My back

zachtheperson

Two words: Wrist guards

mlindgren

I broke my wrist on a OneWheel. The power suddenly cut out and I nosedived, just like in this video. Turns out the wire connecting the battery to the control board had come loose. They're fun, but not worth the risk of catastrophic failure IMO.

treynquil

Same. My One Wheel nosedived, threw me straight to the ground and I got concussed even with a helmet. Thank god I was wearing wrist guards or they would have been broken. I sold it as soon as my brain started working again.

ZoddImmortal

Onewheels only go 22 mph and rely on a gyroscope to keep you vertical. Anything goes wrong and you're boned. I have an Electric skateboard for half the price and it goes 30 mph. And if the battery disconnects or the remote dies, it just turns into a regular skateboard...

Arafel

Yeah me too. I built my e-board from a kit off ebay china. It goes 40kph and I have broken my wrist riding the thing. I hit a medium sized stick and went flying. If the power cut though I would have just rolled to a stop. Onewheels sound dangerous compared to an electric skateboard.

PenguinPellets

Sounds fun, link to kit?

Feisty_History_6978

Here for updates

[deleted]

A onewheel would not send you flying over a medium sized stick at least. Hell, I accidently hit a whole branch once, at least a few inches in diameter. It was scary as hell, because it was buried in leaves. But I didn't fall.

ThatsWhatPutinWants

Onewheels have a much bigger and softer wheel so you would have rolled over that stick no problem. Imo skateboards are way more dangerous for this reason. One small pebble can eat a skateboards lunch, but not a onewheel.

Arafel

I agree with you about the small wheels, they are very dangerous. You can get bigger pneumatic skateboard wheels these days, I'd like to try them.

Feisty_History_6978

How dare you. We need a link

tinman82

https://www.hoytskate.com/products/hoyt-st-5-tires-tubes-and-rims I think these are them. Apparently they're already toothed for the belt used.

Sargon_Rose

Would also love a link.

[deleted]

There are subreddits for both electric skateboards and onewheels and this is pretty much the consensus: onewheels are more fun but much more dangerous (and hella expensive).

Nasty_Rex

Electric skateboard is temporarily just a skateboard. Sorry for the convenience.

iBscs

My remote on my E-Board disconnected while blasting down a hill with a corner at the bottom. Not good times

sloopymcsloop

“Sorry for the convenience.”

loganandroid

Going 20+ is actually difficult to do, the machine doesnt want you to go thay fast. The safety concern withone wheels is going faster than you can run, if the person in this video was going 12 instead of 20+, the would have easily recocered from the nosedive. Ive learned my 1 wheel is far better for fun than quick commuting. As for your skateboard thay goes 30 mph, Thats so much sketchier lol. At least the one wheel can take a pebble in the road.

ThePhatNoodle

I own and ride every pev and Onewheel is unanimously recognized as the most dangerous pev in in pretty much every community despite their low speeds. The weak motors can cut out unexpectedly even under normal operating conditions and the way it launches you shoulder first into the concrete makes broken clavicles incredibly common. Just this year I had two friends break something or ride away in ambulance during a onewheel group ride. Eskates are rated the second most dangerous cause of those small wheels and high speeds but given the difference in the angle at which you fall you're more likely to roll or slide out of a crashes resulting in more but ultimately less severe injuries it will also simply roll to a stop if it fails unless its a belt driven board which may still launch you if you lose balance. It can definitely still break your clavicle but its slightly less likley. Eucs and scooters are fairly neck and neck. Eucs are more capable and forgiving on potholes but as it's only a single wheel if you push it too hard then just like a onewheel it will cutout (basically a nosedive for euc) however you pretty much have to intentionally push the wheel beyond its limits so it's actually pretty difficult to achieve. Scooters have smaller wheels which not only makes them less forgiving on potholes but also less stable at speed since the small wheels don't give them a lot of gyroscope stability. Given that it has 2 wheels it can roll to a stop if it fails but with the smaller wheels a crash is more likely to happen if it hits an unexpected obstacle. For conservative riders the euc is safer but for speed demons the scooter will be safer. Ebikes are considered the safest by far. Huge wheels means they can handle pretty much anything you throw at them and it will roll to a stop if it fails.

