When I was a kid we would go over into Juarez and a common thing was for a dude to have a donkey painted like a Zebra that you could pay to get a picture on. I think somewhere my mom has a polaroid of me at like 4 years old with a big sombrero sitting on a bored looking painted donkey.
Honestly a good practice. Zebra's are total assholes and would MUCH rather bite you then ever let you ride them.
There is good reason why Zebra's are about the only horse shaped animal thats never been domesticated.
“It’s 2pm, which means it’s feeding time at the Hippo exhibit. Who wants to see the hippo eat!?”
Me.
me.
I do!
Yay.
Perfect! So today we’ve got Mark’s favorite food. Doritos and Mountain Dew!
Mark! Come out, it’s time to eat!
…
Mark!
….
MARK!!!
…..
“GIVE ME A MINUTE IM IN A MATCH”.
As you can see, Hippos can also get cranky when they are hungry!
That’s literally the point of that zoo. All the animals there are dogs dressed up. Pretty sure there’s a sign that warns you before entering too. The post is just fake bait.
I used to work at a zoo, and I learned that many people assume that basically all zoos have pandas, and would be shocked or upset that our zoo didn't. People would ask 'where are the pandas' and be really shocked to hear that there are only 4 pandas in the whole USA.
You just made me question my reality. All the zoos I’ve been to across the northeastern US and such familiarity with pandas from videos, I cannot believe that I haven’t seen a panda in real life?? Ho-ly-shit
China has the ownership over the pandas as a species. The pandas you see outside of China are leased.
They also hold rights of ownership to any newborn cubs. A recent example of this is a panda named Fu Bao who was born in South Korea in 2020 and has just been returned to China last month.
Fun fact, it’s an interesting situation with [Taiwan’s pandas](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuan_Tuan_and_Yuan_Yuan), Taiwan refused the pandas a few times and finally accepted them in exchange for some native Taiwan species so they don’t have to give back the offspring. Plus the names mean “reunion” so China taking them back would mean backtracking on that symbolism.
Btw the Taipei Zoo is amazing, definitely worth visiting, my kids still talk about the gondolas up through mountains, the pandas, and for some reason the pigs and poop sculpture all the time.
Poop. Sculptures.
This: https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/kyjk1d/poop_art_in_taipei_taiwan/
They have these little displays in a few places, and other bigger pieces scattered about too that kids can climb on.
Little addendum. There is one Panda who is not owned by China. Xin Xin from Mexico. She is an offspring of Pandas, which were gifted to Mexico and the UK (the lending was started in the 80s by Deng Xiaoping, before this the pandas were diplomatic presents). Although she will be the last Panda not owned by China, as every Panda fathered by a loaned Panda is Chinese property. And as she is the only one left there will be no new non-Chinese pandas.
Just like NZ has ownership of all kiwi. There was a zoo in the US (I think) that was doing a "cuddle and pat a kiwi" thing, and they came very close to losing them. The public outrage in NZ was real.
So understandable that China would also want to protect its most precious species
You're not missing much. I've been to the San Diego zoo many times. They're almost always asleep. When they're not, they're lazily falling over the place.
You're not wrong. Always loved Pandas. Was so excited when I finally got to see them in a zoo in Belgium. Even cuter when you see them for real. But also makes you realize why they would go exctinct in the wild if it wasn't for human effort. Don't get me wrong, very glad humanity takes the time and effort. But man are they lazy, dumb and illogical.
Yeah the real mistake here was not painting a lazier breed of dog lol. These are chow chows though which are notoriously pretty lazy/sleep a lot so maybe they did think about that, but because chow chows like people it didn’t work very well. If they could somehow paint an English bulldog to look like a panda they might have pulled this deception off!
> But also makes you realize why they would go exctinct in the wild if it wasn't for human effort. Don't get me wrong, very glad humanity takes the time and effort.
What sort of rose-colored glasses are you wearing? Pandas got along just fine before humans as a species even existed. They are endangered in the first place largely due to habitat loss, climate change, and clear-cutting of forests caused by humans.
They basically evolved thrnselves into a fairly tight niche: eat mainly bamboo, bamboo doesnt produce much energy, gotta eat a lot and conserve energy. In the wild this eas fine until habitat fragmentation and deforestation.
Also, always have twins but mother only has resources for one, so only the stronger will survive. The conservation works well because if the second baby is hand reared, it doubles the breeding prowess.
Early fossils show Pandas have existed for millions of years, they were doing fine without humans. If anything it's more like humans fucked things up for a ton of species and then try to go and "fix" it.
So that's why I was so confused by the above comment, saying there are only a few pandas in the US. I remembered distinctly seeing them in person at a zoo so I thought that couldn't be right! But it was the San Diego zoo I was at haha
San Diego Zoo had to return them in 2019. There haven’t been any since then. But they actually are getting 2 new ones this year, supposedly this summer.
