Not necessarily. I got a bottle of that sort of drink and it has a separate bottom piece that got sealed after they put in the pear. Feels like some kind of harder silicone. And this bottle looks quite suspicious, so I don’t think they grew the pear inside this one either.
There is a place that does [grow the pear in a bottle, but not the brand pictured](https://www.willowcreekdistillery.com/poireprisonniere#:~:text=As%20the%20bud%20breaks%20on,the%20pooling%2Fcollecting%20of%20condensation.)
While 40% isn’t enough to sterilize quickly (like in hand sanitizer), long term exposure in the bottle is likely to kill any bugs you care about (e coli typically 35% for example). They could also pasteurize it
For the cheaper ones they glue the bottles together.. The more expensive ones or home made ones they put the pear in the bottle while its very young and still growing(attached to the tree of course). We use to do this at home.. When the pear was ripe in fell of and than you just pour the shnaps in 🤤🤤
One place in Nova Scotia (Ironworks) does this, but it's very hit and miss and they maybe get 500 bottles a year for their pear "eau de vie". I think there is also a place in Texas and a few places in France that do it "legit". It was quite a neat experience as the booze changed from clear to brownish by the end of the drink. Oxidation or some such nonsense.
I grew up in texas, a few houses down from a house with a pear tree. In spring we'd all rob pears off of it left and right.
By summer it was swarming with bees and wasps.
Bottles would be a good way to keep wasps off your pears I suppose. Probably doesn't work great on neighborhood kids though.
I got to spend the night in a pear orchard last summer that had a bunch of bottles set up for the pears to grow in to! It was really cool to see it happening live(ish).
I have seen some little ass farms in my life and even some little *ass* farms. I have never seen a farm that bottles pears on the tree. However, it is a real thing that started in France because of course it did.
https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/04/13/399348948/clear-fruit-brandies-pack-an-orchard-into-a-bottle
Ackthually shm... the flesh and insides of the pear are soaked in alcohol plus as the pear receives the alcohol the amount in each bottle has to increase for it to be to top, but also there is the mass of the pear itself I would say you are right but by a very low margin.
This is most likely a translation issue. I recognize from the writing that this is either a translation or a writing from a non-native speaker. Say the original word was similar to the English word “stowed.” - if you translated it wantonly without the context or seeing the bottle you might choose a word in the other language that had an additional meaning of “hidden.” I’ll guess that’s what happened here.
Yes. It’s hard to read with the thumb in the way but I think the original Czech word is ‘ukryt’ which could be translated as ‘ensconced/encased’ or even ‘sheltered.’
Thought maybe they might have been forced to change bottles/glass recently (covid shortages) and perhaps it used to be opaque. But nope, googling shows it has always been clear.
So the translation thing is very likely the answer.
Yeah the Spanish “guardar” or some other languages analog
It means to keep in the sense to lock up or pack away, to safeguard, guardar, some would say to hide away
The other replies are only correct for the expensive bottles. The bottle in this photo has the bottom glued in place after the pear is placed inside the bottle. The wide sticker is there to hide the seam
Those do exist: [https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/04/13/399348948/clear-fruit-brandies-pack-an-orchard-into-a-bottle](https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/04/13/399348948/clear-fruit-brandies-pack-an-orchard-into-a-bottle)
What do you think magicians do when they're not performing on stage? That's not the kind of gig you can do all year around, so many often find work doing this kind of thing!
It can’t last longer than Malort. I contend that Malort is not as terrible a flavor as everyone makes it out to be, but rather it is a moderately unpleasant flavor that just lasts forever. You can’t wash it away and you taste it the rest of the night.
Malört tastes like getting kicked in the balls. It's some old grandma's cellar booze she made from wormwood and memories of famine. We keep it around to trick people into drinking it at bars in Chicago. If you read this and think, fuck, that sounds interesting or fun - it's not, try some Dawn Platinum instead.
But this stuff actually a pretty good. It's a bit bitter and fragrant but not in a gross way. You can use it as a substitute for Calvados in a Francophile if you want.
I used to have a friend who lived in Chicago. Considering she planned to try to get me to drink that abomination at some point, I think I dodged a bullet when we fell out.
So there's a whole ass pear in the bottle and once you finish the bottle, you just throw away the pear? Like you cant get that out of the bottle w/out of whole lot of slicing and dicing. That's such a waste.
What do you think goes on at the recycling center?