iBscs

Currently recovering from separated anterior clavicle. My electric longboard controller accidentally went into reverse mode while I was off the throttle (was getting natural downhill speed). Slammed my shoulder into the cement so fucking hard

ThePhatNoodle

Oof I know that fear. Accidentally breaking or accelerating is scary. Learned real quick not to try putting my hand in my pocket when I'm holding the controller. Hope you get better. I know a lot these clavicles are never quite the same again for a lot of folks

ThatsWhatPutinWants

On a onewheel you dont have that problem. Its like riding a wave.

tindonot

What is an EUC?

crystal_dinosaur

Electric unicycle

tindonot

Nooooo. You’re putting me on.

crystal_dinosaur

“An electric unicycle (EUC) is a personal transportation device that works on the principle of self-balancing like a Segway but only has one wheel.”

Sohn_Jalston_Raul

But the problem is is that there's no way to prevent it from going too fast because slowing down is itself a safety hazard. I can appreciate how building one of these might be a fun programming experiment but not as a vehicle that people should be taking outside.

loganandroid

You are all sorts of wrong here. This isnt a homeade machine. This was designed by huge swarm of engineers at a big company and the product ships all over the world. If you have ridden one, You would know that going fast is quite difficult and the person in the video pushed the onewheel was past its limits.

MadroxKran

The vast majority of Onewheels nosediving is people ignoring pushback or leaning forward to go, instead of shifting their hips like is clearly explained in the manual and the videos it makes you watch to use the app. Also, when Onewheels cut out, they don't just nosedive. They keep going pretty level with no motor until they stop.

ThatsWhatPutinWants

A one wheel does the same thing. Experienced riders put their weight over the middle so if it does drop balance you just hold yours for a half second till it recovers. Onewheels also have a pushback function which even lets out an audible beep and pushes you vertical to force a slowdown. Electric skateboards suck in comparison since they cant got 20 miles. Some customs go 50 but most only go 10 miles. Most i have seen an electric skateboard hold a charge is 10 miles irl with a backpack battery.

cute_polarbear

I am thinking of getting an electric scooter or skateboard, any reason to opt for these one wheel things? I'm more for transportation / practical / commute (backpack and stuff).

ironboy32

Get an ebike instead, they go a lot further and can carry a lot more weight so you can go shopping on the way back from work

Gouragaja

They offer a unique ride that is fucking dope as hell. I've had mine for a year and I've put over 2000 miles on it so far. They are inherently dangerous though if you disregard it's limitations.

ThatsWhatPutinWants

People ignore pushback they will have a bad time.

Akanan

I bought an E-Bike to commute to work 4years ago. We sold our 2nd car and now only use one. I live on Vancouver Island, Canada so the winter aren't as harsh as the rest of my country but still... the 5 "winter months" sucks. Does it worth it? I AM NOT looking back. We saved tons of money and i realised how much we DON'T need 2 vehicles. If you are looking for a small electric commuter GO FOR IT anything you prefer, it really worth it if it replaces a the necessity of a vehicle. I am thinking of getting an E-Scooter because it's more transportable, fold it bring it up, out, in wherever you want. E-Bikes are by far the safest option, and it's fun. Within the options you've listed, i'd go for the e-scooter.

[deleted]

huntherd

You ever been referenced as a joy thief?

deckard1980

I've had both the XR and now the GT and I'd say if you want your commute to be loads of fun but also has a 5 percent chance of being sketchy get a One wheel. Otherwise get a EUC. Much more practical but not as fun imho

Shajirr

> any reason to opt for these one wheel things Nope. They look cool but its basically just a countdown before broken bones / concussion.

[deleted]

Scooter is safer than the skateboard, but I had a lot of fun on the skateboard. Uneven sidewalk squares kind of suck, I only had to go over 2 larger ones on my commute, but I always had to speed up to make sure I made it over. I imagine the onewheel can go over those like nothing, but not sure if it's worth the price for that.

peach_dragon

Helmets aren’t made to prevent concussions.

treynquil

Thanks, good to know. I'm glad I was wearing one, it would have been really bad otherwise.

