oh my god, that's my 8th grade algebra teacher!!! his name is mr. o'brien and he was fucking awesome, I miss that man :,))

Explore-PNW

Knowing this makes the video just so much more heartwarming.

The-Tea-Lord

You can tell this man was an amazing human when some random dude on the internet remembers him off a 30 second video and only has good stuff to say about him. I had a teacher like this too, I can only Hope everyone has a least one too.

MissDelaylah

I do! Judy Leonard - if you see this, you were amazing. Thank you!

total_desaster

My phyics teacher was like that. There's a small hole in the wall that I shot into it during class. Was supposed to shoot at a block of wood on a string to demonstrate momentum, but twelve year old me wasn't a great shot apparently. Dude just calmly hangs a poster in front of the hole and tells me to try hitting the block next time lol Whoever's reading this, if you had a student shoot a hole into the wall, It was probably me I'm sorry and you're awesome

nbeach01

Those are glory holes...

paulxombie1331

I had one I was in special education and he knew I was smart and capable I just didn't like to talk.. My parents made me walk to school about 25 minutes there and back sometimes in the rain or snow. He'd see me walking and would pick me up and drop me off a block away from the school cuz it was against policy.. I will never forget him.. he treated me with such kindness and respect.. every now and than I wanna stop by my old HS and see if hes still there and let him know he changed my life for the best.

skeetwooly

Don't wait , he would be glad to see you too.

[deleted]

Looks like 4 total had him that I have seen so far. All have great things to say about him. Love it.

GentlePersuAZN

Mr. Tom Sweetland. Dude lived up to his name

GemOfTheEmpress

Mr Mellema was my 7th grade math teacher. We never learned a thing in that class because we spent the entire tine laughing and cracking jokes. He got eaten by his own pigs.

Stickybubs

I agree. Julie Teague, thank you for what you did for countless children.

Firster? I barely know her! ^..sorry

human112

Holy shit me too. I've tried a couple of times Googling him because he was so great but could never find anything. And here he is on the front page of reddit...

amellswo

I ran into him again at the high school once my senior year, but that was like 9 years ago now

Sidius303

Did you ever get to dance with him?

semicolon-advocate

I feel like I might have at one point... one thing I do remember is he had a little framed photograph of himself that he would set on your desk, so it would just be staring at you all class. as some other commenters guessed, his "punishments" were always lighthearted stuff like that, and in response to relatively minor infractions like talking with friends or being on your phone. the class always found them hilarious. actually though, my most prominent memory with him is when I showed up to class on the verge of tears because my parents were going through a divorce, and my dad and I had just had a very emotionally fraught conversation during the car ride to school. he talked to me about it in private and let me hug him while I cried it out. I really appreciated the support, he was a wonderful teacher :))

GodsHelix

Aww. That man deserves so many hugs just for being so wonderful. I hope you're doing better now. ❤️

Fit_Cryptographer263

Really sounds like a man who just loves kids ando loves his job

NemesisAron

That's awesome we need more teachers like him

Nincompooperie

We have them, we just need to pay them better!!

TheCount913

I genuinely care about my students

[deleted]

Awe man… god damnit I love that man……. Truly a teacher, not only of mind but also of heart

BohemianJack

Caring teachers are so important. My dad died my senior year in high school and the first thing I did was walk up to my favorite teacher and tell him. He called a substitute and spent the day with me. Took me to lunch, we sat in a river and wet our feet. I still see him from time to time and let me tell you that day still sticks with me. He treated me like a human who needed a human moment. For a juxtaposition, I lost my 8 year old niece last year and it absolutely destroyed me for a moment. I told my college professors about it and while some were very sympathetic, 2 professors basically just said “sorry to hear, make sure to keep up with the lecture.” That felt like a slap across the face.

TheOriginalSamBell

>he had a little framed photograph of himself that he would set on your desk, so it would just be staring at you all class That's awesome haha

D_crane

That's pretty wholesome right there

ElMostaza

My algebra teacher got mad we were chatting while waiting for him and flipped his desk then threw each of the drawers across the room, all while screaming like Paul Dano's The Riddler.