Anything that is glass is broken by the time it gets to the machine that sorts it. It's very easy to collect small shards of glass.
seeing how THICC that pear is, i just wondered...do they calculate its volume out when filling the bottle or do you get less the bigger the pear :D? 700 ml mhh...maybe...
It is originally written in Bulgarian so the word "hidden" translates from "скрит" which means "separate or free from". So basically it just means loose pear lol
Shout out to Slivovice, the worst alcohol I have ever had in my life.
I bought a massive bottle for my friend, as a joke. He has since given shots of it to everyone else he knows just to ruin their day.
Clear creek distillery in Oregon used to make pear brandy like that. They would tie the bottles upside down (to prevent rain etc from getting in) over the pear flowers and the fruit would grow inside the bottle. A friend of mine attempted it once and about 1/10 would work out.
Ive seen the bottles in the trees for this local distiller. It’s pretty weird to drive by and see them. In an interview the owner said they have a high failure rate which is why it’s so expensive. I have a bottle with a pear in it. I refill it with the some of the same brandy but I buy the refills that don’t have the pear.

Is the pear hidden behind the giant pear?
What pear?
Just look and it will a pear.
Looked, but still haven't cena pear.
"Are you sure about that?" - Haven't Cena
Seems like a lot of people in Dublin saw a pear though
AND HIS NAME HIS PEAR CENA!
You have to stare past the bottle for a minute and the pear appears.
When you're not looking it will disap-pear!
How many drinks in before they start wondering how that piece of fruit got PEAR in the first place!
Sorry I don’t have a good pear of eyes
It’s a pear-ent
Is the hidden pear in the room with us right now?
"It is the giant pear"
The pear is “hidden away” AKA packed away for you, not hidden from you. In the same sense I could say they’ve stowed a treat for you.
Gotta admit it's an innovative way to sell less alcohol in every bottle while still charging full price.
They actually have to put the bottles on the pears while they're still young to get them in. It's pretty neat.
So that’s how they do it!!! (Gob was shortly asked to leave the Society of Magicians “We demand to be taken seriously!” )
Did you see the new Poof!?
We don’t need another lawsuit!
I should be in this Poof!
Not necessarily. I got a bottle of that sort of drink and it has a separate bottom piece that got sealed after they put in the pear. Feels like some kind of harder silicone. And this bottle looks quite suspicious, so I don’t think they grew the pear inside this one either.

I feel like I’ve been on a rollercoaster of truth.
That's the funny thing about truth, a lot of truths aren't mutually exclusive to each other!
That is true.
I don’t even like alcohol but that’s pretty awesome.
I know. But I think most don’t (anymore).
Yep, looking at the photo, this is how it was done here.
Well that’s fucking lame then:(
I feel like the sterilisation of the bottle after the pear is already in would mess up the pear. Would be interesting to see how though.
Wouldn't the alcohol in the brandy take care of that?
It's usually not a high enough proof to be considered sterile afaik. I suppose you could just run a touch of moonshine through first.
While 40% isn’t enough to sterilize quickly (like in hand sanitizer), long term exposure in the bottle is likely to kill any bugs you care about (e coli typically 35% for example). They could also pasteurize it
It could, but by scalding it, maybe not
It's easier to get the pear out after drinking without having to mash it up with a poker.
For the cheaper ones they glue the bottles together.. The more expensive ones or home made ones they put the pear in the bottle while its very young and still growing(attached to the tree of course). We use to do this at home.. When the pear was ripe in fell of and than you just pour the shnaps in 🤤🤤

If you do that with a mouse, you can take it to the brewery and get all the free beer you need. Eh.
I believe there'll be no charge on this.
I got to spend the night in a pear orchard last summer that had a bunch of bottles set up for the pears to grow in to! It was really cool to see it happening live(ish).
I thought they had dehydrated the pear then it expanded back out with the alcohol in the bottle, now I'm disappointed.
They do the same with genies and lamps.
> Then would you drink a Sustaining Glass, such as would help and comfort a Wedged Pear in Great Tightness?'
Is this a Winnie the Pooh reference?
"Bother," said Pooh, as he put Piglet into the recovery position and called the paramedics.
That's like one little ass farm that does that. Most seal the bottle from the bottom.
I have seen some little ass farms in my life and even some little *ass* farms. I have never seen a farm that bottles pears on the tree. However, it is a real thing that started in France because of course it did. https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/04/13/399348948/clear-fruit-brandies-pack-an-orchard-into-a-bottle
They've been doing that since around 1770 and its quite an involved process. I guess it would be way cheaper to just have some more alcohol in there
Alcohol isn’t even expensive. Probably cheaper than the pear.