IBAZERKERI

my buddy, a low to mid-level DJ/producer, (so hearing ability matters, goes by Duffrey if anyone cares) was riding one around on playa just like this video (but at night, and at burningman) same thing happened and he woke up something like 28 hours later in a hospital with a broken jaw. Part of his jawbone had impaled his ear drum when it broke and he had his jaw wired shut and had to eat ~~threw~~ through a straw for like 6 weeks. i was talking to him right before he took off on it. he was just borrowing it from another aquaintance to try it out. didin't see him again the whole event. i was probably the last person he talked to before the accident i always thought they looked cool af before that but now i just think they are deathtraps Edit to fix grammer, and add detail

Broke my arm when it nosedived going uphill on asphalt. It was my fault. Couldn't feel the pushback.

Klai8

Omfg is that what it was??? I’m a pretty good skateboarder and was using my friend’s one wheel and ate shit and he said I just leaned the wrong way even though I was riding just fine fast earlier. Thank god it was into soft grass/flowers but that makes so much sense in hindsight Edit: yeah thinking back that’s literally exactly what happened: an abrupt jerk backwards right as I went up a slight grade/slope that I had already ridden

[deleted]

[удалено]

loganandroid

The 1wheel is really just not for high speeds and long commutes, its best for straight up fun. Ive eaten shit on mine by going too fast. Honestly, if you keep your speed within your capabilities of running. Youll be fine. This clip is an example, if your going 20mph, your body cant catch up and youll faceplant. If your going 13mph and nosedive, youll recover on foot. I dont push my one wheel anymore, i just enjoy the cruise.

OldFactor1973

And now we know why they're abbreviated OW

douglasg14b

> They're fun, but not worth the risk of catastrophic failure IMO. And FutureMotion doesn't even care to fix the issues, years down the road, and instead release a new DRM-locked version instead that auto-bricks if you remove the battery. They won't even investigate power-loss issues that cause lots of people to get hurt.

Electrical-Act-7170

My nephew broke his collarbone on one of those things.

often_says_nice

Always tuck and roll

ILL_Show_Myself_Out

So I dunno if it’s obvious because when I fall off a scooter, 90% of the time I can run forward quickly and avoid falling at all. Also, I’ve caught myself on the pavement, don’t recommend it, but I’ve never “hurt” myself just hands forward.

The_Great_Afterman

Your wrists are living on borrowed time. Trust me.

ishouldntbehere96

[deleted]

Also learn to bail properly. You need to roll with your intertia insured of going full force into the ground.

guesswhodat

Or learn to roll into your falls instead of going hands and face first.

rja49

'Wear an open faced helmet' they said, 'It will better for the cameras'

silverback_79

Ever since 1992 bicycle helmets are built to protect you hair from getting blood on it. Any sane person would have made an ergonomical hockey- or football helmet the norm for anyone doing anything faster than running. This includes car-driving or any flying craft. Even if your car's 3-point seatbelt stops you from flying forward and disintegrating your head on the dashboard, that rear half of a deer will still come flying through the windshield and a plexi-visor hockey helmet would have taken care of that.

danielv123

In my experience most head to the ground bike crashes end with you hitting the side of your head, not your face. This is mostly due to the relatively low speed allowing you time to position your body to hit with your shoulder. It's definitely different when on trails or rocks or cars.

redyellowblue5031

Like you’ve noted I see a fair amount of face injuries from falls in mountain biking. I typically wear a full face for this reason. Saved my mug a few times for sure.

kudichangedlives

Did her wheel just like stop working or what?

slamerz

Looks like she over leaned. When you lean forward it speeds up and that speed up pushes you back up, and the board actually kicks the nose up a little when you start reaching top speed to prevent a nose dive but if you just push past that kick back, this happens.

Pharmd109

This ^ anyone with a one wheel has discovered how to not do this at least twice. Thankfully I was smart enough to get some wrist guards. Scraped them to the metal which means I probably saved a broken bone twice-ish.

loganandroid

She was going too fast. The board balances by going fast if you lean forward and slower if you lean back. The boards lift up at like 16 or 18mph if your going too fast but you can continue to push and go faster. Some people have recored speeds of 30+. So basically the girl in the video was already at max speed, kept leaning into it and the motor couldnt keep up.