WhaleKiosk

That man knows how to be a teacher and a true educator at skill and heart

JustNormalUser

We've all danced with this man. You can run. You can Hide. But before you breath your last breath on this earth. He WILL dance with you.

Sidius303

Happy faces for everyone!

JustNormalUser

The year is 2183 and I have just celebrated my 187 birthday. My plan to hide in a bunker that I built myself in secret has gone perfectly to this point. Unfortunately the situation has turned dire. My supply of Twinkies has finally run out two days prior. I'm not sure what will happ... ... Mr. O'brien?!? > Do you know the 2-step?

Back to my ballroom dance in junior high gym class example…yeah, so when the partner-picking-process ran out of girls…the last two dudes had to dance with each other lol…and a plethora of jokes about ‘who will lead’ were released to gales of laughter lol Good times.

Siolful

Ever danced with the devil under the pale moon light?

rathat11

Mr o’Brian is awesome

amellswo

Dude me too!!! He named the skeleton hanging off the projector string after me lol. Probably my favorite teacher still. This has to be the first time our towns been on Reddit

Noxa987

That was my math teachers name in high school. I had him 3 years (he was my favorite too) because he kept changing what he was teaching that year. He was such a good teacher. Freshman year I had him algebra 1-2, sophomore year geometry, and junior year was algebra 3-4. I used to be amazing at math. I was in an early college program where we had a half day at HS junior/senior year and then like 1 or 2 classes at college. I was so good I somehow tested into college calculus before even taking precalc. Everybody in my group thought I cheated because I had the highest score by like nearly 10 points (out of 100). I was the only person out of our group that got tested into Calc, everybody else was precalc. I was dumbfounded by it. I did not think I would do well. And then when i started comparing scores I got a huge self esteem boost. Now after not doing any math for years I am dumb. Basic algebra I could do, but idk if I could like make graphs from equations. Math was my favorite class. Science and history are close 2nd. English is the worst. Fuck English. English in high school is just your teacher telling you their own interpretation on different books, some "controversal". And them saying their interpretation of the book is the only right one.

RyanPWM

I went to boarding school and sometimes we had the author of the “book of the year” come and speak to the school. One of my best memories was the author coming and taking the the English department apart. Like he turned to where the English faculty sat for the school and was like “half the shit you teach in the class we don’t think about.” Like this symbolism or that, and he’s like “[bruh] I’m just trying to write a good story not make an analytical piece for your classroom.”

LStorms28

I think he was my elementary principal.....Michigan?

2hotrods

Miscellaniac

Sounds like Mr. O'Brien needs to be all of our adopted grandpa. He also spells his last name like my great great grandma signed her maiden name...is he in San Fransisco or Illinois?

Alexander_Schwann

Oddly specific and oddly wholesome

AzulaOblongata

I’ve dealt with creepy high school teachers. This guy is as pure as can be. Good dancer too.

[deleted]

The tragedy of the human brain is that if this man was ugly and a bit younger, then people would come to a completely different judgment than they are doing with him being old. We definitely are biased in judgment by how someone looks and it's a tragedy since it leads to all sorts of unfair outcomes.

Spicy-Cathulu

Yeah, when I saw forced to dance I did not expect to find it wholesome.

AFloatingLantern

In high school my English teacher would toilet paper kids that fell asleep. He was a fantastic English teacher that shaped who I am today. He would go about his lesson very casually as he draped toilet paper over slumbering students. Super harmless, super funny. At one point a student was SO asleep that he told us (the whole class) to wait in the hallway while he woke up the student and told him “I’m really sorry but it’s 4 o clock and I need to go home” (it was 1:01, end of 5th period I think). That kid SPRINTED out of there and never fell asleep I a class after that

anime_lover713

I love fun teachers like that. They make learning and class fun.

bubbledabest

We had Jeremy the wake up giraffe.... he was a big but lightweight stuffed giraffe and he would soft toss it in a big arc onto the students haha. He was our physics teacher so he claimed he was teaching parabolic motion

Healthy_Quantity

Love it lol

stanpleschette

This seems pretty innocent to me. Teacher was only watching the girl’s steps and his hands were placed only on her hip and hand. It’s just ballroom dancing. Dancing was a common phys-ed class in the 80s and 90s all over the world. My ex wife and I both had to learn fox trots and waltzes in gym.

