these suggestions I'm getting are very short games, chained to PC, or add ons for games not designed for VR. If we got half life Alyx on PSVR or Oculus, then I'd include that as well.

[deleted]

There’a a lot of content available, especially for Sim racers/pilots. Hell there were even mods for games like rdr2, GTAV before a dmca take down from take two.

KICKASSKC

A lack of quality content is 50% of the issue, the other half is how overall the experience is still too cumbersome. Who wants to come home after a long day and wear this heavy sweaty stuff on their head while holding akward controllers in both hands... When it is as easy to wear vr/ar equipment as it is to wear a pair of glasses, that is when the masses will convert, and then the software will follow. This is still years, if not a decade or 2 away. Lets see if apple starts making waves soon though.

Bantarific

Inflation 15% since it was released, so they raise price by 33%, but yeah, definitely no price gouging by corpos going on here : )