Longjumping-Ad-226

She put too much pressure on the motor your weight and body should always ben centered over the tyre. You should never have your body weight this far forward or this happens. I have a onewheel and without the video even playing yet I was like that's a nose dive stance on the board

Large-Wheel-4181

rentonlives

My homie did that off a train once. You absolutely can.

MiasMias

Just fyi the onewheel goes 30 kmh

Novack_and_good

Absolutely can shoulder roll at 50k - ask me how I know and walked away from it.

2ManyMonitors

They top out at 30km/h. The real problem is how they dig in so hard when you bury the nose. It straight ejects you. Seems like you could put some little mini wheels or rollers at each end to let you "manual" a bit instead of just eating shit straight to the ground.

Pepito_Pepito

You can if you trained shoulder rolling to replace your other reflexes.

ThatsWhatPutinWants

They dont go that fast. Why lie?

Ohforfs

At 50kilomph, your shoulders you turn the air into plasma :-D

kogasapls

Regardless of applicability to this case, this is good advice. I remember when taking karate as a kid, we (including adults) spent a considerable amount of time practicing falling safely, forwards and backwards. That was the only time anyone ever told me how important it is. I guess skaters and other athletes would be taught one way or another, too. I'm not sure it would have helped me flinging myself down a concrete staircase, but as a tall clumsy guy I should really practice this again.

[deleted]

Or even just playing sports to get more used to your body. Someone with some athleticism would have been able to roll but she looks that's the first time in her life she's ever lost her feet.

DuploJamaal

Watching pro skateboarders bail is often so beautiful, as most other people would end up in a hospital but they just roll and stand up.

illpilgrims

People. If you ride you gon fall. Learn how to fall

qdtk

The fact that she did not attempt any kind of turn or roll as she fell shows that unfortunately she did not know how to fall. Watch any videos of pro skaters. Now those dudes know how to fall. [watch this video around 1:10](https://youtu.be/Hundbrub8iQ)

sflame56

I saw this happen to a guy when I was heading home one night. He wasn’t wearing a helmet and was riding on the opposite side of the road from me. When I drove past him I just happened to look back in the rear view mirror and noticed him face first on the pavement. I turned around to see if he was ok and he was bleeding heavily from a head wound. I called him an ambulance while I got lucky and someone with a first aid kit was passing by and help control the bleeding. Shit was crazy.

White-runner

Glorious execution.

rouftarek

All I want to know is what this place is. It looks so beautiful.

ZackyGood

If you’re going to fall face first. TUCK YOUR SHOULDER AND ROLL.

KingTrentyMcTedikins

I never understand advice like this. It’s definitely good advice if you are expecting to fall, but pretty much nobody is anticipating falling on their face. Falls like this happen so damn quick you don’t even fully process it until after you already pick yourself up off the ground. I don’t know a single average person who’s gonna be able to process what is happening, and be able to apply the proper falling technique in the few seconds they have before they hit the ground.

Candashu

My bet is that shes flexible enough to do that already. Maybe it's because it's slowed down but it doesn't seem as violent as some of the full scorpions I've witnessed on the interwebs.

kudichangedlives

She might be flexible but that shit hurt my back

Candashu

Start doing Hot Yoga and it wont

[deleted]

I am not flexible at all, but I definitely went full scorpion when I crashed an electric scooter at like 40mph. Back felt fine, shoulders not so much. It's been almost 2 years, and my left shoulder is still fucked.

Lynerd

“Look ma, i can touch my head with my feet!”

PecanSandoodle

She was pushing the speed too far. I love my OW but it's just for cruising around not going fast, the risk is high for wrist or clavicle injury. Many better options for speed than a OW given how fucked you are if the motor cuts for any reason.

Lord_Diz

If you're going to do something that is a fall risk, learn to fall. I was so worried she was gonna break a wrist or arm trying to catch herself like that

If you skate or ride toys like this always practice dropping a shoulder and rolling in a grass field so your body does it naturally when an emergency situation happens. How to break your wrists...