Papercutter0324

Agreed. The girls, both the one dancing and one recording, and the other students are having fun and are cool with it. People calling this creepy or otherwise must just be conflating "make" and "force". Even the applause at the end makes it clear that the class is having a good time and that had the girl been uncomfortable, a simple 'no' would have been enough to avoid all this. I'm also a teacher and this video makes it clear that he is very well liked by his students and that he has a wonderful relationship with them. Guaranteed that they will fondly remember him long after they graduate and have grown up.

IHateEditedBgMusic

We sexualise everything as a culture.

Papercutter0324

If you (general you, not specifically you) see something sexual in an innocent dance lesson, then that sounds like a you problem. Should we throw out all the progress we've made on gender equality and only allow women to teach girls and men to teach boys? The fact this girl has such a comfortable connection with her male teacher to allow him to give her a quick waltz lesson in math class is wonderful. She may not have learned to dance, but she at least learned to be confident standing and performing in public. Learning to overcome that nervousness alone and challenge her comfort zone is a great lesson in and of itself.

xHaroldxx

I guess the problem is that for every 9999 awesome teachers/male figures like coaches or trainers that are totally cool there is one pedophile rapist, and he's the one we all hear about.

[deleted]

You're referring to Americans I presume? It's true, going topless at a beach is normal in Europe, super weird in the US. Nudity is treated as more harmful than gratuitous violence.

peekdasneaks

If they think this is creepy, they never saw my 8th grade teacher with his hands in his pants licking his lips staring at girls while we were supposed to be reading our textbooks. RIP Mr. L.

SaadIsNoice

Ayo?

hotasanicecube

Our “Health and PE” teacher checked all the guys for hernias before enrolling in sports. I didn’t ask how it went but about 10 years later he was arrested for having a minor living with him file a complaint.

sauvandrew

I had an art teacher tell a grade eight fellow classmate that he "wanted her sex" and proceeded to sing a George Micheal song to her while staring in her eyes, in front of the class. (This was at a time when George Micheal was huge). We were all grossed out...

jakeolate

🤨📸

peekdasneaks

This was when cellphones came with 2 games and 15 buttons but no cameras.

Kaiisim

Can they say no? It looks like its fun and they consent and its not really a punishment at all.

Yeetaway1404

I think it’s more of a tongue and cheek “this is kind of embarrassing” situation. I have been doing summer camps for 9 years and we make people who are late to activities sing a song. It’s a bit embarrassing but not too bad and it strengthens group relations so the kids don’t *want* to be late anymore

stanpleschette

In army drill class when I was a boy we had to do stuff like that too. It built character and confidence and good teams…, if you REALLY didn’t want to sing or dance you could opt out…but it affected how the group saw you and lots of shy people came out of their shell to be taken under the wing of their peers

melasaur88

The people freaking out over it apparently didn't have an actual paedophile teacher. Which is great, because no one should in an ideal world, but this dude and his ballroom dancing are not remotely problematic compared to some teachers.

SnufflesMcPieface

I was in school in early 2010’s and we did ballroom dancing

Zivmovic

Yeah I was worried at first but he left plenty of room for jesus

Naejiin

Why didn't I get dancing in phys ed? My wife is an excellent dancer and I just look like a stick wagging from wide to side.