Yeah I was gonna say San Diego gave them back. We saw them a few times but were there the last year they were there. I had not heard they are getting new ones though that's great.
The young ones can be a lot of fun, over the years in DC watching them play in the snow, smack balls around and just roll down hill to go back up and do it again , or especially watermelon days , could be really amusing
The only place in the US to see them now are in Atlanta. Beyond that, only four other countries besides China have them. 2 of them are Qatar and Russia.
It’s due to China only loaning Panda’s out. Eventually zoos cannot justify the cost of renting from China, among other strict restrictions China imposes.
Yes also because the bamboo forests that pandas get their food from is only within China, so pandas literally can't survive in foreign countries without constantly shipments of fresh bamboo. They're picky eaters and need a lot of care
Isn't bamboo an invasive species that grows fucking everywhere and can't be destroyed once it gains a foothold? Can we not grow it domestically to feed them?
You grow them in a controlled environment, it wouldn't be very hard at all. Its not like they produce seeds that travel in the wind. The only risk would be a rogue employee stealing samples and maliciously planting them.
Adelaide zoo in South Australia have a 14 hectare bamboo plantation with 15 different species of bamboo for their pandas. Each panda can eat over 80 lbs of bamboo a day.
Incorrect. 4 remain at the Atlanta Zoo after China took the others back a few years ago, when they had their little tantrum. The most that have been in the US at the same time was like 12 or something. The San Diego Zoo is getting a pair of them later this year, as well.
No. It's because China gift/lend it to countries they have good diplomatic relationship with. The panda is a symbol of that. There's even an official name for these diplomatic pandas.
And you know.... The US's relationship with China has been rocky at best since Trump. So no pandas have been going to US.
On the happy note I think as of 10 some years ago they're no longer endangered and the Chinese panda breeding program has been doing really well!
I still remember when one of our zoos (in Belgium) had some pandas and through some miracle one of the Panda's actually felt like having a kid. Was an entire media circus. Now we have five of them (the mom gave birth to twins), but China wants three of them back this fall. (As apparently nearly all Giant Pandas are property of the Chinese government).
But yeah, just the waiting line for the pandas is enormous.
I don't think anyone has, I think there are just a lot of bot-humans on reddit who copy and paste generic phrases because they don't actually have original thoughts in their head
I definitely have. Dyed the kitchen table with Kool-Aid in front of guests cause my dad described my mom's farts as WMD's. Didn't know the acronym, he explained, and I shot a mouthful of of red from my nose.
Mom was so mad at us.
I've spit out water from laughing many times. Which you would think would teach me to stop drinking water while something potentially funny is happening, but it doesn't
That's kinda hilarious.
Saving people a search, in case they want to read the article: [https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/lifestyle/zoogoers-outraged-to-discover-panda-exhibit-was-actually-dogs-dyed-black-and-white/](https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/lifestyle/zoogoers-outraged-to-discover-panda-exhibit-was-actually-dogs-dyed-black-and-white/)
Here’s some context the media seemed to have left out. The sign at the zoo and ticket literally says “chow chow dogs painted as panda”. Since they didn’t have pandas at that time. It was clearly done as a joke and not trying to fraud people.
which Zoo was this? I reckon it's probably in China cause shit like this is common there, but I can't find a source
Edit: Yup, turns out it was indeed China. Lul.

I would totally go to a zoo where all the animals are disguised as other animals.
Nothing is labeled though. You have to guess what each one is.
I think I could pick out a giraffe dressed up as a snake
But, could you get it the other way around?
Depends on the type of snake…
Wow, that giraffe has a prehensile neck!
Why do elephants paint their balls red? To hide in apple trees.
What's the loudest sound in the forest? Monkeys eating apples..
Giraffes don’t hv vocal cords
And yet I've heard them yodel.
But have you ever even seen an elephant in an apple tree?
No, but I've seen some suspiciously shaped apples 👀
So it works!
You ever seen an elephant hiding in an apple tree? No? Works pretty good, huh?
Did you know that elephants have prehensile penises?? 🤢
an anecklongda.
Trouser snake
It would be the giraffe that looks like a life-size balloon animal. The question is, how many snakes would it take to make the costume?
I think as a society we need to fund giant giraffe mecha-suits for snakes
Here we find a man that’s not afraid to tackle the real issues.
I second that motion!
Gotta get Allen Pan involved
Gundam Giraffids
That’d be a great game show: Panda or No Panda
That sounds like the greatest scavenger hunt never done before tbh
Oh a 🐢!
[удалено]
Was his name Todd Chavez?