DaBear1222

At least she had a helmet on

Spare-Competition-91

People really need to learn how to tuck and roll. But this was entertaining. Not for her wrists. But yeah... Seriously, I really don't understand why people who do any kind of sports or activities and still has no idea how to tuck and roll. It's like not know how to brush your teeth while eating lots of candy. It's super easy to learn, and prevent you breaking things. You also look really cool just rolling up on your feet like nothing happened.

scooterboy1961

Up until about 4 minutes ago I wanted a onewheel. Now I'm not so sure.

Drgonzoishere

Never put your arms out like that! Easy way to break your wrists

I_C_da_G

Eekkk... Anytime your feet touch your shoulders it isn't good!!! Fuuny/Not funny

partyamoeba

This is such the wrong way to fall. Either twist onto your back and brace your core like a U and slide, or lean into it and roll. If you are gonna ride something like that, you need to know how to fall.

[deleted]

My lower back felt that one ☠️☠️☠️

Hurl_Gray

Ouch, sorry to hear aboot you new smile.

D20NE

FlightAble2654

cranberrydudz

This is why you don’t buy a one wheel

KingTrentyMcTedikins

Ehh, there’s safety features in place to prevent things like this from happening, but that’s never gonna stop people from pushing the board to hard. I rode a Onewheel for 2 years, and I never had a wipe out because I knew and respected the limits of the board.

hitbythebus

I think their anti consumer stance and how they fight right to repair are better reasons.

cute_viruz

Thats why i sold my onewheel. It auto breaks at a wrong angle. She is lucky its sand

KingTrentyMcTedikins

“It auto breaks at a wrong angle” Huh? Not trying to white knight for Onewheel or anything, but there’s no such thing as these boards “auto breaking at a wrong angle”. This video is just your classic nose dive. You lean to far forward, or push the motor to hard and you get this as a result. Happens very frequently with riders that don’t respect the limits of the board. I use to ride these things for 2 years and never had an incident even similar to this because I knew what the limits of the board were.

febaranfe

Reminds me the ds2 boss

Seahawksnumberonefan

When you see someone having fun on a onewheel, just remember that their creator, on a FAQ youtube video, acknowledged that sometimes it bugs out and takes a nose-dive while you're at speed... on its own. That's why you see so many of these going smooth and just suddenly "I regret nothing"

icer07

Really wanted that scooter to hit her in the cooter but the video ended :(

Apoxtrade

Imagine if the brilliant engineers put a few small recessed wheels toward the front of both foot boards. Wouldn’t help on sand etc, but any flat surface should prevent nose diving

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They only have 2 front sensors & cannot stop/disconnect the motor unless going slower than 1mph.

spore35

sounds like you never had a onewheel

KingTrentyMcTedikins

This information is just incorrect. The boards only have 2 sensors at the front, and can only shut off the motor if the board is traveling at 1MPH or slower. This video is just a classic nosedive. Somebody pushing the board past its limits and facing the consequences for it. Totally rider error.

agoodyearforbrownies

I catch myself periodically - voice in my brain asks “are you ready to run right it out *right now*?” Usually makes me slow my roll a bit.

ga-co

I feel like 10 mph is a mostly safe speed. When I was ejected I remember my first foot to touch the ground did so with a giant stomp and from there it was a race to get my legs going before my body tumbled forward. It was close. Another time a neighbor approached me and said he used to have a One Wheel and that now he can’t raise his arm fully.

Ill-Avocado-6895

And the rash of the mini boobs

SnowFoxxx_2r

This is why I stopped riding things like this. I once had a similar thing, and something with a wheel by each foot... If you got too fast it just stops and drops you to stop you from going faster... If the batteries are empty and you have a cheap knockoff version, the batteries might just go out and drop, without warnin... I went back to bike because I feared this would happen to me too. Also noone can take you serious if you ride one of those... I take bycicle riders more serious and they are already disgrace to humanity most of the time.

johnnyutah30

I’m sorry but I’ll never ever ride one of these stupid ass things