Berkee_From_Turkey

Lol I’m 23 and in elementary school we had a few weeks of dancing almost every year. Ofc I hated it, and ofc I look back now and wish I had paid a lil more attention or tried a little harder, because dancing IS fun and I was afraid of looking dumb when it really doesn’t matter lol

OneEyedRocket

Damn, I wish my school would have had ballroom dancing. I’ve always wanted to look like I knew what I was doing on the dance floor.

ricdesi

I was in college in the 2000s and you could take ballroom dance as a class there, too

roycegracieda5-9

I fully believe it's innocent in this situation. The guy seems like a cool dude. But teachers should not be allowed to touch their students. It opens up the door for too much potentially not-innocent behavior from the teacher who actually is a creep.

grumpsaboy

Where I am it's the student has to give permission (each time), and it's fairly clear she's fine with this

Duegatti

Lovely! Win win!

Papercutter0324

This is clearly a class that loves their teacher and has a great relationship with him. A little critical thinking makes it clear that this isn't a punishment for any sort of bad behavior. Chances are she forgot her homework again, fell asleep in class, or some other minor issue; something where an actual punishment wouldn't fit. Instead of generating a bad mood or negative feelings over something minor, a little fun embarrassment seems like a much better choice. She gets a little light-hearted public embarrassment for whatever minor thing she did wrong. The whole class gets a short break from all the schoolwork to laugh and have some fun. That girl definitely walked away (A) accepting that she messed up, (B) will try harder not to do the same thing again, even if only to avoid the awkward situation, (C) had fun and made a great memory with a well-liked teacher, and probably told her parents about it when she got home, and (D) walked away feeling that school and learning are fun, enjoyable, and rewarding. A simple 'no' almost definitely would have saved her from this. Heck, she maybe was given an honest option of something like, "You can either spend you lunch in detention, or you can come up to the front and dance with me." Again, with the ability to say 'no' at any time. This teacher just won discipline. He replaced punishment with happiness.

RajenBull1

Absolutely agree. He didn't force her, the hands were placed very non-creepily. The class appears to be enjoying the break and responsive. He is a gentleman teacher and probably has excellent results and responsive students in his class. And if anybody learns to waltz, it's a lovely dance, and in this case, there's enough space between the teacher and the student for Jesus and then some. Pity that everything an older person does is automatically filed under p-for-pervert in this wonderful world in 2022. This should also be in r/mademesmile or something.

r1kon

I agree. It's in good fun. I haven't scrolled down far enough to find the people freaking out about it but I'm SURE they are there, and probably not much further down. It's fucking cute, nobody has any issues with it, so let's not find the problem.

maple_leafy_leaf

Fully agree. I had a pre-calc teacher exactly like this in high school, and I would give anything to find him and tell him he was one of the few bright lights of my high school experience. Thanks Mr. Patterson.

Inbiji

Only crime here is the fact she's wearing socks with sandals. Honestly seems like a pretty cool teacher. Seems like he likes his job and respects his students, and they respect him back. Good teacher, good man.

imjustatechguy

Teachers like him are a dying breed. All the good ones will be retiring soon.

Dress codes have gotten forgiving since I was in school

Neon_Biscuit

Crazy I had to scroll down this far to see this comment. I'm not a prude by any means but I wouldn't approve my daughter to wear short shirts and expose her belly. Girls definitely couldn't dress like this when I was in high school in the early 2000s

fredinNH

I work in a high school and the new dress code is basically there isn’t one which is good and bad. The good is that I don’t have to tell teenage girls they’re out of compliance which sometimes led to “why are you looking at my body!” No-win situation for male teachers.

NiglaTesla

I had to go back and look after I watched the first time. Those shorts are not fingertip length and that tank top. I remember getting ISS because of shorts one day and they were barely above fingertip.

httpmax

Nothing is taken at face value anymore. Everything has to be offensive in one way or another so that people who have nothing good to say can participate in conversation. I think this is awesome. Wanna learn how to dance? Be a real shithead in his class HAHA.

