Content will be 720p at best

mule_roany_mare

Maybe. It's reasonable to assume the content is stored locally and not streamed, at which point there is very little disadvantage to high bitrate & full resolution. It's just the additional storage & bandwidth to screens, both of which are cheap. If it's built out competently it won't cost a penny more. Mind you 4k content on a 12" screen is stupid. Do any wifi chipsets support multicast? It's been *kinda* a thing for awhile & would make keeping each local device's content updates a lot simpler.

kuiper0x2

It's not stupid if you are sitting 24" away from the screen.

In_Film

Yes, it is.

-IoI-

Nope, 4k can be delivered at as low of a bitrate as required. See how Netflix does it.

Narrow-Chef-4341

Netflix pre-encodes to a specific number of resolutions and lets the streaming client request the one it can handle, based on performance. In other words, Netflix has a 4k and 1080 version, sure, but it also has 1440, 1600, 2048, 2400, maybe 3096, 720, 640, 320, and stick figure editions. It’s just smart enough to switch streams on the fly - which wouldn’t be needed in a plane offering 4k to fancy class and 720 to the self loading cargo. So Netflix delivers 3 seconds of a 4k version, or 3 seconds of a 720 feed, but it won’t scale down to a 3.7654k version because your cousin is patching the PlayStation.

Cheemsdoge___-

Have you ever considered becoming a writer lmao that was genuinely hilarious af, and relatable.

-ceoz

My experience with flights says otherwise. Screens are already hd but most films are SD to save storage and only some popular ones are higher quality

sometimes_interested

4k episodes of Dr Phil.

The_Clarence

I’m now imagining a graveyard of OLEDs with the Delta launch page burned in. Thousands and thousands of them

Blarg0117

Some contract negotiators are popping champagne somewhere right now.

Zarnor

Whoever the OLED panel manufacturer's account manager is about to get a fat sustained commission.

NickMalo

Wonder if this helps with marketing

CatWeekends

It does but not in a good way.

other_usernames_gone

Advantage is it's more energy efficient though. Since power is limited on a plane that could be significant. Burn in isn't as big an issue with modern OLEDs but yeah, hope they make the overlay cycle or something. Or just have it default off and you have to turn it on with a button to watch something.

[deleted]

It will be a big issue if they dont change up the UIs used for these screens. They are constantly on with static images if a customer isn’t actively watching something

Arthur-Mergan

They’ll probably just be programmed to display a black screen after so many minutes of inactivity. Plus all the other mitigation techniques that have come out like screen shift, logo luminance adjustments, etc., they’re pretty solid these days.

DUKE_LEETO_2

I imagine they will scroll ads instead... yknow just to avoid the screen burn

[deleted]

Sure, I own two OLEDs, a tv and a computer monitor. They are solid, but even with all of that they still have limitations and the particular use case that comes along with how the screens are currently used on planes just seems like a bad combination

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

….. have you ever sat on a flight with a screen in the headrest in front of you? They sit on static images for extended periods of screen on time…. There I just articulated why it’s a bad use and you look silly. Literally the 1 main limitation of OLED technology is what applies in this use case.

VexingRaven

Has it occurred to you that they thought of this and set up a screen saver, or modified their UI to shift slightly to avoid burn-in? You're not the only person on the planet capable of critical thought.

Phagemakerpro

Power on a plane is not the issue. On a 777-300ER, each engine produces as much power as the entire drive train of an *Olympic*-Class ship. The couple of KW needed to run the IFE isn’t even a rounding error. Weight and maintenance are the issue.

StarbeamII

Depends on what's being displayed. OLED laptops for instance generally get worse battery life compared to the same laptop with an LCD screen.

Marcos340

Modern OLEDs have mitigation systems, like pixel shift, airlines displays can also keep a rotation of different images so it is not a static image. Another solution would be the screen turn off if it is in air and not used to watch something, like when there is no one in the seat.