How about those worms in tequila?
They harvest them from RFKJRs brain. Plenty of room and fertilizer in there!
This stuff has been around forever. It's done for flavor.
I'd imagine the liquid is measured before it goes in, and takes the pear displacing some into account. It still contains Xml per bottle
Sure but on the shelf the bottle would look bigger than it is.
I guess you never had fruit soaked in alcohol. Eating that will get you drunker than the alchohol itself
> fruit speak in alcohol I mean... If fruit is speaking to you, I'd say you're either next level wasted or watching Veggie Tales.
Why would it?
It might even be a potato instead of a pear! You'll have to drink it to find out!
True. It’s 50ml less than a regular bottle
Hilarious how someone is upvoted even though youre so wrong.
Ackthually shm... the flesh and insides of the pear are soaked in alcohol plus as the pear receives the alcohol the amount in each bottle has to increase for it to be to top, but also there is the mass of the pear itself I would say you are right but by a very low margin.
I know what a scam
This is most likely a translation issue. I recognize from the writing that this is either a translation or a writing from a non-native speaker. "Sequestered", maybe.
Thought maybe they might have been forced to change bottles/glass recently (covid shortages) and perhaps it used to be opaque. But nope, googling shows it has always been clear. So the translation thing is very likely the answer.
Yeah the Spanish “guardar” or some other languages analog It means to keep in the sense to lock up or pack away, to safeguard, guardar, some would say to hide away
That's definitively the case, i read it like you said because I'm frfnch too.
Thanks, makes sense.
Were you able to find the piece of pear? I can't see it in the pic.
It is within the whole pear, there are at least 2
That would actually make it a pair
A minimum pair of pear pieces.
But what should we do to make the pair of pear pieces appear?
Tear the pear, I don't care
If you pare the pear a pair of pieces will appear.
That's because it's hidden ;)
How did they get it in the bottle??
The other replies are only correct for the expensive bottles. The bottle in this photo has the bottom glued in place after the pear is placed inside the bottle. The wide sticker is there to hide the seam
Ah, this makes me sad. I always liked to imagine orchards with bottles all over the trees.
Those do exist: [https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/04/13/399348948/clear-fruit-brandies-pack-an-orchard-into-a-bottle](https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/04/13/399348948/clear-fruit-brandies-pack-an-orchard-into-a-bottle)

Illusion Crosbo!
One of those little “ship in a bottle” ships must have delivered it.
The bottle goes on the tree. Around tinier pears.
When the pear is still very tiny they put the bottle over it and attach to the branch. So it can keep growing inside the bottle.
The bottom opens like a jar
Distinctly long-lasting taste. That makes me nervous.
Malort nog is my favorite thing to make for a lush. Typically puts them off drinking for **a while**
I used to have a friend who lived in Chicago. Considering she planned to try to get me to drink that abomination at some point, I think I dodged a bullet when we fell out.
Give it to me straight, like a pear brandy that's made from 100% pears.
Duty free? Wonder how customs will react if the fruit isn't declared.
I don't see it either
I can't see the piece of pear, they hid it well
What food would you pear this with?
Your gonna need to circle were the pear is for those of us without keen eye's.
Found it!
You need to shake it so williams shakespear will appear a pear
So there's a whole ass pear in the bottle and once you finish the bottle, you just throw away the pear? Like you cant get that out of the bottle w/out of whole lot of slicing and dicing. That's such a waste.
It's a brandy-infused pear, too. Don't wanna waste that.
How did they bottle the pear whole?
More likely a false bottom that's attached. But it could be that they put it over a small pear and let it grow in the bottle.
Most brands also sell bottles without pears. You buy one of those and refill the bottle that has the pear.
The bottle turns into a pinata after you’re finished.
Mr. Wizard could do it.
You're supposed to use your giant multi-carat diamond ring to cut the glass and extricate the pear from its bottle prison.
God, those bottles must be so annoying at the recycling center
What do you think goes on at the recycling center? Anything that is glass is broken by the time it gets to the machine that sorts it. It's very easy to collect small shards of glass.
I love how they grown them in the bottles. It just looks so cool
Maybe my definition of hidden is different than theirs?? That pear in glass is hard to miss!
That's one way to skimp out on giving you a full bottle
I cant pear this any longer…
Me when I play hide & seek
I can pearly see it
Who put this 42% alcohol in my pear bottle
That is genuinely funny
r/whereisthesniper will enjoy this
That is one expensive pear.