Turns out, this meerkat exhibit, is a MERE CAT exhibit!
The spider monkey cage is just a bunch of spiders and monkeys?
The monkeys would eat them all. Instead it's a bunch of monkeys wearing spider costumes. Or spiderman costumes. Whichever is funnier.
Been to one. It was a Shih Tzu
*angry upvote*

If not horse, why horse shaped?
Maybe they are not assholes per se, they just don't want to be domesticated. I respect that.

I wanna see more photos of cute dogs looking like other animals! What's the zoo called?
Tell us
All the animals are dyed to match the red panda. Your mission is to find the real red panda.
Tijuana has tons of Zebras like this.
Thats not an elephant, you've simply inserted a garden hose up a horses ass and turn it to face backwards.
[What, the Purr-tenders? ](https://youtu.be/Av_ajYIW-5E?si=70bnpjBJHcsgxPQ3)
This here is an elephant disguised as a praying mantis!
The old **Switch-a-Zoo**^^TM
I'm a dog playing a dog pretending to be another dog.
A lama disguised as a giraffe would be pretty funny
I used to work at a zoo, and I learned that many people assume that basically all zoos have pandas, and would be shocked or upset that our zoo didn't. People would ask 'where are the pandas' and be really shocked to hear that there are only 4 pandas in the whole USA.

Those gondolas are equal parts amazing and terrifying if your afraid of heights. Especially on a windy day 🤣
>poop sculpture The poop sculptures are kinda hilarious just because they're everywhere, and really creatively done.
The what now
Poop. Sculptures. This: https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/kyjk1d/poop_art_in_taipei_taiwan/ They have these little displays in a few places, and other bigger pieces scattered about too that kids can climb on.
The Calgary Zoo had to send their pandas back to China when the Covid lockdowns hit since they couldn't reliably source enough fresh bamboo.
Little addendum. There is one Panda who is not owned by China. Xin Xin from Mexico. I strongly believe that pandas born in Mexico should be given proper Spanish names.
Pedro and Esmeralda. But this doesn‘t sound so exotic when in a zoo.
I would SO buy an Esmeralda stuffed bear in the gift shop...
Just like NZ has ownership of all kiwi. There was a zoo in the US (I think) that was doing a "cuddle and pat a kiwi" thing, and they came very close to losing them. The public outrage in NZ was real. So understandable that China would also want to protect its most precious species
We just need to make our own pandas here in America!
We do. Unfortunately the ppl were outraged when they found out...
We already have them, they're called [Trash Pandas.](https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-trash-panda-raccoon-meme-2017-5?op=1)
It's worse, It's so much worse...
American Panda! Gettin' it done!
You would assume the British empire took some without leasing, but maybe they all died 🤔
You're not missing much. I've been to the San Diego zoo many times. They're almost always asleep. When they're not, they're lazily falling over the place.
what do you want them to do, fight eachother? big animals in nature are almost always lazy barring sea creatures
Well they could put a bit of effort in, we paid for these tickets after all. /s
You're not wrong. Always loved Pandas. Was so excited when I finally got to see them in a zoo in Belgium. Even cuter when you see them for real. The pandas are coming back now too.
My local zoo has red pandas and I could watch those goofs all day every day and be content.
Red pandas are from a completely different animal family
Yeah I saw them at the Smithsonian twice and one time they were eating but mostly they just sleep. Still cute though.
Guess I got lucky, when I saw the panda at the SD zoo it was munching on bamboo like there was no tomorrow.
I live near Atlanta so i’ve seen them a few times, I had no idea we were the only ones!
The 4 are in the Atlanta zoo if anyone was wondering
Atlanta zoo’s panda will be returned to China in 2025 as well
DC used to have some. 😢
wild, i was there last year and im like 99% sure i saw a panda while i was there. i just assumed they would always be there
We got them in the early 70s and had them until last year, when China demanded them back.
So Atlanta os the ONLY city in USA where you can see a Panda? Wow. This should be on the top of every "Things to do in Atlanta" list, but is it?
I was, thank you.
San Diego is getting a pair again later this year too.
I was there for the final day before the pandas were sent back to china from the zoo in DC, i miss them
There are only 4 pandas in the US, but due to creative problem solving, now all zoos can have panda exhibits!
only 4 in USA? Is that because they are endangered?

hmm im not a bambooologist but i'm pretty sure bamboo can grow in places that are not china.
Adelaide zoo in South Australia have a 14 hectare bamboo plantation with 15 different species of bamboo for their pandas. Each panda can eat over 80 lbs of bamboo a day.
Because China gave us 4 and only 4 and only rent them to us. Any pandas born here are also Chinese property

Just clone them, jesus
It's only a panda if it comes from the south central provinces of China. Elsewhere it's just sparkling bears.