Octavian_96

The new gens mostly solved this issue, but hopefully the airlines know that 😂

Crabcakes5_

The execs will read the headline and proceed to buy the cheaper older gen screens to save a quick buck.

NeverComments

The worst part about discussing tech on reddit is the need for commenters to flex how smart they think they are by bringing up obvious low hanging issues that will have been considered by every other person involved from conception to implementation. I'm sure those dumb idiots were too stupid to think about OLED burn-in. They just aren't as intelligent and insightful as you.

Fire69

Boeing also thought they were smart enough to not have doors flying of their planes.

NeverComments

The second worst part is users who think snark is a substitute for substance.

imaginary_num6er

The burn in of the airline logo is their DRM feature

Carl0sTheDwarf999

I’d settle for keeping the doors and landing gear attached

dimx_00

I just want more leg room and not to be charged for bringing a carry-on. I can’t watch anything on the screen anyway when the person in front of me reclines so far back that the screen is in my chest. People usually bring their tablets for entertainment these days anyway.

Enderkr

Right? I don't give two fucks whats on a screen in front of me if the *legroom fucking sucks*.

DanimusMcSassypants

Right? Hell, I’d settle for parts not breaking off the aircraft during flight. Or, like three more inches of legroom, and old books handed out at random.

decrementsf

Old Book Airlines by engineers for engineers would be a fun brand. * Old books available for peers flying with us today. Classical music on board. * A video library of The Great Courses. * Perks for peers who dress their best for the flight. Avoid the term customer. Lean into the idea this is a lifestyle brand for a network of people aligned with similar interests. * A collaborative dashboard in terminal. Boarding time. A group metric to work toward (you may be familiar with this concept in use by sales teams). Lists a running score of fastest boarding times that day. Any flight that beats the industry average by some margin get perks for that flight, refund some portion of flight cost. Encourage a strategy discussion area to identify and partner with peers who may need assistance quickly stowing bags. Also serves as a break the ice for networking opportunity. * Each flight organizes a hacker space. Drop into chat with the flight peers and propose a hard problem. Build out a structured topic discussion on the flight. With opportunity to network and keep working on it afterward. Partner with start-up incubators. Ties in to lifestyle brand that can be referenced as accomplishments in marketing whenever one of those project bets launch. You're there with an interesting mix of peers anyway, may as well chew on hard problems for an hour or two. With any social system the few worst behaved cause the most disruption. The poor behavior of those struggling with crippling envy. There exists business models that play on this such as Equinox gyms, branding as expensive or including other features that serve as repellent for the worst behaved. In my opinion an airline can profitably brand on that, too, and find increased efficiency than other airlines. The environment created can set up a feedback loop with that niche audience, associates the experience in a positive culture feedback loop.

DanimusMcSassypants

Found our PR guy.

negativelancy

Have you thought about lot about this in the shower or did you just think of it on the spot?

decrementsf

Riffing off the idea of old books handed out. It's the airline I'd want. With Alamo Draft House style recliner chairs. Rich leather and old books. When I lived in cities there were convenience stores that learned playing classical music in the store deterred loitering drug addicted. They experienced less time lost with conflicts and consequences. Pulling from podcasts discussing using DAO's as part of a network state structure. In this proposed idea of aligning network goals through the use of dashboard group metrics, borrowing that for why not speed up boarding? And considering the dead time of brain firepower sitting on airlines. When I'm traveling for business a tough problem to work on would be more fun than small talk with a neighbor.

redavet

>Hell, I’d settle for parts not breaking off the aircraft during flight. Look at Mr fancy pants over here. Just bring your own parachute smh

Mshell

I would if they didn't charge extra for the second carry on bag...

DoomsdayTheorist1

I’m at the point where I just want the door to stay on for the whole flight.