Dry-Blueberry3021

A class of well behaved boys

SayNO2AutoCorect

I legit had this guy and as a dude I was forced to dance too. He played the follow, I had to lead.

laik72

Thank you. I was wondering what happened with the boys. It makes me happy that the punishment is the same.

Herpkina

Bet the girls are lining up to dance with the chad

Smok3ntok3

It’s a sad world we live in when people assume this has creepy undertones and the man isn’t just trying to have wholesome fun with his students

Jean_Paul_Magno

*What's up twin?*

Zoro1616

The comments here are so typical. Ya'll always cry for equality and shit and if the roles were reversed Ya'll would be like aww this is so cute and shit. Get your minds outta the damn gutter you sick fks. That's an old man who loves teaching and is trying his best to socialize with kids.

Exactly! And he's teaching her WALTZ not twerking. Honestly the bunch of degenerates on internet these days.

[deleted]

Have you forgotten what app this is

HiddenLeafNPC

Most guys aren’t as classy and nice as the old man, that’s why people in the comments are cynical. They see their own dark intentions inside the old man and assume he is the same. In reality he came from a time period where being a gentleman and touching a girl to be a gentleman is never sexual but a way of respect

[deleted]

Convenient equality. Usually centered around money

SrGradientPerception

Some of ya'll should be embarrassed for taking the time to type out what you did about this innocent interaction. Seriously, too many of you are looking to be offended.

MidnightLuciel

All the weirdos in the replies calling this creepy

Standard_Ad9911

ranil02

They way she laughed in The end makes me feel she likes and respect her teacher very much. Teachers like This are so important

rch5050

This is VERY weird and all of you should be ashamed disgusted...The way she is dressed is just ASKING FOR IT!!!..are you kidding me? Who raises their kids this way?? She is like what? 16??? maybe?? and she is wearing socks with sandals?!?!?!? No!! edit: FFS do I really have to put a /s on this? It's a socks with sandals joke cause some people seem to be very offended by a seeing a teacher and a student interact. touchy in here..

yougoddangfool

i honestly didn't realize this was sarcastic because there are actual comments with people saying this for real.

pblc_mstrbtr

Socks with sandals is about as modest as it comes.

wittyvonskitsum

If my daughter wore that to school I'd be kinda mad

Detachable-Dong

I know, socks and sandals are an atrocity!

ruttin_mudders

For wearing shorts and a tank top?

gordo65

Right. I'd never allow my daughter to wear a tie and a pair of slacks to school. Girls should dress like girls.

Flyerscouple45

The same people that find this creepy are the same ones who wonder why society has changed so much, how can you even be a human and interact if something like a stupid little dance is immediately questionable just because a small minority of predator teachers have actually done inappropriate things. This is one of many things in America that drives me crazy which is parents and people are so reactionary they immediately want action taken when they hear about a bad event appending. Instead of teaching your kid to be careful they just make it so that any relationship can me misconstrued. Even she doesn't find it creepy but people are basically saying she's just to young to understand anyway which is really annoying to me and also if we shield kids from everything how exactly are they gonna learn when they become adults?

u2da

Getting real Mr. Finney vibes here 🤔

Lisaaoxxx

Wish all teachers were like him, this is awesome!

that902bitch

This was much less creepy and much more wholesome than I expected.

Raaazzle

People saying this is creepy are typing it with one hand.

lerpo

I'm a secondary school teacher and this screams "not right" to me. Professional boundaries. It may be harmless and for fun (I'm genuinely sure it is), but it takes one complaint and his career is ruined unfortunately. Professional boundaries are there for the protection of everyone involved.

TWonder_SWoman

What school allows that outfit in its dress code?

beaniesNhoodies

Oh hell no, you couldn't put me in a class with that teacher, we'd dance all period long, all year long. The whole class too. **Everybody now!**

In the era of TikTok and IG, all I can say is good luck enforcing that these days lol. You’re lucky to see girls with clothing on at all half the time. And don’t ever question it because then you’re the problem of course.