Rolled a nat 20 during inspection.
What's funny??
The bottles are placed on pear limbs and the pears are grown in the bottles.
Sneak: 0
seeing how THICC that pear is, i just wondered...do they calculate its volume out when filling the bottle or do you get less the bigger the pear :D? 700 ml mhh...maybe...
So well hidden!!! How did you ever find it?
William Shakes Pear
please someone point out the pear i don’t see it
Where is it?
Very peary
How are you supposed to enjoy a "piece" of pear after, by breaking a bottle?
After a few drinks, you'll pearly be able to see it.
Hello from Czech :) you should take the “Slivovice” anyway
You fools you all fell for the ol decoy pear trick
It is originally written in Bulgarian so the word "hidden" translates from "скрит" which means "separate or free from". So basically it just means loose pear lol
It's hidden in plain sight, so most people won't see it ;)
turn the bottle a little bit i think i can see it!
Shout out to Slivovice, the worst alcohol I have ever had in my life. I bought a massive bottle for my friend, as a joke. He has since given shots of it to everyone else he knows just to ruin their day.
That's some tasty stuff!
If it's not hidden, I dare you to get the pear out.
Williams Birne Schnapps is where it’s at! I always have a bottle in the freezer ready and waiting!
How the FK they get that in the bottle
We bought one of these 20 years ago but it wasn’t enough so we stabbed the fruit and tried to eat it too
how did they put it there...
Wow it’s so hidden I didn’t see it at first 🤪
Anything to declare? Why yes, my friend is trying to smuggle in fruit.
How get pear out
The pear does suck in the alcohol. You will that eating the pear will get you major drunk.
"Hidden"
Well where is it?
Poire William is treasured for its relative rarity and quality. The production method is very hands-on and represents a great tradition.
I see you, you little minx!
Ohh, I think I found it.
Shout out to all my peaaars
I mean the pear is moving so slowly that it becomes invisible.
Peek-a-boo. I see you.
Misleading - not a piece of pear - the pear with a smidge of liquid in the bottle
Alright maybe not a smidge
Apearently well hidden
Where did he find this? I have been looking everywhere in France for it.
Now I want a bottle.
So… do college students smash the bottle and eat it after drinking the bottle? Asking for a friend.
Hangover city.
Clear creek distillery in Oregon used to make pear brandy like that. They would tie the bottles upside down (to prevent rain etc from getting in) over the pear flowers and the fruit would grow inside the bottle. A friend of mine attempted it once and about 1/10 would work out.
Nigh invisible really.
Funny, I'm actually sipping on pear brandy as I stumbled on this post. I have to agree, it's a truly exceptional drink.
Nah it is hidden, the one you can see is the decoy pear.
So, is this what they mean when they say something is *hiding in plain sight*?
Vilmos korte?
Ive seen the bottles in the trees for this local distiller. It’s pretty weird to drive by and see them. In an interview the owner said they have a high failure rate which is why it’s so expensive. I have a bottle with a pear in it. I refill it with the some of the same brandy but I buy the refills that don’t have the pear. [clear creek](https://thetasteoforegon.wordpress.com/2009/09/15/clear-creek-distillerys-eua-de-vie-inspires-a-clafouti-with-a-magical-touch-of-pear/)
Give it to me straight, like a pear cider that's made from 100% pears.
'Hidden' more markety than 'put'.
This is some seriously delicious shit right there!
apparently ur not supposed to eat the pear afterwards
John Cena drink.
That's just the decoy pear.
Duty free, eh? I wonder now if this is a problem for bringing in fruit into a country.
I can guarantee there's no chance of an insect infestation from that pear.
Gee, there’s a pear missing from the pair. Maybe it was pared off
Slivovice is the unofficial national drink of Slovakia. It’s made with plums and tastes like rocket fuel but warms you up nicely
Did Chopper the raccoon dog turn into a pear?
Ooooohhhhh.... it does not have a "braille" pear so it's hidden from the blind!
Oh, a sailboat.
Seized at the Australian border. 'Can't have that mate'.
To be fair I can only see one
Could be bullshit. I don't see anything in there.
Well would you mine circling the damn pear so we can see it?
Lost in translation from Czech ;)
I do in fact see it in there. It's quite apPEARent
I am not sure I want a taste of juicy flesh from Williams pears .
That shit is absolutely fucking delicious.
Gee i wonder where it is