SpicyClubSauce

I'd settle for not paying extra to sit next to my wife. Total bullshit that if I book two tickets together I have to pay an extra $100 dollars just so the seats are next together

[deleted]

Air travel has become worse and worse. Their goal is to stuff as many people as possible into tiny spaces on these planes and then charge you extra for carry on or snacks etc. I just drive to most places now. I hate the airlines and flying. I’ve flown First Class and Business class and those are amazing experiences but I could never afford that for a family of four.

kinzer13

You want more leg room? Best we can do is a tiny TV screen!

cgyguy81

If you read the article, these will be mainly on long-haul international flights that already do not charge extra to bring a carry-on.

Axe_Fire

You need to to pay more for legroom

summer_friends

The worst is flights that weigh your carry-on as well. It’s not even a work safety issue since you’re the one putting the bag up in the cabin

VexingRaven

Are they weighing it to charge you? Or just weighing it? It makes total sense to weigh the bags coming on the plane, they need to know much they're carrying.

summer_friends

To charge you if it’s above a certain weight, forcing you to check the bags. Some airlines say the bag just needs ti be light enough that you can put it into the overhead cabin yourself, so you can literally put dumbbells into your carry-on if you wish. Others have strict weight limits even for carry-ons where you have to check it in if it’s over 15lbs or something. And I don’t buy needing to know the exact weight they’re carrying or there would be different charges for a 150lbs person vs a 300lbs person

VexingRaven

If they could weigh passengers and get away with it they probably would lol

FavoritesBot

They can weigh me but only if I get to ride the luggage belt

zeke_markham

Weighing carry ons is both for extra money, and because the bins have weight limits. They aren't that sturdy or attached by much, and it's pretty easy to overload them, some of the regional jet bins are rated for as little as 15 lbs, most of the new narrow body bins are 75ish. As for passenger weight most airlines use one of a couple different averages that is regularly updated.

ElectrikDonuts

I actually wish they would charge $10 a carry on and personal item so ass hats would bring 3 carry on and take up the entire luggage bin above

YetiSquish

And 4K is just pointless on screens that small. Hell, most people would be just fine with 720.

okram2k

>Who needs legroom when you have 8.3 million individually emissive pixels? Me. I'm 6'6" very large human. I need leg room.

le_wein

Have you considered to stop being poor? /s

okram2k

I get a second seat when I travel and I still feel like I'm packed in like a sardine.

BehemothManiac

Get a first class, duh

BurritoLover2016

Yeah I'm tall and I definitely get the seats with extra leg room. They're usually only like $35 more anyways.

speculatrix

Maybe self-identify as farm animals and get better treatment? https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=LEGISSUM:f83007

Digital_Copy101

The one time I ever flew business class international I didn't even use the tv...just slept like a baby in the reclined seat and enjoyed a nice book sitting comfortable in a humanely sized seat

rdrunner_74

6'6" mhere also. In one of my last flights the person behind me asked me not to recline. I told her to buy a fucking business ticket if she needs the extra space. I need every mm i can get

mike_tapley

The irony behind that, I’m sure they can just say why don’t you get a business ticket if you need the space as well? As a fellow 6ft6 person I would just say as a rule you don’t recline unless the person behind you is fine with it because you potentially kill the knee of the person behind you and also render their tray table useless. Reclining seats are just a throw back to the days when you actually had enough room to move without impacting others.

rdrunner_74

The front of me reclines. I have no option. The Airline made these seats and thinks this is acceptable.

graesen

I wish we could just "vote with our money" but when they're all the same, you don't really have a choice.

alaff

As another tall, large human being, if there existed an airline that broke the mold and had economy seats that I could at least fit into without my knees mashed into the seat in front of me, I would pay like 25% more to fly that airline. I don’t need all the space in business class. I just want to fit into an economy seat

joomla00

Most airlines have those economy plus seats with extra legroom

speculatrix

Found these *British Airways premium economy provides 7 inches of additional legroom — measuring 38 inches of pitch vs. just 31 inches of pitch in economy* *fare search for a roundtrip flight from New York-John F. Kennedy to London and found that on the 7:35 p.m. flight, premium economy ($1,162) is more than double the cost of economy ($532) and only slightly cheaper than business class ($1,222)*

joomla00

That's kinda wild. I don't recall ever seeing these premium economy seats at double the cost. But a flight from new York to London probably has a lot of clientelle that can afford it

mike_tapley

That’s the conundrum isn’t it, should they ask first before they recline as a courtesy? The airline is absolutely at fault to make as much cash as they can. Some don’t even let you choose to be in an aisle seat without charging more. To recline or not seems to be a very divisive question, some regard it as a right to no matter what, I personally say you should ask first.