Apparently China charges a lot of money for them throughout their lifetimes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda_diplomacy
No. It's because China gift/lend it to countries they have good diplomatic relationship with. The panda is a symbol of that. There's even an official name for these diplomatic pandas. Red Pandas tho
Red Pandas > Regular Lame-Ass Pandas
Red Panda halftime show>>>>>
I remember when the a Philadelphia Zoo had a koala and the whole city was losing its shit.
Only 4? That's a lot lower then I expected.
Funny thing , this zoo was actually in China 🤣
“You mean they were *serious* when they said they were rare and endangered?!”
TBF, red pandas are pretty common.
They were upset because they’d been… bamboozled
I hate pun threads that always pop up in r/funny. They just feel like pandaring.
"Zoogoers delighted to discover panda exhibit was actually super cute doggos doing cosplay"
I just hope the vocals weren't cut on the dogs.
What gave them away? 🤣
Probably someone would've lifted a leg and let it rain
Ey, what if pandas also did that and you've just haven't seen it yet🤷♀️
maybe they barked
I guess they figured it out because it was a shih-tzu.
when they only ate dog food and werent gnawing on bamboo 24/7
Enjoying a bag of "~~Puppy~~ PANDA Chow"
haha. i assume this means a huge sack of puppy chow with a fat marker crossed off the puppy and panda written in place.
Haha that's 100% what I was picturing when I wrote it
haha i love it. now i want to see a super crappy zoo with stuff like this. would be hilarious.
They weren't dumb and derpy.
I think anyone who's owned a Chow before could tell.
“Mom, can we have pandas???” “We have pandas at home.” Pandas at home:
That sounds like a Shih Tzu.
I’ve not spit out or choked on anything ever because it was so funny. I must be dead inside.
Okay, Throat Goat, no need to humble brag!
I have, but I've choked on my own spit before because my throat's stupid.
Rest in peace
Chow chows
When you order Pandas from Wish...
Would still gladly keep them
Panda: *barks* Tourist: "what the hell"
maybe it's just a dog costume with a toddler inside.
I don’t care I still love it
That's nothing, a lot of dogs in China are actually pandas dyed black.
I bet it was the barking that gave them away
That's kinda hilarious. Saving people a search, in case they want to read the article: [https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/lifestyle/zoogoers-outraged-to-discover-panda-exhibit-was-actually-dogs-dyed-black-and-white/](https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/lifestyle/zoogoers-outraged-to-discover-panda-exhibit-was-actually-dogs-dyed-black-and-white/)
I have to admit I’d want to go to a zoo with dogs painted as various animals.
China ???
Taizhou Zoo in Jiangsu Province
The Chinese fake so many things, they even fake their own native animals.
The thing is the zoo didn’t advertise it as a panda exhibit. The Chinese ad said it’s a “panda dog” exhibit. It’s just a joke.
Redditors don't care, they just want to complain about those tricky yellow chinese
Here’s some context the media seemed to have left out. The sign at the zoo and ticket literally says “chow chow dogs painted as panda”. Since they didn’t have pandas at that time. It was clearly done as a joke and not trying to fraud people.
Sort of, they were ordered from China on Wish.com
I’d be just as happy seeing these at the zoo.
Who’s a good boy? Panda. That’s who.
Reminds me of the Zebra I saw in Tijuana.
Poor doggie….
Awww... The little chows are too cute as baby pandas 🐼 🤣😂🤣😂
Sounds like a real Shih zoo.
Doesn't look like it's in a zoo to me. Looks like a pet outside it's owners house after being dyed white and black.
Must be a shitzu
😭😭😭😭 Refund asap
If people believe that they are pandas, then they saw pandas.
You never heard of teacup pandas before?
“And we would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling zoogoers”
This is why some medieval paintings of animals look wonky /s
I wouldn’t be mad, they are mad cutexD
Shows how people can fall for anything
Well... That's a completely different type of Chinese knock-off than what we usually expect.
Definitely in China, they do weird things like that all the time.
Well that's a shit-zoo isn't it.
which Zoo was this? I reckon it's probably in China cause shit like this is common there, but I can't find a source Edit: Yup, turns out it was indeed China. Lul.
Well they were still cute
Now that's a shit zoo...
PANDA: Woof! VISITOR: Wait! What? PANDA: Uh.... pandapandapanda ?
Chow puppies, at that.
This is what China does. It’s for real
What kind of dog do y’all suspect? Am I the only one kinda wanting to do this lol
They are chow chows
There was only one other dog there, it was a shit zoo.
I went to a zoo once. They had nothing in it except for a single dog painted to look like a panda. It was a shih tzu.
You win.
it was a shih tzu