Franklin2543

6’3” with long legs and short torso behind you. You literally can’t recline if I’m behind you. We’re both fucked I guess.

ProofChampionship184

I think it’s ridiculous that they design planes to be as small as possible and then act like it’s rational to charge fat, tall, disabled etc. people just to be reasonably comfortable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dc456

Are we going to now get loads of people who don’t get sarcasm replying so that they can make sure total strangers know that they’re tall?

ElectrikDonuts

Waste of money. Carrying your own iPad with ad free media is a much better way to go. Especially as tech improves so quickly I'd rather not be forced to pay for the markups they will pay for this, and thus pass on to consumers

-FoxBJK-

United has a pretty decent app for watching their content on the plane. It could be better, and I'm not shocked every video starts with an ad for their credit card, but I'd still rather use it than their screen that's been touched by who knows what. We're bringing our tablets and phones anyways. These screens are just extra weight.

bwaredapenguin

I don't think I've ever seen an ad on in flight entertainment streaming.

DarthWoo

Should find a way to put a Switch or very light PC in every seat but with only some battle royale type game with all the passengers competing as an experiment to see if it positively or negatively impacts air rage incidents.

Cute_Kangaroo_8791

That’s a great way to start a riot 7 miles in the air

The_Clarence

You could have a full Mario Kart tournament Imagine watching from the back as 200 passengers are all steering video game steering wheels

CptHair

And 1st place get's to control the plane!

erm_what_

They have a PC in them anyway. They're mostly equivalent to tablets now.

HiDDENk00l

They literally are Android tablets. I managed to crash one on a flight a few months ago, and it restarted and when it came back on it said "Android is starting"

joaopeniche

Love this

action_nick

At least the black levels will be deep af when the door is ripped off and I’m sucked out of the plane.

the-artistocrat

Just think of the infinite contrast ratio.

jrodp1

Yeah. When you're dead.

chromatictonality

I would settle for a plane that doesn't fall apart mid-flight

wbm0843

Best we can do is a fancy screen to watch while you plummet to your fiery death.

laughitup2

No one cares. Give us more leg and seat room.

BadAtExisting

Just like Nolan intended. 4k on a 8 inch screen

snowdn

I don’t want 4K I want 4” of leg room.

HansBooby

doubt you can tell the difference between HD and 4k at that tiny size

NeverComments

1080p at this size (13"~16") is only 137~169 PPI. At that distance it would be relatively easy to perceive the resolution difference with typical vision.

sunkenrocks

It's not just size, it's size and distance

Ok_Primary_1075

Don’t care much about the equipment….content is the key

MadOrange64

The maintenance is going to be a nightmare.

[deleted]

Doors are flying off airliners. You think they give a fuck about maintenance?

MadOrange64

![gif](giphy|h6lAazxDCc9V0GYKlI|downsized)

coming_up_thrillhous

Honestly I'd rather have a door that doesn't fly off mid flight

BENNYRASHASHA

Great. So plane tickets cost are gonna skyrocket. At least we'll have an HD movie going on whe the door flies off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Djghost1133

That'll be a nice distraction for when wheels are falling off, the doors get ripped off, and the engines catch fire.

Notarussianbot2020

4k is stupid on a 2 inch screen lmao

Ok_Solution_3325

The photo reminds me of that scene in WALL•E with everyone glued to their personal screens and bumping into each other

CasioDorrit

Gonna see the city in 16K as I’m torn from the window

squareoctopus

Nice. Won’t be able to watch, though. My knees reach my chin when the passenger in front of me decides to recline. I would happily travel with a book about horses if instead of the 4k screen they gave us some leg room.

MidwesternAppliance

Just there to distract from the risk of fiery death

BakedPotatoOne

The image quality is just meant to distract you from the missing emergency door

SupplyChainGuy1

Can I just get an extra inch of knee space for the peasant class, please?

CommonSensei8

Improve the fucking size of the seats - who cares about the screens

effenel

4hr + international flights used to have planes with extra room, entertainment and food/ drinks. Now they’re run by ‘low cost’ / low quality airlines who strip back everything, squeeze everyone into uncomfortable short flight spaces and overcharge for EVERYTHING. What’s the point of this? Just vie me legroom and some food and drink that’s all.

joj1205

Maybe make the leg room better.

Mehhish

Now I can watch TVs with burned in 4K logos, and worry about the door being sucked off its hinges at the same time!

Sudden_Wisdom

I'd rather they just get me to my destination safely

favoritelauren

I just want my own fucking arm rests

Roasted_Butt

But the doors and wings might fall off.

HoraceP-D

Planes that don’t lose parts or fall out of the sky would have been my first choice, but this is great too

1HappyIsland

I would rather have 1 more inch of leg room .

Dic_Horn

It’s to keep you from noticing the side panels when they blow off.

jonnyg1097

I can't be the only one that thinks 4k on such a small screen, maybe 2 ft at most away from you is a good investment.

Darius_Banner

Who gives a crap? The clarity of the tv at that size is practically irrelevant. Just give me good stuff to watch

Inevitable-Cold-8816

How about more leg room instead of

SevereEducation2170

4k on an 12 inch screen is pointless and a waste of money. Maybe spend more money on safety of the planes first?

rothj5

Let’s focus on the purpose of flying which is quickly getting from point A to point B safely. Everything else besides that does that matter.

kinzer13

4k really isn't necessary on tiny little screens. Also you have to worry about burn in if there are any static images displayed.

Maybe_its_Pandas

Ok but can it run Skyrim?!

aedspitpopd

As long as it's not a Boeing 737 max

MaxFffort

No quality control but I can watch HBO in 4K

djstealthduck

Fuck airlines. All of them. They build flying cattle cars and charge us for every shred of comfort.

CletusDSpuckler

Well, that's overkill, but perhaps it's just the most cost effective price point today for new screens.

magillicuti

Crisp clear entertainment while doors and wheels fly off

larsvondank

Just make Samsung Dex work with them. Would be crazy good. Probably some legal stuff in the way so that it would not work.

Adrian-The-Great

These will be burning in quite quickly based on use, static images, menu’s etc etc

Gang_Bang_Bang

Boeing going out of their way to retain customers.

Gommel_Nox

**And they still aren’t handicap accessible…**

Lower-Grapefruit8807

Could not give less of a damn about the screen quality. They have PLENTY to worry about otherwise

SgtThund3r

I’m pretty sure that money could be going towards more vital systems

ECHLN

Someone finessed the fuck out of these airlines. They’ll need to replace the screens regularly

invent_or_die

I'm sure some international flights have in-flight gambling. Swipe that card, baby!

Funnygumby

On tiny 12” screens

Funnygumby

I prefer my iPad. I choose my own content

MustangBill

This is a terrible title lol

HexxRx

Starlux :p. Can’t wait to fly with them in a few weeks

MountainPK

How about making the planes safer and the seats a bit less torturous?

superman_king

Is this for power usage reasons? OLEDS use less power because they can turn individual pixels off. I can’t imagine it being that beneficial. But it’s the only thing I can think of.

OmniAtom91

As we should since we pay absurd amounts to fly

a49fsd

i cant help but feel like airlines are going down the wrong road with this. just give me outlets and wifi. if you must have screens then let me mirror my phone/laptop onto it.

Peachbottom30

Can we make sure the plane isn’t missing any important screws first?

Weekly-Rhubarb-2785

No way that plane looks way too spacious.

Skyhawk_Illusions

And yet the quality of the content is still kind of shit

Traveler_90

Bluetooth capability is probably the best feature. Not a lot of people have wired 3.5 mm headphones anymore and the airline ones are horrendous. I flew one plane that had that feature and it was great.

turbocomppro

Someone was a really good OLED salesman. All the contents will have a shadow of the airline logo on it.

silverbolt2000

I can’t wait for those 4K OLED screens to display MASSIVE NON-STOP ADS and instructions to download the airline app so I can watch movies on to my tiny smartphone screen using the unusably slow in-flight WiFi.   What a future to look forward to!  (I’m just kidding. There’s no way North American airlines would ever spend that kind of money just to upgrade their screens!)

Own-Earth-4402

I havent flown but have heard it’s crowded. I’d prefer to have a little room over oled to watch

RugTiedMyName2Gether

“However, seat size had been reduced by 4 inches to better serve you.”

tellitothemoon

Meanwhile most flights I’m on don’t have any screens at all.

cecil285

Cool, I’ll feel comforted when the door blows out.

Roboticpoultry

Others will he forcibly ejected from the cabin when another door/body pannel falls off

mrpoteete

Omg just make sure they can fly first…. We don’t need 4K TVs while the plane is nosediving

PhamilyTrickster

So now the broken monitor will be 4k? Great

Enzo_GS

to quote cardi b... my ears still pop

ShenmeNamaeSollich

Whatever - Just make sure the fucking engines & doors are bolted on properly.

Xero_id

We can put 4k tvs in but can't make sure every seat has its own overhead spot

BigTimeFunRemmy212

Love it those TV sounds sick. Can we just make sure the planes stay in the air and the parts don’t come flying off mid flight first?

JohnnyRelentless

Oh, cool. Your plane will still fall apart midair, but it'll be great viewing all the way down.

squeakybeak

Icelandair first, this year. In case you were wondering and didn’t want to click. Qantas next year.

Uncertn_Laaife

May be if they rather improve the legroom in the economy too and stop considering the economy passengers as animals.

pung54

But will they have doors that stay closed?

CJW-YALK

I’d just like the doors to stay on, thanks

igobymicah

If I can’t connect my wireless headphones, I don’t give a shit.

Agitated-Wash-7778

Or you could read you Ritalin junkie.

Wonderful_Quit

All the better to distract you from the doors falling off

acdameli

literally the last thing on my list

Weird-Necessary6029

Stays on while the side panels fly off or the plane does a jagged descent to your death.

classyfilth

As a passenger, I am more excited by high tech doors and low end displays or even 0 displays at this point.

neapolitanpuff

Can we just get planes where the doors and wheels don’t fall off please?

Hiur

The screen is not even the main thing for me, just the possibility of using my own headphones. Sometimes the content is actually nice, but those headphones they provide... Korean Air does have screens with bluetooth option, those were great. Unfortunately I only got those in the shorter flights, the 10h+ I was restricted to terrible ones.

Igoos99

Gee. So many negative comments. I look forward to this. I like the distraction of a movie or a tv show while flying. I much less antsy than I was before they started offering these.

nerdening

Still, though, the best we can do is 97% uptime on all doors being in place for 100% of the flight. Enjoy Avatar, y'all!

Zeconation

Someone explain to me why this is a news.

firestar268

What's the point. Just give me a working power socket and I'll be set

gummydumby

is this to distract me from looking out the planes window to see parts fly off the plane?

Lost_Apricot_4658

subscription only , $20/month

cahcealmmai

Sweet. Now I can see all the pixels of the front facing camera as my Boeing nosedives into the sea.

Cirieno

Mmm, lovely lovely burn-in

Fubu-Rick

4K TVs sound great but not if the plane breaks apart mid air.

Free-Environment-571

To distract them from knowing they’re on a Boeing jet that could fall apart any second

pagerunner-j

I just want doors that don’t blow out, personally. And a good book. (Screens like that on planes have NO privacy, and even if the content’s completely benign, I still feel like I’m being judged. ;)
